SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar | Decolonizing Complexity: Bottom-up Traditions in Computational Futures
DESCRIPTION:Join Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\n\nAbstract: Indigenous cultures around the world developed an extraordinary repertoire of practices that embody many of the goals ultimately sought by complex systems researchers: egalitarian social relations\, circular economies\, ecological sustainability. Working with their modern descendents\, we can develop collaborative practices that bring together “bottom-up” cultural traditions such as African fractals\, Native American biocomplexity and restorative justice with contemporary computing technologies and frameworks.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: 619 Presentation: The effects of social behavior on dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens
DESCRIPTION:Social behavior in rats is a phenomenon that is often studied in rats. Previous studies have found that social housing has an attenuating effect on the motivation to self-administer methamphetamine (METH) in female rats. Interestingly\, females tend to benefit from having a cage mate while male rats do not. In order to understand how social behavior could be attenuating METH-taking behavior\, the quality of the relationships between cage mates is being investigated to look at potential causes of this sex difference. Additionally\, we are looking at dopamine (DA) release changes in the nucleus accumbens during baseline and after METH injections using fast scan cyclic voltammetry to understand the underlying neurochemical mechanisms that are occurring with different social housing conditions.

DESCRIPTION:In this installment of the “Stranger Still” series\, we invite the poets and translators Sabine Huynh (French\, English\, Hebrew) and Karen Alkalay-Gut (English\, Hebrew\, Yiddish) to join us in a conversation about their experiences as multilingual poets in Israel and the role of translation in their work. They will read selections of their poems and translations\, including their recent collaboration: Huynh’s French translation Alkalay-Gut’s collection of Holocaust poetry\, Surviving Her Story/Survivre à son histoire. \n\nKaren Alkalay-Gut was born in London on the last night of the V-1 flying bomb attacks and grew up in Rochester\, New York\, completing a PhD in 1975 at the University of Rochester. Since 1972 she has lived in Israel\, raising a family\, and is retired from teaching poetry at Tel Aviv University. She was the founding chair of the Israel Association of Writers in English\, a position she held until 2014 and resumed in 2018. She was Vice Chair of the former Federation of Writers Unions in Israel and is currently a board member of the Yiddish Writers Association. She has written poetry for the cabaret ensemble Panic Ensemble\, as well as wide-ranging essays and scholarly articles. Her poetry publications include the recent collections A Word in Edgewise (English)\, Derakhim le-ehov (Ways to Love\, Hebrew)\, and Yerusha (Inheritance\, Yiddish/Hebrew). \n\nSabine Huynh is a poet\, translator and editor based in Tel Aviv. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is the author of a dozen books (poetry\, novel\, short stories\, essay\, diary)\, and numerous translations (from the French\, Hebrew and English). Her poetry collections include Kvar lo\, which won France’s 2017 CoPo Poetry Prize\, and Dans le tournant/Into the Turning\, a bilingual English-French book co-authored with Amy Hollowell. Her first novel\, La Mer et l’enfant\, was shortlisted for the 2014 Emmanuel-Roblès Prize and for the 2013 Chambery’s First Novel Festival Prize. With Haggai Linik\, she is the founding editor of the French-Hebrew literary translation magazine Peham. Her latest poetry collection Parler peau (« to speak skin ») was illustrated by Philippe Agostini and published last year by Æncrages & Co. Her French translation of the complete poetry of Anne Sexton is due out in 2021 with the feminist publishing house Editions des Femmes.\nHuynh Photo Credit: Miriam Alster\n\n\nZoom Registration Link: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/1216070911601/WN_IsQh-wJARNmcGBeqKf60Qg

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Prototype Nation: China and the Contested Promise of Innovation
DESCRIPTION:How did China’s mass manufacturing and “copycat” production become transformed\, in the global tech imagination\, from something holding the nation back to one of its key assets? This talk\, based on Professor Lindtner’s most recent publication \"Prototype Nation\" (Princeton University Press\, 2020)\, offers a rich transnational analysis of how the promise of democratized innovation and entrepreneurial life has shaped China’s governance and global image. With historical precision and ethnographic detail\, Professor Lindtner reveals how a growing distrust in Western models of progress and development\, including Silicon Valley and the tech industry after the financial crisis of 2007–08\, shaped the rise of the global maker movement and the vision of China as a “new frontier” of innovation.\n \n Silvia Lindtner is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in the School of Information. She researches\, writes and teaches about DIY (do-it-yourself) maker culture\, with a particular focus on its intersections with manufacturing and industry development in China. Drawing on her background in interaction design and media studies\, she merges ethnographic methods with approaches in design and making. This allows her to provide deep insights into emerging cultures of technology production and use\, from a sociological and technological perspective.\n \n Together with Anna Greenspan (NYU SH) and David Li (XinCheJian)\, Silvia Lindtner is also the co-founder of the Research Initiative Hacked Matter. Hacked Matter. It has\, since its inception in 2011\, organized a series of workshops\, lectures\, public panel discussions as well as hands-on engagements with questions of DIY making\, manufacturing\, and innovation ecosystems.\n\nZoom webinar\; attendance requires registration: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_wJ0Z2eYHQ6GWAu1oqDbkeA

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IISS Lecture. Re-Engaging with Abd al-Rahman Jami: An Intellectual History Project
