At first glance, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco\u2014a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled, scrutinized, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. A useful starting point is Eric Auerbach's work on mimesis and realism. Auerbach's brilliant literary insights into sermo humilis and the Judeo-Christian rejection of the ancient orders and hierarchies of rhetoric raise important objections. The first is that complex works of literature and art can seldom be pinned down just to one rhetorical mode or level of style. Rhetoric was not a single philosophy or body of knowledge to be adopted or repudiated, but a set of practices that varied ad usum, according to need and occasion.\r\n\r\nHere I propose that the medieval Christian dispensation adhered to all the genera dicendi and rhetorical modes, and this opinion is tested with particular regard to epideictic or 'display' rhetoric and its relationship to 'realism'. It was Roland Barthes who noted that the 'reality effect' stemmed in part from epideisis or 'beautiful description'. This seems to offer an alternative route to realism (in so far as we can think causally about this matter) to the frank low speech often identified as sermo humilis. Praise and great speech are also discussed here with a view to understanding the ways that, morally and metaphysically, the canonical monuments of realism in Gothic Europe aimed not to diminish their subjects through naked displays of power, but to involve them in a rhetorical discourse of magnification whose aims were fundamentally political and social. \r\n\r\nFinally, how can we recapture the great speech of medieval art without taking recourse to post-medieval notions of the Sublime? Until 2011, Myanmar had spent over 40 years under military rule, bringing the country into deep poverty and isolating it from the rest of the world. Despite a transition to democracy in the early 2010s, the political climate has remained unstable.\r\n\r\nThe situation has escalated since the coup, with the Myanmar military and police attempting to take control through inhumane violence. However, despite the risks, people of all ethnicities, ages and professions are marching in protest against the coup. Many essential workers, including truck drivers and train station workers, have also gone on strike to protest.\r\n\r\n\r\nIn this talk, we will discuss Myanmar\u2019s political history, its historical heritage, and specific events that have happened since the start of the coup. In addition, we will discuss ways in which we - and you - can help the peaceful protesters in Myanmar.\r\n\r\nThe speaker\u2019s bios, as well as links to fundraising efforts to help the protesters in Myanmar, are included in this flyer.
