SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Resolution Office: Remote Learning Story Circle
DESCRIPTION:A Story Circle is a small group of individuals sitting in a circle\, sharing stories—usually from their own experience or imagination—focusing on a common theme. As each person in turn shares a story\, a richer and more complex story emerges. By the end\, people see both real differences and things their stories have in common. Story Circles are often understood as deriving from indigenous traditions. There are many variations (https://usdac.us).\nIn this session participants will be invited to share a story around the theme of Remote Learning. Staff from the Rackham Resolution Office will serve as facilitators for the process and will end the session by sharing campus resources and information related to the theme.\nThe story prompt for this session is: Share a story about remote learning you experienced this past term. What were elements that strengthened or challenged you?\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/Axy7Z.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time (one week preferred) to arrange for your requested accommodation(s) or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Workshop (Day 1) | From Empire to Nation-State: The Ottoman Armistice\, Imagined Borders\, and Displaced Populations (1918-1923)
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for the webinars here: http://myumi.ch/O4jGQ\n \n You need just one registration to attend the two-day workshop. After registration\, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the webinar.\n\nFor full details and schedule\, please visit: https://ii.umich.edu/armenian/news-events/all-events/workshops/february-2021--from-empire-to-nation-state--the-ottoman-armistic.html\n \n The First World War came to an end for the Ottoman Empire when the Armistice of Mudros was signed on October 30\, 1918. While the Ottoman government formed by the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) embarked upon a series of armed and political campaigns to save the Empire from collapse\, Ottoman minorities such as Armenians\, Greeks\, Assyrians\, and Arabs suffered from genocide and famine. It is well documented that the demographic engineering policies of CUP resulted in a significant decrease of Armenian\, Greek and Assyrian communities in Anatolia\, and a famine in Arab provinces of the empire killed thousands. Even though the wartime was equal to a “cataclysm” for Ottoman “minorities”\, the beginning of the Armistice years remarked a new start\, an opportunity for revival and rebirth. While the Armenian community leadership was organizing relief activities to save genocide survivors who were scattered throughout the\n \n Empire\, they envisioned the establishment of a “United Armenia” with the support of the Allied Powers. Anatolian Romioi (Orthodox Greeks)\, Arabs\, and Kurds\, in a similar fashion\, were motivated to declare independence to map their nation-states during a time when the world was living what has been referred to as the “Wilsonian moment.” This workshop will revisit and re-explore the Ottoman Armistice and the transition from empire to ethno-nation-state from hitherto neglected perspectives of Ottoman “minorities” through the lens of history\, literature\, and political science disciplines.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

DESCRIPTION:Illumina and the University of Michigan Advanced Genomics Core would like to invite you to join us for a workshop series. We will focus on building a foundational knowledge of Illumina Sequencing and Library Prep to ensure your success in many home-brew applications.\n\nIn this webinar\, we will give a comprehensive overview of the steps required to go from DNA (or RNA) to sequencing results. We will start by taking a deep dive into the Illumina Adapter structure as well as common methods for adding these adapters to your sample. We will discuss library preparation strategies including tagmentation\, ligation\, and PCR and how you can incorporate these methods into home-brew applications. We will then discuss indexing strategies and how to choose which is best for your project. Lastly\, we will demystify what is happening to your libraries on the sequencer and how you can use this knowledge to generate the best data possible. This will include information such as how to determine the best coverage and read length for your libraries as well as how to ensure proper color balance and base diversity.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:That Ain't Right: AI Mistakes and Black Lives
