SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ivo Dinov: Data Science\, Time Complexity\, and Spacekime Analytics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many observable processes demand managing\, harmonizing\, modeling\, analyzing\, interpreting\, and visualizing of large and complex information. There is a substantial need to develop\, validate\, productize\, and support novel mathematical techniques\, advanced statistical computing algorithms\, transdisciplinary tools\, and effective artificial intelligence applications. Spacekime analytics is a new technique for modeling high-dimensional longitudinal data. This approach relies on extending the notions of time\, events\, particles\, and wavefunctions to complex-time (kime)\, complex-events (kevents)\, data\, and inference-functions. We will illustrate how the kime-magnitude (longitudinal time order) and kime-direction (phase) affect the subsequent predictive analytics and the induced scientific inference.\n\nThe mathematical foundation of spacekime calculus reveal various statistical implications including inferential uncertainty and a Bayesian formulation of spacekime analytics. Complexifying time allows the lifting of all commonly observed processes from the classical 4D Minkowski spacetime to a 5D spacekime manifold\, where a number of interesting mathematical problems arise. Direct data science applications of spacekime analytics will be demonstrated using simulated data and clinical observations (e.g.\, structural and functional MRI).\n\nBio: Dr. Ivo D. Dinov directs the Statistics Online Computational Resource (SOCR)\, co-directs the multi-institutional Probability Distributome Project\, and is an associate director for education of the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS).\n\nDr. Dinov is an expert in mathematical modeling\, statistical analysis\, computational processing and visualization of Big Data. He is involved in longitudinal morphometric studies of human development (e.g.\, Autism\, Schizophrenia)\, maturation (e.g.\, depression\, pain) and aging (e.g.\, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases). Dr. Dinov is developing\, validating and disseminating novel technology-enhanced pedagogical approaches for scientific education and active learning.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag | The black hole spectrum in (super)gravity
DESCRIPTION:The talk will focus on the spectrum of near-extremal black holes in gravity and near-BPS black holes in supergravity. For concreteness\, we will study cases in asymptotically four-dimensional flat space and three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter. This will be done by analyzing quantum effects near the horizon captured by an emergent Jackiw-Teitelboim mode at low temperatures. This will allow us to systematically study questions such as the extremal degeneracy and the size of the gap in the black hole spectrum\, which can be compared to some string theory constructions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LSI Seminar Series: Blanton S. Tolbert\, Ph.D.\, Case Western Reserve University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nRNA and related retro viruses persist to pose serious threats to human health and global economies. Disease progression mediated by viral pathogenesis requires numerous intersections between host proteins and viral RNA (vRNA) elements. Host-vRNA complexes drive essential processes in the replication cycles of viruses\; as such\, they represent untapped targets for therapeutic intervention. Members of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) family are cellular proteins often usurped by RNA viruses. The Tolbert lab studies the molecular mechanisms by which RNA viruses redirect hnRNPs to control viral gene expression. In this talk\, Tolbert will describe solution NMR structures of conserved viral RNA elements that regulate splicing and translation. He further will show that conformational adaptation and slow protein motions are fundamental properties by which the cellular hnRNP protein achieve cognate RNA recognition. In new and exciting results\, the lab described the NMR structure of a viral RNA-small molecule complex that inhibits viral replication by attenuating viral translation and shows that the small molecule inhibitor functions through a novel allosteric mechanism to increase the affinity of an RNA- protein complex. The collective knowledge this lab is producing suggests that protein- RNA cooperativity and mutual allostery manifest as idiosyncratic mechanisms that regulate viral gene expression.\n\nAbout theSpeaker:\nBlanton S. Tolbert is a professor of chemistry at Case Western Reserve University\, where he oversees a diverse research group that endeavors to understand biochemical mechanisms by which human pathogenic RNA viruses replicate within cells\, and to leverage this knowledge to identify novel drug targets for therapeutic intervention. Tolbert is the PI of multiple NIH grants\, and he has published in top journals including Nature Communications\, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Tolbert also serves on the NIH Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council (OARAC)\, and he will become the next chair of OARAC in 2021. He is a member of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral Enrichment Program Advisory Board and an editor for the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews. Tolbert is the proud father of two boys\, and in his spare time he enjoys exploring the outdoors in the Cleveland Metroparks.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Jewish Multilingualism in the Midwest: Yiddish Translations of Urban Experience
