Sheri Hagen, director. In German with English subtitles (92 min., 2012).

Through its engagement with blindness as both a trope and a physical reality, Sheri Hagen’s *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* raises provocative questions regarding color blindness, race and racism, and in/visibility in contemporary German society. By challenging the normative category of whiteness, as well as able-bodiedness and heterosexuality, the film also explores alternative modes of seeing through the visual medium of cinema.

Sheri Hagen is a Nigerian-German director, screenwriter, actress, and founder of the production company Equality Film GmbH. Born in Lagos, she grew up in Hamburg and has lived and worked in Berlin since the 1990s. After training as a stage actress, Hagen then appeared in numerous film productions and television series, before returning to theater in 2010. Across her career, Hagen has worked on film projects as author, director, and producer. *Auf den zweiten Blick (At Second Glance)* is her debut film as a director. It won awards at the Filmfest Emden-Norderney (2012) and the Kirchen Filmfestival Recklinghausen (2013).

Those who register for the Q&A with Sheri Hagen on 1/29/21 will receive a link and password to view the film *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* between January 18-29, 2021. Register for the discussion at https://myumi.ch/jxo3w.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

This lecture will be live streamed

In this lecture we will review the basic building blocks of matter as we understand them, as encapsulated in the Standard Model of Particle Physics. The last piece of the Standard Model, the Higgs Boson, was discovered in 2012. However, this Standard Model leaves many fundamental questions unanswered. We will review some of these questions and present a couple of leading candidates for their solution.

Our speaker, Professor Aaron Pierce joined U-M in 2006 and has served as director of the Leinweber Center for Theoretical Physics from 2013-2020. He is a recipient of the Henry Russel Award, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and he is a Simons Foundation Fellow.

This is the third of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Advances in Science. The next lecture will be on February 4, 2021. The title is Formation of Habitable Worlds and the Search for Life. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Join us THURSDAY January 28 at 11:30 am for our first VIRTUAL SEMINAR of 2021.

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities must decide which groups to prioritize for vaccination in an evolving landscape where infection dynamics and population mitigating behavior are mutually connected in a feedback loop (i.e., human-environment interactions). Moreover, if we discover that vaccines prevent not only disease but also transmission, authorities must factor vaccine indirect protection (vaccine-generated herd immunity) into their considerations, which sometimes suggest a strategy of targeting groups that cause the most transmission. In this talk we will use a mathematical model to address the question: which age group should be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination in order to prevent the most deaths? We developed an age-structured human-environment mathematical model for Ontario, Canada, where evolutionary game theory describes how population adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) responds to case incidence. Schools and workplaces are also closed and re-opened based on reported cases. We compared strategies of vaccinating 60+ year-olds first; <20 year-olds first; uniformly by age; and a novel contact-based strategy. The last three strategies interrupt transmission while the first targets a vulnerable group. The model shows realistic dynamics whereby case notifications, NPI adherence, and lockdown undergo successive waves that interact with timing of the vaccine program to determine the relative effectiveness of the four strategies. We identify a parameter regime where transmission-interrupting strategies are more effective in preventing deaths than prioritizing older age groups. We conclude that using SARS-CoV-2 vaccines to interrupt transmission may prevent more deaths than prioritizing vulnerable age groups, depending on the time course of the pandemic in a given population.

Some students are beginning to return to face-to-face school after months of remote learning during the pandemic.

For many parents, there are still big questions about safety, including protecting their families from exposure to the virus and how children and schools may contribute to COVID-19 transmission in communities.

Families may also face behavioral, social and emotional challenges as children and teens readjust (again) to a new normal in their learning environments.

Experts from U-M's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital will answer some of families’ top questions about returning to in-person learning.

Topics to be addressed include:
• What research says about transmission and COVID-19 health risks in kids
• Contact with at-risk family members like grandparents
• How to know if your child should stay home from school
• Making decisions about continuing remote learning
• Helping kids adjust to the new school normal
• Supporting kids’ emotional, social and mental health
• Managing behavioral challenges during the transition
• Advice for families of children with special learning needs
• Re-engaging children who may have been disengaged during remote learning
• How to respond (and how not to respond) to disappointed teens who continue to miss milestones
And more

Viewers may ask questions live at the time of the event or add them to the event discussion area here to be considered.

