SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Alex Bouchard-Côté\, Associate Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of British Columbia
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In the first part of the talk\, I will present an adaptive\, non-reversible Parallel Tempering (PT) allowing MCMC exploration of challenging problems such as single cell phylogenetic trees. A sharp divide emerges in the behaviour and performance of reversible versus non-reversible PT schemes: the performance of the former eventually collapses as the number of parallel cores used increases whereas non-reversible benefits from arbitrarily many available parallel cores. These theoretical results are exploited to develop an adaptive scheme to efficiently optimize over annealing schedules.\n\nIn the second half\, I will talk about the global communication barrier\, a fundamental limit shared by both reversible and non-reversible PT methods\, and on our recent work that leverage non-linear annealing paths to provably and practically break that barrier.\n\nMy group is also interested in making these advanced non-reversible Monte Carlo methods easily available to data scientists. To do so\, we have designed a Bayesian modelling language to perform inference over arbitrary data types using non-reversible\, highly parallel algorithms.\n\nReferences:\n\n- Non-Reversible Parallel Tempering: a Scalable Highly Parallel MCMC Scheme.\n Saifuddin Syed\, Alexandre Bouchard-Côté\, George Deligiannidis\, Arnaud Doucet.\n https://arxiv.org/pdf/1905.02939.pdf\n- Software: https://www.stat.ubc.ca/~bouchard/blang/\n\nhttps://www.stat.ubc.ca/~bouchard/\n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed via Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/94350208889\nThere will be a virtual reception to follow

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Chytrid fungi and the functional specification of actin networks
DESCRIPTION:Hosts: Laura Buttitta & Tim James\n\nAbstract: Eukaryotic cells often use their actin cytoskeleton for multiple functions at the same time. For example\, the actin networks of human epithelial cells can *simultaneously* control cell migration\, endocytosis\, vesicular trafficking\, cell polarity\, and other actin functions important for human health. Despite having distinct functions\, individual actin networks share structural components and regulators\, including polymerization factors\, polymer bundlers\, and proteins that promote network turnover. Determining how cells control different subsets of actin functions\, and how these functions change over time\, are difficult questions to address given the large amount of molecular overlap and spatial proximity between functionally distinct actin networks in animal cells. Budding and fission yeasts—the other most commonly-used model systems to study actin—have spatially separated actin networks\, a property that has made them powerful for determining precise molecular mechanisms underlying actin-dependent functions like endocytosis. Yeast\, however\, have lost important actin structures including an actin cortex and protrusions used for cell motility. Yeasts are also missing many important regulators of human actin networks\, making it difficult to determine to what extent the rules of actin network specification of yeast can be applied to animal cells. To bridge this gap\, my lab uses chytrid fungi as a system to study the functional specification of animal-like and yeast-like actin networks because: (a) chytrids are early-branching fungi and have retained actin regulators found in human cells that have been lost by yeast and other fungi as well as fungal-specific actin network components (1)\, and (b) chytrids undergo natural developmental transitions between motile\, animal-like cell types with an actin cortex and sessile\, yeast-like cell types with cell walls and physically separated actin networks. In this seminar\, I will explain how we came to study these fascinating fungi and how we are now using chytrid fungi as a system to study the functional specification of animal-like and yeast-like actin networks and the developmental transitions between them.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Film-screening of *Ghost Tape #10* followed by a Q&A with the Director
DESCRIPTION:At this CSEAS Lecture Series\, we will screen the film \"Ghost Tape #10\,\" which will follow with a Q&A with the Director Sean David Christensen.\n\nFree and open to the public. Please register at http://bit.ly/38nadB7\n \nFilm Synopsis:\n \nCreated by the U.S. Army during the American War in Viet Nam\, *Ghost Tape #10* was one of many audiotapes engineered to psychologically intimidate and demoralize the North Vietnamese Army through its depiction of the Buddhist afterlife. By re-examining this weaponization of religious belief\, reflections on this artifact of American propaganda lead to meditations on relationships between the living and the dead\, asking what truths\, if any\, still echo within this recording.\n \nFilm Director Bio:\n \nSean David Christensen (b. 1985) is a visual artist who works in music & film. His work has been featured at the Hammer Museum\, San Francisco International Film Festival\, Austin Film Festival & Pictoplasma Berlin. His films have screened at the Angelika Film Center\, Phoenix Art Museum & the Musée des beaux-arts in Montréal. His artwork has been presented on Rolling Stone\, and his experimental documentary *The Duel*\, based on a true story by actress Lili Taylor\, was named a Vimeo Staff Pick in 2018. Amy R. Handler of Moving Pictures has described his filmmaking as\, “Brilliant...fragile & hypnotic\,” and Sundance Award-winning director Jay Rosenblatt has described Christensen's short films as\, “Evocative...they do what many short films fail to do\, make you wish they were longer.” Christensen is a graduate of the Center for Visual Anthropology at the University of Southern California and lives & works in Los Angeles.