DESCRIPTION:The study of modern Jewish cultural production in the United States has focused on the East and West coasts\, particularly on the “center” of New York City. This Mellon-Sawyer seminar spotlights the Midwest as an interconnected region where Jewish writing and art flourished\, addressing pressing social and political issues: urban sprawl\, industrialization and worker abuse\, gender\, and racial inequalities. \n\nThe participants in the seminar\, hailing from Midwestern institutions\, will be presenting their research on Yiddish writers in urban contexts such as Detroit or Chicago\, while also asking how might we reassess the landscape of Jewish American culture in view of these newly discussed materials? What contributions did Midwestern artists or those who observed this region make within the field of Yiddish letters? What role did translation and multilingualism play in Jewish writing about Midwestern society and how can we translate twentieth-century Yiddish literature for a contemporary audience?\n\n\nEvent Schedule:\n\nThursday\, February 4th\n\n2:00-3:30 pm\nMaya Barzilai\, University of Michigan: \nOpening remarks \n\nJulian Levinson\, University of Michigan: \nEzra Korman and Jewish Detroit\n\n4:00-5:15 pm\n“Ezra Korman\, Poet of My City”\nPerformance by Mikhl Yashinsky\, followed by Q&A with Mikhail Krutikov\n\n\nFriday\, February 5th\n\n9:00-9:50 am\nErin Faigin\, University of Wisconsin-Madison: \nCenters and Provinces: H. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:EEB Virtual Seminar: Mapping biochemical drivers of phenotypic change
DESCRIPTION:Survival in changing environments requires the acquisition of new heritable traits. However\, mechanisms that safeguard the fidelity of DNA replication often limit raw material available to fuel such novelty. Our research centers on an intriguing resolution to this paradox: intrinsic links between the folding of biological polymers and virtually every trait in an organism provide multiple avenues through which environmental stress can impact evolution\, disease\, and development. Stress-regulated molecular chaperones of protein folding such as Hsp90\, can broadly influence whether genetic variants can produce new phenotypes. We have identified other proteins\, including a protein chaperone of RNA folding\, that act in a conceptually similar fashion\, ‘buffering’ the consequences of accumulating mutations. Other work focuses on the 30% of eukaryotic proteins that do not adopt a single fixed structure. Many mutations associated with metazoan innovation and human diseases occur within such intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Yet the function of this ‘dark matter’ of the proteome is largely unknown. We recently found that IDPs involved in gene control can commonly adopt self-templating conformations – molecular ‘memories’ heritable over long biological timescales. This echoes the paradigm-shifting biology of prion proteins. But the ~50 we discovered frequently drive adaptive gains-of-function and do not form amyloid. Most remarkably\, their self-templating capacity is often conserved from yeast to humans\, leading us to propose that protein-based ‘molecular memories’ might commonly drive new interpretations of the genetic code. In addition to illuminating a new form of epigenetics ‘beyond the chromosome\,’ understanding the difference between physiological and pathological protein aggregation has important implications for many intractable human pathologies.\nJoin us on Zoom

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CLASP Seminar Series: Prof. Shasha Zou
DESCRIPTION:CLASP Prof. Shasha Zou will give a virtual lecture as part of the CLASP Seminar Series. \n\nThis is a Zoom virtual event.\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91943103577?pwd=aEtVenE0SXBCdkVrcU56N1RRWWxZUT09\nMeeting ID: 919 4310 3577\nPasscode: 662986\n\n\"The Bubbly Ionosphere\"\n\nABSTRACT: \nIn the equatorial and low latitude ionosphere\, the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) is the most striking large-scale phenomenon. Embedded within EIA are low-density smaller-scale structures\, i.e.\, the equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs)\, which occur preferentially over the post-sunset local times. EPBs are known to host ionospheric irregularities that can cause severe satellite signal scintillations and even signal loss of lock\, thereby affecting communication and navigation. However\, our understanding of the day-to-day and longitudinal variability of EIA and EPBs is still illusive and thus prohibits forecasting capabilities. In recent years\, the rapidly developing ground-based GNSS receiver network has enabled regional to continental scale measurements of the ionosphere and has revealed rich dynamic structures in those regions during storm time\, such as much widened or asymmetric EIA crest and super equatorial plasma bubbles reaching relatively high latitudes. In this talk\, I will talk about our recent work on super bubbles and machine learning effort to characterize their occurrence better.\n\nPlease join us!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Anti-Racist Community Engagement (For Students): February