The discussion will be moderated by developmental behavioral pediatrician Jenny Radesky, M.D., and the panel will also include pediatric infectious disease specialist Alison Tribble, M.D., and Terry Bravender, M.D., chief of adolescent medicine at Mott.

Broadcast live on @mottchildren Facebook and Twitter channels as well as Michigan Medicine's YouTube channel

While the Japanese government has been encouraging students to participate in study abroad programs, in comparison with previous reports, a 2019 government White Paper illustrated a further drop in interest in study abroad among students aged 13-19. In this talk, I will present social factors, aspects of English education, and communication styles in Japan contributing to this trend. I will expound upon these issues based on mixed methods studies comparing undergraduate students’ attitudes towards and experiences with language and intercultural learning in Canada where English is the first language, and the Philippines where English is a second language.

Dr. Tajima currently serves as Senior Visiting Scholar in the Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan. She is also Associate Professor, Faculty of Intercultural Studies, Gakushuin Women's College in Tokyo, Japan. Contact-map of a protein sequence dictates the global topology of structural fold. Accurate prediction of the contact-map is thus essential to protein 3D structure prediction, which is particularly useful for the protein sequences that do not have close homology templates in the Protein Data Bank.

In this talk, we present a new method, ResPRE, to predict residue-level protein contacts using inverse covariance matrix (or precision matrix) of multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) through deep residual convolutional neural network training. Detailed data analyses show that the major advantage of ResPRE lies at the utilization of precision matrix that helps rule out transitional noises of contact-maps compared with the previously used covariance matrix. Meanwhile, the residual network with parallel shortcut layer connections increases the learning ability of deep neural network training. It was also found that appropriate collection of MSAs can further improve the accuracy of final contact-map predictions.

It has long been known that there exist strings with supersymmetry on the world sheet, but not in spacetime. These include the well-known Type 0 strings, as well as a series of seven heterotic strings, all of which are obtained by imposing unconventional GSO projections. Besides these classic examples, relatively little is known about the full space of non-SUSY theories. One of the reasons why non-SUSY strings have remained understudied is the fact that nearly all of them have closed string tachyons, and hence do not admit ten-dimensional flat space as a stable vacuum. The goal of this talk is two-fold. First, using recent advances in condensed matter theory, we will reinterpret GSO projections in terms of topological phases of matter, thereby providing a framework for the classification of non-SUSY strings. Having done so, we will show that for all non-SUSY theories in which a tachyon exists, it can be condensed to give a (meta)stable lower-dimensional vacuum. In many cases, these stable vacua will be two-dimensional string theories already known in the literature.

Orientalism and Monotheism: Renan on Judaism and Islam (January 28, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80679 80679-20775557@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 28, 2021 12:00pm

Throughout the nineteenth century, the birth of what one may call philologia orientalis and the discovery of the linguistic similarities between Sanskrit and European languages radically transformed the perception of the East, much weakening the idea of a family relationship between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The case of Ernest Renan (1823-1892) is here emblematic. The lecture will survey Renan’s conception of Judaism and Islam, through his invention of the category of “Semitic religions.” We shall reflect on its consequences on the study of monotheism among historians of religions, as well as on the development of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the last decades of the century.

In this lecture, Kaan Üçsu (Istanbul University) deals with Abu Bakr al-Dimashqî’s geography through his translation of Joan Blaeu’s (d. 1673) Atlas Maior. The book was presented to Mehmed IV as a gift by the Dutch ambassador to Istanbul in 1668. Following it, Abu Bakr al-Dimashqî (d. 1691), a university professor and geographer, embarked on its translation, which would take roughly 10 years and result in a ten-volume translation and a summary translation of two volumes.

This lecture will locate the translation into a larger geographical literature within the Ottoman Empire and beyond.

Join Stamps Gallery for back-to-back virtual performances by artists and Stamps School of Art & Design alumni Carisa Bledsoe (BFA Interarts ‘14) and Schroeder Cherry (BFA ‘76). The performances are part of the exhibition Story, Word, Sound, Sway, featuring artists using performance, movement, text, sound, and design to interrogate systems of oppression and interrupt the status quo.

