SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Superhero Therapy: Graphic Medicine and Therapy
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed.\n\nComics and graphic memoirs are powerful venues for not only sharing but to fight the stigma surrounding mental health issues. They are one way these stories are increasingly being told\, explored\, and processed as part of paths toward healing for both the creator of the comic and the consumer of the comic. Comics and graphic memoirs offer special affordances as a method\, allowing the external and internal experiences to co-exist in the same narrative space. This presentation will share examples of what these processes might look like from the perspective of the individual as well as the therapist and touch on ways to use comics creation as part of personal storytelling\, when the individual is ready to do so.\n\nMarna M. Clowney-Robinson\, LLMSW\, MLIS is a Clinical Social Worker and Librarian. As a mental health provider\, she specializes in identity issues\, eating disorders\, and trauma. In addition\, she serves as an Access and Public Services Librarian at the University of Michigan Library. At the intersection of social work and librarianship\, she utilizes bibliotherapy to treat eating disorders\, has been featured on National Public Radio (NPR) discussing issues related to eating disorders within minority populations\, and does research focused on trauma-informed approaches in academic libraries.\n\nThis is the fourth of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Graphic Books and Memes. The next lecture will be on April 1\, 2021. The title is: Graphic Novels Grow Up with Young Readers.. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:An Ounce of Prevention: Confronting Concerns about the COVID-19 Vaccine
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on our nation for almost a year. The advent of a vaccine presents the promise of a way out of this pandemic. However\, concerns over the safety of the vaccine in conjunction with the historical reservations of People of Color regarding medical research and treatment have made for a tepid response to the availability of the vaccine. What are the best options to move forward? How do we address the concerns of those reluctant to take the vaccine? Join us for a Town Hall Meeting as we discuss the concerns and offer solutions.\n\nPanelists: \n- Dr. Jessie Marshall\, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine\, University of Michigan Medical School\n- Dr. Najibah Rehman\, Medical Director\, Detroit Health Department\n- Nicholas St. Fleur\, Knight-Wallace Reporting Fellow\, University of Michigan

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Trauma and Memory: Thinking from Somali Diasporic Contexts
DESCRIPTION:This workshop focuses on how geographies continue to limit our thinking\, even our potentialities in how we might think our Opacity/ies and Relation/s to each other. In particular\, following Alhaag’s invitation to think from Somalia\, she asks\, what is yielded when we think colonially bifurcated geographies together? When in Alhaag’s words we imagine and care for each other 'from different oceans and seas that wrap around the African continent'? A description to Alhaag’s related curatorial project will be available in a temporary Dropbox link (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/y2kqddexyrrlxw8/AAAokTzyfj_Lhlu16CO6SI29a?dl=0) .\n\nFollowing Alhaag’s call\, Benedicty-Kokken invites us to consider Igiaba Scego’s writing. Notably\, Benedicty-Kokken has chosen excerpts from two texts in which Scego deploys a Jewish-Muslim friendship: \n-the first\, Scego’s novel *Adua* originally published in Italian in 2015\, and translated from the Italian into English in 2017\, recounts the historical and geopolitical connections among Ethiopia\, the Horn of Africa\, and Italy through stories of four generations implicated in the region\; \n-the second\, the children’s book *Prestami le ali* [Lend Me Your Wings]\, illustrated by Fabio Visintin\, based imaginatively on a true story of a rhinoceros who/that a Dutch merchant brought for show in Venice in the 1750s: it tells the story of a Jewish girl and a Somali enslaved boy\, and their collective care for the rhinoceros\, and each other. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LHS Collaboratory March Session
DESCRIPTION:Speakers Stefan Boes\, PhD and Sarah Mantwill\, PhD from the university of Lucerne will discuss the Swiss Learning Health System.\n\nPromoting and supporting uptake of evidence and evidence-informed decision-making in health-systems related policy and practice is a challenge. In Switzerland\, the need to address this matter has been increasingly emphasized by different actors in the health system. In particular\, the lack of comprehensive coordination efforts in the field of health services research\, and subsequent knowledge translation activities\, has been stressed. In response\, the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) was established as a nationwide project in 2017\, currently involving 10 academic partner institutions. One of the overarching objectives of the SLHS is to bridge research\, policy\, and practice by providing an infrastructure that supports learning cycles by: continuously identifying issues relevant to the Swiss health system\, systemizing relevant evidence\, presenting potential courses of action\, and revising and reshaping responses. Key features of learning cycles in the SLHS include the development of policy/evidence briefs that serve as a basis for stakeholder dialogues with actors from research\, policy and practice. Issues that are identified to be further pursued are monitored for potential implementation and eventually evaluated to inform new learning cycles and to support continuous learning within the system.\n\nDr. Boes and Dr. Mantwill will provide an overview of the SLHS and its key features\, as well as its capacity building efforts to train young researchers in the field of learning health systems\, and the development of a centralized metadata repository in support of creating a sufficient large evidence basis to support learning cycles in the Swiss health system. Further\, they will discuss lessons learned from the past and the newest developments of the SLHS in light of a second funding phase supported by the Swiss government.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Remaking a Life: How Women Living with HIV/AIDS Confront Inequality
