Each year\, faculty\, staff and students from the University of Michigan travel to correctional facilities across Michigan and select work for the exhibition while providing feedback and critique that strengthens artist’s work and builds community around art making inside prisons.\n\nThe pandemic halted the 25th Annual Exhibition days before it was scheduled to open in March 2020. PCAP is excited to bring you the 2020 show in a new digital gallery. Visit https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D for a link to the exhibit and a full calendar of online events.\n\nArtwork sales appointments will be available March 17–March 31\, 2021. Visitors can book sales appointments on the exhibit website. Sales will be made by phone\, and all artwork will be shipped to customers. SUMMARY:Film Screening:CMENAS Virtual Viewing: *Stray*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cmenas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘Stray'”\n \nAbout the film:\nThrough the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul\, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter\, Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture.\n \nZeytin\, fiercely independent\, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night\; Nazar\, nurturing and protective\, easily befriends the humans around her\; while Kartal\, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site\, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin\, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.\n \nWhether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins\, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages\, protesters without arms\, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.\n\nCo-sponsor: Michigan Theatre

SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Virtual Family Week | Self-Care: Health & Wellness in the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:During the pandemic we have heard a lot about “self-care\,” but what exactly does that mean? At the most basic level\, it is how we take care of ourselves. The food we eat\, the exercise we do to stay healthy\, and the medicine we take when we get sick. However\, self-care is more than that. It includes all the things we do to stay happy and healthy. That could be taking a walk or a run outside\, or doing some arts and crafts. Maybe it’s playing a favorite sport with friends\, or trying a new recipe. \n\nDuring this virtual Family Week\, we’ll learn about how people in the ancient Mediterranean practiced self-care. We’ll even try out some of their techniques for ourselves.\n\nWe kick off the week with an introductory tour about ancient self-care. Be sure to join us on Sunday\, March 28\, at 2 PM. We will take a closer look at some objects in the Kelsey collection related to health and wellness. Join us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96083862910.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Literature in Albania from Communism to the Present
DESCRIPTION:Under the communist regime (1944-91)\, Albanian literature followed two separate and antithetical paths: on the one hand\, writers turned to socialist realism for official literature that supported the state’s propaganda\, while on the other authors writing in prisons or labor camps joined an underground literature of opposition to Enver Hoxha’s regime. Subject to harsh censorship and persecution\, some oppositional writers managed to escape Albanian Communism\, going into exile to publish books critical of the regime. Those who remained in Albania were silenced until the collapse of the regime. \n\nComing from three different generations\, the authors on this panel share their experiences of the totalitarian regime and its aftermath\, and reflect on the role of literature in Albanian society: how does literature represent and transfigure experiences of violence and oppression? What is the place of exile in national literature? What is the role of literature in the memory culture of a post-communist society? What\, indeed\, is the status of literature in contemporary Albania?\n \nLisandri Kola is an author\, scholar\, and translator. He taught Albanian Literature of Exile at the University of Michigan (Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures)\, and Albanian Modern Literature\, History of Albanian Sonnet\, Translation Studies\, and Comparative Literature at the University of Tirana. Kola is the author of many books\, among them *A Poem of Love* (Albanian-English-Serbian)\, *Flutrat vdesin në maj/Butterflies Die in May*\, *Sonete/Sonnets*\, and *Saga e nji dite/Saga of a Day\,* among many others. He has translated into Albanian language\, Longinus\, Alda Merini\, Fernando Pessoa\, Luigi Pirandello\, Saint Anthony of Padua\, and has in progress Rime of Guido Cavalcanti. Selected poetry and prose of L. Kola are translated into Montenegrin\, English\, German\, and French languages. He was awarded the Albanian National Prize Át Zef Pllumi in poetry (2014). Lisandri Kola obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Tirana in 2014. See his poetry at http://www.kens.al/revista/kolonakens/a_poem_of_love.pdf\n \nLuljeta Lleshanaku is an Albanian poet. She studied Albanian philology & literature at the University of Tirana\, and later she graduated with a MFA from Warren Wilson College\, USA. She attended The International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 1999 and was awarded a writer’s fellowship from