Bledsoe (she/her/they) will present a new iteration of their performance “What the Tide Brought In,’’ first performed at the Yellow Barn in Ann Arbor in 2014 shortly before Bledsoe graduated from U-M. Since its inception, “What the Tide Brought In” has been performed at venues across the US and France, morphing each time to address the site specificity of the venue and moment in time.

Cherry (he/him/his) will be in performance with his handmade puppets that have made appearances at the Studio Museum of Harlem, Baltimore Museum of Art, and Smithsonian Institution’s Anacostia Museum amongst other notable venues. Cherry’s performances have been enchanting and educating audiences of all ages since the 1970s when Cherry first started performing while an apprentice to a puppet master in Chicago during college. Performances will be followed by a conversation with the artists in dialogue with exhibition curators Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan and Moteniola Ogundipe, a current Stamps student. The conversation will be accompanied by a live Q&A.

Story, Word, Sound, Sway is on view at Stamps Gallery from January 18 - February 28, 2021. For more information, visit: Story, Word, Sound, Sway, or contact Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan at jenjkhan@umich.edu.

You are invited to the new DSI’s research group, “The Digital Underground: Theory+Practice” (DIG-undr). "DIG-undr" is a project of the Tangent Lab, an open-ended research collective founded by Imani Cooper Mkandawire (DSI+Comparative Literature) and Irina Aristarkhova (DSI+Stamps School) to imagine and engender inclusive machines. Our group seeks to mine affinities and tensions between digital theory and various forms of practice (industry, art, design, activism), as well as the academy and its “outside” (the publics, the users, digital infrastructure).

The group will meet once a month in January, February, March and April 2021. This is an open research group and our first meeting will be on January 28, 2021, 2-4 pm on Zoom. At this first meeting we will discuss pressing research challenges related to theory+practice configurations, unique intellectual community around theory+practice collaborations at the DSI, and brainstorm a collective project. In Winter 2021, we are particularly interested in digital theory around AI, data science, machine learning, social robots, VR/AR and art, architecture, design and activism (democracy, racial justice, feminism, social change). Please see the poster attached herewith.

In the first installment of our Winter 2021 Series, meteorologist and weather historian Sean Potter will share excerpts and insights from his new book, "Too Near for Dreams: The Story of Cleveland Abbe, America’s First Weather Forecaster."

"Cleveland Abbe’s Michigan Connection"

Abstract:
Abbe was the first person in America to successfully provide regular, practical weather forecasts to the public, based on reports from a network of observers. Before he turned his attention to meteorology, however, Abbe was an astronomer—and he spent time at the University of Michigan, studying astronomy under the famed astronomer Franz Brünnow and teaching physics and civil engineering. These early experiences in his professional life helped set him on a course that would lead to his establishment, in 1869, of a weather forecasting enterprise at the Cincinnati Observatory, where he served as director.

In 1871, he moved to Washington, where he became a civilian assistant to General Albert Myer, chief signal officer of the Army, who had taken charge of the nation’s first weather service the year before. Abbe would lead the forecasting efforts at the nation’s newly established weather service and set the standard for scientific research in a career that would last nearly half a century. Throughout his life, this “man of gentle and generous ways,” guided by his abiding faith, overcame personal and professional hardships in pursuit of science to become the most famous—and celebrated—meteorologist in America, if not the world.

During his talk, Mr. Potter, whose career in weather and communications has included work for ABC News, and the National Weather Service, will share stories from Abbe’s life and career, with a focus on his time in Michigan.

Aphasia Social Hour (January 28, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80755 80755-20783466@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 28, 2021 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: U-M Aphasia Program (UMAP)

Aphasia, a speech-language disorder that can affect all aspects of communication — speaking, reading, writing, comprehension, etc. — is more common than previously understood. Acquired when the brain experiences trauma like that of a stroke or head injury, more than 2 million people in the U.S. are thought to have the disorder; yet, it's not something most people are aware of. It can be incredibly isolating, which is why staying social and connected is especially important.

The University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP) at the University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL), hosts a free, virtual aphasia social hour each week to help facilitate social connecting while practicing communication skills.