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\n- Celeste Watkins-Hayes\, Jean E. Fairfax Collegiate Professor of Public Policy\; University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor\; Professor of Sociology\, U-M\n- Gary W. Harper\, Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education\, and Global Public Health\, U-M\n- Jennifer Dominique Jones\, Assistant Professor of History & Women's and Gender Studies\, U-M\n\nIn the face of life-threatening news\, how does our view of life change—and what do we do it transform it? Remaking a Life uses the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a lens to understand how women generate radical improvements in their social well being in the face of social stigma and economic disadvantage. Drawing on interviews with nationally recognized AIDS activists as well as over one hundred Chicago-based women living with HIV/AIDS\, Celeste Watkins-Hayes takes readers on an uplifting journey through women’s transformative projects\, a multidimensional process in which women shift their approach to their physical\, social\, economic\, and political survival\, thereby changing their viewpoint of “dying from” AIDS to “living with” it. With an eye towards improving the lives of women\, Remaking a Life provides techniques to encourage private\, nonprofit\, and government agencies to successfully collaborate\, and shares policy ideas with the hope of alleviating the injuries of inequality faced by those living with HIV/AIDS every day.\n\nThis event is part of IRWG's Gender: New Works\, New Questions series\, which spotlights recent publications by U-M faculty members and allows for deeper discussion by an interdisciplinary panel.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:EEB Virtual Seminar: The plant mating system and the evolution of resistance
DESCRIPTION:The mating system\, or who mates with whom\, and how often\, is a critical trait that influences the distribution of genetic variation among populations as well as fitness and the ability of populations to respond to selection. Although we know that the plant mating system is strongly influenced by environmental factors\, we do not understand if and how the mating system may be shaped by anthropogenic forces. In this talk\, I give a brief overview of the ongoing ecological genetics/genomics projects within the lab and focus on our attempts to understand how the mating system may evolve given regimes of strong human-mediated selection.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Resolution Office: Transition Story Circle
DESCRIPTION:A Story Circle is a small group of individuals sitting in a circle\, sharing stories—usually from their own experience or imagination—focusing on a common theme. As each person in turn shares a story\, a richer and more complex story emerges. By the end\, people see both real differences and things their stories have in common. Story Circles are often understood as deriving from indigenous traditions. There are many variations (https://usdac.us).\nIn this session participants will be invited to share a story around the theme of Transition. Staff from the Rackham Resolution Office will serve as facilitators for the process and will end the session by sharing campus resources and information related to the theme.\nThe prompt for this story circle is: Share a story about a transition you have experienced in coming to Michigan or in navigating your degree.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/9o0BW.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CLASP Seminar Series: Prof. Sparkle Malone
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Sparkle Malone of Florida International University will give a virtual lecture as part of the CLASP Seminar Series. Please join us!\n\nThis is a zoom virtual event. Please contact lhopkins@umich.edu to request zoom access. \n\n\"Focus on the carbon: Understanding the conditions that facilitate resilient ecosystems\"\n\nABSTRACT: \nAlthough wetlands are valued for their capacity to support the resilience of coastal communities\, these ecosystems are at risk due to anthropogenic pressure and sea level rise (SLR). In one of the most dynamic wetland complexes in the world\, the Florida Everglades\, changes in freshwater supply and accelerated rates of SLR are changing historical landscape patterns\, including the carbon (C) cycle. The hydrology and disturbance regime in the Everglades region developed a rich diversity of communities. Productivity across the Everglades peaks near the coast (Mangroves Riverine Forests\; 1200 g C m-2 yr-1) where the supply of P from seawater is balanced by freshwater supplies. Further inland\, long- and short-hydroperiod freshwater ecosystems range from being a small sink to a small source of CO2 (-11– -110 g CO2 m-2 yr-1) annually. With the future of South Florida tied to the management of natural resources\, it is essential that we understand how shifts in climate\, land management and disturbance regimes influence the resilience of South Florida. \n\nDr. Malone’s primary research focus is to improve our understanding of how climate and disturbance regimes influence spatial and temporal variability in ecosystem structure and function. Using remote sensing\, eddy covariance\, and spatial and temporal models she explores questions related to ecosystem condition\, sustainability\, and vulnerability to climate extremes.\n\nPlease join us!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME 500 Seminar: Warren L. Grayson
