SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Human Dispersal(s) from Africa
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed.\n\nProfessor Kingston will review the evidence for migratory events of early hominins out of Africa as they spread out into the Old World\, presumably in response to changing climatic conditions and possibly demographic pressures in this fifth lecture of the six part “Advances in Science” lecture series. Dr. Kingston will examine environmental proxies potentially linked to these dispersal events and genetic evidence for the timing and nature of movement of early hominins.\n\nProfessor Kingston is a Biological Anthropologist interested in reconstructing the environmental context of various stages of human evolution. He conducts field research primarily in Africa at various fossil sites\, ranging from localities that have yielded remains of apes predating the origin of the human lineage\, sites from which fossil humans (hominins) have been recovered\, and more recent archeological localities. He is especially interested in identifying factors that drove or mediated evolutionary innovations in our lineage. In this research\, he utilizes biogeochemical approaches to reconstruct dietary ecology\, climatic conditions\, and vegetational structure. \n\nThis is the fifth of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Advances in Science. The next lecture will be on February 18\, 2021. The title is Welcome to the Anthropocene. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:“Our Father”: The Medieval Abrahamic Religion(s)
DESCRIPTION:In contemporary parlance\, the term “Abrahamic religions” serves to indicate the common ground of Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. The designation of these three religions as “Abrahamic” is used as a shorthand for their supposed common ancestry as well as for their assumed shared religious principles and values. Since its very purpose is to highlight the commonality of the three religions\, the term is always used in the plural. \nFor medieval thinkers in the Islamicate world\, however\, the Abrahamic model of religion was radically different from the contemporary one. This lecture will try to show\, they referred to Abraham either in order to highlight the exclusive veracity of one specific religion\, or\, at times\, to transcend all conventional religiosity. \n\nAdvanced Registration Required: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/1816105512605/WN_hjo-P71UROGJ4_Opr1n6gA

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Lecture Series | Intimate Disconnections: Divorce and the Romance of Independence in Contemporary Japan
DESCRIPTION:What makes a good marriage? How should men and women feel confident deciding which relationships should end? In the early 2000s\, amidst demographic and social changes\, divorce in Japan rapidly became a newly visible and viable option. At individual\, familial\, and national levels\, in the early 2000s divorce prompted serious conversations about the value of relationships\, and the risks and security they bring to the people involved in them. Based on ethnographic work with men and women\, and told through deeply personal narratives\, Intimate Disconnections describes both the legal process and social transitions surrounding divorce\, providing a complex portrait of people balancing the risks and possibilities of intimate relationships in an era when divorce is ever more common.\n\nAllison Alexy is an assistant professor in the Departments of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and Women’s and Gender Studies\, at the University of Michigan. A cultural anthropologist focusing on intimacy and family conflicts in contemporary Japan\, she has co-edited Home and Family in Japan: Continuity and Transformation (Routledge 2011) and Intimate Japan: Ethnographies of Closeness and Conflict (Hawai’i 2019).\n \n Discussant: Ilana Gershon\, Ruth N. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Divided Bodies: Lyme Disease\, Contested Illness\, and Evidence-Based Medicine
DESCRIPTION:While many doctors claim that Lyme disease—a tick-borne bacterial infection—is easily diagnosed and treated\, other doctors and the patients they care for argue that it can persist beyond standard antibiotic treatment in the form of chronic Lyme disease. In Divided Bodies\, Abigail A. Dumes offers an ethnographic exploration of the Lyme disease controversy that sheds light on the relationship between contested illness and evidence-based medicine in the United States. Drawing on fieldwork among Lyme patients\, doctors\, and scientists\, Dumes formulates the notion of divided bodies: she argues that contested illnesses are disorders characterized by the division of bodies of thought in which the patient's experience is often in conflict with how it is perceived. Dumes also shows how evidence-based medicine has paradoxically amplified differences in practice and opinion by providing a platform of legitimacy on which interested parties—patients\, doctors\, scientists\, politicians—can make claims to medical truth.\n\nThis event is part of IRWG's Gender: New Works\, New Questions series\, which spotlights recent publications by U-M faculty members and allows for deeper discussion by an interdisciplinary panel.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Supersymmetry and Computation
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss various aspects of the interplay between supersymmetry and the theory of classical and quantum computation. I will first introduce basic elements of computational complexity theory and show that the Witten index problem is #P-complete and thus intractable. I will then discuss the role of supersymmetry in defining a special subclass of quantum algorithms and describe the \"quantum Witten machine\,\" a quantum algorithm for the generalized Witten index.

