SUMMARY:Film Screening:Korean Cinema NOW | Peninsula/ 반도
DESCRIPTION:Access the film through the Michigan Theater here (customer pre-registration required): https://www.michtheater.org/2021-korean-cinema-now/\n\n2020 | 116 Minutes | Yeon Sang-ho\n\nFree | Open to the public | In Korean with English subtitles\n\n“Yeon isn’t always served by the large scale of “Peninsula.” Its climactic battle is overlong and wearingly self-indulgent\, which is often the case in blowouts where a budgetarily emboldened director piles on the mayhem\, mistaking bigger and noisier violence for excitement. In the end\, what is most striking about the movie is its pervasive sense of loss — of family\, of country — and the dystopian vision of a new normal in which ordinary people are reduced to hunters and the hunted. Here\, after the gunfire dies down\, terror at times gives way to a melancholy that can be quite affecting even if the message remains familiar: We have met the zombie\, and it is us.” – Manohla Dargis\, New York Times\n\nKorean Cinema NOW 2021 will be presented through a virtual format. Attendees should visit the Michigan Theater website to register for the film on the screening dates. Once registered with a customer account\, attendees will receive a confirmation with a link to view the film. This video link will only be available for 72 hours from the time you press play. You can watch as much or little as you like during that time. After these 72 hours\, even if not yet finished\, the link will become inactive. SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series: Yizao Wang\, Associate Professor\, Mathematical Sciences Department\, University of Cincinnati
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk I will go over a few recent examples of stationary sequences\, of which the extremes form long-range clustering. The phenomena of clustering of extremes have been extensively investigated in the literature since 1980s. However\, for most examples the extremal clustering occurs only locally. That is\, the locations of extremes within each cluster are bounded and shrink to a single point at the macroscopic level after normalization. For long-range clustering\, on the other hand\, the locations of extremes within each cluster are unbounded\, and they can be further characterized by a random closed set in the scaling limit. \n\nThere are two classes of models that recently have been shown to exhibit the phenomena of long-range clustering of extremes. One is the Karlin model\, which this talk will focus on. The other is the so-called stable-regenerative model\, of which if time permits I will highlight briefly some key features. \n\nBased on joint works with Olivier Durieu (Université de Tours\, France) and Gennady Samorodnitsky (Cornell University\, USA). \n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed via Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/94350208889 There will be a virtual reception to follow

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:“Molecular logic of immune cell movement and activation”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Our lab seeks to define the molecular logic of complex cell behaviors—how cells go from sets of interacting molecules to the emergent properties of living systems. In this talk I will focus on two recent discoveries from our group: (1) how immune cells integrate substrate topology with cell movement based on some surprising biophysical properties of an actin regulator\, and (2) how T cells use ligand binding kinetics to discriminate self from non-self\, as we reveal with a light-regulatable T-cell receptor. \n Neutrophils are workhorses of your innate immune system and are programmed to migrate to sites of injury and infection. This requires them to integrate both chemical cues (such as soluble guidance cues) as well as mechanical cues (such as finding pores in dense collagen meshworks). How these cells coordinate their shape and movement with their external environment is not well understood. We recently discovered that a key actin regulator integrates substrate topology with cell movement by acting as a link between cell polarity and substrate-induced curvature of the plasma membrane. I will cover some of the surprising biophysical features of this actin regulator that enable this integration to occur.\n To detect rare antigenic peptides in a sea of self-peptide\, T cells are thought to convert small changes in ligand binding half-life to large changes in cell activation. Such a kinetic proofreading model has been difficult to test directly\, as we have lacked tools to specifically manipulate ligand binding half-life. We developed an optogenetic approach to specifically tune the binding half-life of a light-responsive ligand to a T cell receptor without changing other binding parameters. Our results provide direct evidence of kinetic proofreading in ligand discrimination in T cells and reveal where in the signaling cascade this computation is executed This approach could be used to dissect other signaling cascades where binding kinetics play a central role in signal transmission.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Distinguished Lecture on Europe. \"At Least We Don't Do That Here.\" How Europe (Mis)Understands Black America