DESCRIPTION:Tissue engineering provides a viable means of regenerating bone and skeletal muscle tissues following injuries that lead to large volumetric defects. Our lab has developed advanced biomaterial and stem cell-based approaches to promote functional recovery following volumetric muscle loss and critical-sized craniofacial bone injuries. This presentation will focus on three areas of ongoing research: (1) I will present our lab’s efforts to regenerate vascularized and innervated skeletal muscle in mice including our recent studies using human pluripotent stem cells. (2) Recently\, our group completed a study focused on designing biomaterials to guide bone regeneration in situ in minipigs using intraoperative protocols for combining autologous stem cells with 3D-printed scaffolds. (3) Understanding the interaction between vascular cells and osteoprogenitors is critical for developing effective treatment methods. I will describe recent studies in which we developed a quantitative imaging platform for characterizing the spatial relationships between cell populations in the native murine calvarium. https://openbme.org/\n\nZOOM LINK TO REGISTER: https://cwru.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Kgyl3yf4TcKvlk9xNKluhA

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Emerging InSAR Applications for Observing the Dynamics of Earth Systems
DESCRIPTION:Ann Chen\nAssistant Professor\nDept. of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics\nThe University of Texas at Austin\n\nOver the past 60 years\, advances in satellite remote sensing techniques have made it possible to observe the Earth with finer resolution and broader coverage than could ever be achieved before. In particular\, Earth-observing radar satellite missions have generated a large volume of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data since 1992 with 10s-100s of meters spatial resolution. Recently launched Sentinel-1 mission has provided global coverage and open data access on a 6-day repeat cycle (with a two-satellite constellation). The upcoming NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission is scheduled to launch in 2023\, which will continue to provide high-quality radar data free of charge for scientific uses in the coming decades. In this talk\, we will discuss how to infer a broader range of properties of the earth’s surface and subsurface using InSAR. These newly available satellite observations have opened up new research opportunities in understanding the dynamics of earth systems.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nAnn Chen received a B.S. degree in geophysics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2008\; an M.S. degree in electrical engineering in 2012 and a Ph.D. degree in geophysics in 2014 from Stanford University\, California. She has more than 10 years of experience in SAR/InSAR algorithm design for earth system science applications. In 2017\, she joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor. Since 2018\, she has also served as a faculty member (by courtesy) in the Department of Geological Sciences at UT Austin. She currently leads the Radar Interferometry Group housed in the Center for Space Research. Her group focuses on the development of new satellite\, and especially interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques\, for studying natural and induced seismicity\, groundwater resources\, natural disasters\, and permafrost hydrology and carbon storage.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Chanese Forte (Environmental Health Sciences) and Hyeon Joo (Health Infrastructure and Learning Systems)
DESCRIPTION:CHANESE FORTE: Chanese is a Dual PhD student pursuing a degree in the Environmental Health Sciences and Scientific Computing. Chanese’s research interests lie in chemical exposure in agriculture workers and cellular alteration.\n\n\"ASCERTAINING PESTICIDE EXPOSURE AND BIOACTIVITY USING OPEN SOURCE DATA: Pesticides are known to be harmful chemicals to human health\, however they are still heavily used in agriculture. Using 3 large publicly available datasets\, this study aims to 1) quantify pesticide exposure levels of the US general population in comparison to farmworkers\, and 2) assess biological activity of these pesticides using ToxCast high throughput screening toxicity data. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a cross-sectional study representative of the US population with oversampling weights for minoritized populations. NHANES was used to quantify pesticide exposure among US farmworkers and the general population who responded to NHANES between 1999 and 2016. Overall\, there are 65\,893 farmworkers in the NHANES dataset with at least one pesticide biomarker present in the laboratory\, and a total of 92\,140 people total in NHANES. Biomarker measurements were available for 28 different pesticides\, which also have been assessed for dose-dependent toxicity using high throughput assays in ToxCast. Of the 28 pesticides\, Mirex had the lowest average exposure concentration at 1.19×10- 11mol/L among US farmworkers\, whereas p\,p’-DDE had the highest average exposure level at 5.4×10- 7mol/L. In ToxCast\, the AC50 represents the concentration at 50% of the maximum biological activity. The average AC50 for p\,p’-DDE is 1.3mol/L suggesting that activation levels are considerably higher than that of the average farmworkers’ exposure levels. It compares and analyzes through regression\, the US pesticide exposure levels to the bioactivity of these same pesticides within the human body. By comparing population level data with toxicological assay data\, we hope to create a more overarching idea of how pesticides may be affecting the body and a human population level.\n\nHYEON JOO: Hyeon Joo is a second year PhD student in Health Infrastructures and Learning Systems. He completed his MS in Computer Science and Engineering\, and Master of Health Informatics from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His research focuses on developing and implementing computational data-driven algorithms\, systems or tools to help users identify gaps and make informed decisions. He loves working in the field of health care as a data scientist and a software engineer.