SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Science Brown Bag: Self-regulation forecasts physical health and preparedness for old age
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe ability to regulate one’s own emotions\, thoughts\, and behaviors in early life sets the stage for many positive outcomes in later life\, including longevity. In this talk\, I will show that self-regulation also predicts how well people age. Leveraging longitudinal and nationwide-register data from two studies\, I will (1) demonstrate how self-regulation in early life is linked to the pace of aging and aging preparedness in midlife\, and (2) characterize the implications of self-regulation for population lifespan and healthspan.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:\"Black Bottom Saints\" by Alice Randall
DESCRIPTION:Alice Randall’s magical “Black Bottom Saints” brings to life Detroit’s legendary neighborhood\, one of the most influential\, artful Black communities in America. The novel\, reminiscent of E.L. Doctorow’s “Ragtime”\, comes alive through the voice of Joseph “Ziggy” Johnson (1913-1968) who was a real-life nightclub impresario\, dance studio instructor\, and entertainment columnist for the Michigan Chronicle.\n\nIt takes its shape from the Catholic Saints Day Books with Ziggy choosing his own “52 Saints.” Randall balances the stories of these larger-than-life “Saints” (Dina Washington\, Joe Louis\, and Sammy Davis\, Jr.) with local heroes (Charles Diggs\, UAW negotiator Marc Stepp\, and Maxine Powell)\, and creates enthralling characters whose unstoppable ambition\, love of style\, and faith in community made this black Midwestern neighborhood the rival of New York City’s Harlem.\n\nAlice Randall was born in Detroit and raised in Washington DC. She is a Harvard-educated author of novels\, including “The Wind Done Gone”\, “Pushkin and the Queen of Spades”\, “Rebel Yell”\, and “Ada’s Rules”. She is also the first African American woman to write a #1 Country and Western song (XXX’s and OOO’s which celebrates Aretha Franklin). With her daughter\, Caroline Randall Williams\, she co-authored the acclaimed cookbook “Soul Food Love” which won the NAACP Image award and the young adult novel “The Diary of B. B. Bright”\, Possible Princess”\, which received the Phillis Wheatley Award. Alice Randall is a Professor and Writer-in-Residence at Vanderbilt University.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag: A relational approach to ethnic-racial discrimination: Testing selection\, influence\, and group membership
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe United States is becoming more diverse\, yet ethnoracial segregation and discrimination remains problematic in schools today. During adolescence\, peers become a socialization mechanism\, and youth tend to befriend peers with a shared race-ethnicity. However\, little is known about how relationships between same- and different- ethnoracial peers influence exposure to discrimination. This study explores how two main hypotheses—social selection and social influence—explain similarities and differences in exposure to discrimination among high school friends. Perceived discrimination may drive apart distinct ethnoracial groups and bring together ingroup members (vis-à-vis “attraction-repulsion”). Students may also be exposed to discrimination that their same ethnoracial friends experience as they are likely to be shared and discussed within social networks\, consequently strengthening or validating their own experiences of discrimination. To disentangle these two mechanisms\, we employed a network science perspective\, using stochastic actor-oriented modeling (SAOM)\, in two ethnoracially diverse high school settings (N=4454\; 9-12th grade\; 50% boys). Confirming prior empirical observations\, the networks in the two schools displayed significant ethnoracial homophily. Simultaneously\, homogeneity in discrimination was greater among same-ethnic friends compared to cross-ethnic friends. Though some differences were observed between the ethnoracial groups\, overall\, the SOAM findings provide modest support for social selection while providing some additional support for social influence\, in particular for ethnoracial minorities. We conclude that some of the observed homogeneity in discrimination among same-ethnic friends operates in part via social influence and to a lesser extent by social selection. The findings illustrate how perceptions of ethnic-racial discrimination operate across social networks.\n\nSignificance Statement\nIn an increasingly diverse and segregated US context\, ethnic-racial discrimination remains problematic disproportionally affecting persons of color\, including youth. Many studies have reported on the adverse health consequences that result from discrimination by peers and adults\, but little is known about its relational consequences. Here\, we employ a network science perspective to examine the relational consequences of exposure to discrimination in diverse high school settings. Our method reveals that some of the observed homogeneity in discrimination among same-ethnic friends is explained by the tendency to become more similar to same-ethnic friends over time and some by a tendency to befriend same-ethnic peers with shared perceptions of ethnic-racial discrimination. These findings illustrate how perceptions of ethnic-racial discrimination operate across social networks.\n\nKeywords: race and ethnicity\, segregation\, homophily\, discrimination\, friendship\, social networks