DESCRIPTION:European views on Black America are informed by a range of contradictory tendencies: amnesia about its own colonial past\, ambivalence about its racial present\, a tradition of anti-racism and international solidarity\, and an often fraught geo-political relationship with the United States itself. From the vantage point of a continent that both resents and covets American power\, and is in little position to do anything about it\, African Americans represent to many in Europe a redemptive force—living proof that the U.S. is both not all that it claims to be and could be so much greater than it is. This sense of superiority is made possible\, in no small part\, by a woefully\, willfully incomplete and toxic nostalgia of Europe's own colonial history which has left significant room for denial\, distortion\, ignorance\, and sophistry. The result\, in the post-war era\, has been moments of solidarity often impaired by exocitization or infantilization in which Europe has found it easier to export anti-racism across the Atlantic than to practice it at home or export it across the Mediterranean and beyond.\n \nGary Younge is a journalist\, author\, broadcaster\, and professor of sociology at the University of Manchester in England. Formerly a U.S.-based columnist and editor-at-large for *The Guardian*\, he is an editorial board member of *The Nation* magazine\, an Alfred Knobler Fellow for Type Media\, and a Fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences. His most recent book\, *Another Day in the Death of America: A Chronicle of Ten Short Lives*\, won the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize from Columbia Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation. His writing and research cover social movements\, inequality\, race\, immigration\, identity\, and politics. Younge studied French and Russian at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and journalism at City University of London. \n\nRegistration for this Zoom webinar is required at http://myumi.ch/VPOvz.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Tradition Never Dies: “Lắng nghe\,” Active Listening\, and Activism in Contemporary Vietnam
DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to the public\; please register at https://bit.ly/3lzI791\nFriday\, March 19\, 2021\, 12 PM EST\n\nTradition always seems to be dying\, or so say “the experts.” Scholars at academic conferences\, diplomats at UNESCO\, and government policy makers have belabored tradition’s downfall for decades as evidence of the necessity of intervention. Frequently\, however\, these interventions hide ulterior motives—for scholars\, codifying traditions advance their careers\; for diplomats\, supporting the documentation of art bolsters tradition for consumption\; for policy makers\, selectively supporting certain practices over others serves nation-building strategies. These experts also tend to ignore the voices of practitioners themselves. Had these experts listened\, they would have understood that tradition remains firmly tied to everyday life and even activism.\n\nIn this presentation\, I examine how “tradition” lives a vibrant life in contemporary Vietnam and suggest that we retire the trite adage that tradition is dying. Tradition is tested\, certainly\, and frequently is reframed and revised\; indeed\, one genre of southern Vietnamese opera\, cải lương\, includes renovation (cải) in the genre name. Television shows\, films\, and popular music present many examples of how tradition does not simply inspire but is actively practiced and carried forward. In the television show Tài tử miệt vườn (Countryside Amateur)\, singers of southern Vietnamese traditional music from all walks of life receive praise from a panel of established singers and teach traditional music to viewers within a flashy gameshow format. In the film Song Lang (2018)\, director Leon Le tells a love story of two men in the 1980s and uses sounds of cải lương to give voice to LGBT voices on screen. In the music video for “BET ON ME” by the rapper Suboi\, sounds of the đàn tranh zither mix with a Beyoncé-like delivery of lyrics to advocate for particular kinds of listening in an increasingly modernized Vietnam. All of these examples advance activism through tradition for forms of living to which we need to listen more closely.