SUMMARY:Exhibition:25th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners is one of the largest exhibitions of art by incarcerated artists in the country. Each year\, faculty\, staff and students from the University of Michigan travel to correctional facilities across Michigan and select work for the exhibition while providing feedback and critique that strengthens artist’s work and builds community around art making inside prisons.\n\nThe pandemic halted the 25th Annual Exhibition days before it was scheduled to open in March 2020. PCAP is excited to bring you the 2020 show in a new digital gallery. Visit https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D for a link to the exhibit and a full calendar of online events.\n\nArtwork sales appointments will be available March 17–March 31\, 2021. Visitors can book sales appointments on the exhibit website. Sales will be made by phone\, and all artwork will be shipped to customers. Artists set their own prices and receive 100% of net sales revenue.\n\nThis exhibit and events are presented with support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, Om of Medicine\, and hundreds of individual donors. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Virtual Family Week | Self-Care: Health & Wellness in the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:During the pandemic we have heard a lot about “self-care\,” but what exactly does that mean? At the most basic level\, it is how we take care of ourselves. The food we eat\, the exercise we do to stay healthy\, and the medicine we take when we get sick. However\, self-care is more than that. It includes all the things we do to stay happy and healthy. That could be taking a walk or a run outside\, or doing some arts and crafts. Maybe it’s playing a favorite sport with friends\, or trying a new recipe. \n\nDuring this virtual Family Week\, we’ll learn about how people in the ancient Mediterranean practiced self-care. We’ll even try out some of their techniques for ourselves.\n\nWe kick off the week with an introductory tour about ancient self-care. Be sure to join us on Sunday\, March 28\, at 2 PM. We will take a closer look at some objects in the Kelsey collection related to health and wellness. Join us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96083862910.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Dancing Productive Missteps: the American Dance Festival at China’s Reform Era
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the paradoxical role that the US played in China’s dance modernization during the Reform Era through a paradigmatic case: for four years (1987-1991)\, teachers from the American Dance Festival\, at the invitation of the Guangdong Dance School\, taught dance techniques and composition and trained the first group of professional modern dancers in China\, most of whom continued on to establish the country’s first modern dance company in 1992. Contesting the presumption that a smoothly-communicated physical and spiritual liberation defined the program\, Professor Miao argues that recurrent reciprocal misunderstandings deeply marked the exchange\, because of the American teachers’ and Chinese students’ profoundly different conceptions of kinesthesia\, pedagogical approach\, and freedom. These missteps generated new methods of dance modernization and significantly shifted the history of Chinese modern dance.\n \n Fangfei Miao\, dance scholar\, choreographer\, and dancer\, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance at the University of Michigan. She received her PhD from UCLA and MFA from the Beijing Dance Academy. Dr. Miao is working on her book manuscript that investigates the productivity of embodied cross-cultural missteps in transforming dance history in China’s Reform Era. Her publications\, in both English and Chinese\, have featured in Dance Research Journal\, Asian Theater Journal\, Journal of Contemporary Research in Dance\, and Journal of the Beijing Dance Academy. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MEMS Graduate Student Showcase 2
DESCRIPTION:Humans and Monsters in Early Medieval Literature\n\nMonsters function as social markers of the feasible and plausible. In dissonance to mainstream social constructs\, they make people uncomfortable and help them project their fears and anxieties. My work seeks to understand the permanence and fluidity of monstrosity in its physical and psychological perceptions and representations in early medieval literature\, taking as samples Beowulf\, the Wonders of the East\, and the Aberdeen Bestiary. \n\nI argue that while monstrosity is inherent to the monstrous individual\, it might have been perceived as permanent but also as changing. For instance\, dragons\, whose monstrosity is embedded in their physicality and inextricable from it\, bear their monstrosity permanently\; however\, Beowulf\, the hero\, bears a fluid monstrosity since he displays chivalrous traits when not in combat while assuming a monstrous nature when acquiring colossal – non-human – strength to overpower Grendel. Through this fluctuation\, I try to understand the relationship between humans and monsters\, and also the capacity of humans to harbor monstrosity.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Non-Equilibrium Control of Quantum Materials: Engineering Crystal Structures With Light
DESCRIPTION:Please contact Beth Demkowski\, demkowsk@umich.edu for Zoom link.\n\nQuantum materials exhibit unique macroscopic phenomena with enormous technological potential\, ranging from high-temperature superconductivity to topologically protected transport. Hence\, at the forefront of condensed matter research is the goal of understanding and controlling their emergent behavior at the smallest length and time scales possible. Due to the strongly intertwined nature of electrons and the crystal lattice in these materials\, manipulating the atomic structure allows one to tune interactions and create novel electronic and magnetic phases.\n\nIn this talk\, I will describe how light can be used to engineer structural distortions in quantum materials on ultrafast time scales\, providing a powerful pathway to realize non-equilibrium states of matter\, often with functionalities not accessible statically. First\, I will illustrate the application of this approach\, based on the resonant excitation of optical phonons and terahertz frequencies\, to the antiferromagnet CoF2. By exploiting lattice anharmonicities\, a transition to a ferrimagnetic phase could be driven with light\, whose magnetization is 100-fold larger than the equilibrium limit. Second\, I will demonstrate that the coupling of optically driven phonons to long-wavelength strain leads to a metastable ferroelectricity in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3\, with the symmetry-broken state remaining for up to hours after excitation. These experiments provide a basis for the rational design of non-equilibrium functionalities\; integrated with targeted materials synthesis\, such control promises to unlock new physical phenomena and enable next-generation quantum and ultrafast technologies.