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:What Real Cases Teach us about Human Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:The Human Trafficking Clinic (HTC) at the University of Michigan Law School\, launched in 2009\, is the first clinical law program solely dedicated to the issue of human trafficking. Human trafficking can be simply understood as compelled service. The legal clinic model consists of clinical faculty supervising students as they prepare for each aspect of their cases. Students move beyond the theory of the classroom into the real-world practice of law. During this session\, Elizabeth Campbell\, Co-Director of the HTC\, will describe the varied experiences and complex needs of survivors of human trafficking. In describing the work\, Professor Campbell will debunk pervasive and harmful myths about trafficking. Professor Campbell will be joined by a student attorney from the clinic. The student attorney will shed light on how working directly with survivors of exploitation has impacted the development of their professional identity.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:In the last twenty years\, the phrase \"talent management\" has increased dramatically in organizations and management literature. Despite its prevalence\, little research has looked at potential consequences of referring to employees and their abilities as \"talent.\" \n\nJoin us for a conversation with Angela Duckworth and Daniel Southwick\, hosted by Kim Cameron\, to learn how organizational language can impact employee grit. They will discuss their recent research showing that describing ability as a talent (as opposed to a skill) is linked to pessimistic attitudes about improvement and persistence and may lead human resource managers to invest fewer resources in employee development. In this session you will learn what leaders can say and do to unleash grit in the workplace.\n\nAngela Duckworth is the founder and CEO of Character Lab\, whose mission is to advance scientific insights that help children thrive. She is also the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor at the University of Pennsylvania\, faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change For Good Initiative\, and faculty co-director of Wharton People Analytics. Previously\, Angela founded a summer school for underserved children that was profiled as a Harvard Kennedy School case study and\, in 2018\, celebrated its 25th anniversary. She has also been a McKinsey management consultant and a public school math and science teacher. Her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance is a #1 New York Times best seller. She is also co-host\, with Stephen Dubner\, of the podcast No Stupid Questions. \n\nDaniel Southwick is a doctoral student\, studying under Dr. Angela Duckworth\, in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on practice\, expertise\, and people's perceptions of talent. He is particularly interested in understanding the mindsets that facilitate optimal learning. He has a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of California at Irvine.\n\nHost: Kim Cameron\, co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations\; William Russell Kelly Professor Emeritus of Business Administration\; Professor Emeritus of Higher Education \n\nSeries Sponsors: The Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Beastly Badges: the art of adaptive political cultures in nomadic regimes\"
DESCRIPTION:Summary: Nomadic polities are conventionally treated as loose and fragile regimes\, adept at far-reaching conquests yet inept at managing the resulting large realms or extensive constituencies. In order to provide a more constructive and robust narrative of nomadic regimes\, this talk elucidates strategies of political culture developed by the Xiongnu Empire of Inner Asia (ca. 200 bce- 100 ce)\, as manifested in the array of belt ornaments that served as badges of personal prestige and emblems of political participation in the steppe empire. Just as adaptations of long-standing traditions of steppe art in the early era served to bolster claims of legitimacy over the entirety of Inner Asia\, so did significant alterations that emphasized exotic components allow the imperial nomads of the later era to adapt their political culture not only in response to challenges of interior politics but also to capitalize on the expanding resources of cross-continental exchanges via the Silk Roads.\n\nAbout: Bryan Miller is a Lecturer in the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan. He specializes in the archaeology of empires in East Asia\, with particular focus on nomadic regimes of Inner Asia. His research includes investigations of hybrid art and practices in the course of culture contact\, as well as the interface between local elites and ruling factions\, and he is currently completing a book on the Xiongnu nomadic empire.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cognitive Science Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Linguistics graduate student Justin Craft will present \"Linguistic and Social Expectation Beyond The Gender Binary\,\" coauthored by Justin T. Craft\, Ian Calloway\, and Dominique A. Bouavichith.