SUMMARY:Film Screening:Korean Cinema NOW | House of Hummingbird/ 벌새
DESCRIPTION:Access the film through the Michigan Theater here (customer pre-registration required): https://www.michtheater.org/2021-korean-cinema-now/\n\n2018 | 138 Minutes | Bora Kim\n\nFree | Open to the public | In Korean with English subtitles\n\n“There is a certain tentativeness to the 14-year-old Eun-hee (Ji-hu Park) in writer-director Bora Kim’s sure-handed feature debut “House of Hummingbird\,” a tender yet somewhat underpowered coming-of-age film set in the Seoul of 1994. Lonely\, reserved\, and stuck in a dysfunctional household among her frequently quarrelling parents (Seung-Yeon Lee and In-gi Jeong)\, her troublemaking sister Su-hee (Su-yeon Park)\, and bully of a brother Dae-hoon (Sang-yeon Sohn)\, eighth-grader Eun-hee seems to move through life involuntarily\, like a bird with a pair of broken wings. And yet\, she still copes with routine neglect behind a youthful shield of resilience — Kim slowly lays bare Eun-hee’s toughened spirit from a minimalist and acutely feminine perspective.” –Tomris Laffly\, Variety\n\nKorean Cinema NOW 2021 will be presented through a virtual format. Attendees should visit the Michigan Theater website to register for the film on the screening dates. SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CREES Noon Lecture. Poland and Hungary - Two Autocratic Attempts to Overthrow Liberal Democracy
DESCRIPTION:The Polish election results of 2015 seem to have brought Hungarian and Polish development into synchronicity again\, a congruence that has been apparent many times throughout history. At first glance\, it may appear that we are dealing with regimes of an identical nature\, especially taking into account the similarities of the authoritarian politics practiced by Jarosław Kaczyński (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość\, PiS) and Viktor Orbán (Fiatal Demokraták Szövetsége\, Fidesz)\, characterized by a tendency to eliminate autonomous social forces and control mechanisms\, as well as the application of similar ideological frames. But beneath the superficial similarities\, these attempts are aimed at establishing different types of autocratic regimes. Orbán’s regime\, which Dr. Magyar defines as a mafia state\, is built on the twin motivations of power centralization and the accumulation of personal and family wealth\; the instrument of its power is the adopted political family\, freed of the limitations posed by formal institutions. Kaczyński’s regime is better described as a conservative-autocratic experiment\, driven by ambitions of power and ideological inclinations. In this lecture\, Dr. Magyar will offer his comparative assessment of these two regimes.\n \n Bálint Magyar is a Research Fellow at the Central European University (CEU) Democracy Institute (since 2020)\, holding a University Doctoral degree in Political Economy (1980) from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. He has published and edited numerous books on post-communist mafia states since 2013. He was an Open Society Fellow carrying out comparative studies in this field (2015-2016)\, Hans Speier Visiting Professor at the New School (2017)\, Senior Fellow at the CEU Institute for Advanced Study (2018-2019)\, and Research Fellow at the Financial Research Institute (2010-2020). Formerly\, he was an activist of the Hungarian anti-communist dissident movement\, founder of the liberal party of Hungary (SZDSZ\, 1988)\, Member of the Hungarian Parliament (1990-2010)\, and Minister of Education (1996-1998\, 2002-2006).\n \n Registration is required for this Zoom webinar at:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5likEdQMSwCKcWD4qbLTyg\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Dark photons and the cosmic radiation background
DESCRIPTION:The dark photon is a well-motivated extension of the Standard Model which can mix with the regular photon. This mixing is enhanced whenever the dark photon mass matches the primordial plasma frequency\, leading to resonant conversions between photons and dark photons. These conversions can produce observable cosmological signatures\, including distortions to the cosmic radiation background. In this talk\, I will discuss a new analytic formalism for these conversions that can account for the inhomogeneous distribution of matter in our universe\, leading to new and revised limits on the mixing parameter of light dark photons derived from the COBE/FIRAS measurement of the cosmic microwave background spectrum. I will then describe some ongoing work on a dark sector model that can explain the longstanding ARCADE radio background excess through resonant conversions of dark photons.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Area Brown Bag:
DESCRIPTION:Ariana\n\nTitle:\nExamining witnesses’ backlash against the target’s response to gender microaggressions \n\nAbstract:\nResearch on witnessing microaggressions has found that people who witness gender microaggressions against a target subsequently evaluate the target more negatively (e.g.\, less competent). Relatedly\, previous work has found that when targets respond to or confront the microaggression\, their response is often criticized (e.g.\, they are seen as overreacting or troublemakers). In this talk\, I will present results from a pilot study that investigated witnesses’ criticism of a target’s response to gender microaggressions and whether that criticism predicted more negative evaluations about the target. I also examine whether the witness’ gender plays a role in the kinds of criticism given (e.g.\, should have defended herself\, took things personally) and in the evaluations they make (e.g.\, competence\, negative agency).\n\nDesiree\n\nTitle: \nAssessing Men’s Proclivity to Recognizing Subtle Gender Bias Against Women in STEM\n\nAbstract: \nWomen in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM) frequently encounter gender bias (e.g.\, questioning of their STEM ability\, assignment to secretarial roles). Given the subtle and ambiguous nature of contemporary sexism\, people vary in their likelihood of recognizing subtly sexist interactions. Past research demonstrates that women are more sensitive to gender bias and more readily recognize it when it occurs. However\, there remains a dearth of research related to men’s experiences in witnessing bias. In the present research\, we ask: (1) what are the individual difference measures that contribute to men’s proclivity in recognizing subtle gender bias\, (2) what are the affective consequences of recognizing subtle gender bias during group tasks\, and (3) how do men’s affective states after witnessing subtle gender bias influence their interest in working with women in mixed-gendered groups? STEM-identified men read a fake transcript depicting a conversation between 3 STEM-identified college students (1 woman\, 2 men). Participants were exposed to a transcript in which a man demonstrates subtle gender bias against a woman. After reading the transcript\, participants completed measures related to their affect (state and collective)\, their impressions of the interaction (open and closed-ended)\, and behavioral measures related to the students in the transcript. Open-ended responses were coded to determine recognition of bias. Findings and implications for this work are discussed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IISS Book Workshop Series. \"Sainthood and Authority in Early Islam: Al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī’s Theory of wilāya and the Reenvisioning of the Sunnī Caliphate\": Book Workshop with Professor Aiyub Palmer
DESCRIPTION:The IISS is pleased to announce a book workshop with Professor Aiyub Palmer (University of Kentucky) on his fascinating monograph \"Sainthood and Authority in Early Islam\".\n \n The Abstract:\n In his book Aiyub Palmer recasts wilāya (\"sainthood\") in terms of Islamic authority and traces its development in both political and religious spheres up through the 3rd and 4th Islamic centuries. This book pivots around the ideas of al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī\, the first Muslim theologian and mystic to write on the topic of wilāya.\n \n By looking at its structural roots in Arab and Islamic social organization\, Prof. Palmer has reframed the discussion about sainthood in early Islam to show how it relates more broadly to other forms of authority in Islam. This book not only looks anew at the influential ideas of al-Tirmidhī but also challenges current modes of thought around the nature of authority in Islamicate societies.\n\nRegister at https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIldeugpjkqGdH8DlDmEUC3-FqLIhk6ZRCF

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Interregional Contact and National Identity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe study the long-run effects of contact with individuals from other regions on beliefs\, preferences and the formation of a shared national identity. We combine a natural experiment\, therandom assignment of male conscripts to different locations throughout Spain\,with tailored survey data. Being randomly assigned to complete military service outside of one’s region of residence fosters contact with conscripts fromother regions\, and increases sympathy towards people from the region of service\, measured several decades later. We also observe an increase in identification with Spain for individuals originating from regions with peripheral nationalism. Our evidence suggests that intergroup exposure in early adulthood canhave long-lasting effects on individual preferences and identity formation.\n\nFor information on how to watch this lecture and sign up for the SBEE mailing list to receive notice of upcoming events\, please visit the SBEE website:\nhttps://umbee.github.io/SBEE_Seminars

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Making the Case for Liberal Education (Concluding Plenary Session)
DESCRIPTION:Join us this winter term for the continuation of our public colloquium series exploring the values\, dimensions\, and outcomes of liberal arts education\, and how they might be measured. In virtual panel discussions and seminars focused on measuring the liberal arts\, academic leaders\, researchers\, faculty members\, and national experts will gather to consider issues long central to liberal arts education\, as well as its status now and in the future.\n\nA panel of academic leaders will consider how a focus on the lives students lead beyond college\, on the outcomes of liberal arts education\, can make the case for it. What outcomes are most pertinent\, and most exciting? Which outcomes should be measured\, and then marshalled? Panelists will also address what they most want to know about liberal education\, and how the College and Beyond II project can help to explore those questions.