SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Environmental Justice Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Esme G. Murdock\n\nEsme G. Murdock received her Ph.D. in the Department of Philosophy at Michigan State University\, and is an Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the Pennsylvania State University for the 2020-2021 Academic Year.\n\nHer research interests include environmental justice\, Indigenous and Afro-descended environmental ethics\, settler colonial theory\, and decolonization as land/resource rematriation. Murdock comes to this work as a descendant of enslaved Africans and settlers in North America. Her current work explores the devastating impacts of colonization and slavery on both Indigenous and Afro-descended peoples and environments on Turtle Island. She anchors her understanding of settler colonialism\, in particular\, in the experiences and theorization of Native and Black communities\, especially toward securing decolonial futures. She often writes back to mainstream environmental discourse that attempts to “read out” colonization as the context of environmental degradation and destruction\, particularly in the settler colonies of the United States and Canada. Her work centers conceptions of land and relating to land found within both Indigenous and African American/Afro-descended environmental philosophies. Murdock has work published in Environmental Values\, Global Ethics\, Hypatia\, Agricultural and Environmental Ethics\, and World Philosophies. Murdock’s first book manuscript is a land history of the South Carolina Sea Coast that engages in the diverse and often erased ecological histories\, ecological heritages\, ethnobotanical knowledges\, and complex relations of Indigenous and Afro-descended peoples within the colonial complex of multiple European powers.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:FAST Lecture | Engraving One’s Name in the Wadi Hammamat Quarries: From Spatial Dynamics to Visual Discourses
DESCRIPTION:Located halfway between the Nile and the Red Sea\, Wadi Hammamat is the modern name given to a section of this ancient Eastern Desert road where greywacke and siltstone quarries were exploited from the Predynastic period onward. In addition to a current project which aims to (re)edit the rich epigraphic material uncovered in situ\, approximately 400 pre-Late Period inscriptions\, this corpus has recently been re-explored in terms of writing practices. Through a multidimensional perspective\, Vincent Morel will give some new insights into what these engravings “tell” beyond the strictly linguistic level. Focusing on the Old Kingdom material (3rd millennium BCE)\, he will make use of an original heuristic approach\, associating material\, visual\, and (inter[icono])textual investigations\, to better understand the intelligibility of the writing act itself\, in a liminal place where the mere mortal could partake in the divine.\n\nPlease note\, this lecture takes place at 12 p.m. Eastern.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99474810409\n\nFAST lectures are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEMINAR: \"Optimizing the First Response to Sepsis: An Electronic Health Record-based Markov Decision Process Model for Personalizing Acute Care for Deteriorating Patients\" — Julie Simmons Ivy
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nTitle:\nOptimizing the First Response to Sepsis: An Electronic Health Record-based Markov Decision Process Model for Personalizing Acute Care for Deteriorating Patients\n\nAbstract:\nSepsis is considered a medical emergency where delays in initial treatment are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Sepsis affects more than 1.7 million Americans each year\, causing approximately 270\,000 deaths annually. One in three hospitalized patient deaths are associated with sepsis. In 2019\, the total cost of sepsis care for inpatient admission and skilled nursing facility admission was estimated at more than $62 billion. Sepsis is a significant healthcare challenge\, where the lack of a gold standard for diagnosis causes inconsistencies in categorizing sepsis phenotypes and accurately capturing patients’ trajectories\, which evolve stochastically over time. This makes treatment decision making and early intervention difficult. We integrate electronic health record (EHR) data with clinical expertise to develop a continuous-time Markov decision process model of the natural history of sepsis. We use this model to better understand the stochastic nature of patients’ health trajectories and determine the optimal treatment policy to minimize mortality and morbidity. Specifically\, the optimal health states for first anti-infective and first fluid are identified. We formulate this as a stopping problem in which the patient leaves the system when he or she receives the first treatment (intervention) and receives a lump sum reward. Our objective is to find the optimal first intervention for health states to minimize expected mortality and morbidity. We explore the effect of the complex trade-offs associated with the intervention costs and patient disposition costs which are subjective and difficult to estimate. Our model captures the natural progression along sepsis trajectory using a clinically defined treatment delayed population. The model translates observations of patient health as defined by vitals and laboratory results recorded during hospitalization in the EHR to capture the complex evolution of sepsis within a patient population. This framework provides key insights into sepsis patients’ stochastic trajectories and informs clinical decision making associated with caring for these patients as their health dynamically evolves.\n\nBio:\nJulie Simmons Ivy is a Professor in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Fitts Faculty Fellow in Health Systems Engineering. She previously spent several years on the faculty of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. She received her B.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. She also received her M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a focus on Operations Research at Georgia Tech. She is a President of the Health Systems Engineering Alliance (HSEA) Board of Directors. She is an active member of the Institute of Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS)\, Dr. Ivy served as the 2007 Chair (President) of the INFORMS Health Applications Society and the 2012 – 13 President for the INFORMS Minority Issues Forum. Her research interests are mathematical modeling of stochastic dynamic systems with emphasis on statistics and decision analysis as applied to health care\, public health\, and humanitarian logistics. This research has made an impact on how researchers and practitioners address complex societal issues\, such as health disparities\, public health preparedness\, hunger relief\, student performance\, and personalized medical decision-making and has been funded by AHRQ\, CDC\, NSF\, Clinton Health Access Initiative\, and the UNC Cancer Center.

