SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘You Will Die at Twenty'”\n \n About the movie:\n NYTimes Critics Pick! Winner of the Lion of the Future Award for best Debut Feature at the Venice Film Festival\, YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY is visually sumptuous “coming-of-death” fable. During her son’s naming ceremony\, a Sheikh predicts that Sakina’s child will die at the age of 20. Haunted by this prophecy\, Sakina becomes overly protective of her son Muzamil\, who grows up knowing about his fate. As Muzamil escapes Sakina’s ever-watchful eye\, he encounters friends\, ideas and challenges that make him question his destiny. Sudan’s first Oscar submission\, YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY is an auspicious debut and a moving meditation on what it means to live in the present.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Political Power of Optimism
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed\n\nWe are in a historical moment when longstanding social problems have taken on new urgency. The Black Lives movement and the Me Too movement emerged out of decade-long frustrations with the persistence of deep racial and gender inequalities. How do we understand the political possibilities for overcoming durable forms of social inequalities? The talk draws on core ideas from sociology to consider the political power of optimism and voice in driving social reform efforts. \n\nPresenter Sandra R. Levitsky is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and \nAssociate Professor of Sociology. She holds a Ph.D.in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin and a J.D. from the University of\nMinnesota. Her research focuses on American social policy\, political mobilization\, and relationship between law and social change. Her book\, Caring for our Own: Why There is No Political Demand for New \nAmerican Social Welfare Rights\, examines the politics of long- term care. Her current research examines the changing legal environment around Title IX and campus sexual assault. \n\nThis is the seventh of ten lectures to be presented once each month from September 2020 through June\,2021. The next lecture will be held April 13\, 2021. The title is: What the First Amendment Really Means. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you a few days prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar \"Where models meet morality: What role should complexity science play in addressing racial and socioeconomic disparities in the COVID-19 crisis?\"
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: Socioeconomic and racial inequalities in infection and mortality have been key features of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. While identifying these disparities is critical\, it has also become clear that we lack the theoretical and methodological tools to integrate the mechanisms generating these inequities into models of infectious disease transmission. This is a huge gap\, as such models have become key tools in developing policy and evaluating the impact of interventions ranging from social distancing to vaccination. In this talk\, I will outline some of the work done by my research group that is focused on understanding the mechanistic drivers of spatial and socioeconomic variation in infection and death from SARS-CoV-2 in Michigan (see e.g. covidmapping.org) and conduct a walk-through of an interactive example of a model that attempts to integrate a key driver of infection inequality - residential segregation - into a model of infectious disease transmission. For more information\, please visit our lab group site at epibayes.io.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: neuronal regulation of pre-sleep behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe transition from wakefulness to sleep requires a striking alteration in brain activity and behavior. Animals shift from actively responding to and interacting with the environment to a quiescent state in which they are less responsive to the environment and their brain activity shows different oscillatory patterns. How do animals achieve this remarkable wake-to-sleep transition? Prior to sleep onset\, animals ranging from bees to humans display a stereotypic repertoire of behaviors. These include finding a safe location\, performing hygiene-related behaviors\, preparing a space in which to sleep\, and adopting a sleeping posture. It has been suggested that the pre-sleep phase is a transitional phase in which engaging in a specific behavioral repertoire de-arouses the brain and facilitates the transition from wakefulness to sleep\, yet causal evidence for this premise is lacking. In this talk\, I will describe our lab’s recent work to fill this knowledge gap.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Cultural Mediations in the Great Wall Frontier: The Southern Xiongnu in Northern China
DESCRIPTION:The Great Wall regions of northern China have long been characterized as frontiers of political and cultural expansion in which steppe groups were acculturated and assimilated into Chinese society. Yet examinations of individual communities and persons in the frontier demonstrate overarching vacillations of political sovereignties and varied mélanges of cultural practices. This lecture engages historical and archaeological discussions of the Southern Xiongnu (ca.50-200 CE) as one example of local leaders who navigated their presence between exterior competing regimes through a suite of hybrid cultural mediations to successfully maintain independent political power.\n \n Bryan K. Miller received a MA in Archaeology from UCLA and a PhD in East Asian Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania. His research investigates the history and archaeology of early empires in East Asia\, focusing on intrapolity social and economic developments that occurred over the course of large polities as well as the interaction between regimes of Mongolia and China. His publications include studies of political substrata and the roles of local elites in regional polities\, alternate models of interaction for frontier matrices of cultures in contact\, functions and configurations of urban settings\, and the interplay between local politics and larger processes of globalization. He is currently completing a book manuscript on the Xiongnu Empire for Oxford University Press.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n\nZoom webinar\; attendance requires registration: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9qILPj9MQa6RuEtKpxd_9g

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Aerospace Engineering Department Seminar: Parametric Design and Isogeometric Modeling for Complex Engineering Applications
