SUMMARY:Film Screening:CES Film. At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)
DESCRIPTION:Sheri Hagen\, director. In German with English subtitles (92 min.\, 2012).\n\nThrough its engagement with blindness as both a trope and a physical reality\, Sheri Hagen’s *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* raises provocative questions regarding color blindness\, race and racism\, and in/visibility in contemporary German society. By challenging the normative category of whiteness\, as well as able-bodiedness and heterosexuality\, the film also explores alternative modes of seeing through the visual medium of cinema.\n \nSheri Hagen is a Nigerian-German director\, screenwriter\, actress\, and founder of the production company Equality Film GmbH. Born in Lagos\, she grew up in Hamburg and has lived and worked in Berlin since the 1990s. After training as a stage actress\, Hagen then appeared in numerous film productions and television series\, before returning to theater in 2010. Across her career\, Hagen has worked on film projects as author\, director\, and producer. *Auf den zweiten Blick (At Second Glance)* is her debut film as a director. It won awards at the Filmfest Emden-Norderney (2012) and the Kirchen Filmfestival Recklinghausen (2013).\n\nThose who register for the Q&A with Sheri Hagen on 1/29/21 will receive a link and password to view the film *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* between January 18-29\, 2021. Register for the discussion at https://myumi.ch/jxo3w.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Weijie Su\, Assistant Professor\, Wharton Statistics Department\, University of Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Privacy-preserving data analysis has been put on a firm mathematical foundation since the introduction of differential privacy (DP) in 2006. This privacy definition\, however\, has some well-known weaknesses: notably\, it does not tightly handle composition. In this talk\, we propose a relaxation of DP that we term \"f-DP\"\, which has a number of appealing properties and avoids some of the difficulties associated with prior relaxations. First\, f-DP preserves the hypothesis testing interpretation of differential privacy\, which makes its guarantees easily interpretable. It allows for lossless reasoning about composition and post-processing\, and notably\, a direct way to analyze privacy amplification by subsampling. We define a canonical single-parameter family of definitions within our class that is termed \"Gaussian Differential Privacy\"\, based on hypothesis testing of two shifted normal distributions. We prove that this family is focal to f-DP by introducing a central limit theorem\, which shows that the privacy guarantees of any hypothesis-testing based definition of privacy (including differential privacy) converge to Gaussian differential privacy in the limit under composition. This central limit theorem also gives a tractable analysis tool. We demonstrate the use of the tools we develop by giving an improved analysis of the privacy guarantees of noisy stochastic gradient descent. \n\nThis is joint work with Jinshuo Dong and Aaron Roth.\n\nhttp://www-stat.wharton.upenn.edu/~suw/\n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed via Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/94350208889\nThere will be a virtual reception to follow

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The History of the Stars: An Introduction to Early Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Library holds an extraordinary collection of manuscripts and early printed books describing the early history of astronomy. These holdings range from ancient papyri to richly illustrated books that made possible the scientific revolution in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries including works by Copernicus\, Galileo and Kepler.\n\nOne of the most impressive highlights of the collection is a one-page manuscript where Galileo himself recorded his observations of the moons of Jupiter for the very first time. Attendants of this workshop will have the unique opportunity to examine closely these artifacts and learn how astronomical ideas were transmitted\, read\, and interpreted from antiquity through early modern Europe.\n\nThis study group led by Pablo Alvarez will meet Friday January 29. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Biophysics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:*“Ultrafast 2D IR Spectroscopy of Membrane Peptide Systems”*\n\nPlasma membranes are the main liaisons between the intercellular and extracellular environment\, playing a critical role in numerous biological processes. Recent research has challenged the long-standing “fluid mosaic model\,” representing membranes as densely packed\, heterogeneous environments. Within these complex membranes are transmembrane proteins which comprise up to 50% of the membrane mass\, and are themselves diverse in sequence\, structure\, and function. Combining two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D IR) and molecular dynamics simulations (MD)\, we have explored membrane complexity from two perspectives: first\, we address the sequence heterogeneity in transmembrane peptides\; and second\, we explore the effect this crowded environment has on the lipids themselves and the implications this has on future membrane studies.\n\nSite-specific 2D IR has been used to directly study localized hydration effects in a lipid membrane upon insertion of pH (Low) Insertion Peptide (pHLIP)\, a model membrane peptide. Semi-quantitative results indicate enhanced water penetration in the membrane core concurrent with peptide insertion\, suggesting the abundance of hydrophilic residues in the pHLIP sequence drives membrane hydration. Further\, crowding experiments have probed ultrafast dynamics at the lipid-water interface of model membranes as a function of transmembrane peptide concentration\, revealing a non-monotonic dependence on peptide concentration linked to interfacial water structure.\n\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99088330811