All aphasia social hours in January are scheduled for 4 - 5 p.m. Thursdays (Eastern) and will take on the following topics:

*Jan. 14 - Resolve to participate in this session all about — you guessed it — resolutions. Love them? Hate them? Have a funny story about past resolutions? Bring it on.

*Jan. 21 - Hometown Proud! Share about where you’re from or where you now live! Bring maps, photos, and brag (or complain!) about that place where you were brought up.

*Jan. 28 - For us in Michigan, wintertime can mean hunker-time, as in hunker down until spring. But it doesn't have to. As the Nordic people say, "there is no such thing as bad weather, only poor preparation." We're not sure about all that, but come ready to share how you stay active in the winter months, either outdoors or indoors.

Registration is required in order to get the link to join. See: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwlc-qhpjoqGNRqaI3Fepl8dswAWsS6SwuV

When you click the link to register, you can select which weeks you want to participate — all in one place. Sign up for them all to make sure you don't miss out on connecting with others in the aphasia community. Building confidence and staying social are some of the best things you can do for yourself and loved ones when aphasia is a part of your life.

Seminar Abstract:

My research program, the Precision Immune Microenvironment (PIM) Lab, will create a minimally invasive toolset for monitoring immune responses within tissues. In my research seminar I will begin by briefly discussing the work I performed with Dr. Themis Kyriakides as a PhD student at Yale - strategies to manipulate the early stages of the foreign body response (FBR) to implanted materials. I will next discuss my work as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan with Dr. Lonnie Shea. I focus on harnessing the chronic phase of the FBR, as a tool to monitor the immune system. I use biomaterial-based immunological niches to provide insights into the phenotype of innate immune cells that control disease activity. Cells harvested from these niches exhibit differential gene expression sufficient to monitor disease dynamics and to gauge the effectiveness of treatment. I will then discuss work developing sensors for secreted proteins to non-invasively measure protein expression in vivo via luminescence and FRET. I will conclude my talk with a brief discussion of my planned research
program that aims to leverage my materials and immune engineering experience to harness bio-responsive materials as translatable tools for real-time monitoring of tissue immunity.

Allison Anderson
Assistant Professor
Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering
University of Colorado Boulder

The future of human spaceflight will send people away from the Earth for longer durations to explore the surface of the moon or Mars. Extravehicular Activity (EVA) will be a critical component of these missions, necessitating advances in spacesuit technology to support elevated human performance. As crews become increasingly autonomous from an Earth-based mission control, human-autonomy interaction and associated decision support tools will also be a critical element. This talk will discuss our research on novel spacesuit architectures and wearable sensors to minimize restricted mobility and injuries during EVA. It will also discuss our work to assess operator workload and situation awareness to enable adaptive autonomy that mitigates the impact of high-risk, strenuous activities. While this research is focused on individuals in extreme environments, it also has direct implications for patient populations here on Earth.

EIHS Lecture: Towards a History of Agrarian Urbanism in India (January 28, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/79649 79649-20438367@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 28, 2021 4:00pm

This talk presents one genealogy for exploring how the city and the countryside were conceptualized in relation to one another in late colonial India. In particular, it will underscore the contribution urban professionals made to managing—and imagining—agrarian space. Rural change and the expert knowledge required to manage the countryside opened paths for urban concepts and categories to reshape agrarian space in a process that, among other things, gradually made the Indian village legible to town planners. In this way, rural space was made subject to an ensemble of institutional forms and practices grounded in emergent urban paradigms.

William Glover teaches modern South Asian history at the University of Michigan. His research interests include South Asian colonial and post-colonial urban and cultural history, social theory, and the material culture of built environments. He is the author of Making Lahore Modern: Constructing and Imagining a Colonial City (University of Minnesota Press, 2008; winner of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies Junior Book Award), and of several articles exploring the imbrication of built environments, knowledge cultures, and urban processes in South Asia.  Professor Glover is the former director of the University of Michigan's Center for South Asian Studies, and former associate director of the International Institute at the University of Michigan.

Free and open to the public. This is a remote event and will take place online via Zoom.

