SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘You Will Die at Twenty'”\n \n About the movie:\n NYTimes Critics Pick! Winner of the Lion of the Future Award for best Debut Feature at the Venice Film Festival\, YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY is visually sumptuous “coming-of-death” fable. During her son’s naming ceremony\, a Sheikh predicts that Sakina’s child will die at the age of 20. Haunted by this prophecy\, Sakina becomes overly protective of her son Muzamil\, who grows up knowing about his fate. As Muzamil escapes Sakina’s ever-watchful eye\, he encounters friends\, ideas and challenges that make him question his destiny. Sudan’s first Oscar submission\, YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY is an auspicious debut and a moving meditation on what it means to live in the present.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Microeconomics | Industrial Organization: Algorithmic Pricing and Competition: Empirical Evidence from the German Retail Gasoline Market
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe provide the first empirical analysis of the relationship between algorithmic pricing (AP) and competition by studying the impact of adoption in Germany's retail gasoline market\, where software became widely available in 2017. Because adoption dates are unknown\, we identify adopting stations by testing for structural breaks in AP markers\, finding most breaks to be around the time of widespread AP introduction. Because station adoption is endogenous\, we instrument using headquarter adoption. Adoption increases margins\, but only for non-monopoly stations. In duopoly markets\, margins increase only if both stations adopt\, suggesting that AP has a significant effect on competition.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIRA Conversations on Inclusion and Equity Presents:
DESCRIPTION:“Diversity in Astronomy: The Role of Summer Research Programs” \n\nSummer research is probably one of the most effective ways to give students experiences and motivation for a career in science. In 2002\, I served as the first director of the UW-Madison Astrophysics REU program\, and I have been involved in this program ever since\, including running the program during the one summer where we had a gap in funding. I will describe the evolution of this program\, my thoughts and experiences about what works\, and what we could be doing better as a community. The continuity of this program has allowed us to obtain funding from the UW-Madison’s Graduate School\, individual grants\, and other sources. (This additional support has allowed us to fund 45 additional students beyond the NSF supported students.) From 2002 to 2018\, over fifty mentors have worked with a total of 175 students\, including 92 women (53%)\, 49 students who are members of under-represented minorities (URM\, 28%)\, and four students with documented disabilities. We now have fifty-one alumni who have earned their PhDs (22 in Astronomy/Space Physics\, 14 in Physics\, and nine in other areas)\, including twenty-five women and eleven URM alumni.\n\nPlease note: Should you require any reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access and opportunity related to this event please contact Nicholle Cardinal at ndcard@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Eun Yi Chung\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Economics\, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Classical two-sample permutation tests for equality of distributions have exact size in finite samples\, but they fail to control size for testing equality of parameters that summarize each distribution. This paper proposes permutation tests for equality of parameters that are estimated at root-n or slower rates. Our general framework applies to both parametric and nonparametric models\, with two samples or one sample split into two subsamples. Our tests have correct size asymptotically while preserving exact size in finite samples when distributions are equal. They have no loss in local-asymptotic power compared to tests that use asymptotic critical values. We propose confidence sets with correct coverage in large samples that also have exact coverage in finite samples if distributions are equal up to a transformation.\n\nWe apply our theory to four commonly-used hypothesis tests of non-parametric functions evaluated at a point. Lastly\, simulations show good finite sample properties of our tests.\n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed via Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/94350208889\nThere will be a virtual reception to follow\n\n\nhttps://economics.illinois.edu/profile/eunyi

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Biophysics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Biophysics Virtual Seminar Series presents:\n\nDr. Samuel Butcher - Steenbock Professor of Biomolecular Structure\, Department of Biochemistry\, University of Wisconsin-Madison\n\n*“The epitranscriptome has been shaped by the co-evolution of RNA writer and reader proteins.”*\n\nABSTRACT: The epitranscriptome is characterized by dozens of post-transcriptional chemical modifications to RNA.  These chemical modifications are catalyzed by enzymes\, or “writers” that chemically mark both coding and non-coding RNAs.  The post-transcriptional marks are then read by protein “readers” that bind to the RNA modifications and help direct their cognate RNAs towards different pathways in the cell. I will present our work showing how RNA writers\nand readers have co-evolved to shape the epitranscriptome input and output. A series of comparative molecular structures will be described that illustrate how very subtle changes in enzyme active sites of RNA modifying enzymes result in different chemical marks that have co-\nevolved with RNA reader proteins\, which can adopt modular quaternary structures that are specifically tuned to read different modifications. This co-evolution of RNA writers and readers impacts nearly every step of eukaryotic gene expression.\n\n*Join us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92759610297*