\n \nDr. Alexander M. Cannon is Lecturer in Music at the University of Birmingham (UK)\, where he teaches classes in ethnomusicology\, critical musicology\, and the traditional musics of Asia. He further serves as Co-editor of Ethnomusicology Forum\, the journal of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE)\, and sits on the BFE Committee. He formerly served as Book Reviews Editor for the Yearbook of Traditional Music and as Secretary of the Board for the Society for Asian Music. An alumnus of the University of Michigan\, he holds an MA and PhD in ethnomusicology from the School of Music\, Theatre and Dance\, where he wrote a dissertation on the southern Vietnamese traditional music genre đờn ca tài tử (music of talented amateurs). He recently completed a book manuscript titled “A Music Without a Name”: Creativity from Seed to Ruin in Southern Vietnam\, and also has an article forthcoming in the journal Ethnomusicology. He has previously published in Ethnomusicology\, Ethnomusicology Forum\, Asian Music\, and the Journal of Vietnamese Studies.\n \n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:E. coli meets world: how the environment shapes a bacterial cell
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Like other single celled organisms\, bacteria are uniquely sensitive to changes in their physical and chemical environment. With only the minimal protection offered by their cell envelope\, fluctuations in nutrient availability\, pH\, osmolarity\, and temperature have an immediate impact on diverse aspects of cell physiology as bacteria struggle to adapt to the new condition. On a more extended time scale\, nutrient availability is one of the major determinants of bacterial cell morphology. *Escherichia coli* cells are three times larger when cultured at steady state in nutrient rich conditions than in nutrient poor ones\, due to the actions of nutrient-dependent division inhibitors\, accelerated lipid synthesis and a concomitant increase in plasma membrane capacity\, and other yet to be identified factors. Little is known\, however\, about the effect of other environmental conditions on bacterial cell morphology. Focusing on one environmental variable\, I will discuss how modest changes in pH—too small to affect growth rate—alter the activity of the essential proteins that construct *E. coli*’s peptidoglycan cell wall\, increase resistance to clinically relevant antibiotics\, and reduce cell length by as much as 20%. Together this work identifies pH as a significant environmental determinant of bacterial physiology and morphogenesis whose impact is mediated primarily through changes in the cell envelope.\n\nHost: Anthony Vecchiarelli

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Lifetimes of (near-)eternal false vacua
DESCRIPTION:Seminar link : http://myumi.ch/O4P7E\nWe're used to the idea that false vacua in quantum field theory can always decay with some finite rate. I'll explain why the title of the talk makes sense anyway by discussing some simple QFTs which have false vacua which can live an arbitrarily long time. Their lifetime is set by the short-distance details of the theory\, rather than the familiar long-distance ingridients discussed in textbook presentations of false-vacuum decay. The talk will focus on examples in 2d and 4d\, with the 4d example having the same propagating degrees of freedom as conventional QCD\, and the (near) eternal false vacua will turn out to be consequences of (nearly exact) (d-3)-form global symmetries.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Interdisciplinary Seminar on Social Science Methodology (I3SM)
DESCRIPTION:The primary function of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Social Science Methodology (I3SM) is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for students and faculty to present their current projects and to receive feedback on either the methodological component of their project or a methodology under development. Presenters can also present new research questions and ideas and receive ideas about which methodologies would work best to tackle such questions. We define methodology broadly as the approaches to which data is collected and/or organized to give empirical content to social science research. It includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.\n\nTo join the meeting via Zoom\, email skuzushi@umich.edu for the meeting link.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Symposium: Where Is Social Reproduction Theory Now?
