DESCRIPTION:Access the film through the Michigan Theater here (customer pre-registration required): https://www.michtheater.org/2021-korean-cinema-now/\n\n2018 | 138 Minutes | Bora Kim\n\nFree | Open to the public | In Korean with English subtitles\n\n“There is a certain tentativeness to the 14-year-old Eun-hee (Ji-hu Park) in writer-director Bora Kim’s sure-handed feature debut “House of Hummingbird\,” a tender yet somewhat underpowered coming-of-age film set in the Seoul of 1994. Lonely\, reserved\, and stuck in a dysfunctional household among her frequently quarrelling parents (Seung-Yeon Lee and In-gi Jeong)\, her troublemaking sister Su-hee (Su-yeon Park)\, and bully of a brother Dae-hoon (Sang-yeon Sohn)\, eighth-grader Eun-hee seems to move through life involuntarily\, like a bird with a pair of broken wings. And yet\, she still copes with routine neglect behind a youthful shield of resilience — Kim slowly lays bare Eun-hee’s toughened spirit from a minimalist and acutely feminine perspective.” –Tomris Laffly\, Variety\n\nKorean Cinema NOW 2021 will be presented through a virtual format. SUMMARY:Exhibition:For Your Eyes Only
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This exhibition is designed to be viewed through the gallery window on Thayer St.\n\nYasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\nFor Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance\, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media\, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some\, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous\, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled\, scrutinized\, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender\, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.\n*Southwest Asian/North African\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar \"The Effects of Task Complexity on Group Synergy\"
DESCRIPTION:Join Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\n\nAbstract: Complexity—defined in terms of the number of components to a problem and the nature the inter-dependencies between them—is clearly a relevant feature of all tasks performed by groups. Yet the role that task complexity plays in determining group performance remains poorly understood\, in part because no clear language exists to express it in a way that allows for straightforward comparisons across tasks. Here we avoid this analytical difficulty by identifying a class of tasks for which complexity can be varied systematically while keeping all other elements of the task unchanged. We then test the effects of task complexity in a preregistered\, two-phase experiment in which 1\,200 individuals were evaluated on a series of tasks of varying complexity (phase 1) and then randomly assigned to solve similar tasks either in interacting groups or as independent individuals (phase 2). We find that groups are faster and more efficient than similar sized collections of independent problem solvers for complex tasks but not for simpler ones. Leveraging our highly granular digital data\, we define and precisely measure group process losses and synergistic gains\, and show that the balance between the two switches signs for intermediate values of task complexity. Finally\, we find that groups generate more solutions more rapidly\, and explore the solution space more broadly\, than independent problem solvers\, finding higher quality solutions than all but the best individuals.\n\nDuncan Watts is the author of three books: Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age (W.W. Norton 2003)\, Small Worlds: The Dynamics of Networks between Order and Randomness (Princeton University Press 1999)\, and Everything is Obvious: Once You Know The Answer (Crown Business 2011).