\n\nVisit the College and Beyond II: Liberal Arts and Life Colloquium Series website for more information on this and all upcoming events: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/liberalarts\n\nZoom – Registration Required:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_osP7agnvQq-7nMR7kJHBmw\n\nConcluding Plenary Session Speakers: \n\nRebecca Blank\, Chancellor\, University of Wisconsin-Madison\n\nDouglas Haynes\, Vice Chancellor for Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion\, Professor of History\, University of California\, Irvine\n\nRenu Khator\, Chancellor\, University of Houston System\, and President\, University of Houston\n\nCostas Spirou\, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs\, Professor of Sociology and Public Administration\, Georgia College & State University\n\nAnne Curzan (moderator)\, Dean\, College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Geneva Smitherman Collegiate Professor of English Language and Literature\, Linguistics\, and Education\; Arthur F. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Labor Economics: nterdependent Values in Matching Markets: Evidence from Medical School Programs in Denmark (joint with Martin Hackmann\, Adam Kapor\, Sofia Moroni\, Anne Brink Nandrup)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis paper studies imperfect information and interdependent values in matching markets\, with an application to Danish medical school programs. We combine unique data on college applicants’ program preferences\, programs’ admission decisions\, and student outcomes to provide direct evidence on the value of screening and the winner’s curse in matching markets. To this end\, we leverage the two-tiered Danish admission system with predetermined shares of GPA-based and program-specific screening-based admissions. We first use an RD design to document that applicant screening provides extra information over GPA on program completion. We then take advantage of an information experiment where one medical program intensified their screening efforts in a difference-in-difference design. While this program substantially increased completion rates after the reform\, their experiment worsened the winner's curse in the rival program\, providing direct evidence for common values. In the second part of the analysis\, we develop and estimate a structural model that yields these empirical facts as equilibrium outcomes of a two-sided matching market. Our counterfactual analysis aims to analyze potential inefficiencies of the current DA mechanism by allowing for alternative information structures and assessing changes in players’ strategies and welfare outcomes.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Assessing the Progress of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Initiatives in the College of Engineering: Student Perceptions of the Climate at the University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan College of Engineering is nearing the end of its five-year strategic plan to improve the climate on campus with regards to Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI). As part of that plan\, focus groups were held with students across every department and program in the College of Engineering\, to gather qualitative data that can serve as metrics to consider how the DEI strategic plan is progressing. Over thirty focus groups were held with more than 220 undergraduate and graduate students across the College in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years. Students were asked about various elements of their perception of DEI\, including factors that impacted their sense of inclusion\, if they had been treated differently based on their identity\, and their perceptions of the College and their department with regards to diversity. The data collected in these focus groups illuminates the nuance and complexity of the engineering student experience\, and how that experience\, and their perceptions of DEI in the College\, can vary based on their identities and home department.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Physics of Partially Magnetized ExB Plasmas in the Laboratory and Space
DESCRIPTION:The seminar is free and open to the public.\nTo request the Zoom link\, please send an email to:\nmipse-central@umich.edu\n\nAbstract:\nPartially magnetized plasma is a regime where the electron dynamics across the magnetic field are controlled by the magnetic field. The electron Larmor radius is much smaller than the macroscale (e.g.