SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Laura Balzano\, Associate Professor\, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In order to draw inferences from large\, high-dimensional datasets\, we often seek simple structure that model the phenomena represented in those data. Low-rank linear structure is one of the most flexible and efficient such models\, allowing efficient prediction\, inference\, and anomaly detection. However\, classical techniques for learning low-rank models assume your data have only minor corruptions that are uniform over samples. Modern research in optimization has begun to develop new techniques to handle realistic messy data — where data are missing\, have wide variations in quality\, and/or are observed through nonlinear measurement systems.\n\nIn this talk we will focus on two problems. In the first\, our data are heteroscedastic\, ie\, corrupted by one of several noise variances. This is common in problems like sensor networks or medical imaging\, where different measurements of the same phenomenon are taken with different quality sensing (eg high or low radiation). In this context\, learning the low-rank structure via PCA suffers from treating all data samples as if they are equally informative. We will discuss our theoretical results on weighted PCA and new algorithms for the non-convex probabilistic PCA formulation of this problem. In the second part of the talk we will extend the matrix completion problem to cases where the columns are points on low-dimensional nonlinear algebraic varieties. We discuss two optimization approaches to this problem\, one kernelized algorithm and one that leverages existing LRMC techniques on a tensorized representation of the data. We also provide a formal mathematical justification for the success of our method and experimental results showing that the new approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods for matrix completion in many situations.\n\nhttps://web.eecs.umich.edu/~girasole/?page_id=10\n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed via Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/94350208889\nThere will be a virtual reception to follow

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Coming Global Storms: The Critical Impact & Future of Weather Forecasting
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Atlantic cyclone season shattered historical records for the number of tropical/subtropical storms in a single year and the highest number of storms since 1916 to make landfall. These storms are becoming stronger\, more frequent\, and with greater rainfall than ever before\, leading to higher loss of life and economic damage. Like Earth\, space is a place of potentially violent storms\, transferring energy from the solar wind into disturbances in our planet's atmosphere and space environment. These storms have the potential to cause disruptions and failures of networked systems around the world.\n\nIn this discussion moderated by Eric Michielssen\, hear from Tuija Pulkkinen and Chris Ruf about the coming global storms and what Michigan Engineering is doing to better help warn and protect people against their risks.\n\nThis is a zoom presentation. \nRegistration link: https://umich.formstack.com/forms/clasp_2_5_21_rsvp_form\n\nMeet the speakers: \n\nEric Michielssen received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering (Magna Cum Laude) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven\, Belgium\, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Research where he provides support for the College of Engineering’s research enterprise. In addition to this role\, he served as the University’s Associate Vice President for Advanced Research Computing from 2013 to 2018. In this role\, he helped develop several new degree programs in computational and data science and brought together faculty from disparate disciplines to tackle interdisciplinary problems using advanced computational methods.\n\nTuija Pulkkinen received her Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics from the University of Helsinki in Finland. She is currently the Professor and Chair of the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan. She has worked previously as Dean and Vice President for Research and Innovation at Aalto University and as Research Professor at the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Prof. Pulkkinen’s research interests focus on the plasma physics of the Sun-Earth system\, including numerical simulations and the development of methods that help improve space weather forecasts.\n\nChris Ruf received a B.A. degree in physics from Reed College and a Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He is currently the Frederick Bartman Collegiate Professor of Climate and Space Science at the University of Michigan. He has worked previously at Intel Corporation\, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, and Penn State University. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Ancient Africa in the Time of Black Lives Matter: Writing a New Archaeology of Kush
DESCRIPTION:This recorded lecture is available to view on the Kelsey Museum YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/wjYvtR5XbY8\n\nLong histories of colonialism and structural racism have distorted our understanding of the ancient cultures of Africa and diminished their contributions to world history. A confluence of movements toward social justice make this an important moment to reconsider the archaeology and history of ancient Kush\, centered in the Nile valley of northern Sudan. In this Fash Talk\, Geoff will give highlights from a book project on ancient Kush he is beginning with his Sudanese colleague Sami Elamin.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin us via Zoom at:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94856640990\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Interdisciplinary Seminar on Social Science Methodology (I3SM)