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. The Spirit Ambulance: Choreographing the End of Life in Thailand
DESCRIPTION:Free event\; register at https://bit.ly/39sKIiE\n\nFrom his recently released book\, *The Spirit Ambulance*\, Dr. Stonington will share stories from the deathbeds of Thai elders: their children’s attempts to pay back their “debts of life” via intensive medical care\, and the ensuing “spirit ambulance\,” a rush to get patients home from the ghost-infested hospital to orchestrate their final breath in a spiritually advantageous place. Out of these stories\, Dr. Stonington will abstract outward from Thailand to Southeast Asia and the globe to examine the effects high-tech medicine on vital life transitions.\n \nScott Stonington is an anthropologist and physician. His primary appointment at U-M is in Anthropology and International Studies. He also practices hospitalist medicine at the VA Ann Arbor and primary care at Neighborhood Family Health Center in Ypsilanti. He has published on end of life and pain management in Thailand\, Buddhism and the body\, and the roles of improvisation and emotion in medical expertise in the U.S. He is also lead editor of the *New England Journal of Medicine*'s \"Case Studies in Social Medicine.\"\n \nStonington’s new book is a great read for anyone interested in the global dynamics of healthcare and biomedicine\, globalization\, rapidly expanding technology\, comparing cultures and systems of meaning\, and the way global forces act upon the lives of individuals worldwide.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Drosophila clock cells use multiple mechanisms to transmit time-of-day signals in the brain
DESCRIPTION:Host: Monica Dus\n\nAbstract: Regulation of circadian behavior and physiology by the *Drosophila* brain clock requires communication from central clock neurons to downstream output regions\, but the mechanism by which clock cells regulate downstream targets is not known. We show here that the pars intercerebralis (PI)\, previously identified as a target of the morning cells in the clock network\, also receives input from evening cells. We determined that morning and evening clock neurons have time of day dependent connectivity to the PI\, which is regulated by specific peptides as well as by fast neurotransmitters. Interestingly\, PI cells that secrete the peptide DH44\, and control rest:activity rhythms\, are inhibited by clock inputs while insulin-producing cells (IPCs) are activated\, indicating that the same clock cells can use different mechanisms to drive cycling in output neurons. Inputs of morning cells to IPCs are relevant for the circadian rhythm of feeding\, reinforcing the role of the PI as a circadian relay that controls multiple behavioral outputs. Our findings provide mechanisms by which clock neurons signal to non-clock cells to drive rhythms of behavior.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: Thinking with The Country and the City: Revisiting the Raymond Williams Classic
DESCRIPTION:Originally published in 1973\, Raymond Williams's The Country and the City has generated concepts that have influenced generations of cultural critics. His magisterial survey of the construction of archetypical images of the country and the city in English literature in the context of the shift from agrarian capitalism to the industrial metropolis has justly acquired canonical status. The book’s analysis of how these images obscured the actual historical and social relations that shaped them continues to remain relevant today. Join our panelists as they discuss how the book continues to inform their own work. They explore the city/country opposition and the political interests it serves in contexts quite different from Williams’s original English focus.\n\n\n\nPanelists:\nKathryn Babayan\nProfessor\, History\, Middle East Studies\, University of Michigan\n\nStephen A. Berrey\nAssociate Professor\, American Culture\, History\, University of Michigan\n\nChristian de Pee\nAssociate Professor\, History\, University of Michigan\n\nMrinalini Sinha (chair)\nAlice Freeman Palmer Professor of History\, University of Michigan\n\nFree and open to the public. This is a remote event and will take place online via Zoom. \n\nThis event is part of the Friday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LUNCH & LEARN: \"A Practical Framework for Real-time Assignment Optimization: Perspectives from DoorDash\" — Sifeng Lin