\, geometric scale of the domain or device size)\, while the ion Larmor radius is much larger. Ions are weakly affected by the magnetic field. Such regimes occur in parts of Earths’ ionosphere\, the solar chromosphere\, and collisionless shocks in space. In natural conditions\, the electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field is often created due to the relative flow of the electrons and ions. In laboratory and technological plasmas\, an external electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field is applied so that the ions can be extracted and accelerated by the electric field\, while the electrons remain trapped by the magnetic field enhancing the discharge efficiency. Such cross-field (or ExB) discharges are widely used in magnetron sputtering devices for material processing and plasma electric propulsion such as Hall thrusters. Despite their long history\, many aspects of ExB physics are only qualitatively understood precluding the predictive modeling of\, for example\, the next generation of Hall thruster for space propulsion or the theoretical prediction of ionosphere irregularities. Quantitative characteristics of nonlinear plasma instabilities\, plasma turbulence\, and associated anomalous transport remain poorly understood. Physics of instabilities and transport in partially magnetized ExB plasmas will be discussed\, presenting recent advances in analytical theory and numerical approaches\, and highlighting critical questions and problems. \n\nAbout the Speaker: \nAndrei Smolyakov is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at the University of Saskatchewan\, Canada. He received his MSc. (Diploma of Engineer-Physicist) and Ph.D. (Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences) degrees in 1983 and 1986\, respectively\, both from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology\, Russia. His research interests include basic plasma physics with applications to magnetic fusion\, laboratory plasmas\, and plasma for electric pro-pulsion. He is a Fellow of American Physical Society\, Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers\, and a Professional Engineer registered in the Province of Saskatchewan. He is a member of the editorial boards for several plasma physics journals and is an Associate Editor for Physics of Plasmas of AIP.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:2021 David Noel Freedman Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Objects form the critical deposits of museums and archives. This becomes obviously true in the case of biblical museums and archives that desperately rely upon material remains to bring the Bible to life. These archives have been central to Biblical Studies and the maintenance of the Bible as a product of imperial modernity. The Bible as a text and archive plays a critical role in the production and maintenance of the narratives of racial capitalism\, a central aspect of Western modernity. By examining the language and ephemera of contemporary readers\, who have been racialized by imperial logics that produce Bible translations and narrativize objects in archives\, this presentation situates the geography of contemporary racialized readers as the site from which to develop an archive of the Bible. Local geographies\, both the specific geography of the context of the Bible and the geography of a modern reader\, are seen as productive challenges to the universalizing myths of modernity. Greater attention to contextual languages and experiences offer opportunities to unmask the cultural and geographical boundedness of stories\, objects\, and lives that form the core deposit of the Bible.\n\nPlease register here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_d4hdv79nRRO1MpB0zbNDCQ

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The First Measurement of the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment from the Fermilab Muon g-2 Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Department Colloquium Link: http://myumi.ch/GkgBm\n\nThis colloquium will cover the physics and methods behind Fermilab's Muon g-2 experiment\, along with the long-awaited results from Run-1. The experiment was undertaken to resolve the tension between the Standard Model and the previous measurement taken at Brookhaven National Labs. The measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is $a_\mu(FNAL) = 116592040(54)×10^{−11}$. This result is in good agreement with Brookhaven's previous measurement. The new world average\, $a_\mu(Exp) = 116592061(41)×10^{−11}$\, shows a difference from the theoretical value\, $a_\mu(Exp) = 116591810(43)×10^{−11}$\, of 4.2 standard deviations\, strongly hinting at physics beyond the Standard Model. The experiment requires the simultaneous measurement of the muon precession frequency\, the magnetic field\, and the muons' distribution in the field. All three of these measurements will be discussed in context\, along with the main systematic corrections and uncertainties.\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:MCAIM Colloquium - Black Hole Imaging: First Results and Future Vision
DESCRIPTION:In April 2017\, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) carried out a global Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observing campaign at a wavelength of 1mm that led to the first resolved image of a supermassive black hole. For the 6.5 billion solar mass black hole in the giant elliptical galaxy M87\, the EHT estimated the spin orientation and constrained models of accretion on Schwarzschild radius scales. This work relied on two decades of technical advances in ultra-high resolution interferometry and theoretical General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. This talk will review these advances and recent new EHT results. We will also look to the next decade when a next-generation EHT (ngEHT) that doubles the number of participating radio dishes in the VLBI network will enable time-lapse movies of M87 that link the black hole to the relativistic jet it powers. For SgrA*\, the Galactic Center black hole that evolves on time scales 1000 times faster\, ngEHT will produce real-time video.