Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled, scrutinized, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. Our data showed a clear order of grammatical marking acquisition among these children and supported findings on the linguistic-specificity of morphological development such that early-and late-acquired markers in English are not acquired in that same order in Mandarin. Negative mei2, bu4, Posessive -de, Classifiers, and the Aspect marker- le were the earliest acquired markers, followed by Modal, Negative bie2, Adverb, Sentence Final Particles, Resultative Verb Compound, and Aspect markers guo4 and yao4. Complex Clauses and the Aspect marker zheng4 were acquired the latest. Furthermore, consistent with previous cross-linguistic studies, the development patterns of a wide range of Mandarin grammatical markers indicate that markers that are more perceptually salient, obligatory, have clear form-meaning mappings and often appear in isolation or utterance-final position ware acquired earlier than others. \r\n\r\nChi-Lin\r\n\r\nTitle: \r\nTheory-of-Mind Development in Young Deaf Children With Early Hearing Provisions\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nDeaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children born to hearing parents have\r\nprofound theory-of-mind (ToM) delays, yet little is known about how providing hearing assistance early in life, through cochlear implants and hearing aids, influences their ToM development. We thus addressed (a) whether young DHH children with early hearing provision developed ToM differently than older children did in previous research and (b) what ToM understandings characterize this understudied population. Findings from 84 three- to six-year-old DHH\r\nchildren primarily acquiring spoken language demonstrated that accumulated hearing experience influenced their ToM, as measured by a five- step ToM scale. Moreover, language abilities mediated this developmental relationship: Children with more advanced language abilities, because of more time using cochlear implants and hearing aids, had better ToM growth. Towsley Foundation Policymaker in Residence Javed Ali will host Janet Reitman from the New York Times Magazine and Heidi Beirich, Co-Founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, for an in-depth conversation on these and related issues. They will explore what key factors led to the insurrection on January 6, what policy gaps were exposed in the run-up to the events, and how different approaches are needed to tackle this threat before it worsens.\r\n\r\nFrom the speakers' bios:\r\n\r\nHeidi Beirich is the Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer for the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, She is an expert on American and European extremist movements, including white supremacy, nativism, antisemitism and anti-government movements. For nearly a decade, Beirich led the Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s Intelligence Project, the premier organization tracking hate and anti-government movements in the United States. \r\n\r\nJanet Reitman is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, covering extremist movements and national security. She has twice been a finalist for the National Magazine Award and is the author of the best-selling Inside Scientology: The Story of America\u2019s Most Secretive Religion (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2011), a NY Times Notable Book. Since then, LIGO and Virgo have observed dozens of gravitational waves merging black holes and neutron stars; accurate models of these waves are crucial for learning as much as possible about the waves\u2019 astronomical sources. Models of binary black holes require numerical relativity, because all analytic approximations fail near the time of merger. While these models are sufficiently accurate for today\u2019s observatories, avoiding bias in interpreting the waves observed by next-generation observatories on Earth and in space will require next-generation numerical relativity models. This talk wonders about women who have been excluded from the act of writing their own anthology to consider gendered literacy and female friendship through an anthology collected in the library of the Urdubadi family of bureaucrats and poets. The decisive role of a female family member, the Urdubadi widow, whose pilgrimage to Mecca is recorded in this anthology, divulges her love for a female companion who was forced to leave Isfahan due to rumors circulating about their friendship. How are we to interpret this inclusion?