DESCRIPTION:Our nation is poised to invest billions of dollars to remain the leader in artificial intelligence as well as quantum computing. This investment is critically needed to reinvigorate the science that will shape our future.\n\nIn order to get the most from this investment\, we have to create an environment that will produce innovations that are not just technical advancements but will also benefit and uplift everybody in our society. We are increasingly seeing how AI is having a pervasing impact on our lives\, both for good and for bad.\n\nThis talk will explore the causes of systemic inequality in AI\, the impact of this inequity within the field of AI and across society today\, and offer thoughts for the next wave of AI inference systems for robotics that could provide introspectability and accountability. Ideas explored build upon the BlackInComputing.org open letter and \"Before we put $100 billion into AI…\" opinion.\n \nEqual opportunity for anyone requires equal opportunity for everyone.\n\nThis semester\, we are excited to offer three events as follow-ups to the Six Diversity Myths articles\, starting with Professor Jenkins' on inequality in AI. Our February and March DEI lectures will include faculty and an alum from the articles\, and the EnginTalk will feature CoE students.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Farm Stand Student Engagement Working Group
DESCRIPTION:The Farm Stand is weekly pop-up market and education project that sells produce grown by students for students. The project is a collaboration between the UM Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) and the Campus Farm. Hopefully\, the Farm Stand will safely re-open in the summer of 2021. Join us as we plan educational partnerships for the Farm Stand's future.\n\nUM Sustainable Food Program working groups serve as a creative\, free-thinking space where the needs and wishes directly from students can be realized\, by students. There are three “themed” working groups: Campus Farm Stand\, DEI\, and Campus Collaboration. These themes serve as spaces where students are able to meet and collaborate with other people from different majors\, interests\, and backgrounds to brainstorm about what sustainable food justice and practices should look like at the university and surrounding communities. Working Group meeting times vary by semester. The Farm Stand Working Group meets bi-weekly on Thursdays from 3-4pm. Questions? Email bfrom@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CLASP Seminar Series: Prof. Merav Opher
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Merav Opher of Boston University will give a virtual lecture as part of the CLASP Seminar Series. \n\nThis is a Zoom virtual event.\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91268753609?pwd=d3JXTnpwZ00wUmpLaFpLaDkvVDdBdz09\nMeeting ID: 912 6875 3609\nPasscode: 068208\n\n\"Our Heliospheric Shield\"\n\nABSTRACT:\nAstrospheres shield stars and their systems of planets from energetic particles called galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) that stream from the galaxy. The shielding of GCRs by astrospheres is a fundamental\, open question whose answer is critical to assessing the habitability of exoplanets. But even before we study the shielding properties of other astrospheres to ascertain habitability\, we must understand why the only known astrosphere that harbors life\, Earth’s Sun’s heliosphere\, does so. Space science is at a pivotal point in generating new understandings of the heliosphere due to the flood of new in situ data from the Voyager 1 (V1)\, Voyager 2 (V2)\, and New Horizon spacecraft\, combined with the energetic neutral atom (ENA) maps generated by IBEX and Cassini. To date\, our best large-scale computer models fail to reproduce critical observations\, such as the size of the heliosphere\, the plasma speeds and directions\, and the width of the heliosheath.\n\nHeliospheric observations indicate that processes such as turbulence\, reconnection\, wave-particle interactions and thermal conduction play a crucial role in the outer layers of the solar system\; however\, these processes have not yet been included in current global models. Observations by Voyager indicate that suprathermal particles\, such as pickup ions (PUIs\, ionized particles formed from the interaction of the ionized solar wind with the neutral interstellar H atoms)\, carry most of the plasma pressure in outer layers of the solar system. How these suprathermal populations evolve in response to kinetic effects\, such as turbulence\, reconnection and acceleration\, is poorly understood\, but given their energy contribution they significantly impact global scales. Other remaining puzzles are: 1) The acceleration region and mechanism for anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs)\; the two Voyager spacecraft found no evidence of acceleration of high-energy ACRs at the termination shock (TS) but instead detected their increase of the ACRs as they moved across the heliosheath (HS). 2) The HS 30-50% thinner than current models predict 3) The magnetic field direction doesn’t change at the HP and we don’t know how far from the HP does the solar wind influence extend 4) The significant increase in Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) just prior to the HP crossings by both V1 and V2\, and the unusual anisotropies observed in the LISM are not understood.\n\nIn this talk I will review some of the puzzles and advances being made in understanding some of the fundamental features of the heliosphere as well as the efforts being made in that regard by the SHIELD DRIVE Science Center (http://sites.bu.edu/shield-drive/). These aspects include the basic “shape” of the heliosphere\, the extent of its tail\, the nature of the heliosheath\, and the structure of the local interstellar medium (LISM) just upstream of the heliopause (HP).\n\nPlease join us!

