DESCRIPTION:The Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners is one of the largest exhibitions of art by incarcerated artists in the country. Each year\, faculty\, staff and students from the University of Michigan travel to correctional facilities across Michigan and select work for the exhibition while providing feedback and critique that strengthens artist’s work and builds community around art making inside prisons.\n\nThe pandemic halted the 25th Annual Exhibition days before it was scheduled to open in March 2020. PCAP is excited to bring you the 2020 show in a new digital gallery. Visit https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D for a link to the exhibit and a full calendar of online events.\n\nArtwork sales appointments will be available March 17–March 31\, 2021. Visitors can book sales appointments on the exhibit website. Sales will be made by phone\, and all artwork will be shipped to customers. Artists set their own prices and receive 100% of net sales revenue.\n\nThis exhibit and events are presented with support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, Om of Medicine\, and hundreds of individual donors. DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

DESCRIPTION:During the pandemic we have heard a lot about “self-care\,” but what exactly does that mean? At the most basic level\, it is how we take care of ourselves. The food we eat\, the exercise we do to stay healthy\, and the medicine we take when we get sick. However\, self-care is more than that. It includes all the things we do to stay happy and healthy. That could be taking a walk or a run outside\, or doing some arts and crafts. Maybe it’s playing a favorite sport with friends\, or trying a new recipe. \n\nDuring this virtual Family Week\, we’ll learn about how people in the ancient Mediterranean practiced self-care. DESCRIPTION:Eric Kinsler-Holloway of EK Cheesecakes will wow us with his cheesecakes. He will demonstrate how to make a scrumptious cheesecake and participants can purchase a sampler of sweet treats.\n\nEric started making cheesecakes in 2014 with his mom.  He enjoyed it so much he decided to make them on his own.  Before long\, friends and family were requesting his cheesecakes.  In 2017 he started EK’s Cheesecakes while working full time as a certified maintenance technician.  He made an Instagram page in mid-October and gave a few cheesecakes to some friends for free.  He snapped a few pictures before he delivered them and put them on Instagram.  He had almost 15 cheesecakes to make for Thanksgiving the following month!\n\nMaking cheesecake has become his passion. He now works at Zingerman’s Bakehouse baking bread.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. DESCRIPTION:Contact PSC Office for Zoom details.\n\nThe Decennial Census Digitization and Linkage project (DCDL) will digitize and link individual records across the 1960-1990 censuses and create tools to improve the dissemination of these data. When combined with already-available linkages between the censuses of 1940\, 2000\, 2010\, and soon-to-be 2020\, DCDL will complete a massive longitudinal data infrastructure covering almost the entire U.S. population since 1940. The resulting data resource will provide transformational opportunities for research\, education\, and evidence-building across the social\, behavioral\, and economic sciences. I'll describe the project's innovative methods of data rescue\, record linkage\, and restricted data access. \n\nBIO: \nJ. Trent Alexander is the Associate Director and a Research Professor at ICPSR in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Alexander's research focuses on historical demography and large-scale data infrastructures. DESCRIPTION:Lexie\n\nTitle:\nEarly Grammatical Marking Development in Mandarin-speaking Toddlers\n\nAbstract:\nThe current study examined specific and in-depth early grammatical marking development in a relatively understudied language\, Mandarin\, by using the Mandarin version of MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory (CCDI-P) with two waves of data collection including 338 monolingual children (17-36 months\; 143 females) at Time 1 and 308 children (32-55 months\; 139 females) at Time 2. Our data showed a clear order of grammatical marking acquisition among these children and supported findings on the linguistic-specificity of morphological development such that early-and late-acquired  markers in English are not acquired in that same order in Mandarin. Negative mei2\, bu4\, Posessive -de\, Classifiers\, and the Aspect marker- le were the earliest acquired markers\, followed by Modal\, Negative bie2\, Adverb\, Sentence Final Particles\, Resultative Verb Compound\, and Aspect markers guo4 and yao4. Complex Clauses and the Aspect marker zheng4 were acquired the latest. Furthermore\, consistent with previous cross-linguistic studies\, the development patterns of a wide range of Mandarin grammatical markers indicate that markers that are more perceptually salient\, obligatory\, have clear form-meaning mappings and often appear in isolation or utterance-final position ware acquired earlier than others. \n\nChi-Lin\n\nTitle:  \nTheory-of-Mind Development in Young Deaf Children With Early Hearing Provisions\n\nAbstract:\nDeaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children born to hearing parents have\nprofound theory-of-mind (ToM) delays\, yet little is known about how providing hearing assistance early in life\, through cochlear implants and hearing aids\, influences their ToM development. We thus addressed (a) whether young DHH children with early hearing provision developed ToM differently than older children did in previous research and (b) what ToM understandings characterize this understudied population. Findings from 84 three- to six-year-old DHH\nchildren primarily acquiring spoken language demonstrated that accumulated hearing experience influenced their ToM\, as measured by a five- step ToM scale.  Moreover\, language abilities mediated this developmental relationship: Children with more advanced language abilities\, because of more time using cochlear implants and hearing aids\, had better ToM growth. These findings demonstrate the crucial relationships among hearing\, language\, and ToM for DHH children\nacquiring spoken language\, thereby addressing theoretical and practical questions about ToM development.