\n\nFilm website: https://filmfreeway.com/GhostTape10\n\n\n*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. One strategy in pre-modern Peru was mortuary practice\, a means of expressing relationships among the living and the dead. To what extent and for what purpose did indigenous groups transform mortuary practices during periods of conquest? Who were the dead? To address these questions\, I employ an approach that integrates archaeological data\, ancient DNA (aDNA)\, and other lines of evidence to examine two distinct grave types—chullpas (above-ground and subterranean mausolea) and subterranean cists— in the Chincha Valley of the Peruvian south coast. These graves date to the Late Intermediate Period (1000 – 1400 CE)\, Late Horizon (1400 – 1532 CE)\, and the Colonial Period (1532 – 1825 CE). Results demonstrate that indigenous peoples sustained\, abandoned\, and created entirely new mortuary practices under Inca and Spanish rule. Genome-wide data from six individuals in two cemeteries coincide with ceramic\, textile\, isotopic\, and sixteenth-century documents to suggest that the Inca moved individuals from the Peruvian north coast to the Chincha Valley. This research widens the scope of imperialism studies to include a mortuary perspective on the dynamics between empires and indigenous peoples and provides evidence of state-sponsored resettlement in the Andes.\n\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92733557951

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How We Do\, a discussion & workshop with artist Chitra Ganesh
DESCRIPTION:ere.\n \nChitra Ganesh\, a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist of South Asian origin\, creates installations\, comics\, animation\, sculpture\, and mixed media works on paper. Her process often engages historical and mythic texts as inspiration and points of departure to create new representations of culture\, femininity\, sexuality\, and power\, and to bring queer femme perspectives typically absent from canons of literature and art. \n \nHow does Ganesh employ research to approach these large ideas\, identities\, and histories in her research and creative process? Join this discussion + workshop to learn directly from Ganesh about her artistic practice\, and to apply a little of her approach to your own creative projects (whether they be artistic\, conceptual\, entrepreneurial\, or otherwise). Browse her website and Instagram.\n \nDuring the workshop\n \nParticipants are invited to think of something that inspires them and/or they have questions about:\n \n- a film - a book\, poem\, comic or graphic novel\, or other form of writing - a common historical narrative - a person (past or present) - something from Tik Tok - a meme - a video\n \nThrough discussion\, writing\, doodling\, drawing\, and other exercises\, this workshop will offer the space to explore and expand the ways in which creative projects can offer critiques of society\, ideas about history and identity\, and new imaginings of what is possible.\n \nSultana’s Dream and recent work\n \nRecently acquired by UMMA and featured in the upcoming exhibition Oh honey...A queer reading of the collection\, Ganesh’s series of prints Sultana’s Dream takes its inspiration from a 1905 text by the same name written by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain\, a trailblazer for women's rights in South Asia. In Ganesh's words\, Sultana’s Dream is a moving blueprint for an urban utopia that centers concepts such as collective knowledge production\, fair governance\, radical farming\, scientific inquiry\, safe space for refugees\, and a work-life balance that includes down time and dreaming\, all with women--as thinkers\, leaders\, rebels\, and visionaries--at the helm. A video installation titled How We Do accompanied two exhibitions of Sultana’s Dream in New York and Bangladesh. In the installation\, Ganesh mixed how-to videos and media reports found online with clips she solicited from friends and members of her broader queer and trans communities\, seeking to build a body of collective knowledge and skill-sharing techniques\, which she proposes are an essential aspect of an equitable future.\n \nIn her most recent work\, A city will tell you her secrets if you ask\, this year’s QUEERPOWER public art installation at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Art in NYC\, Ganesh celebrates queer\, trans\, and BIPOC histories of downtown Manhattan while commemorating the deaths of trans people murdered in 2020 and LGBTQ activists lost to COVID. \n \nRelated events\n \nChitra Ganesh: On Utopia and Dissent. Friday\, March 12\, 8 p.m.  presented by UMMA and the Penny Stamps Speaker Series\n\nChitra Ganesh programs are organized in partnership with the Penny Stamps Speaker Series and the Spectrum Center in conjunction with the upcoming UMMA exhibition Oh honey...a queer reading of the collection. \n\nStudent programming at UMMA is generously supported by the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program\, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Methods Hour: Interrater Reliability: The limitations of Cohen's kappa in classroom observation research
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nCohen's kappa is the coefficient commonly reported (and requested by reviewers) as measure of the consistency of two and more raters. Usually\, the objects to be rated are clearly defined or given. Our study design was more complex: Two raters identified misbehaviors in classroom video and classified them according to a coding scheme. How to measure/report interrater reliability? Is it ok to base Cohen's kappa (or Krippendorff's alpha) only on those roughly 20% of misbehaviors that both raters identified and coded? Are there alternative approaches for future studies?