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Lecture Series | Epistemology of the Violets: Heuristics toward a Sensorium of Afro-Japanese Co-creativity
DESCRIPTION:Please note\, all posted event times are in the U.S. Eastern Time Zone.\n\nIn *Development Drowned and Reborn*\, Clyde Woods proposes that we envision new worlds—worlds “more egalitarian and democratic\,” and more committed to “sustainability” and “social\, cultural\, and economic justice”—by way of an epistemology of the blues. The blues are that musical form born in the freedom found in the wake of American slavery. They are characterized by the expressive deviations of the blue note and the transformation of memories of the sounds of the plantation (field hollers\, wailings\, and so on) into something more mellifluous. Woods contends that\, with a bit of synesthesia\, the modes of listening and sounding out afforded by the blues might help us make better sense of the world and give us a sense of how a better world might be. \n	This talk is interested in the formation of what we might call an epistemology of the violets\, or that way of seeing and being in the world at the intersection of the blues and the reds\, with “red” here serving as a chromatic stand in for the epistemological and sensorial insights embedded in Japanese creative works. To date\, Afro-Japanese scholarship has been framed primarily by concepts such as representation and reception. While informative in their own way\, such frameworks prime us to think about transferences from one culture (“blues”) to another (“reds”). Addressing collaborations such as the artwork produced by Pharrell Williams and Murakami Takashi\, this talk provides general heuristics for those interested in the study of the epistemological possibilities of purple\, or a way of seeing and creating possible worlds that is neither red nor blue—neither African American nor Japanese—but both red and blue\, the emergence upon their coalescence. \n \nWill Bridges is Associate Professor of Japanese at the University of Rochester. His scholarship has been recognized by the Fulbright Program\, the Japan Foundation\, the Association for Asian Studies\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. His first monograph\, *Playing in the Shadows: Fictions of Race and Blackness in Postwar Japanese Literature*\, was published in 2020 by the University of Michigan Press. He is currently working on two manuscripts. The first is *The Futurist Turn: The Japanese Humanities and the Re-imagining of the Unwelfare State*. The second is *The Black Pacific: A Poetic History*. He is also an author of creative nonfiction.\n\n\n*This event is cosponsored by the University of Michigan Press.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DISC Distinguished Lecture. Pulling the Past into the Present: Curating Islamic Art in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\; register at https://myumi.ch/gjQWq\n\nThis year's DISC Distinguished Lecture is the keynote for the Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA) 2021 Symposium.\nhttps://lsa.umich.edu/histart/hiaa-symposium.html\n\nDemographic and social change presents museums with challenges at various levels. Islam has become a core reference in public discourse\, which often also affects\, in important ways\, views of collective identity and personal political stances. The dominant place of Islam in global debate does not stop at the doors of our museums. The main argument of this presentation is that exhibitions of Islamic art are\, whether we like it or not\, sites of identity negotiation where relations to ‘me and my world’ are established. Consequentially we could do better to provide visitors with the tools to make the galleries useful to them.\n \nThis talk will take a closer look at the concept of culture underlying exhibition spaces and identity formation with regard to ‘Islam.’ In what ways do the social dynamics surrounding the subject of Islam function\, and how do these impact museum spaces? What role do museums have in these emerging dynamics? And how do curators respond to the shifting needs of visitors? The classical layout and communication strategies of Islamic art collections were often insufficiently framed to address these layered concerns\, despite curators’ knowledge of the rich diversity of Islamicate histories. Thus two main topics will be addressed here: why do we in museums present art\, material culture and archaeology of premodern Islamicate societies as detached from transregional and multi-layered networks in closed culturalistic circles\, while in research we\, hopefully\, go beyond these limitations. And why\, in exhibitions do we still face enormous challenges in enabling visitors to explore the contents and contexts of our objects through various access points? In many cases we fail institutionally in our efforts to awaken the interest and imaginary power in museum visitors.\n \nDuring the last few years\, different curatorial teams nevertheless have strived to discover better techniques and narratives to convey this timely diversity. The Museum for Islamic Art in Berlin hosts one such team\, and I will discuss some successful—and some less successful—examples of experimentation on the ground from the past few years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEMINAR: \"The Interaction of Autonomy & Training for First-Person Drone Flights\" — Missy Cummings