DESCRIPTION:There has been an explosion in recent years of scholarship on social reproduction theory (SRT)\, which builds on a long tradition of critique within Marxist feminist scholarship that has focused on the labor required to produce workers and society as a whole. While it arose out of the need to explain the continued oppression of women under capitalism\, the SRT framework has been extended to understanding racism and other sources of division between workers. SRT offers a perspective on the link between the oppressive logics of “race\,” sexuality\, ability\, gender\, and more\, with the development and actualization of labor powers. In short\, a renewed SRT provides a historical materialist theory of multiple oppressions within capitalist society. This body of scholarship\, varied in its political and theoretical orientations\, takes as its subject precisely the continuous and daily reproduction of capitalism as a system. Our round table discussion consists of a conversation with Tithi Bhattacharya\, one of the foremost proponents of social reproduction theory\, on some of the recent developments in SRT and their relevance in our current conjuncture.\n\nRegistrants will receive a link to a pre-circulated paper by Professor Bhattacharya.\n\nFor a brief video explaining social reproduction theory\, please visit: \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uur-pMk7XjY\n\nPanelists:\nTithi Bhattacharya\, Associate Professor\, History\, Purdue University\nSueann Caulfield\, Associate Professor\, History\, University of Michigan\nEmily A. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Pottery of Chincha\, Revisited: Jennifer Larios\, Doctoral Candidate\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The Pottery of Chincha\, Revisited: Jennifer Larios\n\n	The Chincha Valley\, Peru is most often cited as one of the few places that greatly benefited from Inca imperial expansion through alliance. The Chincha Valley is also known as being one of the points of study in Dorothy Menzel's seminal analysis on the pottery of the south coast of Peru. While Menzel's research was the first of its kind\, very few attempts have been made to conduct an intensive study on the pottery of Chincha in order to obtain insights into the socioeconomic and political organization of the area. Thus\, the purpose of this talk is to employ a much larger and diverse pottery sample in order to understand the nature of production\, distribution\, and exchange of pottery in the Chincha Valley.\n\n\nRising Complexity on the Frontier:\nIsotopic Evidence of Administration at Iron Age Khirbet Summeily\, Israel: Kara Larson\n\n	Khirbet Summeily is an Iron Age II site located northwest of Tell el-Hesi in Southern Israel. Excavations have revealed a large\, singular structure with an adjoining ritual space dated to the Iron Age IIA (ca. 1000-870 bce). Recent interpretations suggest the site was integrated into a regional economic and political system and functioned as a potential administrative outpost based on the material culture and architecture recovered from the Iron Age IIA layers. This talk presents the carbon\, oxygen\, and strontium isotopic analyses of intra-tooth samples from ovicaprine and cattle remains to test herd management strategies in connection to administrative provisioning activities. The animal remains are used as proxies to identify political and economic ties through shared foodways and herd management patterns. Results suggest that the animals recovered at Khirbet Summeily were raised in local and non-local locations with differential diet and management patterns. This supports the hypothesis from other cultural material finds that Khirbet Summeily acted as an administrative outpost in the region. This is the first isotopic evidence indicating an administrative outpost in the Greater Hesi region and provides evidence for reforming political complexity during the Iron Age IIA.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Early Career Scientists Symposium: Natural History Collections: Drivers of Innovation
DESCRIPTION:A virtual symposium held on five consecutive Fridays beginning March 5\, 2021.\n\nREGISTRATION required for Zoom entry. Registrants will receive the Zoom link and passcode via email. See links this page to register and for more information.\n\nSession III (Moderator: Ben Nicholas)\n\n1 pm	Alexis Mychajliw\n\n1:30 pm	Daniel Park\n\n2 pm	Alex White\n\n2:30 pm	Panel discussion: Alexis Mychajliw\, Daniel Park\, Alex White\n\nAlexis Mychajliw\nResearch Associate\, La Brea Tar Pits and Museum\nAssistant Professor\, Middlebury College\n\nTalk title: Conflicts in context: natural history collections as archives of human-carnivore interactions through time\n\nAbstract\nHuman-wildlife conflict in both rural and urban areas is a persistent threat to the continued existence of many predators. Historically\, mammalian carnivores have faced severe range contractions\, but\, in some places\, they are naturally re-expanding or being reintroduced\, accompanied by a range of political dilemmas and public misconceptions. In combination with traditional conservation studies of extant populations\, I provide historic and pre-European baselines to anticipate these dilemmas and distinguish between novel behaviors versus the return of normal\, pre-contraction variation. Museum collections (natural history\, archaeological\, and paleontological can provide unexpected spaces for policy-relevant dialogues among stakeholders and be at the center of interdisciplinary working groups including ecologists\, paleontologists\, historians\, practitioners and social scientists. Employing a diverse range of geochemical\, morphological and archival techniques in a conservation paleobiology framework\, I have used museum collections to reframe public discourse on the reintroduction of grizzly bears to California\, discover the first successful case of North American “Pleistocene rewilding” for carnivores from the 1930s\, and evaluate how culturally important Japanese red foxes have responded to urbanization with attendant disease-transmission consequences. Given the cultural biases present in historical narratives of carnivore conflict\, museum specimens provide an irreplaceable mechanism for separating perception from reality to guide real-world policy decisions\, and museum exhibits themselves can be vehicles for communicating this new understanding.