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:AE200 Seminar Series\, Stealth...An Airplane Design Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Grant Carichner\nAdjunct Professor\nCal Poly Pomona\n\nIn any combat scenario it is advantageous to be invisible or nearly invisible to your adversary (recall Desert Storm/bombing of Baghdad in 1991). In any situation it is very important to limit your opponent’s ability to harm you. More than 50 years ago initial stealth efforts focused on incorporating materials into an airplane’s design to reduce radar signatures. This proved to be a difficult and elusive goal. Today ‘stealth’ is designed into virtually every military vehicle.\n\nThis seminar will review the history of early stealth efforts and conclude with where the state-of-the-art is today. Air vehicles will be the main focus but it will also become clear that stealth is being added to the designs of land and sea vehicles as well. In this discussion reducing the ‘signature’ of an air vehicle to radar will be the primary focus. However\, it should be recognized that IR (infrared)\, audible\, and visual signatures can also be very important. They will be introduced with little discussion.\n\nUltimately\, the goal is to have a vehicle survive and be able to fly tomorrow’s missions or successfully penetrate enemy positions to destroy its target. Stealth is a major component of survivability but it is not the only one.\n\nWhat was the first stealth airplane? You may be surprised to learn the answer.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nMr. Carichner went to work for the Lockheed Skunk Works after earning his BS Engr and MS Engr degrees from UCLA. He retired in 2013 after 48 years at the Skunk Works where he worked on most of the company’s high-profile programs. During his career he started out as an aerodynamicist and eventually became Head of Aerodynamics for the Skunk Works. Future program assignments were either Chief Engineer or Program Manager positions. As Chief Engineer for the JASSM Program he was selected as Lockheed’s Inventor of the Year.\n\nThe last 15 years of his career were dedicated to lighter-than-air designs. He created the Aerocraft Program whose design resulted in a hybrid airship demonstrator that had many airplane flight characteristics that has changed the course of future airship design.\n \nCurrently\, Mr. Carichner teaches Airplane Design at Cal Poly Pomona.\n\nMr. Carichner has written two textbooks. One on airplane design and another on airship design. Both books are published by the AIAA\n Fundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design: Volume I - Aircraft Design\n Fundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design: Volume II - Airship Design and \n Case Studies

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: Binding again: Does it help or hurt?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWorking memory and episodic memory processes both decline with age. Correlational evidence suggests reduced working and age-related episodic memory difficulties are closely related. However\, Bartsch\, Loaiza & Oberauer (2019) recently failed to find that reduced working memory causes older adults’ EM impairment. The study used a three-alternative forced-choice recognition task to test memory for word-pairs immediately after encoding\, tapping working memory processes\, and then again later in the task\, ultimately tapping episodic memory processes. Interestingly\, probing the contents of working memory in this manner may have negatively affected subsequent episodic memory for the same word-pairs. Alternatively\, testing working memory may serve as an opportunity for retrieval practice that will improve episodic memory. The current project investigates the conditions in which testing working memory will be beneficial and when it will reveal memory vulnerability and explores whether the effects of testing working memory on episodic memory depends on individual differences in working memory capacity.

It explores themes of alternative histories\, archives\, Black identity\, collective memory\, storytelling\; meshing performance and performativity\, and the interplay of the oral and aural in one’s experience of the world. An undercurrent of movement explored in multiple variations thread the works together\, realized through a variety of methods including painterly gesture\, repetitive mark-making\, performance with an audience or without\, spoken word\, ambient sound\, and reimagined instruments. The exhibition aspires to pull at the loosened threads of a social fabric in crisis\, revealing larger complex histories and art discourses\, nationally and internationally\, framed through the experiences and trajectories of Stamps alumni during their time in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication that will include interviews with each of the alumni artists conducted by current Stamps’ student and exhibition co-curator Moteniola Ogundipe.\n\nStory\, Word\, Sound\, Sway is co-curated by Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan and Moteniola Ogundipe.\n\n \n\nImage: Levester Williams\, “Shift\, Sift\, Swoosh Bods\,” 2018\, (detail\, video still) HD video\, color\, four audio channels\; 17 minutes 33 seconds (full length).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Molecular Memories of Earth’s Antiquity
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Meeting ID# 986 8692 2782\nEvery cell contains a biochemical record of four billion years of Earth-life coevolution. Our mitochondria were once free-living bacteria. Each unit of the electron transport chain that we use to breathe oxygen was borrowed from older microbial machinery. Aerobic respiration is a medley of pieces of older anaerobic respiratory pathways such as methanogenesis and denitrification. Yet we have barely begun to chart the vast landscape of myriad microbial metabolisms. In this talk\, I will describe how dissecting the molecular machines of modern microbes can give us glimpses of the early Earth environments that supported life’s first breaths.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Materiality of *Kunshan qiang:* The Emergence of a “Refined” *(Ya)* Singing Style of *Chuanqi* in Late Ming China