\n\n\"EARLY PREDICTION OF HEART FAILURE USING ATTENTION MODELS USING EHR DATA\": Heart Failure (HF) is a severe and progressive chronic condition affecting over 5.8 million patients with a 5-year mortality rate of 45-60% in the United States. Despite significant efforts and advanced HF management\, diagnosing HF in the early stages remains challenging due to its syndromic nature and non-specific disease presentation. In this seminar\, I will present a single attention recurrent network and a hierarchical attention convolutional neural networks to detect the early stage of HF at a tertiary hospital. I will also describe various methods of feature selection to reduce the computation time and improve the performance of the models. Lastly\, I will present the challenges of adopting models in clinical practice which leads to my next research steps.\n\nRegister to receive Zoom login information: https://myumi.ch/BobQB

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Howard R. Marsh Lecture
DESCRIPTION:I am the Other. I am a Mexican\, Latina\, brown woman. I am a mother\, and I like feminist ideals. Does that undermine my ability to report the truth? Can my experience of inhabiting a particular culturally-inscribed position make it easier to relate to social injustices? To my indigenous fellow Mexicans\, I am a white\, privileged woman. The international opportunity to cover the news has shifted my perspective\, and displaced preconceived notions of what otherness means to me. Amid all of these changes\, however\, what has not changed is a professional priority to report the truth.\n\n\nBio\nAna Avila is an investigative journalist\, most recently she was the deputy director of the Spanish edition of Newsweek based in Mexico City. Over the last 15 years\, she has investigated corruption in political parties and campaigns\, congressional lobbying leading to unfair practices in the private sector and the effects on the indigenous communities and environmental affectations due to mining in Mexico and Colombia. From 2010 to 2011\, Avila worked for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists investigating the asbestos industry in Latin America. She was the co-winner of the John B. Oakes Award\, from Columbia University School of Journalism and the Investigative Reporters and Editors Award for the story\, “Dangers in the Dust.” Avila holds a B.A. in journalism from Iberoamericana University and an M.A. in social science from the Latin American Faculty of Social Science\, both in Mexico City. She was a Fulbright Scholar in 2009-2010 and a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan 2019-2020. She is currently the Howard R. Marsh Visiting Professor of Journalism at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reading and Q&A with Kathleen Graber
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nKathleen Graber’s poetry collection\, *The River Twice* (Princeton University Press\, 2019)\, is an elegiac meditation on impermanence and change. She presents a fluid world in which so much―including space and time\, the subterranean realm of dreams\, and language itself―seems protean.\n\nGraber is also the author of two previous books of poetry\, *Correspondence* and *The Eternal City*\, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the Guggenheim Foundation. She is an associate professor of English at Virginia Commonwealth University.\n\n\nThe Zell Visiting Writers Series brings outstanding writers to campus each semester. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (BA ’64\, LLDHon ’13). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Speaker & Affiliations
DESCRIPTION:The stream of consciousness refers to ideas\, images\, and memories that meander across the mind when we are otherwise unoccupied. The standard view is that these thoughts arise from \"automatic\" subpersonal processes\, and we are for the most part passive observers of them. Drawing on a series of laboratory studies we have conducted\, I argue this view is importantly incorrect. On the alternative view I put forward\, the stream of consciousness arises from “basic decisions”\, a ubiquitous and underappreciated feature of our mental life. Basic decisions lie in a grey zone: They are both manifestations of agency as well as obstacles to it.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIA Lecture | Who Were Ancient Greek Sculptors in Clay? Insights from Their Fingerprints
DESCRIPTION:**Please note\, the date has changed**\n\nUnderstanding who ancient artisans were\, how they learned their craft\, and how artisanal labor was organized has long been of interest to both professional archaeologists and the wider public. A new tool called dermatoglyphics (fingerprint analysis) can be brought to bear on this question. Prints were accidentally embedded in ancient plaster\, lost-wax cast bronzes\, and most frequently\, ceramics before they were fired.\n\nCeramic sculptures of all sizes preserve the prints of those who made them. A combination of traditional and new dermatoglyphic techniques allows us to evaluate not only questions about which individuals made which objects\, but also to see firsthand evidence of apprenticeship. Prints from ceramic sculpture originating at sites in the Argolid and Corinthia allow us to begin to discuss these issues in more concrete terms than has previously been possible.\n\nYou are invited to a Zoom webinar.\nWhen: March 25\, 2021\, 05:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\nTopic: Ann Arbor AIA Society Lecture\n\nThis lecture is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America.\nTo learn more about the AIA\, please visit archaeological.org.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Ocean in the School: How Pacific Islander Students Transformed their University