DESCRIPTION:This interactive virtual workshop will interrogate the role white supremacy often plays in university community engagement experiences and will explore anti-racist approaches to our work in and with communities. The workshop is designed for students with prior knowledge or experience with community engagement who are interested in learning more about how to practice anti-racism in their engaged course\, service\, project\, or research.\n\nWorkshop content will build on basic concepts of race\, racism\, social identity\, power\, and privilege. If you're newer to those concepts and how they connect to community engagement\, we encourage you to complete modules 1 and 2 of the Community Engagement: Collaborating for Change MOOC and/or attend our Entering\, Engaging\, and Exiting Communities workshop (see upcoming sessions on our homepage) before signing up for this offering. You may also want to read Tania Mitchell's (2008) “Traditional vs. Critical Service-Learning” before attending. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME 500 Seminar: Maria Coronel
DESCRIPTION:BME Faculty Candidate\nMaria Coronel\, Ph.D. \nGeorgia Institute of Technology \n\nSeminar Abstract:\nTwo major challenges to the translation of cellular-based tissue-engineered therapies are the lack of adequate oxygen support post-implantation and the need for systemic immunosuppression to halt the strong inflammatory and immunological response of the host. As such\, strategies that aim at addressing oxygen demand\, and local immunological responses can be highly beneficial in the translation of these therapies. In this seminar\, I will focus on two biomaterial strategies to create a more favorable transplant niche for pancreatic islet transplantation. The first half will describe an in-situ oxygen-releasing biomaterial fabricated through the incorporation of solid peroxides in a silicone polymer. The implementation of this localized\, controlled and sustained oxygen-generator mitigates the activation of detrimental hypoxia-induced pathways in islets and enhances the potency of extrahepatic 3D islet- loaded devices in a diabetic animal model. In the second part\, I will focus on engineering synthetic biomaterials for the delivery of immunomodulatory signals for transplant acceptance. Biomaterial carriers fabricated with polyethylene glycol microgels are used to deliver immunomodulatory signals to regulate the local microenvironment and prevent allograft rejection in a clinically relevant pre-clinical transplant model. The use of synthetic materials as an off-the-shelf platform\, without the need for manipulating the biological cell product\, improves the clinical translatability of this engineered approach. Designing safer\, responsive biomaterials to boost the delivery of targeted therapeutics will significantly reinvigorate interventional cell-based tissue-engineered therapies.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Particle-laden Flows\, From Incompressible Turbulence to Supersonic Jets
DESCRIPTION:Laura Villafane Roca\nAssistant Professor\nAerospace Engineering\nUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\n\nHeavier-than-fluid particles are often found in environmental and engineering applications. Particles may alter the underlying flow dynamics\, disperse non-homogeneously\, trigger coalescence or chemical reactions\, and lead to multi-physics phenomena that can impact the overall flow or system behavior. Whether the presence of particles is intentional or unavoidable\, we need a better understanding of particle-laden flows that supports improved predictive capabilities across a range of regimes. We will discuss two distinct problems involving particle-flow interactions.\n \nPreferential concentration arises due to the interaction of small inertial particles with turbulence. If the flow is exposed to thermal radiation that is partially absorbed by the particles\, preferential concentration leads to fluctuations of transmitted radiation and fluid temperature. Particle-turbulence-radiation interactions are important to solar energy harvesting\, combustion systems and fires. We will show experimental and numerical results from a fully developed turbulent flow laden with micron-size particles and highlight the impact of including real effects in the numerical framework.\n \nThe impingement of supersonic plumes onto a granular surface combines the challenges of time-varying flow characteristics as the surface morphology evolves\, and those of fluid-particle interaction. Erosion of the granular surface\, fluidization\, and entrainment lead to a coupled fluid-surface-particle dynamics problem where the dominant physical mechanisms vary in space and time. The successful landing of a payload and the safety of surrounding assets critically relies on the understanding and prediction of those complex interactions. We will present ongoing efforts to experimentally study plume-granular surface interactions in conditions representative of Moon and Mars landings.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nLaura Villafañe is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on turbulence\, multiphase flows\, flow-surface interactions and on the development of experimental diagnostics and data analysis tools to study these complex flows.\n \nLaura received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid\, Spain\, and a Research Master in Fluid Mechanics followed by Ph.D. from the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics\, Belgium. Prior to joining UIUC she was Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate at the Center for Turbulence Research at Stanford University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ezra Korman\, Poet of My City
