Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled, scrutinized, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. These missteps generated new methods of dance modernization and significantly shifted the history of Chinese modern dance.\r\n \r\n Fangfei Miao, dance scholar, choreographer, and dancer, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance at the University of Michigan. She received her PhD from UCLA and MFA from the Beijing Dance Academy. Dr. Miao is working on her book manuscript that investigates the productivity of embodied cross-cultural missteps in transforming dance history in China\u2019s Reform Era. The potential negative outcomes are often large and can be associated with loss of life as well as significant adverse financial and reputational impact. This seminar will illustrate, using real world examples, how and why proactively managing risk is critically important in achieving short and long term success.\r\n\r\nBios:\r\nJoe Dyer is a consultant in the tech, aerospace and defense markets and the Chief Strategy Officer for the National Spectrum Consortium. He operates at the intersection of technology, finance, and risk. He chaired NASA\u2019s Aerospace Safety and Advisory Panel for almost 13 years. He is often quoted in the WSJ, NYT, and AW&ST. He received the James H. Doolittle award in recognition of outstanding engineering achievement in aerospace. \r\n\r\nHe was Business Unit President, COO, and Chief Strategy Officer at iRobot Corp. He came to iRobot from a career in the U.S. Navy where his last assignment was as the three-star Commander of the Naval Air Systems Command. He was the Navy\u2019s senior, uniformed acquisition\/procurement official. His naval career also included positions as naval aviation\u2019s chief engineer, Commander of the Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division, and F\/A-18 program manager. Earlier in his career, he served as the Navy\u2019s chief test pilot and as an operational naval aviator flying from the decks of aircraft carriers around the world.\r\n\r\nJoe holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University and a master\u2019s degree in finance from the Naval PostGraduate School in Monterey, California. He is an elected fellow in the Society of Experimental Test \r\nPilots and the National Academy of Public Administration.\r\n\r\n\r\nMr. Frost has extensive experience in systems safety engineering in the aerospace field. The breadth of his experience spans several decades with the U.S. Army where he served in numerous positions including as the Chief of System Safety Engineering of the Army\u2019s Electronics Command, Chief of the Army\u2019s Missile Command\u2019s Safety Office responsible for safety engineering support for Army missiles and Missile Command\u2019s Operations, and he was the first Chief of the Safety Office for the Army Aviation and Missile Command and responsible for the safety of Army missiles and aircraft worldwide. In January of 2006, he was appointed to the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP) which is tasked with advising the NASA Administrator and Congress on the effectiveness of NASA safety programs. Mr. Frost is a Senior member of the International System Safety Society and a Professional Member of the American Society Of Safety Engineers and remains active in various System Safety organizations and initiatives. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1972 from the University of Virginia where he was a DuPont Scholar. He then joined the Army\u2019s Safety Engineering Intern Program through which he earned a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M, specializing in Safety Engineering. technological potential, ranging from high-temperature superconductivity to topologically protected transport. Hence, at the forefront of condensed matter research is the goal of understanding and controlling their emergent behavior at the smallest length and time scales possible. Due to the strongly intertwined nature of electrons and the crystal lattice in these materials, manipulating the atomic structure allows one to tune interactions and create novel electronic and magnetic phases.\r\n\r\nIn this talk, I will describe how light can be used to engineer structural distortions in quantum materials on ultrafast time scales, providing a powerful pathway to realize non-equilibrium states of matter, often with functionalities not accessible statically. First, I will illustrate the application of this approach, based on the resonant excitation of optical phonons and terahertz frequencies, to the antiferromagnet CoF2. By exploiting lattice anharmonicities, a transition to a ferrimagnetic phase could be driven with light, whose magnetization is 100-fold larger than the equilibrium limit. Second, I will demonstrate that the coupling of optically driven phonons to long-wavelength strain leads to a metastable ferroelectricity in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3, with the symmetry-broken state remaining for up to hours after excitation. Two of the most appealing features of this framework are its ability to estimate the directionality of connections between network nodes and its ability to determine whether those connections apply to everyone in a sample (group-level) or just to one person (individual-level). However, there are outstanding questions about the validity and stability of these estimates, including: 1) how recovery of connection directionality is affected by features of data sets such as scan length and autoregressive effects, which may be strong in some imaging modalities (resting state fMRI, fNIRS) but weaker in others (task fMRI); and 2) whether inferences about directionality at the group and individual levels are stable across time. This talk will provide an overview of the GIMME framework and describe relevant results from a largescale simulation study that assesses directionality recovery under various conditions and a separate project that investigates the temporal stability of GIMME\u2019s inferences in the Human Connectome Project data set. Analyses from these projects demonstrate that estimates of directionality are most precise when autoregressive and cross-lagged relations in the data are relatively strong, and that inferences about the directionality of group-level connections, specifically, appear to be stable across time. Towards this end, my group is focused on developing efficient catalysts that convert CO2 to CO, methanol or formic acid,. My talk will first describe our mechanistic studies on known CO2 hydrogenation catalysts, whereby mechanistic insight is gleaned through thermochemical studies, and allows for tuning the product selectivity. We also have uncovered a unique mechanism for CO2 hydrogenation, whereby CO2 must first bind to the ligand before subsequent reduction occurs. I will then discuss how we have used the same thermochemical approach to study the mechanism of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction in a combined carbon capture & reduction system. Finally, I will present a novel ligand scaffold that, when put on Co, allows for both the hydrogenation of CO2 to formate and the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate; this is unique in that no H2 is produced electrocatalytically. The collective work underscores the importance of the effective hydricity as a parameter of interest and in using thermochemical parameters to rationalize and uncover alternative mechanisms. Jones and Menon develop a typology to identify types of populists based on two key dimensions: 1) their position within the political landscape; and 2) the degree of their ideological commitment to populism. They argue that these distinctions are key to our understanding of how populists gain power and their impact on regime stability and change.\r\n \r\nPauline Jones is professor of political science and director of the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum at the University of Michigan (U-M).
