SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: You Will Die at Twenty
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘You Will Die at Twenty'”\n \n About the movie:\n NYTimes Critics Pick! Winner of the Lion of the Future Award for best Debut Feature at the Venice Film Festival\, YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY is visually sumptuous “coming-of-death” fable. During her son’s naming ceremony\, a Sheikh predicts that Sakina’s child will die at the age of 20. Haunted by this prophecy\, Sakina becomes overly protective of her son Muzamil\, who grows up knowing about his fate. As Muzamil escapes Sakina’s ever-watchful eye\, he encounters friends\, ideas and challenges that make him question his destiny. Sudan’s first Oscar submission\, YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY is an auspicious debut and a moving meditation on what it means to live in the present.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Loops and Trees in Generic 4d EFT up to operator dimension 8
DESCRIPTION:I will talk about the tree and one-loop behavior in a generic 4d EFT of massless scalars\, fermions\, and vectors\, with a particular eye to the high-energy limit of the Standard Model EFT at operator dimensions 6 and 8. First\, I will show how to classify the possible Lorentz structures of operators and the subset of these that can arise at tree-level in a weakly coupled UV completion. Then I will show how operators contribute to tree and one-loop helicity amplitudes\, exploring the impact of non-renormalization theorems through dimension 8 and helicity selection rules through the full one loop amplitude.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Psychology Brown Bag:
DESCRIPTION:Soyeon\n\nTitle:\nCollege kids vs. the world: What differentially predicted social distancing behavior for college students and the general population early in the COVID-19 pandemic\n\nAbstract:\nSocial distancing is critical in preventing COVID-19\, which mainly spreads among people who come in close contact. Public health authorities have encouraged social distancing and provided guidance on how to effectively keep your distance. However\, there is wide variation in the extent to which someone follows the recommendations to limit physical contact with others. In this talk\, I will examine what predicts social distancing behavior (a) across different populations (college students vs. community members) and (b) across time\, mainly focusing on how being informed about COVID-19 versus being emotionally threatened about COVID-19 predicts social distancing behaviors.\n\nJulia\n\nTitle:\nBad is More Specific Than Good\n \nAbstract:\nPrevious research suggests that \"bad is stronger than good\" in the sense that negative stimuli and events are more psychologically impactful than their positive counterparts. In this talk\, I will present evidence that bad is also more specific than good. In four studies\, we found that when we asked participants rated their dislikes and challenges as being more specific than their likes and advantages.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Terribly Close: Polish Vernacular Artists Face the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Can inanimate objects store and communicate traumatic memory that cannot be directly expressed? This talk examines 'folk art' made by non-professional Polish artists – many of them village laborers – documenting the German Nazi occupation of Poland and the Holocaust. Made largely in the 1960s and 70s\, these objects are uncanny: at times deeply moving\, at others grotesque\, they can also be disturbing for the ways they impose Catholic idioms on Jewish suffering\, or upend accepted roles of victim\, perpetrator\, and bystander.\n\nZoom webinar - please register here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6-Sy-1p-TFaoBD7VbWgcMA

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Webinar | Artist Spotlight Stories: Oksana Mirzoyan
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance to receive the short film links and to attend the discussion:\n\nhttps://myumi.ch/r8gD2\n\n For nearly a decade\, the art of Oksana Mirzoyan has been exploring the social and cultural experiences of the Nagorno-Karabagh conflict. The territorial engagement\, which began in the 1980s and unfolded across Armenia\, Azerbaijan\, and Nagorno-Karabagh was the catalyst for a sequence of pogroms leveled against Armenians living in major cities of the former Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic\, from Sumgait to Kirovabad (Ganja) and in 1990\, the capital city of Baku.\n \n The conflict had a massive influence not only on the cultural and political geography of the South Caucasus but continues to shape the everyday experience of people living in the region today as well as generations of displaced Armenians and Azerbaijanis. Among the millions forced to evacuate the region\, thousands arrived in the United States\, concentrating in urban and suburban communities\, including in Detroit and surrounding Southeast Michigan. Born in Baku\, Mirzoyan arrived in Detroit with her family as a result of the Nagorno-Karabagh conflict.