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nTitle:\nThe Interaction of Autonomy & Training for First-Person Drone Flights\n\nAbstract:\nWhile increasing automation has made UAVs\, aka drones\, accessible to a wider population of operators as compared to conventional aviation\, such increased use has led to many preventable accidents. While added automation may make flight control more stable\, the remote nature of the task can lead to degraded situation awareness\, mode confusion and increased crashes. There are competing theories as to how much training and onboard autonomy are needed to successfully train drone operators\, and this effort will discuss the results of a series of three studies that investigate balancing training and autonomy to achieve expertise\, including how hidden Markov models can be used to predict who successfully obtains expertise and when a transition from novice to expert occurs.\n\nBio:\nProfessor Mary (Missy) Cummings received her B.S. in Mathematics from the US Naval Academy in 1988\, her M.S. in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1994\, and her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2004. A naval officer and military pilot from 1988-1999\, she was one of the U.S. Navy's first female fighter pilots. She is currently a Professor in the Duke University Electrical and Computer Engineering Department\, and the Director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory. She is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Fellow\, and a member of several national committees. Her research interests include human supervisory control\, explainable artificial intelligence\, human-autonomous system collaboration\, human-robot interaction\, human-systems engineering\, and the ethical and social impact of technology.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture presents the Annual Gerard M. Faeth Memorial Lecture: Thinking Outside the Sphere: Engineering Challenges and Opportunities for Returning to the Moon
DESCRIPTION:Professor Bonnie J. Dunbar\nJohn and Bea Slattery Chair\nDepartment of Aerospace Engineering\nTexas A&M University\n\nIn 1969\, the first human\, Neil Armstrong\, stepped on the surface of the Moon. He did so at a time when most of the technologies required to do so were in their infancy. Computers were not every desk. Cell phones were a distant vision\, and communication\, navigation and weather satellites did not exist. An International Space Station was the subject of Science Fiction and visionaries. The Apollo program not only propelled the US in the second half of the 20th century\, it created new laboratories\, new technologies\, new graduate degrees and a workforce which expanded this knowledge into the 21st Century globally\, manifesting itself through new companies and enterprises. The Artemis program plans to return the United States to the Moon as early as 2024. However\, new challenges still remain. What are they and how will solving them pave our way to human exploration of Mars? Why does it matter? Dr. Dunbar will describe some of the Apollo events which affected her own academic and professional pathway and explain how similar circumstances for the Artemis Program will help to steer the future for engineering\, science\, and the 21st Century workforce.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Dunbar is a retired NASA astronaut\, engineer and educator\, currently with Texas A&M Engineering as a Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) John and Bea Slattery Chair in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. \nDunbar\, who is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, came to Texas A&M from the University of Houston where she was an M.D. Anderson Professor of Mechanical Engineering. There she provided leadership in the development of a new integrated university science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) center and was Director of the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston. She also taught the Mechanical Engineering “Introduction to Engineering” course\, and directed the SICSA Space Architecture and Aerospace graduate programs. She has devoted her life to furthering engineering\, engineering education\, and the pursuit of human space exploration.\nDunbar worked for The Rockwell International Space Division Company building Space Shuttle Columbia and worked for 27 years at NASA\, first as a flight controller\; then as a mission specialist astronaut\, where she flew five space shuttle flights\, logging more than 50 days in space. She then served for 7 years as a member of the NASA Senior Executive Service (SES). Her management experience included assistant NASA JSC director for university research\; deputy director for Flight Crew Operations\; Associate Director for ISS Mission Operations development\, and as NASA headquarters deputy associate administrator for the Office of Life and Microgravity Sciences and Applications (OLMSA). \nAfter retiring from NASA\, Dunbar became president and CEO of The Museum of Flight in Seattle\, where she established a new Space Gallery and expanded its K12 STEM educational offerings. She has also consulted in aerospace and STEM education as the president of Dunbar International LLC\, and is an internationally known public speaker.