In recent years\, following the discovery of water jets spewing out of Saturn’s icy moon\, Enceladus\, numerous efforts have been undertaken to look for plume activity at Europa. Data that have been analyzed so far include telescopic observations covering a wide range of wavelengths as well as in situ data acquired by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft that conducted multiple close flybys of the moon during its mission. Signatures of putative water plumes have indeed been identified in Hubble Space Telescope images and a re-analysis of the Galileo magnetic field and plasma wave data suggests that the spacecraft passed through a plume during its closest encounter with Europa. In this presentation we will review current evidence of plumes on Europa and discuss various challenges encountered in the search for plume activity. We will also provide an outlook for future missions to the Jupiter system\, such as the Europa Clipper and JUICE missions\, that will offer new opportunities for probing plume activity at Europa.\n\nPlease join us!

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Challenges Predicting the Lifetime of Hall Effect Thrusters
DESCRIPTION:Mitchell L. R. Walker\nSchool of Aerospace Engineering\nHigh-Power Electric Propulsion Laboratory\nGeorgia Institute of Technology\n\nElectric propulsion devices are rapidly replacing traditional chemical rockets on spacecraft. Electric propulsion devices possess a combination of high specific impulse and high thrust efficiency that drastically reduce the mass of propellant required to perform a specific mission. Satellite operators leverage these characteristics to reduce the mass\, size\, and launch cost of a spacecraft while maintaining its payload capability. The drawback of electric propulsion is that the thrust level is limited by the electrical power available on the spacecraft. Thus\, the required operational life of electric propulsion devices is thousands of hours.\n\nThe Hall effect thruster (HET) is a type of electric propulsion routinely flown on spacecraft. Currently\, HET development requires expensive\, high-risk\, ground-based qualification tests that exceed 7\,000 hours to demonstrate the necessary on-orbit lifetime. To date\, modeling efforts have been unable to predict the dominant failure mechanism observed in HET qualification tests. In particular\, how quickly does the accelerated plasma erode the ceramic HET discharge channel?\n\nThis presentation discusses an AFOSR-sponsored effort to develop a fundamental understanding of how the HET discharge plasma erodes the ceramic discharge channel. This knowledge will facilitate our ability to predict HET lifetime and will influence the design of future high-power HETs.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nMitchell L. R. Walker is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies at Georgia Tech. His primary research interests include experimental and theoretical studies of advanced plasma propulsion concepts for spacecraft. Dr. Walker received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2004. His research activities include Hall thrusters\, gridded ion engines\, diagnostics for plasma interrogation and thruster characterization\, vacuum facility effects\, helicon plasma sources\, and plasma-material interactions. He has authored 130 journal articles and conference papers in the fields of electric propulsion and plasma physics.\n\nDr. Walker serves as the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Deputy Director for Space Rockets and Advanced Propulsion and as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets. He is also a consultant to the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Walker delivered expert witness testimony to the Space Subcommittee - House of Representatives\, Washington\, D.C. to help guide national investments in electric propulsion technology. Dr. Walker is a recipient of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Program Award\, the AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award\, the AIAA Sustained Service Award\, and the Georgia Power Professor of Excellence Award.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Labor\, Love\, & Loss: Black Women's Networks of Care in the Transition from Slavery to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores themes from a new book project that considers Black women’s reproductive care work in the face of miscarriage\, infant and child loss\, elder care\, and sickness. Although this is a book about loss\, it is also a book about survival. Professor Simmons argues that during the transition from slavery to freedom\, Black mothers mobilized intergenerational and intersubjective connections with other women in their community to manage sickness\, take care of themselves and one another\, and mourn loss. \n\nLaKisha Simmons is associate professor in History and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on gendered experiences of racial violence and Black women and girls’ strategies for survival in the face of racism. She is the author of Crescent City Girls: The Lives of Young Black Women in Segregated New Orleans and currently at work on a collection called The Global History of Black Girlhood co-edited with Corinne Field. \n\nFree and open to the public. This is a remote event and will take place online via Zoom.\n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Vishwas Goel (Materials Science & Engineering) and Benjamin Yang (Biomedical Engineering)