the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas (2008-09). She is the author of nine poetry collections in her language and fourteen other collections published in translation in other languages. Five of her books in translation are published in English. Her last poetry collection in English is *Negative Space*\, published by New Directions in the USA and by Bloodaxe Books in the UK\, was a winner of the English PEN award\, a finalist for the GRIFFIN International Poetry Prize 2019 in Canada\, and a finalist for PEN America 2019. She has worked as journalist\, TV author\, university lecturer\, and a historical researcher. See her poetry at https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/luljeta-lleshanaku\n \nPrimo Shllaku was born in Shkodra\, a town in the north of Albania of great cultural primacy\, which lasted until the time the communist regime was set up. His father was a theater director and uncle a prominent translator of ancient Greek and Latin. Shllaku studied Albanian language and literature at the State University of Tirana. For several years he taught in different schools and different levels of school in Tirana as well as in different villages. Beginning in the late 1980s he taught at the University of Shkodra. Later he taught Albanian and French in Greece as well as Albanian at the University of Belgrade. In 2010 he received a doctorate in literary sciences\, after which he has been teaching a History of Esthetical Doctrines at the University of Fine Arts in Tirana. See his poetry at http://www.albanianliterature.net/authors/modern/shllaku/shllaku_poetry.html\n \nRegistration is required for this Zoom webinar at https://myumi.ch/wlGA7\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Robotic Manipulation under Transparency and Translucency from Light-field Sensing
DESCRIPTION:From frosted windows to plastic containers to refractive fluids\, transparency and translucency are prevalent in human environments. The material properties of translucent objects challenge many of our assumptions in robotic perception. For example\, the most common RGB-D sensors in robotic applications require the sensing of an infrared structured pattern from a Lambertian reflectance of surfaces. As such\, transparent and translucent objects often remain invisible to robot perception. Thus\, introducing methods that would enable robots to correctly perceive and then interact with the environment would be highly beneficial. Light-field (or plenoptic) cameras\, for instance\, which carry light direction and intensity\, make it possible to perceive visual clues on object surfaces from reflection and refraction. In this dissertation\, we explore the inference of transparent and translucent objects from plenoptic observations for robotic perception and manipulation. We propose a novel plenoptic descriptor\, Depth Likelihood Volume (DLV)\, that incorporates multi-view plenoptic observations to represent depth. The depth of a pixel is then represented as a distribution rather than a single value. Through the DLV distribution\, we can infer the layered translucency structure of the scene with transparent and translucent objects for robot manipulation tasks. Building on the DLV\, we present the Plenoptic Monte Carlo Localization algorithm\, PMCL\, as a generative method to infer 6-DoF poses of objects in settings with translucency. PMCL is able to localize both isolated transparent objects and opaque objects behind translucent objects using a previously computed DLV. We evaluate PMCL by comparing x estimated poses against ground-truth poses and demonstrate the use of these pose estimates for object pick and place tasks. The uncertainty induced by transparency and translucency for pose estimation increases greatly as scenes become more cluttered. However\, robot grasping does not necessarily require estimation of 6-DoF object poses. Given multi-view plenoptic observations\, we propose GlassLoc to localize feasible grasp poses over a pile of transparent objects. In GlassLoc\, a convolutional neural network is introduced to learn DLV features for classifying grasp poses with grasping confidence. GlassLoc also suppresses the reflectance by checking pixel consistency over multi-view plenoptic observations\, which leads to more stable DLV representation. We evaluate GlassLoc in the context of a pick-and-place task for transparent tableware in a cluttered tabletop environment. We further observe that the transparent and translucent objects will generate distinguishable features in the light-field epipolar image plane\, which provides information about the object location. With this insight\, we propose Light-field Inference of Transparency\, LIT\, as a two-stage generative-discriminative refractive object localization approach. In the discriminative stage\, LIT uses convolutional neural networks to learn reflection and distortion features from photorealistic-rendered light-field images. The learned features guide generative object location inference through local depth estimation and particle optimization. With the LIT pipeline\, we also create the light-field dataset for the task of transparent objects recognition\, segmentation\, and pose estimation. We compare LIT with three state-of-the-art pose estimators to show our efficacy in the transparent object localization task. We also perform a robot demonstration by picking champagne cups up from a textureless table and building a champagne tower using the LIT pipeline.