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\; please register at https://myumi.ch/qg71e\n\n This talk is about re-engaging with a project about Jami (1414-1492) and his intellectual mission in Timurid Herat. The original project was completed almost a decade and a half ago in my dissertation. The aim of this talk is to think about how to develop a framework to re-engage with Jami’s intellectual mission. The earlier project had two major shortcomings as a study of intellectual history. First\, it did not pay attention to poetry sufficiently. Second\, it achieved little to contextualize Jami in the intellectual traditions he was connected with. I would like to reflect on the ways in which one can deal with and incorporate these three issues from an intellectual point of view.\n In both poetry and scholarly writings\, the challenge seems to be showing how i) Jami is connected to other people/thoughts/ways of expression — contemporaneous with Jami or earlier\; ii) the meaning of these connections\, and in general Jami’s poetry within the socio-political context of his time.\n In my historical contextualization\, the starting point will be identifying i) the general characteristics of individual Timurid rulers (e.g. the rationality of Sultan-Abu Said)\; or ii) periods within the reign of a particular ruler if he has reigned relatively long (e.g. experimentation and consolidation periods of Sultan-Husayn Bayqara). Along with an attempt at developing a framework to reevaluate Jami from an intellectual point of view\, another major aim of this talk is to ask for help/advice about possible strategies to do that.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Truth\, Lies\, and Style: Writing and Publishing Historical Fiction\"
DESCRIPTION:For Honors creative writing alum Allison Epstein ('14)\, the journey between \"inspiration\" and \"publication\" was a long one—seven years long\, to be exact. After drafting a novel for her senior honors thesis\, Allison went on to pitch\, sell\, and publish that thesis as her debut novel: A Tip for the Hangman (Doubleday\, Feb. 2021). Hangman is a historical thriller that follows the life of the 16th-century poet Christopher Marlowe and his secret career in service of Queen Elizabeth I's spymaster. (Her agent refers to the novel as \"the Dirtbag Kit Marlowe book\,\" a tagline Allison endorses.)\n \nAllison will share the inspiration and historical context behind her novel\, along with a behind-the-scenes look into the world of literary publishing. From the ins and outs of historical research to the white whale of signing with a literary agent\, she'll explain the lesser-known aspects of how a book makes it to print. She'll also answer any questions you care to ask about Early Modern spies\, a subject she delights in.\n \n\nAllison Epstein is a historical fiction author based in Chicago. By day\, she works as a marketing copywriter for a firm serving higher education and not-for-profit institutions. She earned her B.A. in English and creative writing from the University of Michigan in 2014 and her MFA in fiction from Northwestern University in 2020. When not writing\, she enjoys good theater and terrible puns. Find her at allisonepstein.com\, or on Instagram and Twitter @rapscallison. \n\nRegister on Sessions: https://myumi.ch/zxoVD

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Managing Sport Equipment Technological Advancements
DESCRIPTION:All sports depend\, to some extent\, on equipment\, and advances in equipment have the potential to shift an athlete's performances independent of their training and skill. This technological tension has recently shaken the sport of running in the form of shoe advances\, but many other sports have experienced and managed these same strains\, including swimming\, cycling\, tennis\, speed skating\, and many more. This seminar will explore how technological developments within a sport\, and the associated performance advantages they afford\, impact that sport sociologically. This panel will bring perspectives related to product availability and athlete sponsorship ties\, cultural perception and understanding of performance\, and developmental implications across myriad levels of sport (e.g.\, youth\, Olympic\, masters). This discussion will aim to inform our understanding of what is to be gained\, what might be lost\, and what can be managed as sport evolves with technological developments. An undercurrent of movement explored in multiple variations thread the works together\, realized through a variety of methods including painterly gesture\, repetitive mark-making\, performance with an audience or without\, spoken word\, ambient sound\, and reimagined instruments. The exhibition aspires to pull at the loosened threads of a social fabric in crisis\, revealing larger complex histories and art discourses\, nationally and internationally\, framed through the experiences and trajectories of Stamps alumni during their time in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Portraits of Lincoln (A Public Lecture of the Residential College & Program in the Environment Course Children Under Fire)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Portraits of Lincoln on Tuesday\, February 16\, from 2:30-3:30pm to learn about the consequences of early reading\, the boyhood of Lincoln\, and the politics of education and self-improvement of one of our most revered presidents. We'll be hearing from:\n\n >>> Dave Choberka\, Ph.D. Andrew W. Mellon Curator for University Learning and Programs at the University of Michigan Museum of Art\; \n\n >>> Julia Mickenberg\, Professor of American Studies\, University of Texas at Austin\n\n >>> Liz Goodenough\, RC lecturer in Arts & Ideas in the Humanities\n\nIn course Children Under Fire: Narratives of Sustainability (RCHUMS 337 / ENVIRON 337) taught by Liz Goodenough\, students learn that literature for and about children\, from the earliest folk tales\, has always addressed life and death. In diverse genres\, from horror story to high adventure\, from rags to riches\, young heroes sustain themselves in the face of adult decisions regarding scarcity (food and water)\, violence\, illness\, and abuse. This environmental humanities seminar examines how early reading mediated crises challenging the future lives of US Presidents and First Ladies--from Andrew Jackson and James Garfield to Eleanor Roosevelt and Barack Obama.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Aerospace Engineering Department Seminar: Electrified Aircraft: A New Design Space For a More Sustainable Aviation