DESCRIPTION:Emily L. Johnson\nGraduate Research Assistant\nDepartment of Mechanical Engineering\nIowa State University\n\nAmong many global engineering challenges\, two pressing concerns for current and future generations are healthcare and renewable energy production. In particular\, cardiac health and wind energy are difficult or prohibitive to study experimentally due to the scale\, cost\, and accessibility of the structures. With such complex engineering problems\, computational methods provide a suitable alternative to empirical scientific investigation. One challenge associated with computational modeling arises from converting computer-aided design models into a suitable format for traditional analysis methods. When isogeometric analysis (IGA) was originally proposed\, it addressed this disconnect by incorporating the same representation of the geometry model for both design and analysis. While IGA has been proven to be an efficient method to facilitate the transition from design to analysis\, additional strategies are often necessary when simulating complicated structures using IGA. The presented methods address fundamental challenges related to isogeometric modeling for complex engineering applications and demonstrate effective simulation approaches for multi-component heart valves and wind turbine blades. A framework for parametric design and analysis of tricuspid valves demonstrates the advantages of innovative parameter-based modeling techniques and a coupled design-to-analysis approach that can be applied to many engineering problems\, including aerospace and wind turbine structures.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nEmily L. Johnson is a Ph.D. Candidate in Mechanical Engineering and the Wind Energy Science\, Engineering\, and Policy program at Iowa State University. She received her Bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics from St. Olaf College in 2016. At Iowa State\, Emily has worked on numerous projects related to isogeometric analysis and computational mechanics for wind turbine blade and heart valve applications. In 2019\, Emily received the Graduate College Research Excellence Award in Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State\, and she recently received an award for the best presentation by a female graduate student at the 14th World Congress in Computational Mechanics and ECCOMAS Congress. Emily's primary research interests are in parametric modeling and computational mechanics\, emphasizing computational design and engineering for aerospace structures\, wind energy\, and biomedical applications.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LACS Indigenous Languages Program Event. Action Research and the Participatory Construction of Knowledge in 1970s Colombia
DESCRIPTION:Register at https://myumi.ch/3q00K\n\nLecture presented by Joanne Rappaport\, Professor of Latin American Literature and Cultural Studies\, Georgetown University\n \nDiscussant: Laura Pensa\, PhD Candidate\, Romance Languages & Literatures\, U-M\n \nIn the early 1970s\, sociologist Orlando Fals Borda combined sociological and historical research with a firm commitment to grassroots social movements in collaboration with the National Association of Peasant Users on the Atlantic coast of Colombia. The presentation examines the development of participatory action research\, highlighting Fals Borda's rejection of traditional positivist research frameworks in favor of sharing his own authority as a researcher with peasant activists and preparing accessible materials for a campesino readership\, thereby transforming research into a political organizing tool. The fundamental concepts of participatory action research as they were framed by Fals Borda continue to be relevant to engaged social scientists and other researchers in Latin America and beyond.\n \nJoanne Rappaport is a professor of Latin American cultural studies and anthropology at Georgetown University. An anthropologist pursuing dual lines of research in ethnographic history and collaborative ethnography\, she previously looked at the role of literacy and historical memory in indigenous activism in Colombia and at the emergence of indigenous intellectuals in Latin America. Her recent work centers on collaborative ethnography that draws equally on academic and nonacademic agendas\, theories\, and methods. She is the author of *The Disappearing Mestizo: Configuring Difference in the Colonial New Kingdom of Granada*\, *Beyond the Lettered City: Indigenous Literacies in the Andes\, and Intercultural Utopias: Public Intellectuals\, Cultural Experimentation\, and Ethnic Pluralism in Colombia*\, and *Cowards Don′t Make History: Orlando Fals Borda and the Origins of Participatory Action Research* all also published by Duke University Press.\n\n------\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Auditions:From Here to There: Rich Liverance’s Creative Career
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by artist and alumnus Stephanie Brown (MFA ‘18)\, From Here to There brings current Stamps students and Stamps alums together for honest and accessible conversations about the alumni’s creative career path.\n\nDesigned to help Stampers navigate their art and design careers\, these talks will reveal the “nuts and bolts” of how Stamps alums worked to find a home in their creative career. With a different alumni featured bi-monthly\, this live interview will be followed by a Q&A with students. BONUS: From Here to There participants will receive contact information for the alumni speaker\, who will welcome follow-up questions via email and/or social media. From Here to There is a great way for students to start their professional networking journey — and get the critical information they need to design their present and their future for the real world. About the Speaker: Rich Liverance\, Animation Editor for DreamWorks AnimationSeeing Monsters Inc. at 10 years old was a pivotal moment when Rich Liverance realized the career path he wanted to pursue. The excitement Rich felt watching such a compelling story had him jumping at every opportunity to create during his time in high school. After he graduated\, Rich spent four exciting and challenging years at University of Michigan’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design learning the ins and outs of animation\, storytelling and design. With the help and encouragement of the Stamps staff\, Rich was able to land an internship with Nickelodeon which led to his current job as an Animation Editor for DreamWorks Animation in Los Angeles. Every day Rich is excited knowing that he’s using his passion for animation to inspire the next generation of artists and creators.Stamps events are free and open to the public\, and we are committed to making them accessible to all attendees. SUMMARY:Well-being:Worthy Bodies
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events\n\nAll trans people are beautiful\, and that sentiment is not always expressed. In times of isolation and disconnect from community\, transgender and nonbinary individuals can lose sight of self-love and body positivity.\n\nIn Part 1\, we will explore the topic of body positivity through the lens of the wellbeing model. The workshop will focus on collectively building a more trans-inclusive idea of body positivity based on our experiences and identities. By incorporating other transgender and non-binary voices in the workshop\, the space will also explore what self-love looks like and how you can build a body-positive self-image.\n\nIn Part 2\, we will continue diving into how to cultivate a body-positive self-image. Through personal reflection and group conversations\, we will explore our own body origin stories and how body policing manifests within transgender and non-binary communities. With a focus on narratives and experiences\, the workshop will provide participants with strategies to reframe and cultivate body positivity for ourselves\, our relationships and our communities.\n\nAttendance for Part 1 isn't required for Part 2\, nor is it a commitment to attend Part 2. For both workshops\, participants are encouraged to wear an article of clothing\, accessory\, or outfit that validates your identity and expression.\n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event\, fill out our Event Accessibility Form\, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented\, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us.