DESCRIPTION:The author and anthologist Ezra Korman was born in Kiev and later adopted Detroit as his home\, becoming the city's dean of Yiddish letters. Mikhl Yashinsky\, born in Detroit a few decades later\, has claimed an inheritance of thought and poetry in the author's life and work. At this event\, Yashinsky shares that inheritance and performs Korman's Yiddish poetry in his own translation\, inviting us to visit libraries and dusty synagogue vaults\, guiding us through the author's possessions\, his voice\, his writing\, his grave.\n\nMikhl Yashinsky has taught Yiddish at the University of Michigan\, YIVO\, and The Workers Circle\, and is known to Yiddish theatrical audiences for his performances in Joel Grey's production of Fiddler on the Roof and the title role of The Sorceress.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:No More Promises: Policing Feminist Rage in Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:This talk will trace the ways that activists and ordinary citizens mobilize rage in order to navigate the constraints of colonial capitalism in contemporary Puerto Rico. I argue that the state is preoccupied with the growing rage being articulated by Puerto Ricans\, particularly Puerto Rican feminists\, because rage has the potential to create networks of solidarity grounded in a refusal of the current order. Both the local and federal government have increasingly criminalized articulations of political rage and have utilized the Puerto Rico Police Department to repress displays of rage in the streets. Looking at recent examples\, I show that in their collective rage\, Puerto Ricans who had felt silenced by colonial capitalism\, misogyny\, queer antagonism\, and racism have found a way to push back and articulate a different way of living in Puerto Rico. \n\nJoin us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92939571938

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Roots\, Routes\, and Performative Mobilities: The Next 50 Years of Knowledge Production for Africa and its Diasporas
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the movements of people and ideas over centuries between and among various geographies of Africa and its diasporas and the impact of such mobilities on shaping politics and identities for people of African descent. Centering the analysis on the country of Liberia and its connections to the United States over several centuries\, the lecture presents the concept of “performative mobilities” to frame the larger consequences of movement. Moreover\, the lecture argues for the central role that a focus on mobilities will play in the next 50 years of knowledge production in African and African Diaspora Studies more generally.\n \nFebruary 4\, 2021 at 4 p.m. \nFeaturing\nYolanda Covington-Ward\,\nDepartment Chair\, Associate Professor\, Department of Africana Studies\nSecondary Appointment\, Department of Anthropology\, President\, Association for Africanist Anthropology (AfAA)\nExecutive Board Member\, Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD)\, University of Pittsburgh\nYolanda Covington-Ward received her Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.\nZoom Register:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UQH7psqiQb-CP67h9En2wQ

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIA Lecture | The Social Life of Roman Soldiers: The Role of Wives\, Children\, and Families in Roman Military Communities
DESCRIPTION:Research over the past few decades has shown quite clearly that women and children were part of life in the Roman army far more than had ever been considered before. The evidence and spatial patterning of material within and outside Roman forts make this clear\, but research on the social role of these individuals still lags behind. \n\nThis online presentation concentrates on Dr. Greene’s current research into this aspect of the Roman army\, considering the evidence that illuminates the varied roles of non-combatants within these somewhat unique settlements. The presentation highlights the very different realities for the wives and children of officers and the family members of\, for instance\, a foot soldier\, who was paid far less and was not legally allowed to contract a marriage while serving. \n\nThis lecture follows on past talks Dr. Greene has given that present the archaeological evidence for the presence of women at Vindolanda and pushes the argument toward women’s social roles within military communities.\n\nThis lecture is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America.
