Flight cancellations and trade restrictions by countries, as well as closing borders, have severely constrained access to essential medicines, including vaccines. Beginning 2020, the world will experience the largest mass vaccination campaign in its history with forecasted demand of up to 15 billion (at two doses per person) vaccinations by 2023. Delivering multiple new and novel vaccine candidates of varying profiles will further strain limited cold chain capacities in low-income countries. In these settings, vaccination campaigns will be unlike that of routine childhood or flu vaccinations; vaccines will have to be secured, stored and transported to areas where cold chain challenges persist. It is anticipated that cold chain logistics and capacity needs will demand an increase significantly greater than the current level of investment. A global effort to establish and sustain health supply chains to deliver a COVID-19 vaccine, auxiliary commodities and, new cold chain equipment when it becomes available, whilst maintaining program continuity is needed. This urgent requirement will prompt a re-think of how development partners respond to the current cold chain transportation eco-system for the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines. This panel discussion will address plans and programs to build robust in-country logistics \/ distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. Across time and place, changes in one institution can reverberate through other institutions, and importantly, when we attempt to intervene toward equity in one institution, other institutions can move to restore this toxic equilibrium. Cultural racism, which encompasses the socially accepted ideologies, values, and behavioral norms determined by the dominant power group, sets this equilibrium. Particularly insidious as it operates on the level of our shared social subconscious, the processes that comprise cultural racism are invisible to many because they are our \u201cgivens\u201d, our assumptions, our defaults \u2013 but the result shapes our answers to the question: Whose life counts?\r\n\r\nFor our 6th annual University of Michigan RacismLab Symposium on the Study of Racism, we pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. James Jackson, whose mentorship guided our 1st annual symposium in 2015 and resulted in our guest edited Social Science and Medicine special issue on cultural and structural racism. In the introduction to this special issue, we called for all scholarship on race and health to be grounded in interdisciplinary frameworks of cultural and structural racism and critical race theory.\r\n\r\nOur annual symposium continues to be sponsored by the University of Michigan Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research. When societies separate groups of people in the ways that we do in the U.S., that separation has not only economic, political, and sociological consequences, it also affects the psychology of the people in those societies due to social cognitive processes. In this talk, I will share recent findings from my program of research that has been using the United States as a context to examine how patterns of segregation and other forms of social stratification seep into the mind and affect how people perceive and make meaning of the world around them. I will also discuss the consequences of those meaning-making processes for people\u2019s judgments, motivations, and decisions, particularly in the domains of education, health, and environmental sustainability. Ray Yung, M.D., Chief of the Geriatrics Center, will be introducing Dr. Stonington.\r\n\r\nScott Stonington is a medical and cultural anthropologist at the University of Michigan and an internal medicine physician. He has a Ph.D in Anthropology from UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and a MD from UC San Francisco.