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Racial and Ethnic Disparities: Essential Workers\, Mental Health\, and the Coronavirus Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIt’s clear that the pandemic is disproportionately impacting communities of color. In this study\, we investigate mental health distress among essential workers during the Coronavirus pandemic across race and ethnicity. We evaluate individual responses to the Patient Health Questionnaire and General Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire using unique\, nationally representative\, data set. Our findings suggest that Black essential healthcare workers disproportionately report symptoms of anxiety\; while\, Latino essential health-care workers disproportionately report symptoms of depression. Additionally\, we find that being a Black or Latino essential non-health care worker is associated with higher levels of distress related to anxiety and depression. These findings highlight the additional dimensions to which Black and Hispanic Americans are disproportionately being affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore\, it calls into question how essential worker classifications\, compounded by US unemployment policies\, is potentially amplifying the mental health trauma experienced by workers.\n\nFor information on how to watch this lecture and sign up for the SBEE mailing list to receive notice of upcoming events\, please visit the SBEE website:\nhttps://umbee.github.io/SBEE_Seminars

SUMMARY:Presentation:Using Artificial Intelligence for Optimal Truck Platooning under Uncertainties
DESCRIPTION:Truck platooning is the process of using connected vehicle technology to join two or more trucks in a convoy. Platooning is associated with two\, major societal benefits: environmental\, through lowered fuel consumption\, CO2 emission\, and traffic efficiency\, and safety improvement\, through automated driving. Quantification of fuel consumption in platoons depends on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the system\, specifically the resistance or drag force of trucks. While optimization of fuel consumption is pivotal in truck platooning\, analysis of CFD is computationally expensive\, especially when uncertainties are present\, due to geometrical variability of trucks and platoons as well as in wind magnitude and direction. \n\nThis research proposes an artificial intelligence-based surrogate model which enables near real-time optimization of platoon configurations based on fuel consumption and impacts on pavement conditions. Attendees will learn how a deep neural network (DNN) model can be trained using data from CFD simulations that utilize high-performance computing (HPC) resources.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Labor Economics: Marriage and cohabitation. A search and matching equilibrium model.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWhereas marriage is still the dominant framework to raise a family\, competitive partnerships emerge. Facing the increasing proportion of couples likely to cohabit rather than marry\, some provincial governments of Canada have enhanced the commitment related to cohabitation to protect women and children in case of separation. To understand the effects of such a policy on couple formation\, assortative matching and within-household allocation of resources\, we need an equilibrium model of marriage. In this paper\, I propose a search and matching model of marriage with two types of contracts where men and women draw utility from private consumption and leisure\, and may invest in a match specific good. The model is estimated on Canadian data. I then use this model to show how enhancing commitment of cohabiting couples might change the entry and exit rate into cohabitation and marriage\, impact assortative matching and the within-household allocation of the total resources.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Webinar: Understanding the Role Coastal Marshes Play in Protecting Communities from Storm Surge and Flooding
DESCRIPTION:As coastal communities strive to safeguard themselves from increasing storm risks\, they are looking for ways to maximize the protective powers of their natural features such as coastal wetlands. This project closely examined one marsh complex that lies adjacent to Piermont Village along the Hudson River Estuary in New York. Village residents wanted to better understand how Piermont Marsh would buffer their village from storm-induced flooding and waves\, and whether a proposed plan to restore native cattails within a small area of the Phragmites-dominated marsh would lessen its buffering capacity.\n\nIn this webinar\, two members of the project team will explain how the team used state of the art modeling methods to simulate marsh vegetation and storm impacts produced by a series of past and future storm scenarios. By looking back at Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and projecting how much worse the damage could have been without the marsh\, the research team was able to put a dollar value on Piermont Marsh’s buffering services. They will share key takeaways from the research and explain how the findings are informing planning for the marsh and shoreline infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Mode Transitions in Low-temperature Aerospace Plasmas