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michael Beauregard Seminar in Macroeconomics: Skewed Business Cycles (joint with Sergio Salgado and Nicholas Bloom)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nUsing firm-level panel data from the US Census Bureau and almost fifty other countries\, we show that the skewness of the growth rates of employment\, sales\, and productivity is procyclical. In particular\, these distributions display a large left tail of negative growth rates during recessions and a large right tail of positive growth rates during booms. We find similar results at the industry level: industries with falling growth rates see more left-skewed growth rates of firm sales\, employment\, and productivity. We then build a heterogeneous-agents model in which entrepreneurs face shocks with time-varying skewness that matches the firm-level distributions we document for the United States. Our quantitative results show that a negative shock to the skewness of firms’ productivity growth (keeping the mean and variance constant) generates a persistent drop in output\, investment\, hiring\, and consumption. This suggests the rising risk of large negative firm-level shocks could be an important factor driving recessions. \n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Perspectives on Contemporary Korea 2020-21 | South Korean Film Industry Conference
DESCRIPTION:Register for the conference here:\nhttps://myumi.ch/yK21R\n\nSouth Korean cinema provides one of the most striking case studies of non-Western cinematic success in the age of the neoliberal world order\, in which Hollywood dominates the global movie consumer’s heart\, mind\, and soul. Against the onslaught of US products in the world’s media marketplace\, South Korean cinema has successfully defended itself. In 2001\, South Korea became the first film industry in recent history to reclaim its domestic market from Hollywood. In 2006\, local films had a 67 percent market share—the highest such figure in the world except for the US and India—and they have continued to maintain a market share of around 50 percent in the 2010s (52 percent in 2019). Admissions per capita in 2019 also reached 4.37\, up from 1.1 in 1998 and 2.92 in 2010\, the highest around the globe\, when it was 3.5 in the U.S. The number of screens in Korea has soared\, from 511 in 1997 to 3\,079 in 2019. Based on the increasing numbers of moviegoers and domestic films produced\, South Korea has become one of the world’s major film markets (ranked 5th in 2020). Adding to this success\, the high-quality South Korean local product has flowed outward to global film markets to connect with international audiences in commercial cinemas\, in art theaters\, and at major international film festivals. Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy (2003) received the Grand Prix at the Cannes International Film Festival. Hong Sang-soo had great success in Cannes\, Berlin\, and Locarno with Hahaha (2010)\, Right Now\, Wrong Then (2015)\, and On the Beach at Night Alone (2017). Other breakthrough auteurs\, art-house and genre-bending specialists alike\, followed: Lee Chang-dong\, Im Sang-soo\, Kim Jee-woon\, Ryoo Seung-wan and Kim Ki-duk. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite marked the culmination of South Korean cinema’s global success. Parasite became the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars (2020)\, and swept other major awards including Best Director\, Screenplay\, and International Feature.\n\nIn English-language academic circles\, likewise\, interest in South Korean cinema as a serious scholarly subject has been growing exponentially. The evolution of South Korean cinema scholarship has been noteworthy. Such scholars as Isolde Standish\, David James\, Rob Wilson\, Kyung Hyun Kim\, Soyoung Kim\, Paul Willemen\, and Kathleen McHugh initially ignited the field of South Korean cinema studies and\, almost simultaneously\, two monographs followed in the UK and US: Hyangjin Lee’s Contemporary Korean Cinema: Culture\, Identity and Politics (2000) and Kyung Hyun Kim’s The Remasculinization of Korean Cinema (2004). Since then\, the field has witnessed a blossoming of South Korean cinema studies in the form of monographs\, edited volumes\, and special issues. Although the field has recently greeted many significant scholarly achievements that have extensively discussed South Korea’s cinematic legacies\, it is still difficult to find scholarly articles on pre-1990s South Korean films – and almost none are available on films from the 1970s and 80s. There is also a shortage of articles on individual films and directors\, and no systematically structured book-length study on the South Korean film industry has been published as of the time this conference is being prepared.\n\nThe South Korean Film Industry conference will bring together scholars from major sites of Korean film and media Studies research in the Anglophone world (including Canada\, U.S.\, U.K.