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Book Talk | The Globally Familiar Digital Hip Hop\, Masculinity\, and Urban Space in Delhi
DESCRIPTION:In The Globally Familiar Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan traces how the rapid development of information and communication technologies in India has created opportunities for young people to creatively explore their gendered\, classed\, and racialized subjectivities in and through transnational media worlds. His ethnography focuses on a group of diverse young\, working-class men in Delhi as they take up the African diasporic aesthetics and creative practices of hip hop. Dattatreyan shows how these aspiring b-boys\, MCs\, and graffiti writers fashion themselves and their city through their online and offline experimentations with hip hop\, thereby accessing new social\, economic\, and political opportunities while acting as consumers\, producers\, and influencers in global circuits of capitalism. In so doing\, Dattatreyan outlines how the hopeful\, creative\, and vitally embodied practices of hip hop offer an alternative narrative of urban place-making in \"digital\" India.\n\nRegistration for this Zoom lecture is required: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwscuyvqjIsE9aUrJqJmL3Sy-hBlM9endk1

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:UMMAA Brown Bag Lecture Series: Life in the Center: Investigating Residential Contexts at Letchworth Mounds (8JE337)
DESCRIPTION:Letchworth Mounds is among the largest Woodland period ceremonial centers in Florida and includes one of the state’s tallest Pre-Columbian mounds\, but has been understudied by archaeologists and omitted from regional syntheses. Despite the massive scale of the site and its primary mound\, previous testing has produced little evidence of long-term habitation at Letchworth. Last year\, the Letchworth Habitation Area Archaeological Project utilized remote sensing and targeted excavations to assess when and how people lived at the site. In this presentation\, I discuss results from last year’s fieldwork\, including a new chronology for Letchworth and the remains of a Woodland period building—the first one found at Letchworth and one of only a handful identified in the region. Based on these results\, I will present an interpretation of daily life at Letchworth\, comparisons with other sites in the region\, and models of ceremonial center occupation in the Southeast.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Viral hijacking of host molecular motors to promote nuclear entry
DESCRIPTION:During entry\, most DNA viruses must navigate the crowded cellular environment to reach the nucleus where transcription and replication of the viral genome occur. How polyomavirus (PyV)\, a small\, DNA tumor virus\, accomplishes this essential step in infection is unclear. In mammalian cells\, intracellular transport is facilitated largely by two host motors\, kinesin and cytoplasmic dynein\, which move cargo along microtubules towards the periphery and center of the cell\, respectively. We reported that dynein motor activity is required for PyV disassembly and nuclear arrival\, but the exact mechanisms by which it promotes this process were unknown. Processive dynein activity requires a three-protein complex composed of the dynein motor\, dynactin activator and an adaptor that confers cargo specificity. Unexpectedly\, our most recent data revealed that the BICD2 adaptor is sufficient to disassemble the virus independent of the other components within the complex revealing cargo remodeling as a novel function of dynein adaptors. As BICD2 associates with both dynein and kinesin and is involved in cargo transport to the nuclear membrane\, we are now investigating the role of these factors in the subsequent nuclear arrival and import of PyV. \n\nHost: Matt Chapman

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:DEI in Engineering Pedagogy - Find Your Students
DESCRIPTION:Diversity\, equity and inclusion (DEI) are central and defining components of pedagogy. When we don’t explicitly consider DEI in our courses (syllabi\, assignments\, exams\, grades) we end up actively contributing to an oppressive\, inequitable monoculture. One of most helpful and inclusive practices we can cultivate as teachers is to listen deeply and compassionately. Drawing from research on cognition\, learning and epistemology as well as my own experience as a researcher and teacher\, I have a few suggestions for how to use listening as a teaching tool. All teaching requires a contract between the teachers and the taught\, and the default (historical and tacit) contract puts undue and inequitable burdens on our students. It is our responsibility as educators to change our practices to address these inequities.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Early Career Scientists Symposium | Natural History Collections: Drivers of Innovation