Presented in partnership with the Center for South Asian Studies. This event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

Timothy Jugovic: Timothy "Raz" Jugovic is a 3rd year PhD candidate in Physical chemistry conducting research on relativistic quantum mechanics in the lab of Dr. Paul Zimmerman. Raz previously earned a Master's in chemistry from ISU with research focus on crown ether synthesis. Today he will be talking on the computation of Spin-Orbit coupling in large molecules.

Talk Title and Abstract: "Effective Calculation of Spin-Orbit Coupling in Large Molecules" | Spin-Orbit coupling (SOC) is a relativistic quantum effect resulting from the coupling of electron spin (m{s}) with orbital angular momentum (l) that can play a role in intersystem crossings. Many large molecule catalysts behavior depend on these complex spin interactions that are prohibitively expensive to calculate using traditional methods. An additional complication in heavy atoms, present in many catalysts, is electron correlation which is separately calculated and similarly expensive. Development of cheap and accurate methods of determining relativistic and correlation effects in large molecules is an area of intense computational research. Proposed is a new combinatory computational method called RAS-SF-SOC (Restricted Active Space Spin Flip Spin Orbit Coupling). This method can effectively determine correlation and relativistic effects in large molecules containing many heavy atoms in reasonable computational time.

Jacqueline Larouche: Jacqueline is a third year PhD candidate in Dr. Carlos Aguilar's lab. Her research focuses on elucidating and correcting inter-cellular communication networks in skeletal muscle that are disrupted as a result of severe trauma or aging.

Talk Title and Abstract: "Single cell deconstruction of murine volumetric muscle loss reveals natural killer cell and neutrophil imbalances prevent muscle stem cell mediated regeneration" | Volumetric muscle loss (VML) overwhelms the innate regenerative capacity of mammalian skeletal muscle (SkM), leading to numerous disabilities and reduced quality of life. Immune cells are critical responders to muscle injury and guide muscle stem cell (MuSC) mediated myogenic repair. However, how immune cell infiltration and inter-cellular communication networks are altered following VML to drive pathological outcomes remains unclear. Thus, we sought to characterize the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving fibrotic degeneration of SkM after VML by comparing the healing trajectories between muscle loss injuries that regenerate to those that result in fibrosis. Using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq), lineage-tracing mouse models, in vitro assays, histological analysis, cell transplants, and in vivo small molecule inhibition, we elucidate new cellular and molecular players post VML. We observed that degenerative VML injuries result in persistent infiltration of inflammatory neutrophils. Cytolytic natural killer (NK) cells were also observed to accumulate in degenerative defects and interact with neutrophils via secretion of chemokine receptor type 1 (CCR1) ligands. Intramuscular NK cell transplants significantly reduced neutrophil abundance and enhanced healing rates, while systemic delivery of a CCR1 inhibitor exacerbated neutrophil accumulation. As a consequence of exacerbated neutrophils in degenerative injuries, we observed reductions in MuSC myogenic capacity. The reductions in regenerative potential of MuSCs were also impacted by overexpression of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF1) and local inhibition of TGF1 signaling reduced neutrophil populations and improved tissue morphology. Together, these findings enhance our understanding of immune cell-stem cell communication dynamics governing muscle healing outcomes. This work provides a valuable resource for further exploration into mechanisms driving VML-induced fibrosis and may help elucidate drivers of fibrosis and chronic inflammation in other pathologies.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies

Registration link: http://go.unc.edu/teachMENA

January 28: *Islam Through Art*
Christiane Gruber, University of Michigan
This webinar introduces participants to key issues and themes in Islamic art, including architectural interactions and the importance of ornament and Arabic-script calligraphy. This session also aims to dispel contemporary discourses about figural imagery, especially depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. Finally, we will discuss readings, pedagogical strategies, and online resources which can help teach Islam in a manner that aims to circumvent simplistic presuppositions and “otherizing” binaries.

February 25: *Teaching Middle East History in World History*
Allen Fromherz, Georgia State University
Relevant to high school curricula, we will explore ideas and strategies for using decisive moments in Middle East History to explore larger themes of World History including charisma, religious encounters, commerce, and geographical diversity.