Please join us!\n\nThis is a Zoom virtual event.\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96762177345?pwd=WDduMDJiL1IzMitiemY4VnBwcmtnQT09\nMeeting ID: 967 6217 7345\nPasscode: 513676\n\n\"Non-Thermal Plasma Air Sterilization: Recent Experimental Validation\, Identified Challenges\, and Comparisons to Conventional Air Treatment Technologies\"\n\nAbstract: \nIncreasing recognition of the transmissibility of the SARS-CoV-2 virus between humans as airborne aerosols\, and the limited options for respiratory protection against such transmission\, have drawn attention to air purification products\, with their relative advantages and disadvantages being closely considered. This presentation reviews recent experimental achievements in developing non-thermal plasmas (NTPs) to potentially displace HEPA filtration and ultraviolet irradiation for rapid inactivation of airborne viruses in ventilation air. Studies considering both viral surrogates and actual viral pathogens known to cause animal disease are discussed. Unique challenges faced in conducting airborne virus inactivation studies are described along with solutions developed. Finally\, performance comparisons between NTP air sterilization and the established technologies of UV irradiation and particle filtration are presented\, demonstrating the substantial promise posed by NTP-based approaches.\n\nBio: \nHerek Clack is an associate professor of civil & environmental engineering at the University of Michigan. At U-M\, his group focuses on chemical and biological aerosols and their interactions with electric fields and electrical discharges. He has served on numerous National Research Council committees addressing environmental issues ranging from the implications of changes to the regulations governing power plant emissions to the safe and ethical thermal destruction of both conventional munitions and chemical warfare agents by the U.S. military. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How to Go Beyond Diversity and Achieve Equity and Inclusion in Academia
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here to receive Zoom link: cew.umich.edu/events/cewinspire-workshop-how-to-go-beyond-diversity-and-achieve-equity-and-inclusion-in-academia\n\nThe main objective of this workshop is for participants (faculty\, students\, administration\, and staff) to develop a personal connection with the plight of racial-ethnic and sexual minorities in institutions of higher education. This work is needed for the advancement of individual and institutional empathy so that we can move from tolerating to accepting to celebrating underrepresented minorities in academia. This will be achieved by encouraging workshop participants to identify instances: in their own lives in which structural prejudice and bigotry and individual-level macroaggressions hampered their career development\; in which they intentionally and/or unintentionally contributed to advancing structural prejudice and bigotry and/or perpetrated individual-level macroaggressions that may have hampered the career of underrepresented faculty\, students\, administration\, and staff\; and in which they were bystanders who did not intervene to dismantle structural prejudice and bigotry and/or address individual-level macroaggressions that they witnessed.\n\nFormat: This hands-on workshop will include:\nA. A short lecture whose content will include Pinto’s personal experiences and personal examples of the dynamics listed above. This will be reinforced with statistics (e.g.\, disparities in tenure and promotion)\, and anecdotes from other minority individuals.\n\nB. Following the lecture\, Pinto\, in collaboration with other actors\, will use Theater of the Oppressed (Port: Teatro dos Oprimidos) techniques to model skits reflecting each of the instances listed above. Skits will be scripted such that the ending of each story will be decided by participants in small groups with an eye toward actions they can take to improve diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in the academic space. (Boal A. (1979). Theatre of the Oppressed. New York\, NY: Theater Communications Group).\n\nC. Following small group discussions\, all participants will reconvene to discuss strategies for welcoming underrepresented minorities into their social networks. This portion of the workshop will help participants to understand how they can help underrepresented minorities develop social capital by lending their social support: emotional\, concrete\, and informational.\n\nRogério Pinto accepting on behalf of the Faculty Allies for Diversity Committee: Born in Belo Horizonte\, Brazil\, Rogério M. Pinto is a professor and associate dean for research at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. He is the co-chair of the Faculty Allies for Diversity Committee. In his work\, Pinto focuses on finding academic\, sociopolitical\, and cultural venues for broadcasting voices of oppressed individuals and groups. Funded by the National Institute of Mental Health\, his community-engaged research focuses on the impact of interprofessional collaboration on the delivery of evidence-based services to marginalized racial/ethnic and sexual minority individuals. Funded by the University of Michigan Office of Research\, as a new scholarly pursuit\, he is building an art installation\, The Realm of the Dead\, to investigate his own personal marginalization as a gender non-confirming\, mixed-race\, and Latinx immigrant. This installation will serve as the stage set for Pinto’s award-winning theatrical performance\, Marília\, a one-person play\, in which Pinto further explores the tragic death of his 3-year old sister\, Marília\, and how such loss haunts and inspires the lives of the family members she left behind. Marília won the 2015 United Solo Festival Best Documentary Script and it will be performed again at the University of Michigan as part of the centennial celebration of the School of Social Work.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME 500 Seminar: Gloria Kim