\n \n Mirzoyan’s research into the war starts with her passport photo as a refugee being granted asylum in the US in 1991. This discussion will include a screening of her short experimental works that use archival family footage (“Baku 1977”) and capture sceneries or people's lives in the city of Shushi (Swallows flying in the city of Shushi\; \"Barber of Shushi\"). Her intimate knowledge of the region comes from her first-hand experience of walking on its minefields with Halo Trust\, teaching filmmaking to students in Stepanakert (the capital city of Artsakh)\, and collecting the stories of its citizens. Much of Mirzoyan's art is an exploration of the filmmaker's personal trauma tied to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabagh/Artsakh and presents a journey of healing her past through her relationship with the country.\n \nOksana Mirzoyan is an Armenian-American artist focused on narrative filmmaking as a writer\, director\, and producer. Mirzoyan’s films have screened and been awarded internationally at festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand\, Camerimage\, and Locarno. Her short film“140 Drams\" was an honoree of the Cinematographer’s Guild of America and won Best Short Film at Izmir Film Festival. Mirzoyan is based in Detroit where she is a Kresge Artist Fellow. Her experimental and narrative short films \"140 Drams\,\" \"Sonnet\,\" and \"Susanna\" were screened in a solo exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Currently\, she is working on her first feature\, \"Abysm\" which explores the ongoing conflict in Nagorno-Karabagh. The film has won Locarno Film Festival’s Open Doors Prize\, along with support from the George Foundation. Mirzoyan has been recently experimenting with sculpture and installation work.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Shining a Light on the Complex Physics of Low-temperature Plasmas
DESCRIPTION:The seminar is free and open to the public.\nTo request the Zoom link\, please send an email to:\nmipse-central@umich.edu\n\nAbstract:\nResearch into low-temperature plasmas (LTPs) is a thriving area\, stimulated not only by the range of applications of LTP devices\, but also by the richness and complexity of the physical phenomena which have in recent years become evident in such plasmas - instabilities and self-organization\, for example. Understanding such phenomena offers a means of optimizing the performance of existing devices\, while also guiding the development of next-generation sources. Such objectives are challenging and will require a combination of advanced numerical\, theoretical\, and experimental approaches\, many of which are still under development. \n \nNew experimental approaches applied to LTPs can offer insights into aspects such as particle properties and dynamics\, which may be inaccessible to conventional diagnostics. In recent years\, highly-sensitive coherent and incoherent Thomson scattering implementations have been achieved for magnetized LTPs\, providing evidence for\, and information on\, instabilities implicated in anomalous transport\, and new access to electron properties. In this talk\, recent insights gained from Thomson scattering in such plasmas will be discussed\, with illustrations of how dialogue between experiments\, theory and numerical simulations have improved current understanding.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Sedina Tsikata is a researcher with the CNRS\, the French National Center for Scientific Research\, working at the ICARE laboratory in Orléans\, France. She received undergraduate and graduate degrees from\, respectively\, MIT and Ecole Polytechnique\, and her postdoctoral research was funded by the French Space Agency. Her main research focuses on understanding phenomena in magnetized plasmas via the development and application of new diagnostics. Dr. Tsikata has received recognitions from the French Physics Society (Prix René Pellat) and from the CNRS (Médaille de Bronze).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Motivation and Identity as Signals of Systemic Problems in Engineering Education
DESCRIPTION:There is a well-documented history of systemic engineering education problems ranging from a persistently chilly climate to a burgeoning mental health crisis. Outcomes of these problems include but are not limited to increased attrition\, decreased learning\, and reduced engineering innovation resulting from a homogenous engineering population. While these measures provide concrete evidence of systemic problems\, they do not provide clear targets for change or an early warning system of how systemic problems influence students before crucial decision points. \n\nTo address the limitations of existing engineering education outcome measures\, measures of how students internalize engineering experiences are needed. Students' motivations for engineering tasks and identifications as engineers can fill this gap as they are contextually responsive and connected to educational outcomes such as deep learning\, student retention\, and task persistence. Additionally\, students' educational experiences directly influence their motivations and identities. \n\nInformed by specific theories of motivation and identity (future time perspective and engineering role identity\, respectively)\, this presentation describes how students' motivations and identities are shaped by their engineering education experiences and shape engineering education cultures. Specifically\, I will discuss the homogenization of undergraduates' motivations and identities\; the connections between motivation and identity and experiences of discrimination and bias\; and the identity and motivationally undermining experiences of engineering graduate students. I will conclude by discussing actionable steps to shift engineering education defaults to foster students' motivations and identities.