March 18: *Experiential Learning about the Middle East through the Senses*
Barbara Petzen, education consultant on the Middle East and Islam
This webinar will explore and demonstrate a wide variety of sensory approaches to learning about the Middle East. We’ll look at new ways to understand the diversity of the historical and contemporary Middle East through images and film, sound, taste and smell, and tactile experiences.

April 22: *Teaching about the Middle East through Underreported Stories*
Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting
This session with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting will explore reporting on the MENA region and curricular resources that can be used to connect underreported news stories to the classroom. We will outline ways to engage students in global issues through journalism, develop media literacy, encourage critical thinking about the MENA region, and connect with a journalist for a conversation about their experience reporting from the Middle East.

May 20: *Hip Hop and Women's Voices in the Middle East and North Africa*
Angela Williams, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Through the work of rap artists from the MENA region, we will learn about the varied lived experiences of girls and women in this region. Their music and online expressions depict the challenges and pressures they face, as well as spaces for hope and a better future for women and girls.

This series offers five interactive sessions between January and May 2021, featuring resources and strategies for teaching about the Middle East relevant to both in-person and virtual teaching for Grades 6-12 and community colleges. Educators may register for any or all of the sessions. SCECHs from the Michigan Department of Education are available.

The program is a collaboration with the National Resource Center dedicated to Middle East Studies at Duke University-The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Valeria Luiselli is a writer of fiction, essays, and inventive hybrids of the two who challenges conventional notions of authorship and explores the experience of dislocation as a common theme across her many projects. Writing with dry humor and deftly controlled prose in both Spanish and English, she often wrestles with the complexity of translation and draws from an unusually broad range of Latin American, American, and European literary traditions.

Luiselli’s novel *La historia de mis dientes* (2014), translated into English as The *Story of My Teeth* (2015), chronicles the adventures of an auctioneer and teller of tall tales named Gustavo “Highway” Sánchez Sánchez while experimenting with alternative modes of literary production. The project originated as a commission from the art gallery of the Mexican juice corporation Grupo Jumex. Luiselli engaged the workers in the Jumex factory as collaborators in the writing process, sharing installments of the work in progress with them and incorporating their reactions into the novel’s chapters. Her most recent books synthesize the formal inventiveness of her earlier work with her experiences as a court interpreter for unaccompanied child migrants caught in the labyrinth of U.S. immigration policy. In the nonfiction work *Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions* (2017), she demonstrates the impossibility of giving coherent, narrative form to the harrowing and fragmented statements that the immigration intake questionnaire elicits from children facing deportation. These stories, her attempts to document them, and the ethical dilemmas these efforts pose also figure prominently in her novel *Lost Children Archive* (2019). The novel is a fictionalized account of her own family’s road trip from New York to the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, with stories of the unfolding Central American migration crisis nested into the narrative through radio news reports, phone calls to a friend whose daughters are missing, and a novel-within-the-novel that the mother reads aloud about children making their way to an unnamed land. Rather than dividing the work into chapters, Luiselli organizes it around archival “boxes” of materials—audio recordings, texts, maps, and photographs—that her protagonists collect and reference throughout their journey.

As she forges new forms of writing that interweave multiple voices—those of other writers, readers, translators, and the children she interviews—Luiselli is posing profound questions about the various ways we piece together stories and pass them on to subsequent generations.

The Zell Visiting Writers Series brings outstanding writers to campus each semester. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (BA ’64, LLDHon ’13). For more information, please visit the Zell Visiting Writers Program webpage: https://lsa.umich.edu/writers

For any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. Copies of the readings and live, high quality auto-captions/transcriptions will be provided at all events.

Writers' Community Mass Meeting (January 28, 2021 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/80731 80731-20779510@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 28, 2021 8:00pm
Location: Online
Organized By: Maize Pages Student Organizations

Writers' Community is a student-led creative writing group based on workshopping. Each week, members are encouraged to bring their words to be presented to the group for reactions and critique. We are a very laid-back group that aspires to provide constructive criticism and support as we all navigate the sometimes-treacherous terrain of characters, words, and plot twists. Creative writing of any kind is welcomed with open arms. Writing exercises, prompts, and games are frequently featured, adding sparkle and pizzaz to our already scintillating meetings.