DESCRIPTION:A virtual symposium held on five consecutive Fridays beginning March 5\, 2021.\n\nREGISTRATION required for Zoom entry. Registrants will receive the Zoom link and passcode via email. See links this page to register and for more information.\n\nSession l\n1 pm	Welcome and introduction: Cody Thompson\n\n1:05 pm	Opening remarks: Dan Rabosky\n\n1:15 pm	Keynote presentation: Rob Guralnick\, Associate Curator\, Biodiversity Informatics\, Florida Museum of Natural History\, University of Florida\n\nTalk title: Sizing up new uses of natural history collections for ecogeography and global change biology\n\n2 pm	Panel discussion: Rob Guralnick and Dan Rabosky\n\nAbstract\nBody size is a key integrator trait because it influences nearly all aspects of organismal biology. It has strong relationships with fitness\, and is influenced by a number of biotic and abiotic factors\, while also potentially functionally and structurally constrained. Given its central importance\, body size has long been studied by ecologists and evolutionary biologists\, including burgeoning interest in size change as a key response to global changes such as human predation and global warming. In this talk\, I show the power of natural history collections to inform about long-standing and new questions about body size change broadly over space and time. I will first describe efforts to compile and share millions of measurements that have routinely been taken by field vertebrate biologists\, utilizing a growing informatics toolkit and semantic web approaches to make those available. I then provide four case studies\, two focused on examining a classical ecogeographical rule\, Bergmann’s Rule. The first case study takes an initial look at this rule across 1000s of vertebrate species. The second focuses on a narrower subset but examines multiple climate predictors\, not just temperature\, and asks if species climate niche determines intraspecific body size change. The third case study asks if we can use natural history collections to understand body size changes over the recent past and due to climatic factors and human population changes\, focusing on a case study on deer mice across North America. Finally\, I showcase the potential to look over very broad evolutionary time\, and understand shape and size change of butterfly wings\, again using the power of natural history collections\, showcasing vastly different evolutionary rates for fore- and hindwing shape and size. I close noting the importance of building the infrastructure to support the concept of the extended specimen\, as a transformational next step in facilitating novel use of natural history collections.\n\nRead more\, including about the speakers and their talks\, on the ECSS website: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/ecss/ \n\nREGISTER: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/ecss/home/register/\n\nIllustration: John Megahan. DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. Register at https://myumi.ch/zx790\n\nThe Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar is pleased to announce our new public lecture ‘Revelations from the Cairo Geniza on the Ottoman Era in Egypt with Professor Jane Hathaway.\n \n The Abstract:\n \n \"In this talk\, I will present findings from my recent research in Ottoman-era documents of the Cairo Geniza. While the Geniza is well-known as a rich source for the economic and social history of Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean during the high Middle Ages (roughly 10th-early 13th centuries)\, the smaller volume of documents from the Ottoman period has remained understudied. For the past several months\, I have worked with Arabic-script documents from this corpus. My talk will focus on a paleographically challenging document describing an inheritance dispute in the Mediterranean port of Damietta in 1538\, only twenty-one years after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt. The case sheds light on the status of Jewish converts to Islam\, on Ottoman efforts to revive Damietta as a commercial entrepôt\, and on continuities between late Mamluk Sultanate-era and Ottoman-era judicial and chancery practices\".

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: Probing cortical inhibition in visual cortex with transcranial magnetic stimulation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nPaired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive method to stimulate localized brain regions and is a useful tool for examining GABA-mediated inhibitory function. Despite widespread use in motor cortex\, paired-pulse TMS is seldom performed in sensory areas due to variable\, qualitative metrics. In this talk\, I will discuss a project in which we assessed the reliability and validity of tracing TMS-induced phosphenes (short-lived artificial percepts) to investigate the stimulation parameters necessary to elicit decreased visual cortex excitability with paired-pulse TMS. I will then present preliminary data exploring how this newly developed measure of visual cortical inhibition relates to Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy measures of GABA concentration\, and how it can be applied to the study of aging. Previous literature reveals that GABA concentration declines with age across many brain regions\; I will therefore also provide preliminary results that investigate age differences in this TMS measure of visual inhibitory activity.