DESCRIPTION:*Chuanqi* is a dramatic genre comprising dialogue and arias that was prevalent in late Ming and early Qing China. Sheng's work investigates the interface between page and performance to explore the relations among literary texts\, musical sound\, and staging practices embedded in the genre\, thereby decentering the hegemony of text in the study of *chuanqi.*\n\nFor this talk\, Sheng will focus on *Kunshan qiang\,* a specific singing style\, and analyze how it became the refined\, orthodox voice of *chuanqi* in early modern China. The discussion will center on a series of material practices paramount to the reform of Kunshan qiang\, including the introduction of melodic instruments\, the construction of a new stylized language for singing through typographical inventions\, and the promotion of bodily techniques of rhythm. Such analyses of material practices cast light on a late Ming ecology of music in which the human body was deployed together with instruments and writing/printing technology as an essential tool for the practice\, reproduction\, and circulation of music.\n\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96135507409

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Lecture Series | Gandhi and the Claims of Indian Modernity
DESCRIPTION:Is there a way to integrate Gandhi’s philosophical and moral ideas with his understanding of British colonialism in the decades long political campaign against it that he led?\n\n Is it possible to find a broadly left-wing reading of Gandhi in his critique of European modernity or is it only possible to find a progressive understanding of Gandhi outside of and despite his anti-modernism?\n\nThese are the two related questions that Akeel Bilgrami will explore in his lecture.\n \nAkeel Bilgrami got a BA in English Literature from Elphinstone College\, Bombay University and went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar\, where he read Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics. He has a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He has held the Johnsonian Professorship of Philosophy and holds the Sidney Morgenbesser Chair of Philosophy at Columbia University\, where he is also a Professor on the Committee on Global Thought. He has been the Director of the Heyman Centre for the Humanities as well as the South Asian Institute at Columbia. He is the Editor of the Journal of Philosophy and also the President of its Board of Trustees. His publications include the books Belief and Meaning (1992)\, Self-Knowledge and Resentment (2006)\, and Secularism\, Identity and Enchantment (2014) and over a hundred articles on topics ranging from the nature of meaning to the relation between religion and society and culture. He is due to publish two books in the near future: What is a Muslim? (Princeton University Press) and Gandhi\, The Philosopher (Columbia University Press). SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Candy Chang: Transforming Our Cities
DESCRIPTION:Through the activation of public spaces around the world\, Taiwanese-American artist Candy Chang creates work that examines the dynamics between society and the psyche\, the threshold between isolation and community\, and the ways shared places can cultivate reflection\, perspective\, and kinship. She is interested in the relationship between public space and mental health\, the tension between individual liberty and social cohesion\, and a city that exposes and fosters the complexity of the individual and collective psyche. With a background in urban planning\, Chang worked with communities in Nairobi\, New York\, Helsinki\, New Orleans\, Vancouver\, and Johannesburg\, where she observed universal challenges of the democratic commons. She created interactive experiments in the public realm to explore more inclusive forms of community dialogue. After struggling with grief and depression\, she channeled her emotional questions into her public work. Thanks to passionate people around the world\, her participatory public art project Before I Die has been created in over 2\,000 cities and over 70 countries\, including China\, Iraq\, Argentina\, Russia\, Haiti\, Kazakhstan\, and South Africa. Her work has been exhibited in the Venice Architecture Biennale\, New Museum\, Tate Modern\, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. She is a recipient of the TED Senior Fellowship\, Tulane University Urban Innovation Fellowship\, Tony Goldman Visionary Artist Award\, and Art Production Fund Artist Residency. She was named one of the Top 100 Leaders in Public Interest Design by Impact Design Hub\, a “Live Your Best Life” Local Hero by Oprah Magazine\, and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. She has been the keynote speaker at events including the Creativity World Forum\, American Planning Association National Conference\, and the Global Health Summit. She received a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University\, as well as a BS in Architecture and a BFA in Graphic Design from the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nThis Speaker Series event is an online premiere of a live event from our archives\, which the artist has graciously granted permission for in light of the ongoing circumstances of isolation. The event took place in 2014 with support from Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, Arts Engine\, and the Institute for the Humanities. Our 2020-2021 Series is brought to you with the support of our streaming partners\, Detroit Public Television and PBS Books.\n\nHow to WatchAll events will be webcast on Fridays at 8pm (ET) at http://pennystampsevents.org and https://dptv.org/pennystamps.