Towsley Foundation Policymaker in Residence Javed Ali will host Janet Reitman from the New York Times Magazine and Heidi Beirich\, Co-Founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism\, for an in-depth conversation on these and related issues. DESCRIPTION:Please contact Beth Demkowski\, demkowsk@umich.edu for Zoom link.\n\nThe era of gravitational-wave astronomy began in 2015 with LIGO's discovery of gravitational waves from merging black holes in 2015. Since then\, LIGO and Virgo have observed dozens of gravitational waves merging black holes and neutron stars\; accurate models of these waves are crucial for learning as much as possible about the waves’ astronomical sources. Models of binary black holes require numerical relativity\, because all analytic approximations fail near the time of merger. While these models are sufficiently accurate for today’s observatories\, avoiding bias in interpreting the waves observed by next-generation observatories on Earth and in space will require next-generation numerical relativity models. In this talk\, I will present some recent results in modeling observations of binary black holes withnumerical relativity\, and I will discuss progress toward simulating merging black holes with SpECTRE\, a next-generation numerical relativity code under development by the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes collaboration.\n

DESCRIPTION:Barbara Jane Reyes is the author of Letters to a Young Brown Girl (BOA Editions\, Ltd.\, 2020). She was born in Manila\, Philippines\, raised in the San Francisco Bay Area\, and is the author of five previous collections of poetry\, Gravities of Center (Arkipelago Books\, 2003)\, Poeta en San  Francisco (Tinfish Press\, 2005)\, which received the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of  American Poets\, Diwata (BOA Editions\, Ltd.\, 2010)\, which received the Global Filipino Literary  Award for Poetry\, To Love as Aswang (Philippine American Writers and Artists\, Inc.\, 2015)\,  and Invocation to Daughters (City Lights Publishers\, 2017). DESCRIPTION:Family Archives and Female Spaces of Intimacy in Early Modern Isfahan\n\nIn seventeenth-century Isfahan\, the authorship of anthologies was a male prerogative. This talk wonders about women who have been excluded from the act of writing their own anthology to consider gendered literacy and female friendship through an anthology collected in the library of the Urdubadi family of bureaucrats and poets. The decisive role of a female family member\, the Urdubadi widow\, whose pilgrimage to Mecca is recorded in this anthology\, divulges her love for a female companion who was forced to leave Isfahan due to rumors circulating about their friendship. How are we to interpret this inclusion? Reading this family history as an archive\, we will see how anthologies document social and affective bonds with kin and with friends\, acts that make the city legible for us and for themselves.

DESCRIPTION:While reproducibility can be an important hallmark of good science\, it is not often the most important indicator. The discipline of metrology\, or measurement science\, describes a measurement result as a value and the uncertainty around that value. We propose a systematic process for considering the sources of uncertainty in a scientific study that can be applied to virtually all\n\ndisciplines of scientific research. We suggest that a research study can be characterized by how sources of uncertainty in the study are reported and mitigated. This approach provides a path for sharing experimental data on complex systems such as biological network processes. A serious challenge for such studies involves collecting experimental metadata and protocol details.\n\nBio:\n\nDr. Plant is currently a NIST Fellow\, focusing on cell imaging and theoretical frameworks for understanding complex biological response in cells. She is an ex officio member of the NIBIB National Advisory Council\, a Fellow of the AIMBE\, and an AAAS Fellow. She previously served as Chief of the Biosystems and Biomaterials Division at NIST\, and in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