DESCRIPTION:Gökçin Çınar\nResearch Engineer\nAerospace Systems Design Laboratory\nGeorgia Institute of Technology\n\nThe global aviation industry is an important contributor to climate change due to the products emitted by fossil fuel combustion. Electrified aircraft propulsion is a novel technology that has the potential to significantly reduce\, and even fully eliminate fuel consumption and aircraft emissions while allowing for more affordable and quieter flights. Electrification enables diverse propulsion architectures and fundamentally changes the relationship between the propulsion system and the airframe\, creating a very rich and complex aircraft design space with many exciting opportunities. However\, it also poses significant challenges due to technological bottlenecks\, lack of historical data\, and high levels of uncertainty. Thus\, potential environmental benefits can be easily diminished by suboptimal propulsion solutions.\n\nIn this talk\, I will address the diverse design space and the importance of performing architectural and operational trade studies in the early aircraft design stages. I will present a methodology to perform the sizing\, integration\, and performance evaluation of electrified aircraft. I will explore advanced design methods and surrogate modeling techniques to enable rapid evaluation of hundreds of sized and optimized designs. Finally\, I will outline some strategic areas for future research to maximize the environmental benefits of novel aircraft concepts.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Gökçin Çınar works as a Research Engineer at the Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory at Georgia Institute of Technology. Her main research interests include electrified aircraft and propulsion\, systems design and integration\, model-based engineering\, and advanced design methods. She is currently working on a range of government and industry funded research projects on novel aircraft technologies for greener aviation.\n\nDr. Çınar received her B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from Middle East Technical University and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. She serves as the Publications and Policy Chair of the AIAA Electrified Aircraft Technical Committee. She is also serving as the Technical Program Co-Chair for the 2021 AIAA/IEEE Electric Aircraft Technologies Symposium.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Democratization and violence in the Korean context
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This session will be held virtually EST through Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered the joining information will be sent to your email.\n\nRegister at:\nhttps://myumi.ch/r895z\n\nCapacity in violence is generally understood to be key condition of the state-building process. As capacity is achieved and a state gains supremacy over would-be competitors\, the use of violence by the state is hypothesized to “wither-away\,” especially in states that have made it into the democratic camp. However\, my work demonstrates\, theoretically and empirically\, that conventional wisdom is inadequate\, and that rather than withering away\, political violence evolves according to the changing socio-political environment and varying tasks of the state.\n\nUsing principally cases stemming from South Korea\, a high capacity\, consolidated democracy as a lens for theory building and corroboration\, my publications (and co-authored book project) chronicle the evolution of political violence\, from the state`s mobilization of thugs to suppress opposition at the early stages of the state-building process\, through its collaboration with violence specialists for developmental projects\, to the manipulation of quasi-governmental organizations after democratization in the late 1980s. My research (and the topic of this discussion) looks at how political development\, i.e. democratization\, has produced new demands for—and constraints on—political violence and how post-authoritarian governments have responded.\n\nJonson N. Porteux received his PhD from the University of Michigan (Political Science) in 2013\, with a focus on comparative politics and international relations\, and a regional emphasis on East Asia. He publishes most extensively on the economic and political causes and consequences of violence and democratization. Most recently his work has been featured in Democratization and the Journal of East Asian Studies.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Stearns Collection Lecture: “Devils\, Secret Societies\, and Musical Instruments in Liberia” - Lester Monts
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Virginia Martin Howard Lecture Series\n\nLester Monts is Professor Emeritus of Musicology at the University of Michigan\n\nThe ethnomusicological literature on music in West Africa contains several landmark studies on the performance practice\, history\, and function of musical instruments. The 21-string kora (Senegambia)\, the conical-shaped drum djembe (Senegal )\, the talking drums atumpan (Ghana)\, and the hour-glass shaped dundun (Nigeria) and others garner particular appeal and interest among organologists.  The Stearns Collection contains specimens of each of these instruments.  \n\nThis lecture focuses on the musical instruments commonly used by ethnic groups in northern Liberia and Southern Sierra Leone\, namely\, the Mende\, Gola\, Dei\, and Vai.  The data used in this presentation draws on more than 40 years of research among the Vai people of Liberia\, highlighting the role of musical instruments in numerous cultural contexts\, including their vital importance in masquerade performance\, recreational dance\, and the enactment of rituals and ceremonies of two pan-ethnic secret societies: Poro (Ɓɛli) for men and Sande (Bundu) for women.\n\nWatch at http://myumi.ch/yK51W\n\nDuring each webinar\, attendees may submit written questions which may be discussed in the Q&A period following the presentation.