DESCRIPTION:The seminar is free and open to the public.\nTo request the Zoom link\, please send an email to:\nmipse-central@umich.edu\n\nAbstract:\nLaboratory plasmas can experience abrupt transitions between operating modes during which either the plasma structure or dynamics undergo a sudden change. Nonlinear in nature\, these mode transitions typically result from the existence of multiple stable plasma states. When developing new plasma sources\, transitions between states generally occur in mysterious and oftentimes unexpected ways. Unpredictable mode transitions are particularly problematic to the design of new plasma-based aerospace technologies\, such as electric propulsion systems. Detailed models of mode transition physics and scaling are critical to ensuring new systems behave as expected within their desired operating range. In this talk I will present experimental and theoretical research into the nature of mode transitions for two emerging technologies. The first is the helicon plasma thruster\, an electrodeless propulsion concept relying on radiofrequency plasma heating and acceleration through a magnetic nozzle. The second\, the plasma magnetoshell\, is an aerocapture concept using magnetized plasma to generate drag on a spacecraft entering a planetary atmosphere. I will highlight the potential for new data science techniques to significantly advance the discovery and analysis of plasma mode transitions.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Justin Little is an Assistant Professor in the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics at the University of Washington. He received a BS in Physics and Aero-space engineering from the University of California\, Irvine\, and a PhD in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. Prof. Little’s research focuses on understanding how low-temperature plasma physics influence the performance and design of emerging electric propulsion technologies. His research methods emphasize a close relationship between reduced-order theoretical modeling and innovative experiment design to explore the fundamental scaling of dominant physics. He is a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow and a recipient of the AFOSR Young Investigator Program award.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CCMB / DCMB Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nLarge\, deeply phenotyped cohorts are reshaping the world of environmental epidemiology. Two such “big data” resources that are reshaping how we understand environmental health are electronic health records and human cohorts with genome-wide molecular phenotyping. Each provides a unique perspective that is moving the field closer towards “personalized” insights into environmental health risks. Here I will talk about a series of studies which utilize electronic health records and molecularly phenotyped cohorts to investigate vulnerable populations\, gene-environment interactions\, and epigenetic biomarkers of environmental sensitivity. Together these studies are helping us to understand environmental health risks in a new light.\n\nShort bio:\n\nDr. Cavin Ward-Caviness is a Principal Investigator in the Public Health and Integrated Toxicology Division of the US Environmental Protection Agency. With a background in computational biology and environmental epidemiology\, Dr. Ward-Caviness seeks to understand the environmental factors which influence health in vulnerable populations and the molecular mechanisms that influence environmental health risks. The Ward-Caviness lab uses a variety of “big data” approaches\, and Dr. Ward-Caviness is the PI of the EPA CARES research resource\, which allows researchers to study environmental health effects in vulnerable patient populations\, e.g. individuals with heart failure\, using large electronic health record databases. Dr. Ward-Caviness is also interested in how epigenetics and metabolomics can serve as an early indicator of adverse health effects from chemical and social environmental exposures and in particular how molecular biomarkers can give us insight into how the environment may accelerate the aging process and thus contribute to chronic disease. By integrating molecular and clinical data\, Dr. Ward-Caviness seeks to understand environmental health as a way to advance personalized medicine and reduce health disparities.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:MCAIM Colloquium - Inference for Circadian Pacemaking
DESCRIPTION:Organisms have evolved an internal biological clock which allows them to temporally regulate and organize their physiological and behavioral responses to cope in an optimal way with the fundamentally periodic nature of the environment. It is now well established that the molecular genetics of such rhythms within the cell consist of interwoven transcriptional-translational feedback loops involving about 15 clock genes\, which generate circa 24-h oscillations in many cellular functions at cell population or whole organism levels. We will present statistical methods and modelling approaches that address newly emerging large circadian data sets\, namely spatio-temporal gene expression in SCN neurons and rest-activity actigraph data obtained from non-invasive e-monitoring\, both of which provide unique opportunities for furthering progress in understanding the synchronicity of circadian pacemaking and address implications for monitoring patients in chronotherapeutic healthcare.