\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI 2020-21 Symposium Speaker - Alexander Weigard\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Group Iterative Multiple Model Estimation (GIMME) framework has emerged as a promising method for characterizing connections between brain regions in functional neuroimaging data. Two of the most appealing features of this framework are its ability to estimate the directionality of connections between network nodes and its ability to determine whether those connections apply to everyone in a sample (group-level) or just to one person (individual-level). However\, there are outstanding questions about the validity and stability of these estimates\, including: 1) how recovery of connection directionality is affected by features of data sets such as scan length and autoregressive effects\, which may be strong in some imaging modalities (resting state fMRI\, fNIRS) but weaker in others (task fMRI)\; and 2) whether inferences about directionality at the group and individual levels are stable across time. This talk will provide an overview of the GIMME framework and describe relevant results from a largescale simulation study that assesses directionality recovery under various conditions and a separate project that investigates the temporal stability of GIMME’s inferences in the Human Connectome Project data set. Analyses from these projects demonstrate that estimates of directionality are most precise when autoregressive and cross-lagged relations in the data are relatively strong\, and that inferences about the directionality of group-level connections\, specifically\, appear to be stable across time. Implications of these findings for the interpretation of directional connectivity estimates in different types of neuroimaging data will be discussed.\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:\n https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwoceGtrz8pHtK1iOVRbvfJz6vx2rMaa-gU

SUMMARY:Other:Thermodynamic and mechanistic studies of CO2 reduction catalysts
DESCRIPTION:The increase in global energy demands\, coupled with growing environmental concerns\, necessitates the development of viable technologies to store solar energy. Towards this end\, my group is focused on developing efficient catalysts that convert CO2 to CO\, methanol or formic acid\,. My talk will first describe our mechanistic studies on known CO2 hydrogenation catalysts\, whereby mechanistic insight is gleaned through thermochemical studies\, and allows for tuning the product selectivity. We also have uncovered a unique mechanism for CO2 hydrogenation\, whereby CO2 must first bind to the ligand before subsequent reduction occurs. I will then discuss how we have used the same thermochemical approach to study the mechanism of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction in a combined carbon capture & reduction system. Finally\, I will present a novel ligand scaffold that\, when put on Co\, allows for both the hydrogenation of CO2 to formate and the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate\; this is unique in that no H2 is produced electrocatalytically. The collective work underscores the importance of the effective hydricity as a parameter of interest and in using thermochemical parameters to rationalize and uncover alternative mechanisms. The studies presented are contextualized in developing an understanding of how to rationally design energy-efficient CO2 reduction catalysts.\nCaroline Saouma (University of Utah)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Varieties of Populists: Paths to Power and Implications for Regime Stability
DESCRIPTION:Scholars have spent more time arguing over definitions of populism than attempting to clearly identify and differentiate among populists. Jones and Menon develop a typology to identify types of populists based on two key dimensions: 1) their position within the political landscape\; and 2) the degree of their ideological commitment to populism. They argue that these distinctions are key to our understanding of how populists gain power and their impact on regime stability and change.\n \nPauline Jones is professor of political science and director of the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum at the University of Michigan (U-M). Previously\, she served as director of U-M’s Islamic Studies Program (2011-14) and of the International Institute (2014-20). Her work has contributed broadly to the study of institutional origin\, change\, and impact with an empirical focus on the former Soviet Union—primarily the five Central Asia states of Kazakhstan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Tajikistan\, Turkmenistan\, and Uzbekistan. Currently\, she is exploring the influence of religion on political attitudes and behavior in Muslim majority states with an emphasis on the relationship between religious regulation\, religiosity\, and political mobilization.\n \nAnil Menon is a political science PhD candidate and Gerald R. Ford Predoctoral Fellow at U-M. His dissertation explores the long-term political legacy of trauma across three different contexts: China\, Germany\, and Northern Ireland.\n \nRegistration is required for this Zoom webinar at https://myumi.ch/QArDq.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Well-being:Worthy Bodies
DESCRIPTION:Register: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events\n\nAll trans people are beautiful\, and that sentiment is not always expressed. In times of isolation and disconnect from community\, transgender and nonbinary individuals can lose sight of self-love and body positivity.\n\nIn Part 1\, we will explore the topic of body positivity through the lens of the wellbeing model. The workshop will focus on collectively building a more trans-inclusive idea of body positivity based on our experiences and identities. By incorporating other transgender and non-binary voices in the workshop\, the space will also explore what self-love looks like and how you can build a body-positive self-image.\n\nIn Part 2\, we will continue diving into how to cultivate a body-positive self-image. Through personal reflection and group conversations\, we will explore our own body origin stories and how body policing manifests within transgender and non-binary communities. With a focus on narratives and experiences\, the workshop will provide participants with strategies to reframe and cultivate body positivity for ourselves\, our relationships and our communities.\n\nAttendance for Part 1 isn't required for Part 2\, nor is it a commitment to attend Part 2. For both workshops\, participants are encouraged to wear an article of clothing\, accessory\, or outfit that validates your identity and expression.\n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event\, fill out our Event Accessibility Form\, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess.
