DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag:  A Developmental Perspective on Friendship and Health
DESCRIPTION:This paper examines the presence and quality of friendship over 25 years. This analysis uses a subsample of the Survey of Social Relations which began in 1992 with a representative sample of Detroit area residents aged 8 to 93 (additional waves in 2005\; 2015).  Using latent class growth analyses\, we identified three patterns of change in the proportion of friends in social networks (moderate and increasing\; low and decreasing\; high and increasing) and two patterns of change in positive friendship quality (high positive and decreasing\; high positive and increasing) and negative friendship quality (low negative and steady\, high negative and steady) over time.  Neither\, higher education and not being married was associated with social networks that in 1992 had the highest proportion of friends\, that increased over time. Neither age nor gender were significantly associate with changing proportions or quality of friendship. Patterns of change in proportion of friends was not associated with self-rated health or depressive symptoms.  However\, results indicate that positive friendship trajectories\, but not negative friendship trajectories\, were associated with better self-rated health. The effects of increasingly positive quality friend relations over time are especially impactful on mental health earlier in the lifespan. People who are younger were more likely to report fewer depressive symptoms two waves later\, if they have increasing friend positive relationship quality. DESCRIPTION:The day after Valentine’s Day\, Dani Vignos\, owner of University Flower Shop\, will offer us a glimpse into her shop and how to create interesting and attractive succulent gardens. Mike Palmer\, a horticulturist at the Matthaei Botancial Gardens\, will talk about the care and propagation of succulents at home.\n\nMike Palmer\, Greenhouse Research Coordinator\, has been with Matthaei Botanical Gardens since 1990\, joining the staff after he received his B.S. in Commercial Horticulture from Purdue University.  At Purdue he focused his studies on woody plants and plant propagation\, with emphasis on botanical nomenclature and public gardens.  At Matthaei\, Mike coordinates research in the greenhouses and is gatekeeper for research projects on the grounds.\n\nUniversity Flower Shop\, established in 1931\, is a floral design studio and shop in Ann Arbor’s historic Nickels Arcade.  Led by owner and designer\, Danielle Vignos\, the shop creates custom floral arrangements and wrapped bouquets for any mood and all occasions.  The flower shop team is always in search of interesting and seasonal ingredients to keep minds inspired and guests intrigued.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. We have established experimental systems in budding yeast\, zebrafish embryos\, and mammalian tissue culture cells to explore transcription and splicing regulation in a variety of biological contexts and with a diversity of tools\, from imaging to genome-wide approaches. Our observations have provided novel insights into transcription and splicing mechanisms as well as principles of cellular organization that facilitate efficient gene expression. In this talk\, I will be discussing rapid co-transcriptional splicing during erythropoiesis and how Cajal bodies assemble to ensure a steady supply of spliceosomal components.

DESCRIPTION:Advances in genetics and genomics have raised new questions in trout restoration and management\, specifically about species identity and purity\, which fish to value\, and where these fish belong. We examine how this molecular turn in fisheries management is influencing wild and native trout policy in Colorado. Examples from two small Colorado watersheds illustrate how framing trout as genetic bodies can guide managers to care for or kill trout populations in the interest of rectifying decades of genetic disruption caused by human activity. The turn to genetic science is prompting new classifications of lineage and taxa\, altering long-standing conservation priorities\, and reorienting the manipulation of biological processes such as reproduction and dispersal. As a result\, other social and ecological factors may be pushed to the margins of management decisions. These changes warrant greater conversation about the consequences of molecular analyses and the values embedded in trout science and conservation more broadly.\n\nDavid Havlick is Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. His research on militarized landscapes\, restoration geographies\, conservation\, and public lands has been supported by the National Science Foundation\, American Geographic Society\, and US Forest Service. He has published in journals including Science\, The Geographical Review\, Environmental Ethics\, Progress in Physical Geography\, Forestry\, and Science\, Technology and Human Values. His book\, Bombs Away: Militarization\, Conservation\, and Ecological Restoration (University of Chicago Press\, 2018)\, won the 2019 JB Jackson Prize from the American Association of Geographers. He is also the author of No Place Distant: Roads and Motorized Recreation on America’s Public Lands (Island Press\, 2002)\; and co-edited (with Marion Hourdequin) Restoring Layered Landscapes: History\, Ecology\, and Culture (Oxford\, 2016).