DESCRIPTION:VISHWAS GOEL: Vishwas is a third year Ph.D. student in the Thornton group\, Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His research involves the simulations of the continuum level or microstructure level electrochemical dynamics of energy conversion/storage devices such as batteries\, fuel cells\, etc.\n\n\"SIMULATION OF EIS IN SOFC CATHODES USING SMOOTHED BOUNDARY METHOD\": Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is the most commonly used technique for the in-situ characterization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). In this presentation\, I will discuss about a method for simulating the impedance behavior of a mixed conducting SOFC cathode with an experimentally determined microstructure. I will also share the key insights that we generated through our work.\n\nBENJAMIN YANG: Ben is a 4th year PhD student in Dr. Carlos Aguilar’s Lab. His research explores the molecular mechanisms that regulate cellular fate plasticity using microfluidics\, cell-cell fusion\, and single-cell sequencing techniques.\n\n\"DECONSTRUCTING METASTATIC REGULATORS USING INTERSPECIES HETEROKARYONS\": Tumor metastasis\, the spread of cancer cells to sites beyond the primary tumor\, is the primary contributor to morbidity in cancer patients. While each step of the metastatic cascade is well characterized\, the molecular mechanisms responsible for initiating the cascade remain unclear\, inhibiting the efficacy of therapeutic modalities. We revisit a century-old hypothesis that changes in metastatic potential are conferred to tumor cells through fusion with neighboring stromal cells by fusing human breast cancer cells with brain-resident mouse microglia and astrocytes. Our main objectives are to assess how aberrant fusion between malignant cells and stromal cells overrides transcriptional safeguards against metastatic progression and to explore how fusion modifies the mechanical phenotype of tumor hybrids. Achieving these goals will advance our understanding of the biological significance of fusion events in metastasis and delineate markers that can serve as therapeutic targets.\n\nRegister to receive Zoom information: https://myumi.ch/dOA75

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Faith & Coming Out
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events\n\nSpectrum Center is proud to present Faith & Coming out: a student & parent panel on family\, community\, and loving yourself. Many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community have questions\, fears\, and hopes about how their queerness interacts with their faith\, but it's not a subject often talked about. In an effort to help our students understand themselves better\, we have brought together five people to share their stories about coming out or being come out to. There isn't one method to create a perfect harmony between an individual's religion and LGBTQ+ identity\, but highlighting more narratives can help reflect the many possible paths and make the journey just a little less uncertain.\n \nThis event's panelists come from the following religions: Buddhism\, Christianity\, Judaism\, and Catholicism.\n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Building Bridges in a Divided World : The role of Interfaith collaboration in justice work
DESCRIPTION:Join the Jewish Communal Leadership Program (JCLP) for a panel discussion about the transformative potential of interfaith work.\n \nIn the wake of a year shaped by a global pandemic\, protests for racial justice\, extreme political polarization\, and more\, so many in and outside the Jewish community are facing personal crises and family tragedies. Through it all\, we have seen communities respond to those in need by forming and expanding mutual aid networks\, advocating for comprehensive safety protocols and transparency\, highlighting inequalities\, and finding ways to stay connected in the midst of so much physical isolation. Faith-based and interfaith organizations have been uniquely positioned to offer support in this time.\nWe are so excited to explore this subject with five distinguished interfaith professionals:\n \nAziza Hazan\nExecutive Director of NewGround: A Muslim Jewish Partnership for Change\n \nReverend Amanda Henderson\nDirector of the Institute of Religion\, Politics & Culture at the Iliff School of Theology\,\nFormer Executive Director of the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado\n \nPastor Aramis Hinds\nExecutive Director of the Bethel Community Transformation Center and lead pastor at Breakers Covenant Church in Detroit\n \nRabbi Andrea London\nRabbi at Beth Emet in Chicago\nFormer Co-Chair of JCUA's Jewish-Muslim Community Building Initiative Advisory Committee\n \nRabbi Samuel L. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Heung Coalition Event | Empire's Afterlives: Legacies of Militarization and Cultural Politics in Korea
