SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Microbiome Seminar: A microbial metabolite remodels the gut-liver axis following bariatric surgery
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Affiliation: \nDepartment of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology\nHarvard Medical School\n\nHosted By:\nMatthew Ostrowski\, PhD\nThomas Schmidt\, PhD\nMichigan Microbiome Project\n\nAbstract: Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for obesity and obesity-related type 2 diabetes. As a result of its minimal side-effect profile\, sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is currently the safest and most commonly performed bariatric surgery in the United States. Moreover\, this procedure is associated with changes in gut metabolites. In previous work\, we discovered that the host-produced compound cholic acid-7-sulfate (CA7S) is a gut-restricted TGR5 agonist with anti-diabetic properties and that this metabolite is elevated following SG. In new studies\, we have elucidated a microbiome-dependent pathway by which SG increases CA7S production. We found that a microbial metabolite\, lithocholic acid (LCA)\, is increased in murine portal veins post-SG and by activating the vitamin D receptor\, induces hepatic sulfotransferase expression to drive CA7S production. An SG-induced shift in the microbiome increases expression of the bile acid transporters Asbt and Ostα in the distal ileum\, a change that in turn facilitates selective transport of LCA across the gut epithelium. Cecal microbiota transplant from SG animals is sufficient to recreate the pathway in germ-free (GF) animals. Activation of this gut-liver pathway leads to CA7S synthesis and GLP-1 secretion\, for the first time causally connecting a microbial metabolite with the improvement of diabetic phenotypes following bariatric surgery. This study provides evidence that the microbiome\, and specifically\, the microbial metabolite LCA\, affects host metabolism\, illustrating the importance of studying metabolite transport and signaling in the enterohepatic axis.\n\nZoom Meeting: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99830183560

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Psychology Brown Bag:
DESCRIPTION:Nadia\n\nTitle:\nIncorporating Egalitarian Ideology in Models of Collective Action\n\nAbstract:\nWe propose that egalitarianism is related to collective action and policy support meant to reduce racial inequity\, and that this relationship is partly explained by egalitarian individuals’ increased recognition of racial discrimination. We test this pathway among groups of various positions within the US racial hierarchy and find support for the proposed model.\n\nWilson\n\nTitle:\nA First Look at Infectious Disease Concealment\n\nAbstract:\nIn March\, 2020 a man hid his COVID-19 symptoms so that he could visit his wife and newborn child in the maternity ward of a Rochester\, New York hospital. In addition to putting everyone in the hospital at risk of infection\, his deception actually caused his wife to fall ill with the virus less than a week after giving birth. What psychological processes explain this kind of concealment behavior? Drawing on insights from the behavioral immune system and literature on concealable stigmatized identity\, I will discuss the prevalence of disease concealment and its unique social costs and benefits. In our first two studies (N = 367)\, we find that a large majority of college students and adults freely report times when they concealed infectious disease in social situations\, and that decisions to conceal depend on the audience they would be concealing from. In our next two studies (N = 307)\, we find that people report being less likely to conceal an illness when there is a higher risk of transmitting that illness to others\, and when the symptoms they would pass along could be particularly debilitating. Together\, these four studies set the foundation for further inquiry into mechanisms underlying infectious disease concealment

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:An Honest Conversation: Diversity and Inclusion in Engineering
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, we witnessed several examples of social injustice and social unrest. As human beings and engineers\, we must decide how we want to respond to what happened and how we want to move forward. Calls to improve our approach to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) have coincided with the call to update our overall engineering curriculum. Over the years\, several initiatives have been launched to address such issues\, which primarily attempt to address perceived inadequacies in underrepresented students. However\, scarce efforts have been developed to address the engineering culture that has limited the full participation of women and people of color in engineering. Furthermore\, few of us in engineering have the knowledge\, skills\, or ability to productively engage with issues leading to the marginalization and social unrest. Rarely do we dare to apply our problem-solving or critical thinking approaches to how to educate or improving DEI. As a result\, the goal of this talk is to provide engineers with language to have an honest conversation about our individual and collective response to the inequity in engineering and realign our actions to improve engineering education. This impactful workshop will provide definitions and practical examples of key DEI concepts in engineering based on holistic interdisciplinary research.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Washtenaw Refugee Coalition – Refugees Given a Voice