SUMMARY:Other: Using native mass spectrometry and nanodiscs to study assembly of membrane protein and antimicrobial peptide complexes\n
DESCRIPTION:Native mass spectrometry (MS) has emerged as a powerful technique for studying the oligomeric state and interactions of membrane proteins. However\, native MS can be challenging for smaller and more fragile membrane protein and transmembrane peptide complexes. To address this challenge\, we have used native MS to study small viral membrane protein complexes in both detergent micelles and lipid nanodiscs. Using charge reduction reagents for stabilization and advanced data analysis techniques to unravel complex spectra\, we discovered that viroporin complexes can be highly sensitive to their environment\, showing different oligomeric states in different lipids/detergents\, with different pH conditions\, and with addition of antiviral drugs. Unexpected oligomeric states have been observed that do not match existing structural models\, highlighting previously unseen behavior of these complexes. We have also studied assembly of antimicrobial peptide complexes in lipid nanodiscs. Antimicrobial peptides are also highly sensitive to the lipid environment\, showing unique assembly pathways that are controlled by the thickness of the lipid bilayer. Ultimately\, we expect these applications of native MS will reveal new insights into the biology of infectious disease and provide new directions for antiviral and antibacterial drug discovery. \nMichael Marty (University of Arizona)

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: The Inventor Tells the Story of How the AgustaWestland Project Zero\, the World First All-Electric Vertical Takeoff Aircraft\, was Born
DESCRIPTION:James Wang\nProfessor of Aircraft Design\nDirector of the eVTOL Research & Innovation Centre\nNanyang Technological University\n\nIn 2013 WIRED Magazine named Dr. Wang “the Steve Jobs of Rotorcraft” for inventing the AgustaWestland Project Zero: world’s first all-electric VTOL aircraft. This secret project was created by Dr. James Wang in 2010\, when he was the Vice President of R&D at AgustaWestland. In this seminar\, Dr. Wang will present the story of how he led a small skunkworks team and working quietly with 16 international partners to design\, built and tested this disruptive eVTOL aircraft in only 6 month. The complete project was funded internally and was finally unveiled by debuting at the 2013 Paris Airshow. It instantly went viral and sparked the global eVTOL revolution and race that we see today. During his term as the VP of R&D\, he has created and led over 60 research projects and he wrote the 15-year technology strategy plan for AgustaWestland. (This presentation is based on the Royal Aeronautical Society Hensen & Stringfellow Lecture presented by Dr. Wang.)\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. James Wang has held several executive leadership positions and has 30 years of experience in aerospace and high-tech industries\; including as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Vice President of R&D at Leonardo Helicopters\; led Strategic Sales and worked on many helicopter designs at Sikorsky Aircraft. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Communication and Media Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion:\n\nAudience Research Hot Off The Press: Lessons Learned from Three Book Projects \n\nAndre Cavalcante\, Associate professor at the University of Virginia with a dual appointment in the departments of Media Studies and Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality. \n\nTalk Abstract: Qualitative audience research is an exciting\, frustrating\, time consuming\, and profoundly necessary field in media studies. In this talk\, I discuss lessons learned from three audience research projects I’ve conducted since my time as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. These projects include: Struggling for Ordinary: Media and Transgender Belonging in Everyday Life\, Purple States: Young\, Queer\, and Connected in Uncertain Times\, and COVID Connections: Media and Everyday Life During a Global Pandemic. For each project\, I discuss two findings from my research and share thoughts on the practice of conducting qualitative media inquiry. \n \nSmashing Trump's Star\nAndrea McDonnell\, Associate Professor of Communication & Media Studies at Emmanuel College\n\nLecture Abstract: Tourist sites dedicated to celebrity life and history provide visitors with an opportunity to engage with and celebrate famous figures who intrigue and inspire. But what happens when visitors use star sites not to revere\, but to resist? When shared on social media\, can personal gestures of defiance be transformed into political dialogue? Recent activity at Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame suggests that engagement with tourist sites\, however personal or ephemeral\, can function as a mode of political resistance\, one that demonstrates the fluidity of the celebrity sign and the public’s ability to exert agency over its meaning in our contemporary media landscape.