\, and Australia) with scholars from Korea and Singapore for an interdisciplinary dialogue on the diversity and complexity of the South Korean film industry. This conference aims to showcase innovative scholarly work examining wide-ranging coverage of subjects such as the production\, exhibition and distribution of South Korean cinema\, state policy and censorship\, coproduction\, film festivals and cinephilia\, independent cinema\, and Hallyu and the global reception of South Korean cinema. \n\nFull conference details and schedule available at:\nhttps://myumi.ch/1p0b3\n\nWednesday\, April 14\n\n7:00-8:00pm Panel 3: Transformation of the South Korean Film Industry 2\n\nChair: Daniel Herbert (University of Michigan)\n\nThe South Korean Animation Industries\nDaniel Martin (KAIST)\n\nKorean Remakes of Korean Films\nSeung-Ae Lee (Macquarie University)\n\n8:10-9:30pm Panel 4: Film Cultures\n\nChair: Irhe Sohn (Smith College)\n\nSong Kang-Ho\, A Star of New Korean Cinema\nNoh Kwang-woo (Korea University)\n\nReel Heritage: the History of the Korean Film Archive and Film Restoration\nAriel Schudson (Film Archivist)\n\nCreating a “Cheerful” Cinema: South Korea’s Cold War Regimes and State Film Censorship\, 1960s-1980s\nHye Seung Chung (Colorado State University)\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at ncks.info@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Crisis in Myanmar: Repression\, Resistance\, Repercussions
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nDavid I. Steinberg\, Distinguished Professor of Asian Studies Emeritus\, Georgetown University\, Washington\, DC \n\nMoe Thuzar\, Fellow and Co-coordinator\, Myanmar Studies Programme\, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute\, Singapore\n\nCo-moderated by John Ciorciari\, Director\, Weiser Diplomacy Center\, University of Michigan\, and Donald K. Emmerson\, Director\, Southeast Asia Program\, Stanford University\n\nShocking events obliterate context. The coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021 is a case in point. Who could imagine the cruelty of the Burmese generals who on February 1st 2021 grabbed power and proceeded to retain it by arresting thousands and murdering hundreds of its local opponents? Who expected that on February 2nd the country’s youth would launch a nonviolent Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and keep it going and growing against such massively intimidating odds? In this webinar\, two experts will provide the essential but all too often missing contexts—current and historical\, domestic and foreign\, political and socioeconomic—within which the crisis can be understood\, its future projected\, and its implications assessed. To those ends\, the on-the-ground knowledge\, personal experience\, and close observer's insights of Burmese scholar Moe Thuzar will interact with the insights of American professor David Steinberg based on his Burmese experiences and scholarship dating back into the 20th century. \n\nThe webinar will consider in particular what the coup and its aftermath may imply for Southeast Asia and its relations with China. Relevant in that regard is the involvement of all four panel members in a recent collection\, The Deer and the Dragon: Southeast Asia and China in the 21st Century—Steinberg and Ciorciari as authors\, Emmerson as editor\, and Thuzar as an analyst who is using the book in her own research. \n\nDavid I. Steinberg is Distinguished Professor of Asian Studies Emeritus\, Georgetown University\, where he directed its Asian studies program (1997-2007). Other positions he has held include the presidency of the Mansfield Center for Pacific Affairs and Southeast Asia-related US foreign-policy posts as a member of the Senior Foreign Service. He has also represented The Asia Foundation in South Korea\, Burma\, Hong Kong\, and Washington\, D.C. His 15 books and monographs include one translation\, more than 150 articles\, and several hundred op-eds.. Among these books are: Myanmar: The Dynamics of an Evolving Polity (ed.\, 2015)\; Burma/Myanmar: What Everyone Needs to Know (2013\, 2nd edition)\; Modern China-Myanmar Relations: Dilemmas of Mutual Dependence (with Fan Hongwei\, 2012)\; Turmoil in Burma: Contested Legitimacies in Myanmar (2006)\; Burma: The State of Myanmar (2001)\; and Burma’s Road to Development (1981). His expertise includes the two Koreas\, about which he has written widely. Professor Steinberg was educated at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies\, Harvard University\, Darmouth College\, and Lingnan University in Canton (now Guangzhou)\, China.\n\nMoe Thuzar joined the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore in 2008. Her responsibilities there have included managing or co-managing its Myanmar Studies Programme\, serving as a lead researcher in its ASEAN Studies Centre\, and helping the Centre engage with Myanmar regarding its turn to chair ASEAN in 2014. She spent the 2019-2020 academic year as a Fox International Fellow at Yale University's MacMillan Center researching the socio-cultural underpinnings of Burma’s Cold War foreign policy for her National University of Singapore PhD. Earlier she worked for a decade at the ASEAN Secretariat\, where she headed its Human Development Unit. Her many publications include\, as co-author\, the 2020 and 2019 editions of ISEAS’s widely read State of Southeast Asia: Survey Report. Other recent writing includes chapters and articles in ASEAN-EU Partnerships: The Untold Story (ed.\, 2020)\; the Journal of Southeast Asian Economies (2019)\; Southeast Asian Affairs (ed.\, 2019)\; Human Security Norms in East Asia (ed.\, 2019)\; and\, as co-author\, ASEAN’s Myanmar Dilemma (with Lex Rieffel\, 2018). Earlier works include Myanmar: Life After Nargis (with Pavin Chachavalpongpun\, 2009).