DESCRIPTION:The primary function of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Social Science Methodology (I3SM) is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for students and faculty to present their current projects and to receive feedback on either the methodological component of their project or a methodology under development. Presenters can also present new research questions and ideas and receive ideas about which methodologies would work best to tackle such questions. We define methodology broadly as the approaches to which data is collected and/or organized to give empirical content to social science research. It includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.\n\nTo join the meeting via Zoom\, email skuzushi@umich.edu for the meeting link.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Microbiota Coordinates Diurnal Rhythms\, Intestinal Innate Immunity w/ Host Circadian Clock
DESCRIPTION:Host: Morgan DeSantis\nAbstract: Environmental light cycles entrain circadian feeding behaviors in animals that produce rhythms in exposure to foodborne bacteria. It remains unclear whether there are corresponding immunological rhythms that anticipate this microbial exposure. Here\, we show that the intestinal microbiota generates diurnal rhythms in innate immunity that synchronize with host feeding rhythms. Rhythmic expression of select antimicrobial proteins was driven by daily rhythms in epithelial attachment by segmented filamentous bacteria (SFB)\, a member of the mouse intestinal microbiota. Rhythmic SFB attachment was driven by the circadian clock through control of host feeding rhythms. Mechanistically\, rhythmic SFB attachment activated an immunological circuit involving type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3). This circuit triggered oscillations in epithelial STAT3 expression that produced rhythmic antimicrobial protein expression and caused resistance to intestinal bacterial infection to vary across the day-night cycle. Thus\, host feeding rhythms are synchronized with rhythms in intestinal innate immunity that anticipate exogenous microbial exposure.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Case\, the Space\, and the Pace for Leading Inclusively
DESCRIPTION:How many of us try to enter spaces we thought would be open to us that aren’t? How many of us block others from accessing spaces\, from being included and from experiencing belonging? There are some who know and feel justified in our actions. Some of us don’t even know that we do this. Others of us know it\, but do not know how to not do it. And there are more and more of us who do not yet know how\, but are taking steps to learn.\nThe Leading Inclusively Lab combines diversity\, equity\, and inclusion concepts with complexity and adult development ideas and practices. However\, rather than focus on particular frameworks\, we are attempting to facilitate a lived experience of what it means to lead and be led inclusively. The program is a lab where we dare to connect and stumble across our differences.\nIn this experiential session\, we will explore and experience some inclusive leadership competencies together. Three lessons from the Leading Inclusively Lab will be shared: (1) being grounded in and explicit about the case for diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging\; (2) fostering a space that invites\, recognizes\, and respects all kinds of social identity and cultural differences\; and (3) slowing down to love people publicly across their differences.\nThis workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/DE9AZ.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time (one week preferred) to arrange for your requested accommodation(s) or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:AE200 Seminar Series\, Boeing in Space
DESCRIPTION:Raenaurd Turpin\nChief Engineer and CTO\nBoeing Commercial Satellites\n\nThis new age of space exploration will require a robust\, interconnected ecosystem of low-earth-orbit AND cislunar and deep-space platforms and operations. Even today\, we can see how interconnected systems work in space….and the role that a strong space infrastructure – stretching from LEO to deep space – plays in successful missions. Along with aerospace engineering technologies\, innovations from other industries are being applied to space: additive manufacturing\, virtual reality\, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems…just to name a few. We are standing at another crossroads in human history as we venture deeper into space. At Boeing\, we are building the future. Follow our journey – and maybe even join us – as we connect\, protect\, explore and inspire the world.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nRaenaurd Turpin is the Chief Engineer of Boeing Commercial Satellite Systems and Common Products (CSCP). He also leads advanced satellite architecture development and technology insertion as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for Commercial Satellite Business Development. In 2018\, Raenaurd was recognized as Boeing Defense\, Space\, and Security (BDS) Engineer of the Year\, in addition to BEYA Black Engineer of the Year. As Chief Architect and System Engineering Lead for the O3b mPOWER campaign\, he led the team through a significant evolution of the design. Their efforts yielded increased efficiency (mass\, power\, operational complexity) and lower design complexity and risk\, all while aligning to the customer’s affordability target. As a result\, Boeing was awarded contracts to build seven satellites using this advanced digital payload design. Today\, the O3b mPower constellation is in production. Turpin has also performed as a Major Supplier Program Manager for National Security Programs. In addition to this program management role\, Raenaurd has also lead teams to develop the Next Generation of Wideband Global Satcom (WGS) Satellites and implement Ground-Based Anti-Jam Enhancements for the existing WGS constellation.\n\nTurpin has previously held roles in business capture as well as systems architecture & design\, and began his career at Boeing as a phased array antenna analyst and digital signal processing (DSP) subsystem engineer\, holding a patent for phased array calibration methodology. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University in 1997\, played in the Rose Bowl as member of the PAC-10 Championship Football team\, and completed credentials towards MS in Electrical Engineering in 1999.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Story\, Word\, Sound\, Sway