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Risk\, Bodies\, and Disease: Transatlantic Slavery and the History of Science and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:This talk will examine the history of the slave trade in the Iberian Atlantic and its relationship to the emergence of novel practices related to the study and quantification of bodies and nature. Specifically\, it will discuss the development of ideas about the human body\, population\, and disease that appeared in Iberian-Atlantic slave markets during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The practices undergirding the development of the slave trade as a technological\, bureaucratic\, economic\, legal\, and intellectual enterprise went hand in hand with the appearance of new notions about risk\, disease\, nosology\, and population health that would become normative in subsequent decades. In analyzing the invisibility of both this history and the archives of the slave trade in traditional HSMT narratives\, this lecture will also examine the role that ideas about knowledge (and what constitutes knowledge) have had in shaping fundamental and exclusionary tenets in the histories of science and Medicine in Euro America.\n\nPablo F. Gómez is associate professor in the Department of Medical History and Bioethics\, and the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He works on histories of knowledge-making\, race\, and health and corporeality with a particular focus on Latin America\, the Caribbean\, and more largely the African Diaspora. His book The Experiential Caribbean Creating Knowledge and Healing in the Early Modern Atlantic\, won the William H. Welch medal in medical history\, the Albert J. Raboteau Book Prize in Africana religion\, and Honorable Mention for the Bolton-Johnson Book Prize in Latin American history.\n\nFree and open to the public. This is a remote event and will take place online via Zoom.\n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lisa D. Cook on diversity and innovation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion between Lisa D. Cook and Betsey Stevenson on economics\, development\, diversity\, and innovation. Professor Cook's research on innovation and diversity has shown that while both women and underrepresented minorities have earned an increasing share of bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees in fields most associated with invention\, patent activity for these groups has not increased. What does this disparity reveal about our economy and how can we close the gap? What policies might be put in place to help encourage innovation among underrepresented groups?

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Matthew Duschenes (Applied Physics) and Yi Zhu (Civil and Environmental Engineering)
DESCRIPTION:MATTHEW DUSCHENES: I am in my third year of the Applied Physics & Scientific Computing Ph.D. programs\, after completing a master’s in theoretical physics in my home country of Canada. As a member of Dr. Krishna Garikipati’s Computational Physics group\, I am currently working on data driven modelling and am collaborating with several groups on applying these graph theoretic approaches to various systems of interest.\n\n\"GRAPH THEORETIC APPROACHES FOR PHYSICAL SYSTEMS\": Numerical analyses of physical systems are conventionally performed using direct numerical simulations\, that have proven highly successful\, yielding high fidelity solutions to very high dimensional problems\, such as boundary value problems with upwards of tens of millions of degrees of freedom. However\, there is always a balance to be met between the desire for higher accuracy and additional physics to be modeled\, and the complexity\, interpret-ability and ease of representation of such solutions. To aid in this dilemma\, I will be introducing a novel graph theoretic approach\, allowing for lower dimensional\, reduced order models to be produced\, given small amounts of high fidelity data. In this talk I will explain how such an approach allows for an intuitive representation of the states of a systems\, and how it is possible to use a non-local calculus\, allowing for rigorous operators and equations to be defined on the graph. I will then be discussing some implementation details\, and convey the generality\, validity\, and future applications of this framework through some example results from collaborations.\n\nYI ZHU: Yi is a 3rd year PhD candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering & Scientific Computation. His research focuses on simulation\, design\, and fabrication of active origami systems for engineering devices\, and is particularly focused on micro-scale shape morphing systems inspired by origami.\n\n\"SIMULATION AND DESIGN OF MICRO-ORIGAMI SYSTEMS\": In this talk\, we will introduce some recent advancement in the simulation and the design of micro-origami systems. We will discuss the micro-origami structures we fabricated and the rapid simulation framework we developed to capture the behaviors of these active origami. We will focus on the simulation framework and demonstrate how we can capture the thermo-mechanically coupled folding behavior and contacts between origami panels effectively and rapidly. Finally\, we will introduce some ongoing work on extracting origami design principle with interpretable machine learning\, which demonstrates how we can use the simulation framework to create better origami design.\n\nRegister: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwrdeurpz4vEtUPKlRzUo1tQy3mskgineol

