Born in Lagos, she grew up in Hamburg and has lived and worked in Berlin since the 1990s. After training as a stage actress, Hagen then appeared in numerous film productions and television series, before returning to theater in 2010. Across her career, Hagen has worked on film projects as author, director, and producer. *Auf den zweiten Blick (At Second Glance)* is her debut film as a director. In this talk, we propose a relaxation of DP that we term \"f-DP\", which has a number of appealing properties and avoids some of the difficulties associated with prior relaxations. First, f-DP preserves the hypothesis testing interpretation of differential privacy, which makes its guarantees easily interpretable. It allows for lossless reasoning about composition and post-processing, and notably, a direct way to analyze privacy amplification by subsampling. We define a canonical single-parameter family of definitions within our class that is termed \"Gaussian Differential Privacy\", based on hypothesis testing of two shifted normal distributions. We prove that this family is focal to f-DP by introducing a central limit theorem, which shows that the privacy guarantees of any hypothesis-testing based definition of privacy (including differential privacy) converge to Gaussian differential privacy in the limit under composition. This central limit theorem also gives a tractable analysis tool. We demonstrate the use of the tools we develop by giving an improved analysis of the privacy guarantees of noisy stochastic gradient descent. \r\n\r\nThis is joint work with Jinshuo Dong and Aaron Recent research has challenged the long-standing \u201cfluid mosaic model,\u201d representing membranes as densely packed, heterogeneous environments. Within these complex membranes are transmembrane proteins which comprise up to 50% of the membrane mass, and are themselves diverse in sequence, structure, and function. Combining two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D IR) and molecular dynamics simulations (MD), we have explored membrane complexity from two perspectives: first, we address the sequence heterogeneity in transmembrane peptides; and second, we explore the effect this crowded environment has on the lipids themselves and the implications this has on future membrane studies.\r\n\r\nSite-specific 2D IR has been used to directly study localized hydration effects in a lipid membrane upon insertion of pH (Low) Insertion Peptide (pHLIP), a model membrane peptide. Semi-quantitative results indicate enhanced water penetration in the membrane core concurrent with peptide insertion, suggesting the abundance of hydrophilic residues in the pHLIP sequence drives membrane hydration. These common methodologies require a stable prototype environment that is difficult to build in our platform and does not allow for the accurate measurement of the algorithm change. To address our specific use case, we designed an experiment-based framework that allows us to rapidly iterate our algorithms and accurately measures the impact of every algorithm change.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nSifeng Lin works as operations research scientist in DoorDash. In this role, he combines operations research and software engineering to solve the real-time dispatching problem, as well as tackling challenging optimization problems in other frontier of DoorDash business. The application of stable isotope analyses, however, is not without limitations, as determination of food web dynamics using these methods often relies on poorly tested assumptions. On the other hand, estimation of geographic ranges of extinct organisms is usually addressed through biological and geological proxies separately leading many times to conflicting results. The structure of this talk is twofold. First, I will show my work testing some foundational cornerstones on which stable isotope ecology methods rely, in order to validate the suitability of applying these techniques to different mammalian clades, and to more reliably interpret the isotopic signals preserved in extinct organisms. Specifically, I will show the lack of validity of an important assumption behind the interpretation of stable carbon isotope analyses for understanding diets in terrestrial mammalian herbivores. Furthermore, the results of my studies on Amazonian mammals challenge the existing paradigm governing identification of closed canopy rainforests in the fossil record using mammalian d13C data. Second, using fossil sloths as a case study, I will show my ongoing research trying to reconcile Caribbean paleogeography with the evolutionary history of sloths and other mammals in the region. While there is growing interest in using neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the development of skilled motor performance, the current literature faces several limitations. The present study aims to address such shortcomings by combining non-invasive brain stimulation with a fine-grained neuroimaging analysis of spatially distributed patterns of brain activity after six weeks of training on a motor sequencing task. Our pilot results show that over the course of training, participants markedly speed up sequence execution. While disruption of both the dorsolateral prefrontal and the primary motor cortex produce deficits at all levels of expertise, we find evidence of a double dissociation as a function of expertise. We also validate the utility of Representational Similarity Analysis in detecting the spatial patterns of brain activity associated with different motor sequences. For congruent code switches, the syntax of the two languages is the same. For incongruent code switches, the syntax of the two languages is different. When the syntaxes for a phrase are equivalent in two languages, then the bilingual stores a single, language independent, grammatical \u2018unit\u2019 for that phrase in their mental grammar (Hartsuiker and Pickering, 2008; Kootstra, van Hell, & Dijkstra, 2012). Similarly, bilinguals make language independent predictions about an upcoming syntactic category for congruent code switches (de los Santos, Boland, & Lewis, 2019). One of his best-known books includes Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877, winner of the Bancroft Prize, Parkman Prize, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. His latest book is The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution . Foner has also been the co-curator, with Olivia Mahoney, of two prize-winning exhibitions on American history: A House Divided: America in the Age of Lincoln, which opened at the Chicago Historical Society in 1990, and America's Reconstruction: People and Politics After the Civil War, which opened at the Virginia Historical Society in 1995 and traveled to several other locations.\r\n\r\nLynette Clemetson is the Director of Wallace House, Knight-Wallace Fellowships and the Livingston Awards at the University of Michigan. A longtime journalist, she was a correspondent for Newsweek magazine in the U.S. and Asia, a national correspondent for The New York Times, and senior director of strategy and new initiatives at NPR.