DESCRIPTION:Story\, Word\, Sound\, Sway is on view at Stamps Gallery January 18\, 2021 – February 28\, 2021. The gallery is currently open Tuesdays and Fridays from 2pm to 7pm to U-M faculty\, staff\, and students with valid MCards only. Learn more about COVID health and safety restrictions prior to your visit:  https://stamps.umich.edu/exhibitions/stamps_gallery\nThe work in the exhibition can also be viewed online: http://stamps.umich.edu/calendar/event-detail/story_word_sound_sway\n\nArtists: Carisa Bledsoe (BFA Interarts ’14)\, Schroeder Cherry (BFA ’76)\, Elshafei Dafalla (MFA ’08)\, Masimba Hwati (MFA ’19)\, Caleb Moss (BFA ’13)\, Senghor Reid (BFA ’99)\, Valencia Robin (MFA ’08)\, Yvette Rock (MFA ’99)\, Wes Taylor (BFA ’04)\, Levester Williams (BFA ’13)\, and Elizabeth Youngblood (BFA ’73)\n\nStory\, Word\, Sound\, Sway is an exhibition of work by eleven Stamps School of Art & Design Alumni using performance\, movement\, text\, sound\, and design to interrogate systems of oppression and interrupt the status quo. It explores themes of alternative histories\, archives\, Black identity\, collective memory\, storytelling\; meshing performance and performativity\, and the interplay of the oral and aural in one’s experience of the world. An undercurrent of movement explored in multiple variations thread the works together\, realized through a variety of methods including painterly gesture\, repetitive mark-making\, performance with an audience or without\, spoken word\, ambient sound\, and reimagined instruments. The exhibition aspires to pull at the loosened threads of a social fabric in crisis\, revealing larger complex histories and art discourses\, nationally and internationally\, framed through the experiences and trajectories of Stamps alumni during their time in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication that will include interviews with each of the alumni artists conducted by current Stamps’ student and exhibition co-curator Moteniola Ogundipe.\n\nStory\, Word\, Sound\, Sway is co-curated by Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan and Moteniola Ogundipe.\n\n \n\nImage: Levester Williams\, “Shift\, Sift\, Swoosh Bods\,” 2018\, (detail\, video still) HD video\, color\, four audio channels\; 17 minutes 33 seconds (full length).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Information Transfer with a Gravitating Bath
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Link: http://myumi.ch/O4P7E\n\nRecent progress in our understanding of black hole evaporation\nhas mostly occurred in the context of black holes coupled to an\nexternal\, non-gravitating bath. In order to compare and contrast to what\nhappens to black holes in asymptotically flat space it is imperative to\nunderstand whether the non-gravitating bath is just some external\nspectator or actively changes the physics in this system. Equivalently\,\none can wonder to what extent the results generalize to the case of a\ngravitating bath. We use Randall-Sundrum braneworlds\, and their\nholographic interpretation\, to answer this important question.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Using Alteration Minerals Chemical and Isotopical Variations as a Proxy for Unravelling the Formation of Andean Iron Oxide Copper Gold Deposits
DESCRIPTION:Meeting ID: 99940580089\nIron oxide copper gold deposits (IOCG) are a globally important source for Cu\, Fe and Au\, but also for strategic elements such as Co\, U and REE. Despite their relevance these deposits comprise an ill-defined clan with a broad range of different genetic models that impact proper exploration. Within this scenario geochemical proxies have proven to be a more successful tool for characterizing IOCG deposits\, focusing on pyrite\, magnetite and more recently actinolite. The chemical and isotopical variations of these minerals provide unique information on the hydrothermal fluid composition\, source and temperature variations. The results that will be shown suggest that IOCG deposits form through a complex story of episodic pulsing\, focusing and cooling of hydrothermal fluids.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium (virtual): \"Bilingual language control\, or how bilinguals manage to stick to one language error-free\"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ivanova\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at El Paso\, will present \"Bilingual language control\, or how bilinguals manage to stick to one language error-free.\"\n\nABSTRACT\nBilinguals are mental jugglers\, and skilled ones\, too: They easily switch languages when they want to but accurately keep to the same language when their other language may not be understood. To avoid saying something in the wrong language by mistake\, bilinguals need to engage language control mechanisms (in the most widely accepted view\, inhibition of the non-target language: Green\, 1998). Understanding language control is necessary to understand the potential sources of the widely-discussed bilingual mental and neural adaptations (aka “the bilingual advantage”)\, but currently there are a lot of open questions. In this talk\, I will examine whether language control mechanisms are specific to bilinguals or are wider-application mechanisms for interference resolution\; whether language control is applied only once after a language switch or all the time\; and whether it is limited to lexico-semantic information or also functions over structural representations. Finally\, I will present work showing for the first time how language control manifests in spontaneous connected speech\, and will discuss how such work can help constrain theories of bilingual “mental juggling”.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Musicology Lecture: National Anthems: Signifiers of Dominance and Oppression