\n\nABSTRACT\nPrevious research has demonstrated social information affects listeners’ linguistic decision-making. Strand and Johnson (1996) showed that imputed gender shifts listeners’ sibilant category boundaries. Further research has shown sibilant identity influences listeners’ binary categorization of gender\, suggesting social-linguistic bidirectionality (Bouavichith et al.\, 2019). This study extends this body of literature by investigating how sibilant categorization changes when acoustically masculinized speech is framed within differing social contexts.\nParticipants completed a lexical decision task\, where each word consisted of a synthesized sibilant onset and a naturalistic rime. In Block 1\, rimes were minimally manipulated\; listeners were told the speaker identified as female during the recording. In Block 2\, rimes were masculinized\; this manipulation was contextualized in Condition 1 as the speaker’s gender transition and in Condition 2 as digital manipulation.\nIf sensitive to the use of phonetic variation to convey social meaning\, Condition 1 listeners would be more likely than Condition 2 listeners to adopt a categorization strategy in Block 2 consistent with hearing a male-sounding voice (i.e.\, more likely to categorize ambiguous sibilants as /s/). As expected\, Condition 1 participants were more likely to categorize a sibilant as /s/ in Block 2\, while Condition 2 participants did not differ across blocks.\n\nPlease visit the Cognitive Science Seminar Series website for Zoom access information.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | The Pursuit of Neutrino CP Violation With the T2K Experiment:\nChallenges and Prospects
DESCRIPTION:Please contact Beth Demkowski\, demkowsk@umich.edu for Zoom link.\n\nAfter a decade of operation\, the T2K Collaboration published in 2020 in Nature very exciting results showing the strongest constraint yet on the parameter that governs the breaking of the symmetry between matter and antimatter using neutrino oscillations. T2K has studied how beams of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos transition into electron neutrinos and electron antineutrinos\, respectively. The parameter governing the matter/antimatter symmetry breaking in neutrino oscillation\, called δcp phase\, can take a value from -180º to 180º. For the first time\, T2K has disfavoured almost half of the possible values at the 99.7% confidence level. This outstanding result is starting to reveal a basic property of neutrinos that have not been measured until now. This is an important step on the way to knowing whether or not neutrinos and antineutrinos behave differently. In the quest of CP violation there are many challenges that compromise the performance of the T2K experiment. I will discuss the challenges and describe the possible solutions selected by the experiment to overcome these limitations.\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:MIDAS Seminar Series and ICPSR Co-present: Misty Heggeness\, Research Economist\, US Census Bureau
DESCRIPTION:I examine the impact of the COVID-19 shock on parents’ labor supply during the initial stages of the pandemic. Using difference-in-difference estimation and monthly panel data from the Current Population Survey (CPS)\, I compare labor market attachment\, non-work activity\, hours worked\, and earnings and wages of those in areas with early school closures and stay-in-place orders with those in areas with delayed or no pandemic closures. While there was no immediate impact on detachment or unemployment\, mothers with jobs in early closure states were 68.8 percent more likely than mothers in late closure states to have a job but not be working as a result of early shutdowns. There was no effect on working fathers or working women without school age children. Mothers who continued working increased their work hours relative to comparable fathers\; this effect\, however\, appears entirely driven by a reduction in fathers’ hours worked. Overall\, the pandemic appears to have induced a unique immediate juggling act for working parents of school age children. Mothers took a week of leave from formal work\; fathers working fulltime\, for example\, reduced their hours worked by 0.53 hours over the week. While experiences were different for mothers and fathers\, each are vulnerable to scarring and stunted opportunities for career growth and advancement due to the pandemic.\n\nMisty Heggeness is Principal Economist and Senior Advisor for Evaluations and Experiments at the U.S. Census Bureau. Dr. Heggeness has a PhD from the University of Minnesota. She has worked as a research economist in the U.S. federal government since 2010 and also held positions at the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Labor. She teaches a course on policy analysis and evaluation at the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on survey response quality\, poverty & inequality\, gender\, and the high skilled workforce and has appeared in outlets like The New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, The Economist\, Nature\, and Science. At the Census Bureau\, she leads a high-profile initiative to integrate the Census Bureau’s major frames and co-leads a 2020 administrative records census project.