\n\nDaniel Park\nAssistant Professor\, Department of Biological Sciences\, Purdue University\n\nTalk title: Herbarium collections reveal wide variation in plant phenological responses to climate\n\nAbstract\nChanges in phenology–the timing of life history events–are among the most dramatic biological responses to climate change. Herbarium specimens represent snapshots of phenology (i.e. flowering and fruiting) at a specific place and time\, and have tremendous promise to increase the spatial\, temporal and taxonomic resolution of phenological data. However\, difficulties in extracting useful information from specimens efficiently have limited efforts to apply collections-based approaches to large-scale phenological research. Here we present two contrasting approaches for this purpose\; crowdsourcing and machine learning\; and discuss the promises and opportunities of applying specimen-derived data to phenological research. Using these approaches\, we examined tens of thousands of specimens and uncovered substantial and unexpected variation in phenological sensitivity across species ranges. We also observe patterns of temporal convergence among closely related species when they co-occur. These results suggest that phenological responses to climate change will be heterogeneous within communities and across regions\, with large amounts of regional variability driven by local adaptation\, phenotypic plasticity and differences in species assemblages. We thus demonstrate the utility of natural history collections in revealing large-scale patterns within assemblages and across continents that ultimately can improve forecasts of climatic change impacts on the structure and function of ecosystems.\n\nAlex White\nMachine Learning Postdoctoral Fellow\, Data Science Lab\, National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution\n\nTalk title: Biogeography of fern shapes as revealed by deep learning\n\nAbstract\nWith digitized herbarium specimens and associated metadata accumulating rapidly in open access repositories\, we are now able to exploit data-hungry computer vision techniques in order to evaluate fundamental questions in plant evolution. High among the list of unknowns are the roles that ecological factors and morphological similarity play in mediating biogeographic patterns of taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. Here\, I integrate deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) into a biogeographic study of morphological\, taxonomic\, and phylogenetic diversity in ferns and lycophytes. I show how CNNs and digitized specimens can be used to extract quantitative estimates of morphospace occupation\, and I use these techniques to evaluate diversity-disparity relationships within ferns across latitudes. I also discuss how CNNs can be used to overcome logistical obstacles arising from modern specimen based workflows involving millions of images.\n\nRead more\, including about the speakers and their talks\, on the ECSS website: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/ecss/ \n\nREGISTER: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/ecss/home/register/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: 3D Seismic Reflection Data: Has the Geological Hubble Retained Its Focus?
DESCRIPTION:Zoom meeting ID#913 6098 6089\nIn their seminal paper in 2002\, Joe Cartwright and Mads Huuse referred to 3D seismic reflection data as the 'Geological Hubble’\, arguing these data had the potential to revolutionise our understanding of the genesis and evolution of sedimentary basins. Almost two decades later\, I will here outline just some of the key recent advances made in our understanding of basin structure and stratigraphy\, focusing on: (i) the intrusion and extrusion of igneous rocks\; (ii) salt tectonics\; (iii) the geometry\, growth\, and seismogenic hazard posed by normal faults\; and (iv) the structure and emplacement of submarine landslides. I will stress that future advances in these and other areas relies on energy companies and government agencies continuing to make their data freely available via free\, easy-to-access data portals. I will issue a clarion call to academics\, stressing that ‘geodynamicists’\, sedimentologists\, structural geologists and geomorphologists\, amongst many\, many others\, can benefit from using what I believe are currently an underused data type. Most fundamentally\, seismic reflection data should be used across the undergraduate syllabus\, such that future generations of geoscientists are aware of its power and limitations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Interdisciplinary Mathematics (AIM) Seminar | Probing the Cores of Massive Stars through their Surface
DESCRIPTION:Stars are opaque\, which makes it difficult to study their interiors. Recent space-based telescopes have led to the new field of asteroseismology: by measuring global oscillation modes of a star\, you can infer its interior properties. Massive stars have convection in their cores which can generate waves\, which might be detectable at the surface. In the first part of this talk\, I will describe a heuristic way of estimating wave generation by convection\, and compare it to high-resolution numerical simulations in Cartesian geometry. To make quantitative predictions to compare with observations\, one must run simulations in spherical geometry. In the second part of my talk\, I will present a new spectral algorithm for solving nearly arbitrary\, tensorial PDEs in spherical coordinates. The challenge is to devise bases which respect regularity conditions at r=0\, which depend on the rank of the tensor. The algorithm can be easily applied to the problem of wave generation by convection in stars\, as well as a wide range of other problems in stellar astrophysics\, core geophysics\, and planetary sciences.\n\nPlease contact Charlie Doering (doering@umich.edu) with any questions.