DESCRIPTION:Over the recent years we have all become more aware of the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. Individuals and families from around the world are fleeing from war\, poverty\, and oppression. Attempts to enter our country have been met with physical and regulatory obstruction\, all in conflict with values many of us hold dear. Refugees and asylum seekers\, who are often invisible to those in power\, must rely on others to plead their collective cases to Congress.\n\nA group of Ann Arborites have decided to take action to address this injustice. The Washtenaw Refugee Coalition is a new interfaith group of passionate and dedicated individuals who are learning how to advocate on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers. You will be fascinated to hear the story of the group’s founding\, the training they have received\, and actions they have been taking. You may even find their cause to be one you want to embrace.\n\nPresenter Beth Wilensky is the founder and leader of the Washtenaw Refugee Coalition. She has served on the Board of Jewish Family Services (a local organization providing services to refugees)\, and is a Clinical Professor of Law in the Legal Practice Program at the University of Michigan.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The Proton Remains Puzzling
DESCRIPTION:Department Colloquium Link: http://myumi.ch/GkgBm\n\nNucleons (protons and neutrons) are the building blocks of atomic nuclei and are responsible for more than 99% of the visible matter in the universe. Despite decades of efforts in studying its internal structure\, there are still a number of puzzles surrounding the proton such as its spin and the charge radius. The proton charge radius puzzle developed more than 10 ten years ago refers to a discrepancy of 5-7 standard deviations between the ultrahigh precise values of the proton charge radius determined from muonic hydrogen Lamb shift measurements and the CODATA values compiled from electron-proton scattering experiments and ordinary hydrogen spectroscopy measurements. In this talk following a short introduction\, I will focus on the proton charge radius puzzle\, the latest experimental results\, especially those from the PRad experiment at Jefferson Lab\, and the future outlook with the PRad-II experiment.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michael Beauregard Seminar in Macroeconomics: How do firms build market share? (with David Argente\, Doireann Fitzgerald\, and Anthony Priolo)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nFirms are born small\, grow\, and die. We investigate an explanation for this process based on frictions in the accumulation of customers\, across and within markets segmented by geography. We use matched retail scanner and TV advertising data on consumer food to show that entrants grow both by adding customers in new markets and by reaching new customers in continuing markets. Growth in market share within markets is not associated with changes in markups\, but is associated with advertising. We use these facts to motivate and estimate a structural model of customer accumulation within and across markets. This allows us to estimate both the distribution of intrinsic heterogeneity across firms\, and frictions in the accumulation of customers. We find that these frictions contribute substantially to heterogeneity in firm size\, and to the gradual process of firm growth.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Special Joint Seminar between our Department and the Genome Science Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The human genome sequence folds in three dimensions (3D) into a rich variety of locus-specific contact patterns. Despite growing appreciation for the importance of 3D genome folding in evolution and disease\, we lack models for relating mutations in genome sequences to changes in genome structure and function. Towards that goal\, we discovered that the organization of gene regulatory domains within chromosomes and the specific sequences that sit at boundaries between domains are under strong negative selection in the human population and over primate evolution. Motivated by this signature of functional importance\, we developed a deep convolutional neural network\, called Akita\, that accurately predicts genome folding from DNA sequence alone. Representations learned by Akita underscore the importance of the structural protein CTCF but also reveal a complex grammar beyond CTCF binding sites that underlies genome folding. Akita enabled rapid in silico predictions for effects of sequence mutagenesis on the 3D genome\, including differences in genome folding across species and in disease cohorts\, which we are validating with CRISPR-edited genomes. This prediction-first strategy exemplifies my vision for a more proactive\, rather than reactive\, role for data science in biomedical research.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09\n\nShort bio: Dr. Katherine S. Pollard is Director of the Gladstone Institute of Data Science & Biotechnology\, Investigator at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub\, Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Graduate Program at UCSF.