DESCRIPTION:Please register for this event here: \nhttps://myumi.ch/qgkxW\n \n In their article\, “Transpacific Entanglements\,” Yên Lê Espiritu\, Lisa Lowe\, and Lisa Yoneyama argue that “U. S. neoliberalism mediates itself through the U. S. national security state\, which is simultaneously a racial and a settler state\; this is expressed not merely in the racialization of the Asian and Pacific Islander peoples but significantly in the erasure of historical and ongoing settler colonialism and\, furthermore\, in a racial social order that simultaneously pronounces antiblackness and Islamophobia.” In the case of Korea\, such processes are evident in the ongoing division of the peninsula\, the presence of U. S. military bases\, and the praise for South Korea’s ascendency in the global capitalist order - even as this ascent remains contingent upon exploitation in other countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia.\n \n For this event\, we bring together E. Tammy Kim and Eunsong Kim to discuss these “transpacific entanglements” with U. S. neoliberalism\, militarization\, and racism that South Korea’s own position reveals. What are the legacies of militarism in Korea and how do they impact the everyday lives of Koreans within and outside the peninsula? What does South Korea’s position as a sub-empire reveal about the ways in which ongoing legacies of the Cold War affect the narratives around Asia and Asia America? How do such narratives manifest in the cultural politics of South Korea? How can we form transnational spaces to counter the results and norms of U. S. militarism and work towards building solidarity outside the parameters inscribed by U. S. militarism? Please join us on Thursday\, March 18\, 2021 at 7pm PST for this important and timely conversation between E. Tammy Kim and Eunsong Kim.\n \n ABOUT THE SPEAKERS\n \n Eunsong Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and an affiliate faculty of the department of Cultures\, Societies and Global Studies at Northeastern University. Her practice spans: poetry\, translation\, visual culture and critical race & ethnic studies. Her book project in progress\, \"The Politics of Collecting: Property & Race & Aesthetic Formations\" considers how legal conceptions of racialized property become foundational to avant-garde and modern understandings of innovation in the arts. Her essays have appeared in: \"Lateral: Journal of the Cultural Studies Association\,\" \"Journal of Critical Library and Information Studies\,\" and in the book anthologies\, \"Poetics of Social Engagement and Reading Modernism with Machines.\" Her poetry has appeared in the Brooklyn Magazine\, The Iowa Review\, Minnesota Review\, and P-Queue amongst others. Her first book of poetry\, \"gospel of regicide\,\" was published by Noemi Press in 2017\, and her co-translation (with Sung Gi Kim) of Kim Eon Hee’s poetic text \"Have You Been Feeling Blue These Days?\" was published in 2019. She is the recipient of the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, a grant from the Andy Warhol Art Writers Program\, and Yale’s Poynter Fellowship.\n \n E. Tammy Kim is a freelance reporter and essayist\, a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times\, and a co-host of the podcast Time to Say Goodbye. In 2016\, with Yale Professor Michael Veal\, she published Punk Ethnography\, a book about the politics of contemporary world music. She writes about the Koreas and labor and public goods in the U.S. for The New York Review of Books\, The Nation\, The New Yorker\, and many other outlets\, and previously worked at The New Yorkerand Al Jazeera America. Before pursuing a career in journalism\, Ms. Kim was a social justice attorney\, and she has been active in the U.S. labor movement. She is currently the 2021 James H. Ottaway Sr. visiting professor of journalism at SUNY New Paltz.\n \n Co-sponsored by the Heung Coalition\, the Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan and the Center for Korean Studies at UC Berkeley.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at youngkch@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