\n\nBiographical Sketch: Dr. Adam Kirn is an Associate Professor of Engineering Education in the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Nevada\, Reno. His research focuses on the ways students' motivations and identities shape and are shaped by their engineering education experiences. The results of this work seek to implement evidence-based practices to create educational defaults that foster student success and thriving. Adam has a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology\, an M.S. in Bioengineer\, and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education from Clemson University.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CCMB / DCMB Weekly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Single-cell technologies have transformed biomedical research in the last few years. With single-cell sequencing\, we can now simultaneously measure thousands of genomics features in a large number of cells\, which provides an ultrahigh resolution phenotypic map for each individual. However\, single-cell protocols are complex. Even with the most sensitive platforms\, the data are often sparse and noisy. Recent development of single-cell multi-omics and spatial transcriptomics technologies further imposed additional challenges on data integration. In this talk\, I will present several machine learning methods that my group recently developed for single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data analysis. I will discuss methods for simultaneous denoising\, clustering and batch effect correction\, single-cell multi-omics data integration\, identification of spatially variable genes\, generation of super-resolution gene expression\, and inference of cell type distribution in spatial transcriptomics. I will illustrate our methods by showing results from ongoing collaborations on cardiometabolic disease and applications to brain and cancer data.\n* * *\nBiography: Dr. Li’s research interests include statistical genetics and genomics\, bioinformatics\, and computational biology. The central theme of her current research is to use statistical and computational approaches to understand cellular heterogeneity in human-disease-relevant tissues\, to characterize gene expression diversity across cell types\, to study the patterns of cell state transition and crosstalk of various cells using data generated from single-cell and spatial transcriptomics studies\, and to translate these findings to the clinics. In addition to methods development\, Dr. Li is also interested in collaborating with researchers seeking to identify complex disease susceptibility genes and acting cell types. She is Director of Biostatistics for the Gene Therapy Program at Penn\, where she advises biostatistics and bioinformatics analysis for various gene therapy studies. She is also Chair of the Graduate Program in Biostatistics. Dr. Li actively serves in the scientific community. She served as a regular member for the NIH Genomics\, Computational Biology and Technology (GCAT) study section for 6 years\, and the NHGRI Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR) for 3 years. She is an Associate Editor of Annals of Applied Statistics\, Statistics in Biosciences\, PLOS Computational Biology\, and Human Genetics and Genomics Advances. She is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MCAIM Colloquium | Slowly Chaotic Behavior
DESCRIPTION:How can we understand chaotic behavior mathematically? A well popularized feature of chaotic systems is the butterfly effect: a small variation of initial conditions may lead to a drastically different future evolution\, a mechanism at the base of the so-called 'deterministic chaos'. We will introduce and focus on 'slowly chaotic' dynamical systems'\, for which the butterfly effect happens \"slowly\" (e.g. at polynomial speed). These include many fundamental examples coming from physics\, such as the Ehrenfest billiard and the Novikov model of electrons in a metal. In the talk we will survey some of the recent advances in our understanding of their typical chaotic features as well as common mechanisms for chaos.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michael Beauregard Seminar in Macroeconomics: International Spillovers and Local Credit Cycle
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis paper studies the transmission of the Global Financial Cycle (GFC) to domestic credit market conditions in a large emerging market\, Turkey\, over 2003-13. We use administrative data covering the universe of corporate credit transactions matched to bank balance sheets\nto document four facts: (1) an easing in global financial conditions leads to lower borrowing costs and an increase in local lending\; (2) domestic banks more exposed to international capital markets transmit the GFC locally\; (3) the fall in local currency borrowing costs is larger than foreign currency borrowing costs due to the comovement of the uncovered interest rate parity (UIP) premium with the GFC over time\; (4) data on posted collateral for new loan issuances show that collateral constraints do not relax during the boom phase of the GFC.\n*To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu