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to all including U-M students\, faculty\, and staff.\n\nTitle:\nA Practical Framework for Real-time Assignment Optimization: Perspectives from DoorDash\n\nAbstract:\nWhile the field of delivery logistics has been well studied in academia and industry\, we found the common methodologies used to optimize these systems less applicable to improving the efficiency of DoorDash’s real-time last-mile logistics platform. These common methodologies require a stable prototype environment that is difficult to build in our platform and does not allow for the accurate measurement of the algorithm change. To address our specific use case\, we designed an experiment-based framework that allows us to rapidly iterate our algorithms and accurately measures the impact of every algorithm change.\n\nBio:\nSifeng Lin works as operations research scientist in DoorDash. In this role\, he combines operations research and software engineering to solve the real-time dispatching problem\, as well as tackling challenging optimization problems in other frontier of DoorDash business. He has a PhD in Operations Research from the University of Texas at Austin and previously worked as a Sr. operations research specialist in BNSF Railway.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Fossils\, Isotopes\, and Rainforests: New Approaches Challenge Foundational Tenets of Stable Isotope Terrestrial Paleoecology and Biogeographical Reconstructions of Mammals in the Neotropics
DESCRIPTION:Zoom ID# 923 5747 7753\nStable isotope analyses are powerful tools for reconstructing ancient ecologies and ecosystems\, as they are independent of morphology and reflect dietary ecology. The application of stable isotope analyses\, however\, is not without limitations\, as determination of food web dynamics using these methods often relies on poorly tested assumptions. On the other hand\, estimation of geographic ranges of extinct organisms is usually addressed through biological and geological proxies separately leading many times to conflicting results. The structure of this talk is twofold. First\, I will show my work testing some foundational cornerstones on which stable isotope ecology methods rely\, in order to validate the suitability of applying these techniques to different mammalian clades\, and to more reliably interpret the isotopic signals preserved in extinct organisms. Specifically\, I will show the lack of validity of an important assumption behind the interpretation of stable carbon isotope analyses for understanding diets in terrestrial mammalian herbivores. Furthermore\, the results of my studies on Amazonian mammals challenge the existing paradigm governing identification of closed canopy rainforests in the fossil record using mammalian d13C data. Second\, using fossil sloths as a case study\, I will show my ongoing research trying to reconcile Caribbean paleogeography with the evolutionary history of sloths and other mammals in the region. This new phylogeny time-stratified-based approach aims to explain the origin and colonization routes of sloths in the Caribbean and the potential role of abiotic variables (e.g.\, land area over time) in the diversification dynamics of this group of mammals.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum:
DESCRIPTION:Quynh Nguyen\n\nTitle: \nDistinct causal roles of DLPFC and M1 in long-term motor expertise\n\nAbstract:\nDespite the importance of motor skill expertise in human behavior\, our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying long-term motor learning remains limited. While there is growing interest in using neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the development of skilled motor performance\, the current literature faces several limitations. The present study aims to address such shortcomings by combining non-invasive brain stimulation with a fine-grained neuroimaging analysis of spatially distributed patterns of brain activity after six weeks of training on a motor sequencing task. Our pilot results show that over the course of training\, participants markedly speed up sequence execution. While disruption of both the dorsolateral prefrontal and the primary motor cortex produce deficits at all levels of expertise\, we find evidence of a double dissociation as a function of expertise. We also validate the utility of Representational Similarity Analysis in detecting the spatial patterns of brain activity associated with different motor sequences. This allows us to test hypotheses about how the strength of sequence encoding varies across the brain over the development of motor expertise.\n\nNatasha Vernooij\n\nTitle: \nIncongruent cambios de código: Code switching when grammars do not align\n\nAbstract:\nA code switch is when a speaker switches from one language to another\, and these switches can either be congruent or incongruent. For congruent code switches\, the syntax of the two languages is the same. For incongruent code switches\, the syntax of the two languages is different. When the syntaxes for a phrase are equivalent in two languages\, then the bilingual stores a single\, language independent\, grammatical ‘unit’ for that phrase in their mental grammar (Hartsuiker and Pickering\, 2008\; Kootstra\, van Hell\, & Dijkstra\, 2012). Similarly\, bilinguals make language independent predictions about an upcoming syntactic category for congruent code switches (de los Santos\, Boland\, & Lewis\, 2019). However\, few studies have investigated how bilinguals code switch when their two grammars do not align. The current experiments investigate congruent and incongruent code switches to determine what factors facilitate incongruent code switching and if any existing code switching hypothesis can account for incongruent code switches.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Story\, Word\, Sound\, Sway
DESCRIPTION:Story\, Word\, Sound\, Sway is on view at Stamps Gallery January 18\, 2021 – February 28\, 2021. The gallery is currently open Tuesdays and Fridays from 2pm to 7pm to U-M faculty\, staff\, and students with valid MCards only. Learn more about COVID health and safety restrictions prior to your visit:  https://stamps.umich.edu/exhibitions/stamps_gallery\nThe work in the exhibition can also be viewed online: http://stamps.umich.edu/calendar/event-detail/story_word_sound_sway\n\nArtists: Carisa Bledsoe (BFA Interarts ’14)\, Schroeder Cherry (BFA ’76)\, Elshafei Dafalla (MFA ’08)\, Masimba Hwati (MFA ’19)\, Caleb Moss (BFA ’13)\, Senghor Reid (BFA ’99)\, Valencia Robin (MFA ’08)\, Yvette Rock (MFA ’99)\, Wes Taylor (BFA ’04)\, Levester Williams (BFA ’13)\, and Elizabeth Youngblood (BFA ’73)\n\nStory\, Word\, Sound\, Sway is an exhibition of work by eleven Stamps School of Art & Design Alumni using performance\, movement\, text\, sound\, and design to interrogate systems of oppression and interrupt the status quo. It explores themes of alternative histories\, archives\, Black identity\, collective memory\, storytelling\; meshing performance and performativity\, and the interplay of the oral and aural in one’s experience of the world. An undercurrent of movement explored in multiple variations thread the works together\, realized through a variety of methods including painterly gesture\, repetitive mark-making\, performance with an audience or without\, spoken word\, ambient sound\, and reimagined instruments. The exhibition aspires to pull at the loosened threads of a social fabric in crisis\, revealing larger complex histories and art discourses\, nationally and internationally\, framed through the experiences and trajectories of Stamps alumni during their time in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication that will include interviews with each of the alumni artists conducted by current Stamps’ student and exhibition co-curator Moteniola Ogundipe.\n\nStory\, Word\, Sound\, Sway is co-curated by Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan and Moteniola Ogundipe.\n\n \n\nImage: Levester Williams\, “Shift\, Sift\, Swoosh Bods\,” 2018\, (detail\, video still) HD video\, color\, four audio channels\; 17 minutes 33 seconds (full length).

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Henry Louis Gates\, Jr. and Eric Foner: In Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Pausing for a moment of post inaugural reflection\, following one of our nation’s most contentious presidential elections\, this conversation brings together filmmaker\, scholar\, journalist and cultural critic\, Henry Louis Gates\, Jr. with prominent historian Eric Foner to contemplate how a divided nation comes together. The two will discuss Reconstruction\, the all-too-brief period following the Civil War when the United States made its first effort to become an interracial democracy. The period saw the Constitution rewritten to incorporate the ideal of racial equality\, but ended as a result of a violent backlash that erased many of the gains that had been made\, with consequences we still confront as a nation. The program will also preview Gates&#39\; most recent project\, The Black Church\, which will premiere on PBS in February.\n\nHenry Louis Gates\, Jr. is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University. Professor Gates is an author and filmmaker whose work includes Reconstruction: America after the Civil War\, winner of the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award\, and the related books\, Dark Sky Rising: Reconstruction and the Dawn of Jim Crow\, with Tonya Bolden\, and 2019 New York Times Notable Book\, Stony the Road: Reconstruction\, White Supremacy\, and the Rise of Jim Crow. Gates’ groundbreaking genealogy series\, Finding Your Roots\, is now in its sixth season on PBS and has been called “one of the deepest and wisest series ever on television\,” leveraging “the inherent entertainment capacity of the medium to educate millions of Americans about the histories and cultures of our nation and the world.” Gates is the recipient of an Emmy Award\, a Peabody Award\, an NAACP image award\, an MacArthur Foundation “genius award\,” and in 1998 he was the first African American to receive the National Humanities Medal. Gates was named to Time’s 25 Most Influential Americans list in 1997\, to Ebony’s Power 150 list in 2009\, and to Ebony’s Power 100 list in 2010 and 2012.\n\nEric Foner\, DeWitt Clinton Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University\, is one of this country&#39\;s most prominent historians. Professor Foner&#39\;s publications have concentrated on the intersections of intellectual\, political and social history\, and the history of American race relations. One of his best-known books includes Reconstruction: America&#39\;s Unfinished Revolution\, 1863-1877\, winner of the Bancroft Prize\, Parkman Prize\, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. His latest book is The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution . Foner has also been the co-curator\, with Olivia Mahoney\, of two prize-winning exhibitions on American history: A House Divided: America in the Age of Lincoln\, which opened at the Chicago Historical Society in 1990\, and America&#39\;s Reconstruction: People and Politics After the Civil War\, which opened at the Virginia Historical Society in 1995 and traveled to several other locations.\n\nLynette Clemetson is the Director of Wallace House\, Knight-Wallace Fellowships and the Livingston Awards at the University of Michigan. A longtime journalist\, she was a correspondent for Newsweek magazine in the U.S. and Asia\, a national correspondent for The New York Times\, and senior director of strategy and new initiatives at NPR. Wallace House works to sustain and elevate the careers of journalists\, foster civic engagement\, and uphold the role of a free press in democratic society.\n\nThis event is part of the Democracy & Debate theme semester with support from Wallace House and the Ford School of Public Policy. It is also part of the 2021 U-M Reverend Martin Luther King Junior Symposium.