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michael Beauregard Seminar in Macroeconomics: Exchange Rates and Monetary Policy with Heterogeneous Agents (joint with Adrien Auclert\, Matt Rognlie\, and Martin Souchier)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIntroducing heterogeneous households to a New-Keynesian small open economy model resurrects the real income channel of exchange rates: the rise in import prices from a depreciation lowers households’ real incomes\, and leads them to cut back on spending. This channel counteracts the standard expenditure-switching channel of exchange rates\, and can result in contractionary devaluations. We study the implications of the real income channel for monetary policy. \n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Vincent Hutchings\, the Hanes Walton Jr. Collegiate Professorship in Political Science and Afroamerican and African Studies\, Inaugural Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Even after the historic demonstrations against racially biased policing in the summer of 2020\, most White Americans continue to oppose racially liberal policies such as affirmative action. Social scientists dating back at least as far as Gunnar Myrdal have argued that support for egalitarian policies would increase substantially if Whites only knew about the plight of African Americans. Similarly\, Black support for policies of racial redistribution is also less than monolithic. For example\, some surveys find only tepid support among Blacks for affirmative action or efforts to “defund the police.” Would this support increase if White and Black Americans were informed about the enormous racial wealth gap? We examine this question with two survey experiments fielded online by CloudResearch. Study 1 (N=1\,908) was fielded at the height of the George Floyd demonstrations in June of 2020. Subjects were randomly assigned either to a control condition\, where they were merely provided a definition of the racial wealth gap\, or to one of two treatment conditions that provided a defintion of the racial wealth gap. They were also provided with textual and visual information on the current size of the Black/White racial wealth gap based on information from the 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances. In general\, we find that the treatment conditions do increase information levels on the perceived size of the racial wealth gap\, but they do not increase support for racially redistributive policy proposals. In a second experiment\, scheduled for February of 2021\, we seek to replicate the results of the 2020 experiment and add two additional treatment conditions highlighting the fact that the median household headed by a Black college graduate has less wealth than the median household headed by a White high school dropout. This Study 2 experiment represents an even stronger test of the hypthesis that public support for racially redistributive policies would increase if Americans only knew the truth. We discuss the implications of our findings for the prospects of racial reconciliation in our conclusion.\n\nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99761388651\nOr iPhone one-tap : \n US: +13017158592\,\,99761388651# or +13126266799\,\,99761388651# \nOr Telephone:\n Dial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\n US: +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 646 876 9923 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 669 900 6833 \n Canada: +1 647 374 4685 or +1 647 558 0588 or +1 778 907 2071 or +1 204 272 7920 or +1 438 809 7799 or +1 587 328 1099 \nWebinar ID: 997 6138 8651\n International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/accYW7peUD\n\nOr an H.323/SIP room system:\n H.323: \n 162.255.37.11 (US West)\n 162.255.36.11 (US East)\n 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n 213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n 149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n 64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\n Meeting ID: 997 6138 8651\n SIP: 99761388651@zoomcrc.com

DESCRIPTION:Information on how to participate in this virtual event will be added closer to the event date.\n\nGloria E. Anzaldúa’s writings and life place her somewhat precariously within discussions of both American Philosophy and disability studies. Yet\, to borrow a concept from Rosemarie Garland-Thomson (2011)\, it is precisely due to the “misfit” character of Anzaldúa’s career-long activism\, coalition building\, and writings\, that she is an important figure to analyze within these areas of study. Accordingly\, to place Anzaldúa’s work in relation to American philosophy and disability critique\, I turn specifically to several key concepts from Anzaldúa’s oeuvre that center questions of embodiment\, illness\, and colonial history in a manner that\, I argue\, add resources to a queer crip critique of the ablebodied heteronormativity of institutional medicine across the Americas.\n\nSPEAKER BIO\n\nAndrea Pitts (they/them) is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina\, Charlotte. Their research interests include women of color feminisms\, critical prison studies\, and decolonial theory. They are the author of Nos/Otras: Gloria E. Anzaldúa\, Multiplicitous Agency\, and Resistance (SUNY Press August 2021)\, and co-editor with Mariana Ortega and José Medina of Theories of the Flesh: Latinx and Latin American Feminisms\, Transformation\, and Resistance (Oxford University Press 2020) and Beyond Bergson: Examining Race and Colonialism through the Writings of Henri Bergson with Mark Westmoreland (SUNY Press 2019).
