Low-rank linear structure is one of the most flexible and efficient such models, allowing efficient prediction, inference, and anomaly detection. However, classical techniques for learning low-rank models assume your data have only minor corruptions that are uniform over samples. Modern research in optimization has begun to develop new techniques to handle realistic messy data \u2014 where data are missing, have wide variations in quality, and\/or are observed through nonlinear measurement systems.\r\n\r\nIn this talk we will focus on two problems. In the first, our data are heteroscedastic, ie, corrupted by one of several noise variances. This is common in problems like sensor networks or medical imaging, where different measurements of the same phenomenon are taken with different quality sensing (eg high or low radiation). In this context, learning the low-rank structure via PCA suffers from treating all data samples as if they are equally informative. We will discuss our theoretical results on weighted PCA and new algorithms for the non-convex probabilistic PCA formulation of this problem. In the second part of the talk we will extend the matrix completion problem to cases where the columns are points on low-dimensional nonlinear algebraic varieties. We discuss two optimization approaches to this problem, one kernelized algorithm and one that leverages existing LRMC techniques on a tensorized representation of the data. He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Research where he provides support for the College of Engineering\u2019s research enterprise. In addition to this role, he served as the University\u2019s Associate Vice President for Advanced Research Computing from 2013 to 2018. In this role, he helped develop several new degree programs in computational and data science and brought together faculty from disparate disciplines to tackle interdisciplinary problems using advanced computational methods.\r\n\r\nTuija Pulkkinen received her Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics from the University of Helsinki in Finland. She is currently the Professor and Chair of the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan. She has worked previously as Dean and Vice President for Research and Innovation at Aalto University and as Research Professor at the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Prof. Pulkkinen\u2019s research interests focus on the plasma physics of the Sun-Earth system, including numerical simulations and the development of methods that help improve space weather forecasts.\r\n\r\nChris Ruf received a B.A. degree in physics from Reed College and a Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He is currently the Frederick Bartman Collegiate Professor of Climate and Space Science at the University of Michigan. Here, we show that the intestinal microbiota generates diurnal rhythms in innate immunity that synchronize with host feeding rhythms. Rhythmic expression of select antimicrobial proteins was driven by daily rhythms in epithelial attachment by segmented filamentous bacteria (SFB), a member of the mouse intestinal microbiota. Rhythmic SFB attachment was driven by the circadian clock through control of host feeding rhythms. Follow our journey \u2013 and maybe even join us \u2013 as we connect, protect, explore and inspire the world.\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker...\r\n\r\nRaenaurd Turpin is the Chief Engineer of Boeing Commercial Satellite Systems and Common Products (CSCP). He also leads advanced satellite architecture development and technology insertion as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for Commercial Satellite Business Development. In 2018, Raenaurd was recognized as Boeing Defense, Space, and Security (BDS) Engineer of the Year, in addition to BEYA Black Engineer of the Year. As Chief Architect and System Engineering Lead for the O3b mPOWER campaign, he led the team through a significant evolution of the design. Their efforts yielded increased efficiency (mass, power, operational complexity) and lower design complexity and risk, all while aligning to the customer\u2019s affordability target. As a result, Boeing was awarded contracts to build seven satellites using this advanced digital payload design. Today, the O3b mPower constellation is in production. Turpin has also performed as a Major Supplier Program Manager for National Security Programs. In addition to this program management role, Raenaurd has also lead teams to develop the Next Generation of Wideband Global Satcom (WGS) Satellites and implement Ground-Based Anti-Jam Enhancements for the existing WGS constellation.\r\n\r\nTurpin has previously held roles in business capture as well as systems architecture & design, and began his career at Boeing as a phased array antenna analyst and digital signal processing (DSP) subsystem engineer, holding a patent for phased array calibration methodology. To avoid saying something in the wrong language by mistake, bilinguals need to engage language control mechanisms (in the most widely accepted view, inhibition of the non-target language: Green, 1998). Understanding language control is necessary to understand the potential sources of the widely-discussed bilingual mental and neural adaptations (aka \u201cthe bilingual advantage\u201d), but currently there are a lot of open questions. In this talk, I will examine whether language control mechanisms are specific to bilinguals or are wider-application mechanisms for interference resolution; whether language control is applied only once after a language switch or all the time; and whether it is limited to lexico-semantic information or also functions over structural representations. Contrast this with moments in 2016, when African American NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick \u00a0knelt quietly and peacefully during the Star-Spangled Banner. These gestures, both related to the National anthem, varied widely in action, perception, and meaning. These differences, rooted in the racial and racist history of the United States, draw attention to the very notion of a national anthem. Long before Kaepernick, Black folks in the United States have been questioning this song that was written by a slave-holding anti-abolitionist. These same questions should apply in African countries as well. How have national anthems been used to reinforce or dilute national pride in African countries.\u00a0 Often these songs are sonic reflections of the colonized past, a great irony given the troubled relationships between these countries and their colonial \u201cmasters.\u201d This presentation explores the complex relationship between official national anthems and black folks, and considers alternative songs that Africans and African Americans have embraced as a way of authoring their own sense of national identity and challenging enduring systems of oppression.\n\u00a0\nSpeaker Bio: \nStephanie Shonekan is Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Science and Professor of Music at the University of Missouri. In 2003, she earned a PhD in Ethnomusicology and Folklore with a minor in African American Studies from Indiana University. From 2003-2011, she taught at Columbia College Chicago, and from 2011-2018, she was a faculty member at the University of Missouri in the Black Studies Department and the School of Music. From 2015-2018, she was chair of the Department of Black Studies at the University of Missouri.\u00a0 From 2018-2020, she was professor and chair of the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.\u00a0Shonekan's\u00a0dual heritage combining West Africa with the West Indies allows her to straddle the black world comfortably.\u00a0 She has published articles on afrobeat, Fela Kuti, as well as American and Nigerian hip-hop, and American country music.\u00a0 Her publications explore the nexus where identity, history, culture and music meet. Through a varied practice utilizing sculpture, performance, video, and activism, Reyes explores the power of individual and collective organization to incite change through communication, creativity, happiness, and humor. He designs ongoing projects that propose playful solutions to social problems. From turning guns into musical instruments, to hosting a People\u2019s United Nations to address pressing concerns, to offering ecologically-friendly grasshopper burgers from a food cart, Reyes transforms existing problems into ideas for a better world. In the artist\u2019s hands, complex subjects like political and economic philosophies are reframed in ways that are easy to understand, such as a puppet play featuring Karl Marx and Adam Smith fighting over how to share cookies.\r\n\r\nIn 2008, Reyes initiated the ongoing Palas por Pistolas where 1,527 guns were collected in Mexico through a voluntary donation campaign to produce the same number of shovels to plant 1,527 trees. This led to Disarm (2012), where 6,700 destroyed weapons were transformed into a series of musical instruments. In 2011, Reyes initiated Sanatorium, a transient clinic that provides short unexpected treatments mixing art and psychology. Originally commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Sanatorium went on to many international iterations. In 2013, he presented the first edition of pUN: The People\u2019s United Nations at Queens Museum in New York City. pUN is an experimental conference in which regular citizens act as delegates for each of the countries in the UN and seek to apply techniques and resources from social psychology, theater, art, and conflict resolution to geopolitics. In 2015, he received the U.S. State Department Medal for the Arts and the Ford Foundation Fellowship.\r\n\r\nReyes has had solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (2014); The Power Plant, Toronto (2014); the Jumex Museum, Mexico City (2014); the Queens Museum of Art, Queens, New York (2013); Labor, Mexico City (2012, 2010); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2011); Solomon R.