\nDunbar holds bachelor and master degrees in ceramic engineering from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in mechanical/biomedical engineering from the University of Houston.\nShe is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society\, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics\, and the Royal Aeronautical Society. She has been awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal five times\, the NASA Exceptional Leadership Medal and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. Dunbar was elected into the Royal Society of Edinburgh\, and to the US National Academy of Engineering. In 2013 she was selected into the Astronaut Hall of Fame\, in 2016\, she was inducted into the Omega Alpha Association (OAA) Systems Engineering Honor Society. From 2017 to 2018\, Dr. Dunbar served as the President of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Evil May Day\, 1517: Xenophobia\, Labour\, and Politics in Early Tudor London
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of May 1\, 1517\, later known as Evil May Day\, an anti-immigrant riot broke out in London. From about nine o’clock in the evening on April 30\, a crowd made up primarily of young male servants and apprentices of craftsmen ran through the streets of the city\, targeting enclaves of strangers\, the contemporary English term for immigrants. This riot tells us a good deal about the internal political economy of early sixteenth-century London. The riot had its genesis in an incendiary combination of labour grievance of young craft workers on the one hand and\, on the other\, implicit encouragement of violence from parts of the city’s merchant oligarchy. The riot was not only an expression of young London artisans’ resentment of “job-stealing immigrants” but an attempt to goad their masters and the governors of their city to be more protective of their interests.\n\nShannon McSheffrey is professor of history at Concordia University. Professor McSheffrey's research interests centre around law\, mitigation\, gender roles\, civic culture\, marriage\, literacy\, heresy\, and popular religion in late medieval and early Tudor England. She has published five books exploring these issues\, including Gender and Heresy: Women and Men in Lollard Communities\, 1420-1530 (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 1995)\; Marriage\, Sex\, and Civic Culture in Late Medieval London (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2006)\; and Seeking Sanctuary: Law\, Mitigation\, and Politics in English Courts\, 1400-1550 (Oxford University Press\, 2017). She is currently writing a book about the Evil May Day riot in London in 1517.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

DESCRIPTION:In this conversation Prof. Anupama Rao will speak about the intersection of her scholarship with her role as Senior Editor\, Comparative Studies in South Asia\, Africa and the Middle East [CSSAAME]. The conversation will focus on “public humanities” as the place where these identities and agendas meet\, often in a discordant and somewhat incommensurable manner.\n \n Prof. Rao will offer a reflection on the question of intellectual labor\, its relationship to the problem of mass intellectuality (from the vantage point as a scholar of Dalit pasts and presents)\, and the University\, especially Columbia University where she is currently conducting archival research for a project called “Ambedkar in America\,” which is linked with the Ambedkar Initiative: https://icls.columbia.edu/initiatives/ambedkar-initiative/\n \n We then draw on ideas of historical comparison\, translation\, and (global) convergence as a useful rubric to guide an open discussion about CSSAAME journal as a particular artefact of collaborative scholarly labor.\n\nRegister here for the Zoom seminar: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcldO-trTsuG9YiSFiwUERIw-HuEXt-8Zkq\n\nCosponsored by the Doctoral Program in Anthropology and History.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Can the arts help to shape a new kind of map?\n\nInternational performing artist Yo-Yo Ma will be joined by U-M President Mark Schlissel and a newly formed Steering Committee of U-M students and Michigan-based artists to kick-off a 6-month artist residency project that explores these questions. They will reflect on the challenges of the past year\, and how the pandemic has radically altered educational modes and dispersed the university's students\, faculty and staff on all three campuses. The event will also incorporate performance and outline ways the audience can get involved in the residency project as it develops.\n\nRegistration required to attend the event: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_YOx3HPGiSbyspNS29bH-gw

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Perspectives on Contemporary Korea 2020-21 | South Korean Film Industry Conference