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract:\n\nThe major problems in the current therapy for oncologic diseases include its inability to selectively target specific tumor cells in the surrounding tissues that make it hard for the drugs and treatment to reach the tumor cells. Despite the significant progress in the discovery of surface markers\, targeting ligands\, and biomaterial carriers\, very few nanoparticle drugs are truly tumor-specific after intravenous injection and their targeting is still not fully reliable\, which results in a wide distribution of nanoparticles throughout the body and increases the chance of adverse side effects. To overcome such limitations\, my graduate research implemented immune cells as living targeting and delivery vehicles that deliver therapeutic biodegradable photoluminescent polymer (BPLP)-based nanoparticles to two tumor models\, melanoma and glioblastoma. This system takes advantage of the inherent targeting and penetrating capabilities of immune cells into the tumor target and the fluorescent properties of BPLP nanoparticles for in vivo imaging. Our platform technology allows assembling various types of nanoparticles\, drugs\, imaging agents\, and immune cells as a treatment for different diseases in the future. The second part of the seminar introduces how the immune cells can also be genetically engineered for cancer immunotherapy in vivo. Even with huge success in the development of CD19-targeting chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells for B-cell hematological malignancies\, we still face major challenges in expanding adoptive cell transfer for solid tumors. To expand this adoptive cell therapy\, finding the right targets for solid tumors that are tumor- and tumor microenvironment-specific is the foremost important step. During my postdoctoral work\, we have found an epitope within the collagen alpha-3(VI) (COL6A3) gene\, which can be used as a biomarker to target stromal cells associated with multiple solid tumors. COL6A3-specific TCRs were isolated and one of these TCRs was affinity enhanced so that the T cells expressing TCR variants that preserved COL6A3 specificity and endowed both CD4 and CD8 T cells with augmented effector functions were able to specifically eliminate tumors in vivo that expressed similar amount of peptide-human leukocyte antigen (pHLA) as primary tumor specimens with favorable safety profile with no detectable off-target reactivity. These preclinical findings serve as the basis and rationale to initiate clinical trials using COL6A3-specific TCRs to target an array of solid tumors. As a principal investigator\, my lab will first focus on merging immunology\, synthetic biology\, genetic engineering\, material science\, and biomedical engineering to develop and evaluate the next generation T cell-based therapies that target and kill solid tumors with enhanced specificity\, reduced toxicity\, and the ability to overcome tumor-associated immunosuppression.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Traffic In Near-Earth Space: A Wicked Problem Of A Complex System Requiring A Transdisciplinary Solution
DESCRIPTION:Moriba Jah \nAssociate Professor\nThe University of Texas at Austin \nAerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department\n\nThe space domain is what you get when you mix a wicked problem with a complex system\, whose behavior is difficult to model and predict due to unknown dependencies\, non-linear causal relationships\, incomplete and even contradictory knowledge\, competing opinions\, and other types of interactions amongst the participants and constituents of the domain. \n \nGiven the vast and deep developments of each scientific field\, coupled with globalization and competing interests\, problems related to the space domain are finding themselves unsolvable through unidisciplinary or even multidisciplinary efforts because the space domain represents a complex system where the measured aspects of it are not explained by simply aggregating the behaviors of individual participants and constituents. The emergent behavior is more than the individual sum of its parts. Solving wicked problems in a complex system requires transdisciplinary\, which is a fused or holistic solution from the melange of multiple disciplines concurrently. You’ll recognize a transdisciplinary solution when it is difficult if not impossible to identify the unique contribution of any specific discipline to the solution. \n \nWe have developed ASTRIAGraph as an initial transdisciplinary solution to this space traffic problem. We describe this development in terms of a digital twin and library making the best of sound data engineering\, science\, and analytics\, with real world examples.