SUMMARY:Well-being:Healing Justice: Fabric of Community
DESCRIPTION:Gain some perspective as we dig deep into the power of Meaning! How do you find meaning in your life\, and how do different identities we hold play a role in how we find meaning? We will be exploring this through two separate workshops led by CAPS \"Healing Justice: Holistic Self-Care During Challenging Times \". \n\nU-M Counseling and Psychological Services will offer two workshops (“Healing Justice in the Fabric of Community” and “Healing Justice: Rediscovering Spirit” ) which focus on components of Loretta Pyles’ (2018) Healing Justice: Self-Care for Change Makers. \n\nThis Fabric of Community session will work towards defining ourselves through the health and wealth of our neighbors\, community and planet. There is an emphasis on 1) healing one's community while in community\; 2) community resilience\; and 3) collective efficacy--the belief that neighbors or groups of citizens can change their situations and be effective in organized community action.\n\nAll students (undergraduate\, graduate and professional) are invited to attend this powerful session!\n\nTo be true to healing justice\, it’s vital to highlight its origins. The movement was originally created by queer folx\, BIPOC\, women and those with disabilities starting from the 60s with a resurgence in the late 2000s. U-M participants will learn ways of healing “a sense of brokenness or disconnection that may be a result of trauma\, oppressive socio-cultural narratives and practices or the ways in which humans may lose touch with each other and themselves.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Reputation Building under Obervational Learning
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nI study a social learning model where a sequence of myopic players observe their predecessors’ actions as well as some private signals\, and then forecast the behavior of a strategic long-run player. A sequence of buyers interact with a patient seller\, who is either a strategic type or a commitment type that plays the optimal commitment action in every period. When each buyer observes all previous buyers’ actions and a bounded subset of the seller’s past actions\, there exist equilibria in which the patient seller receives his minmax payoff since the speed of learning goes to zero as the seller becomes patient. When each buyer observes all previous buyers’ actions and an unboundedly informative private signal about the seller’s current-period action\, the speed of learning is bounded away from zero and a patient seller receives at least his optimal commitment payoff in all equilibria.\n\nTo join the seminar\, please contact at econ.theory-requests@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Cognitive Science Foundations & Frontiers Speaker Series: Universalization: philosophical origins and cognitive applications
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sydney Levine is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT and the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. She will give two presentations on March 5 as part of the Foundations & Frontiers Speaker Series.\n\nSchedule\n3:00 pm - 3:30 pm Foundations Presentation \n3:30 pm - 3:45 pm Q & A\n—5 minute break—\n3:50 pm - 4:40 pm Frontiers Presentation \n4:40 pm - 5:05 pm Q & A\n\nTitle: \nUniversalization: philosophical origins and cognitive applications\n\nAbstract:\nSome people think it is immoral not to vote\, but why? Current theories of moral psychology — based largely on outcomes\, rules\, or affect — have trouble explaining this intuition. After all\, one vote typically makes no difference in the overall outcome of an election. Moreover\, there is not necessarily a rule or norm that mandates voting. And the thought of not voting isn’t particularly emotionally charged. Rather\, I propose that moral judgments in cases like this arise out of the logic of universalization — essentially the process of asking “what if everyone did that?” \n\nThe logic of universalization is well-known to moral philosophers\, appearing in the theories of Kant\, RM Hare\, George Singer\, TM Scanlon and others. In the Foundations section of this talk\, I will introduce the concept of universalization and explore how and why it has been used so effectively in moral philosophy. In the Frontiers section of the talk\, I will demonstrate how I have used this philosophical concept as a starting place for a model of moral cognition. I will define a computational model of universalization and show how it predicts subject judgments with quantitative precision. In addition\, developmental work suggests that universalization may even be used by children as young as 4. Finally\, I will end by showing how universalization may be the key to a unified theory of moral cognition.\n\nAbout the Series\nThe Foundations & Frontiers Speaker Series brings leading cognitive scientists to U-M (virtually) to present a special pair of presentations on the same day. The first presentation serves as an introduction to an important theoretical idea or method in the field -- the Foundations. The second presentation concerns the application of that idea or method to an innovative topic\, thus exploring the Frontiers of the field in a way that highlights the significance of the theoretical idea.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Probing Earth’s Near-Surface Structure: Measure the Angle\, Not the Timing