DESCRIPTION:Register for the conference here:\nhttps://myumi.ch/yK21R\n\nSouth Korean cinema provides one of the most striking case studies of non-Western cinematic success in the age of the neoliberal world order\, in which Hollywood dominates the global movie consumer’s heart\, mind\, and soul. Against the onslaught of US products in the world’s media marketplace\, South Korean cinema has successfully defended itself. In 2001\, South Korea became the first film industry in recent history to reclaim its domestic market from Hollywood. In 2006\, local films had a 67 percent market share—the highest such figure in the world except for the US and India—and they have continued to maintain a market share of around 50 percent in the 2010s (52 percent in 2019). Admissions per capita in 2019 also reached 4.37\, up from 1.1 in 1998 and 2.92 in 2010\, the highest around the globe\, when it was 3.5 in the U.S. The number of screens in Korea has soared\, from 511 in 1997 to 3\,079 in 2019. Based on the increasing numbers of moviegoers and domestic films produced\, South Korea has become one of the world’s major film markets (ranked 5th in 2020). Adding to this success\, the high-quality South Korean local product has flowed outward to global film markets to connect with international audiences in commercial cinemas\, in art theaters\, and at major international film festivals. Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy (2003) received the Grand Prix at the Cannes International Film Festival. Hong Sang-soo had great success in Cannes\, Berlin\, and Locarno with Hahaha (2010)\, Right Now\, Wrong Then (2015)\, and On the Beach at Night Alone (2017). Other breakthrough auteurs\, art-house and genre-bending specialists alike\, followed: Lee Chang-dong\, Im Sang-soo\, Kim Jee-woon\, Ryoo Seung-wan and Kim Ki-duk. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite marked the culmination of South Korean cinema’s global success. Parasite became the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars (2020)\, and swept other major awards including Best Director\, Screenplay\, and International Feature.\n\nIn English-language academic circles\, likewise\, interest in South Korean cinema as a serious scholarly subject has been growing exponentially. The evolution of South Korean cinema scholarship has been noteworthy. Such scholars as Isolde Standish\, David James\, Rob Wilson\, Kyung Hyun Kim\, Soyoung Kim\, Paul Willemen\, and Kathleen McHugh initially ignited the field of South Korean cinema studies and\, almost simultaneously\, two monographs followed in the UK and US: Hyangjin Lee’s Contemporary Korean Cinema: Culture\, Identity and Politics (2000) and Kyung Hyun Kim’s The Remasculinization of Korean Cinema (2004). Since then\, the field has witnessed a blossoming of South Korean cinema studies in the form of monographs\, edited volumes\, and special issues. Although the field has recently greeted many significant scholarly achievements that have extensively discussed South Korea’s cinematic legacies\, it is still difficult to find scholarly articles on pre-1990s South Korean films – and almost none are available on films from the 1970s and 80s. There is also a shortage of articles on individual films and directors\, and no systematically structured book-length study on the South Korean film industry has been published as of the time this conference is being prepared.\n\nThe South Korean Film Industry conference will bring together scholars from major sites of Korean film and media Studies research in the Anglophone world (including Canada\, U.S.\, U.K.\, and Australia) with scholars from Korea and Singapore for an interdisciplinary dialogue on the diversity and complexity of the South Korean film industry. This conference aims to showcase innovative scholarly work examining wide-ranging coverage of subjects such as the production\, exhibition and distribution of South Korean cinema\, state policy and censorship\, coproduction\, film festivals and cinephilia\, independent cinema\, and Hallyu and the global reception of South Korean cinema. \n\nFull conference details and schedule available at:\nhttps://myumi.ch/1p0b3\n\nThursday\, April 15\n\n7:00-8:00pm Panel 5: BIFF\, Film Criticism\, and Transnationality\n\nChair: Markus Nornes (University of Michigan)\n\n“Festival or Box Office? SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Past\, Present\, and Future of Christianity in Science Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Science fiction has engaged with religious ideas and topics throughout its history. It also has unique ways of approaching a religion such as Christianity with its strong historical focus. On the one hand\, time travel technology means that one can visit the first century to look for Jesus or attempt to witness the resurrection. On the other hand\, stories of humanity’s distant future among the stars allows reflection on where our past and present trajectories might take our religious traditions. Stories set in the very near future also provide opportunities to explore possible reactions to new technologies or alien encounters. This presentation will provide a survey of treatments of these topics as we consider how the history of science fiction provides insights on the history of Christianity.\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, April 15 from 7-8:30pm EDT.\n\nPlease register here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QyDBm-8uRV67pLu8EDIfKA\n\n*Co-sponsored by the Michigan Center for Early Christian Studies and the UM Department of Middle East Studies*