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nMoriba Jah is an Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin where he is the holder of the Mrs. Pearlie Dashiell Henderson Centennial Fellowship in Engineering. He’s the director for Computational Astronautical Sciences and Technologies (CAST)\, a group within the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences as well as the Lead for the Space Security and Safety Program at the Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law. Moriba came to UT Austin by way of the Air Force Research Laboratory and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory prior to that\, where he was a Spacecraft Navigator on a handful of Mars missions.\n\n Moriba is a Fellow of multiple organizations: TED\, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)\, American Astronautical Society (AAS)\, International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS)\, Royal Astronomical Society (RAS)\, and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). He has served on the US delegation to the United Nations Committee On Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN-COPUOS)\, is an elected Academician of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA)\, and has testified to congress on his work as related to Space Situational Awareness and Space Traffic Management. He’s an Associate Editor of the Elsevier Advances in Space Research journal\, and serves on multiple committees: IAA Space Debris\, AIAA Astrodynamics\, IAF Astrodynamics\, and IAF Space Security.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Saibal De: Tensor Methods for Data Compression
DESCRIPTION:Bio: Saibal De is a 5th year PhD candidate in Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics. His research involves using high-performance computing and novel algorithms for accelerating physics-based simulation frameworks\, and developing faithful reduced-order models of black-box high-fidelity simulations.\n\nAbstract: With the advancement of computing software and hardware\, physics-based simulations have gained notoriety in many scientific and industrial applications due to their highly accurate prediction capabilities. However\, in addition to being computationally expensive\, even a single of these high-fidelity simulations produce massive amounts of data. Storing and processing all these data thus requires novel approaches. In this talk\, I will present how we can use tensor factorization methods for compressing scientific data\, leading to dramatic savings in disk-space usage. Towards the end of the talk\, I’ll also touch upon how we can potentially construct reduced-order models out of these compressed datasets.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reading and Q&A with Marcelo Hernandez Castillo
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nMarcelo Hernandez Castillo is a poet\, essayist\, translator\, and immigration advocate. He is the author of *Cenzontle* (BOA editions\, 2018)\, chosen by Brenda Shaughnessy as the winner of the 2017 A. Poulin Jr. prize and winner of the 2018 Northern California Book Award. *Cenzontle* maps a parallel between the landscape of the border and the landscape of sexuality through surreal and deeply imagistic poems. Castillo’s first chapbook\, *Dulce* (Northwestern University Press\, 2018)\, was chosen by Chris Abani\, Ed Roberson\, and Matthew Shenoda as the winner of the Drinking Gourd Poetry Prize. His memoir *Children of the Land* (Harper Collins\, 2020) is his most recent publication and explores the ideas of separation from deportation\, trauma\, and mobility between borders.\n\nCastillo was born in Zacatecas\, Mexico and immigrated at the age of five with his family to the California central valley. As an AB540 student\, he earned his B.A. from Sacramento State University and was the first undocumented student to graduate from the Helen Zell Writers Program at the University of Michigan. His immigration case was used by the Supreme Court to justify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) under president Obama. Castillo is a founding member of the Undocupoets campaign which successfully eliminated citizenship requirements from all major first poetry book prizes in the country and was recognized with the Barnes and Noble “Writers for Writers” award from Poets &Writers Magazine. Through a literary partnership with Amazon Publishing he has helped to establish The Undocupoet Fellowship which provides funding to help curb the cost of submissions to journals and contests.\n\nHe is the translator of the Argentinian modernist poet\, Jacobo Fijman and is currently at work translating the poems of the contemporary Mexican Peruvian poet Yaxkin Melchy whose poems combine digital\, environmental\, and indigenous studies into a cosmopolitan melée specific to Mexico City. Castillo also co-translated the work of the Mexican poet Marcelo Uribe with C.D. Wright before her untimely passing.\n\nCastillo’s work has been adopted to Opera through collaboration with the composer Reinaldo Moya and his work has appeared or been featured in The New York Times\, PBS Newshour\, People Magazine en Español\, The Paris Review\, Fusion TV\, Buzzfeed\, Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts\, New England Review\, and Indiana Review\, among others. He currently teaches in the Low-Res MFA program at Ashland University. He lives in Marysville\, California\, with his wife and son.\n\n\nThe Zell Visiting Writers Series brings outstanding writers to campus each semester. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (BA ’64\, LLDHon ’13). For more information\, please visit the Zell Visiting Writers Program webpage: https://lsa.umich.edu/writers\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. Copies of the readings and live\, high quality auto-captions/transcriptions will be provided at all events.