DESCRIPTION:On Jan 6\, 2021\, insurrectionists sang the Star Spangled Banner and waved the confederate flag while violently invading The Capitol. Contrast this with moments in 2016\, when African American NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick  knelt quietly and peacefully during the Star-Spangled Banner. These gestures\, both related to the National anthem\, varied widely in action\, perception\, and meaning. These differences\, rooted in the racial and racist history of the United States\, draw attention to the very notion of a national anthem. Long before Kaepernick\, Black folks in the United States have been questioning this song that was written by a slave-holding anti-abolitionist. These same questions should apply in African countries as well. How have national anthems been used to reinforce or dilute national pride in African countries.  Often these songs are sonic reflections of the colonized past\, a great irony given the troubled relationships between these countries and their colonial “masters.” This presentation explores the complex relationship between official national anthems and black folks\, and considers alternative songs that Africans and African Americans have embraced as a way of authoring their own sense of national identity and challenging enduring systems of oppression.\n \nSpeaker Bio: \nStephanie Shonekan is Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Science and Professor of Music at the University of Missouri. In 2003\, she earned a PhD in Ethnomusicology and Folklore with a minor in African American Studies from Indiana University. From 2003-2011\, she taught at Columbia College Chicago\, and from 2011-2018\, she was a faculty member at the University of Missouri in the Black Studies Department and the School of Music. From 2015-2018\, she was chair of the Department of Black Studies at the University of Missouri.  From 2018-2020\, she was professor and chair of the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. Shonekan's dual heritage combining West Africa with the West Indies allows her to straddle the black world comfortably.  She has published articles on afrobeat\, Fela Kuti\, as well as American and Nigerian hip-hop\, and American country music.  Her publications explore the nexus where identity\, history\, culture and music meet. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Pedro Reyes: At Home in Coyoacán
DESCRIPTION:Mexican artist Pedro Reyes has won international attention for large-scale projects that address current social and political issues. Through a varied practice utilizing sculpture\, performance\, video\, and activism\, Reyes explores the power of individual and collective organization to incite change through communication\, creativity\, happiness\, and humor. He designs ongoing projects that propose playful solutions to social problems. From turning guns into musical instruments\, to hosting a People’s United Nations to address pressing concerns\, to offering ecologically-friendly grasshopper burgers from a food cart\, Reyes transforms existing problems into ideas for a better world. In the artist’s hands\, complex subjects like political and economic philosophies are reframed in ways that are easy to understand\, such as a puppet play featuring Karl Marx and Adam Smith fighting over how to share cookies.\n\nIn 2008\, Reyes initiated the ongoing Palas por Pistolas where 1\,527 guns were collected in Mexico through a voluntary donation campaign to produce the same number of shovels to plant 1\,527 trees. This led to Disarm (2012)\, where 6\,700 destroyed weapons were transformed into a series of musical instruments. In 2011\, Reyes initiated Sanatorium\, a transient clinic that provides short unexpected treatments mixing art and psychology. Originally commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum in New York City\, Sanatorium went on to many international iterations. In 2013\, he presented the first edition of pUN: The People’s United Nations at Queens Museum in New York City. pUN is an experimental conference in which regular citizens act as delegates for each of the countries in the UN and seek to apply techniques and resources from social psychology\, theater\, art\, and conflict resolution to geopolitics. In 2015\, he received the U.S. State Department Medal for the Arts and the Ford Foundation Fellowship.\n\nReyes has had solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Miami (2014)\; The Power Plant\, Toronto (2014)\; the Jumex Museum\, Mexico City (2014)\; the Queens Museum of Art\, Queens\, New York (2013)\; Labor\, Mexico City (2012\, 2010)\; Walker Art Center\, Minneapolis (2011)\; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York (2011)\; CCA Kitakyushu\, Kitakyushu\, Japan (2009)\; Bass Museum\, Miami (2008)\; and San Francisco Art Institute (2008). He has also participated in Sharjah Biennial 11\, Sharjah\, United Arab Emirates\; In the Spirit of Utopia\, Whitechapel Gallery\, London\; and The Carnegie International\, Pittsburgh.\n\nOur 2020-2021 Series is brought to you with the support of our streaming partners\, Detroit Public Television and PBS Books.\n\nHow to WatchAll events will be webcast on Fridays at 8pm (ET) at http://pennystampsevents.org and https://dptv.org/pennystamps.