SUMMARY:Meeting:West Quad DPE Presents: Linda L Newman Common Read Project
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this project is to gather residents in WQ to reflect upon\, share\, and experience their perspectives through various mediums. For this year’s program we will explore the theme of resilience amid uncertainty\, conflict\, and loss. Resilience can foster hope\, determination\, confidence\, and the ability to bounce back despite failures and setbacks. We will collectively read pieces written by Audre Lorde\, Maya Angelou\, and Tino Villanueva. We will then individually create a “found poem” from these pieces based on what spoke to you or how you relate to their work. \n\nThis program is specifically for residents in West Quad. Other interested community members can participate via the campus wide virtual offerings.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Sun Young Park: Designing Health Technology to Empower Patients
DESCRIPTION:Successful chronic illness management requires active patient participation and effective communication among the patient\, caregivers\, and clinicians. However\, this can be difficult\, especially for more vulnerable patients who may lack the self-knowledge\, sufficient communication skills\, or appropriate information access. Such patients’ needs\, in consequence\, are often overlooked\, and their capacity to understand care information misjudged by providers and caregivers. To support patient empowerment and activation\, Sun Young Park’s research focuses on vulnerable individuals with low health literacy and a lack of information access and accessible tools and examines their needs and barriers.\n\nIn this talk\, Park presents work that investigates opportunities to empower and activate these vulnerable individuals through two case studies: patients in an emergency care setting and pediatric patients with cancer. The results of the studies reveal the details of the adaptation behaviors and experience of patients during an emergency care and pediatric cancer patients\, shedding light on a need for redesigning Health IT systems to engage patients\, who have not been sufficiently considered and involved in the current system design. In addition\, the results point to a need for design considerations to promote and enhance the patients’ positive experiences. This talk will conclude with broader implications for evaluating and designing a socio-technical system in complex healthcare contexts\, focusing on the role of HCI/design researchers in this emerging design space.\n\nSun Young Park\, PhD is an assistant professor in Stamps School of Art and Design and the School of Information at the University of Michigan. Her research lies at the intersection of Health Informatics\, Human Computer Interaction (HCI)\, and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). In particular\, her research focuses on evaluating and designing health information systems and technologies in both the clinical and non-clinical settings. Her studies related to designing health IT systems that support healthcare providers’ information work\, focusing on healthcare consumers’ information needs and behaviors in the hospital setting\, earned a best paper award from the Journal of International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA)\, was chosen for the IMIA Yearbook 2013\, garnered a finalist nomination for the Diana Forsythe Award from the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Her research projects have been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) CRII award in 2017\, the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) grant in 2018\, and the NSF CAREER award in 2020. She was inducted into the Inaugural Class of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Future of Computing Academy in 2017. Park has served on many scientific and technical program committees for top-tier academic conferences\, including ACM CHI\, CSCW\, and DIS.\n\nOur 2020-2021 Series is brought to you with the support of our streaming partners\, Detroit Public Television and PBS Books.\n\nHow to WatchAll events will be webcast on Fridays at 8pm (ET) at http://pennystampsevents.org and https://dptv.org/pennystamps.