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LACS Event. Prison-Industrial Complexity: On Carceral Material Worlds & Ethical Aporias in Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Event. Register at http://myumi.ch/R5D0Q\n\nChris Garces is Research Professor at Universidad San Francisco de Quito\, and a Visiting Invited Professor in the Law School at Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar\, Ecuador. His ethnographic interests range from the study of politics and religion—or contemporary political theologies–to the Western outgrowth of penal state politics\, and counter-histories of Catholic ethics in Latin America. His co-edited volume\, *Carceral Communities in Latin America: Troubling Prison Worlds in the 21st Century *(Palgrave Studies in Prisons and Penality)\, will be published in February 2021.\n \nEverywhere it seems\, democracy has been freighted with the psychic weight of punitive infrastructure. Symptomatically\, for most citizens\, a world without prisons is impossible even to imagine. But consider the flip side of this most curious problem: uncomfortable or intrusive memories—that in the name of enforcing justice and democratic order\, living human beings are being held in cages—publicly forgotten almost as soon as they are remembered. The prison is a machine for disappearing humans and remaking worlds. Carcerality as such boxes the prisoner into what might be called ethical aporias\, unrelenting state-imposed sacrifice and civil disregard\, or an experimental process of human disposal which nevertheless demands increasingly accelerated flows of exchange between free citizens and dehumanized offenders. In this talk\, I explore how even the most modest of prison technologies participate in penal infrastructure’s human unmaking and world-remaking processes. Taking into account Ecuador’s 20th century material history of a humble water spigot in a municipal prison\, I demonstrate the perverse tenacity of carceral relations and how penality itself—the state-sponsored ritual reproduction of punishment across the prison-neighborhood nexus—involves continuous\, albeit disavowed human experimentation on diverse citizen-subjects.\n \nLecture presented in conjunction with HIST197: Journeys & Stories\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.\n\nCo-sponsors: Department of History\, Prison Creative Arts Project\, and The Quito Project\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Recruitment FA2021 FAST Lecture | At the Origins of Roman Urbanism: The Gabii Project
DESCRIPTION:The Gabii Project was started in 2007 to investigate the origins of Roman urbanism. The site offered a rare opportunity in that respect because it had shrunk to a fraction of its original size before the great monumentalization phase. Thus\, Mid-Republican\, archaic\, and Iron Age remains lie directly under the surface. Thanks to the open-area excavation of over two acres of the ancient city\, important information about the long and complex formation process of central Italian urbanization has been acquired. \n\nThe Gabii Project aims to redefine the concept of \"big dig\" for the 21st century. In this sense\, it conceptualized the big dig as a logistical platform that makes it easier for a multiplicity of research agendas to be pursued. Methodological self-analysis and innovation are built into the field and recording practices. Digital\, online publication is leveraged as a way to disseminate data rapidly and thoroughly.\n\nZoom meeting room opens at 5:45\; lecture begins at 6:00. \n\nZoom Meeting ID: 980 2560 5670\nPasscode: 052246

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Lecture Series | At the Crossroads of Peace and Coexistence: Documenting the Lives of Japanese Wives of Korean Repatriates
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this lecture will begin at 7pm\, and all posted event times are in the U.S. Eastern Time Zone.\n\nKorean photographer Kim Jong Wook has spent the last seventeen years taking photographs of elderly Japanese women who married Korean men during the colonial period (1910-1945)\, accompanied their husbands’ repatriation to Korea\, and remained in Korea after liberation in 1945. These women were housed in Nazareth Nursing Center in Gyeongju\, which served as a shelter. As spouses from the former colonizing power\, Japanese women in postwar Korea often became targets of both misogynic and ethnic violence and were not afforded social or domestic protection. Nazareth provided a permanent home for these women\, where Kim built close relationships with them to gain enough access to take photographs of their portraits and daily lives. These photographs\, alongside their oral testimonies\, provide material that highlights the overlooked history of Japanese women during and after post-liberation repatriation.\n \n Kim Jongwook is a freelance documentary photographer who was based in Gyeongju since 1987. Kim’s documentary photo project on the Japanese wives of Korean repatriates was featured in BBC (2019) and Hankyoreh Newspaper in Korea (2017). He presented the same project at Hiroshima University (2017) and the Jeonju International Festival in Korea (2014). Kim received his Ph.D from Kyeongju University for his research on this topic. Kim currently operates the Kim Jong Wook Photography Research Institute in Gyeongju.\n\nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Modeling the Message
DESCRIPTION:Book artist Alisa Banks will discuss the relationship between content and form in creating artists’ books.\n\nFor example\, her work When is now?\, a recent acquisition of the U-M Library\, is comprised of a circular wooden box that\, when opened\, contains what appears to be the top of a person’s head. As you peer into the box\, only the person’s hair is visible\, nestled in the bottom of the container. A poem encircles the lid. Banks will walk us through a selection of her works and the decisions that went into their eventual forms.\n\nPresented by the University of Michigan Library as part of a Book Arts Studio series.