DESCRIPTION:Improving knowledge of near‐surface structure—i.e.\, structure of the shallowest crust\, <1 km—is crucial to numerous areas of Earth science\, including seismic-hazard assessment\, earthquake science\, and diverse surface processes.  However\, constraining near-surface structure remains challenging\, as conventional seismic tomography techniques have poor sensitivity and resolution at shallow depths.  Drilling or local seismic surveys are performed to image the near surface but provide extremely limited coverage of sites worldwide.  In this talk\, I introduce a new computationally-efficient algorithm that determines near-surface seismic wave speeds.  The algorithm is based on theory that relates the seismic wave speed to the orientation of arriving seismic waves.  Applying this method\, I generate maps of shear and compressional wave speeds for Japan\, using seismic data recorded by the High-Sensitivity Seismograph Network.  The maps show that sedimentary basins and mountainous regions are characterized by low and high wave speeds\, respectively.  Wave speeds also vary with thermal features\, such as volcanos\, and geological units of different ages.  Furthermore\, I obtain wave speeds for different depths by analyzing different frequencies.  Lastly\, I apply the frequency-dependent analysis to the United States to explore structure from tens of meters to several kilometers\, bridging the gap between the Earth’s surface and deep tomographic images.  This versatile technique can serve as a new path to reliable and non-invasive shallow seismic imaging and hazard assessment at any part of the world with a single seismic instrument.  It can also provide a means of monitoring changes within the very upper crust caused by volcanic or hydrological processes.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Jad Abumrad: Making “Dolly Parton’s America”
DESCRIPTION:Jad Abumrad is the host and creator of Radiolab\, a public radio program broadcast on nearly 600 stations across the nation and downloaded more than 12 million times a month as a podcast. Abumrad employs his dual backgrounds as composer and journalist to create what’s been called “a new aesthetic” in broadcast journalism. He orchestrates dialogue\, music\, interviews\, and sounds into compelling documentaries that draw listeners into investigations of otherwise intimidating topics\, such as the nature of numbers\, the evolution of altruism\, or the legal foundation for the war on terror. He’s won three George Foster Peabody Awards\, and in 2011 Abumrad was honored as a MacArthur Fellow (also known as the Genius Grant).\n\nThe MacArthur Foundation website says: “Abumrad is inspiring boundless curiosity within a new generation of listeners and experimenting with sound to find ever more effective and entertaining ways to explain ideas and tell a story.”\n\nAbumrad also created and hosted three seasons of More Perfect\, a series about untold stories of the Supreme Court\, which The New York Times called “...possibly the most mesmerizing podcast.” And in 2019\, along with OSM Audio’s Shima Oliaee\, Jad Abumrad created Dolly Parton’s America\, a Peabody Award-winning 9-part series that explores a divided America through the life and music of one its greatest icons. Alongside his radio work\, Abumrad continues to work as a composer and remixer and is currently hosting a radio show on Apple Music.\n\nFor this speaker series event\, Abumrad will be in conversation with Chris Azzopardi\, editor of Q Syndicate\, the national LGBTQ wire service serving LGBTQ publications across the United States. Azzopardi is also a contributor to The New York Times and has written for Vanity Fair\, GQ\, Billboard\, and Oprah Magazine. His 2014 interview with Dolly Parton was published in an anthology of interviews spanning her life and career\, entitled Dolly on Dolly: Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton. Over the course of Azzopardi’s career\, he has interviewed musicians\, actors\, allies\, and icons including Beyoncé\, Meryl Streep\, Lady Gaga\, and Mariah Carey. Locally\, his stories are published in Michigan&#39\;s LGBTQ newspaper Between The Lines.\n\nOur 2020-2021 Series is brought to you with the support of our streaming partners\, Detroit Public Television and PBS Books.\n\nHow to WatchAll events will be webcast on Fridays at 8pm (ET) at http://pennystampsevents.org and https://dptv.org/pennystamps.
