“There is a certain tentativeness to the 14-year-old Eun-hee (Ji-hu Park) in writer-director Bora Kim’s sure-handed feature debut “House of Hummingbird,” a tender yet somewhat underpowered coming-of-age film set in the Seoul of 1994. Lonely, reserved, and stuck in a dysfunctional household among her frequently quarrelling parents (Seung-Yeon Lee and In-gi Jeong), her troublemaking sister Su-hee (Su-yeon Park), and bully of a brother Dae-hoon (Sang-yeon Sohn), eighth-grader Eun-hee seems to move through life involuntarily, like a bird with a pair of broken wings. And yet, she still copes with routine neglect behind a youthful shield of resilience — Kim slowly lays bare Eun-hee’s toughened spirit from a minimalist and acutely feminine perspective.” –Tomris Laffly, Variety

Yasmine Nasser Diaz is the 2021 Efroymson Emerging Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.

For Your Eyes Only is the latest iteration of multidisciplinary artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz’s bedroom installation. At first glance, the constructed space is a shimmering homage to the bedroom disco—a sanctuary for uninhibited dance and self-expression. It has also become the setting from which many personal videos are made and shared widely on social media, where platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have blurred the boundary between public and private. Projected into the space is a montage of casual videos shared by female-identifying and non-binary persons of SWANA* origin dancing solo in their rooms. To some, the videos may seem innocent and innocuous, but they can also be seen as acts of defiance that assert the autonomy of bodies that have been surveilled, scrutinized, and censored throughout history. Alongside these intimate moments is a separate reel showing political figures and protest movements from the SWANA region. The images demonstrate the fluctuating attitudes and regulations impacting human rights and freedoms based on gender, and exemplify how—whether we are physically at a protest or sharing our physicality in virtual spaces—our bodies are engaged in some level of risk.
*Southwest Asian/North African

This project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

Abstract:
I study how ownership consolidation affects market power on both factor and goods markets, and productive efficiency. I develop a model to separately identify markups, markdowns and productivity using production and cost data. I use it to examine the effects of a large-scale consolidation policy in the Chinese cigarette manufacturing industry. Exploiting size thresholds in the policy, I find that it increased leaf price markdowns by a third, but did not increase markups or productivity. As a result, income inequality between tobacco farmers and manufacturing workers increased by twice as much as it would have without the consolidation.

Abstract: Stein's method is a well-known technique for finding rates of convergence in central limit theory. This talk discusses the use of Stein's method to study discrete representations of high-dimensional distributions that arise in quantum mechanics. These representations can explain how quantum effects result from the interaction of finitely many classical "worlds," with the role of sample size played by the number of worlds. The wave function is then recovered (as a secondary object) from observations of particles in these worlds, without knowing the world from which any particular observation originates. References: McKeague and Levin (2016, Annals of Applied Probability), McKeague, Pekoz and Swan (2019, Bernoulli). No prior knowledge of Stein's method or quantum theory is assumed.

Li Cornfeld: The Digital Tech Expo

In January 2020, more than 170,000 people traveled from around the world to the Las Vegas Strip for CES, the global tech industry’s massive annual convention. In January 2021, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic pushed the event entirely online. Drawing on research conducted both on the ground at CES in the years prior to the pandemic as well as recent research of this year’s “all digital” event, this presentation asks what these dual modes of exhibition suggest about the role of liveness in tech demonstration. This research is in development as part of a book project, tentatively titled The Theater of Invention: Live Performance in the Tech Industry, which explores tech expos and conventions as ritual practices dedicated to legitimizing the industrial imagination of emerging technology.

Sarah Murray: Fashioning Intelligent Bodies: Mid-Century Smart Working Women and Wearability Before the Wearable

Quick, what do Winnie the Welder, Hildy Johnson, and Claire McCardell have in common? This mix of fictional and real figures represent some of the well-dressed women anchoring the U.S. workforce in the early 20th century. In a period shaped by wartime progress, deep nationalism, and technological development, the definition of a fashionable body changed to accommodate anxieties around white working women, class, and new industrial standards. It is not uncommon to trace the history of artificial intelligence to midcentury war efforts in code-breaking, cybernetics, military computing, and early machine learning. This talk offers a different prelude to ordinary A.I., one at the convergence of fashion, women, and work. What does smart mean before it becomes associated with machine intelligence and contemporary consumer tech? What was the idea of intelligence before ‘thinking machines’ were introduced to the public and became a preoccupation of science, industry, and government? The answers are threaded, quite literally, through the design of clothes for work. Widespread connotations associated smart with neat, efficient bodies connected to work outside the home, skill with new machinery, and sensible, store-bought styles. Long before the wearable, an emergent wearability established the properly outfitted worker as a safe site for the union of technology, gender, and labor and signaled a re-coordination of bodies to accommodate shifting meanings of intelligence.

How to Tame a Dragon: Monstrous Bodies and the Ontology of Evil in the Poems of Īrānshāh ibn Abi'l-khayr

Whether externally manifested by demons, or internalized as the human flaws of greed, hatred, and hubris, the nature of evil is a driving question in Iranian mythology and epic, particularly in Firdawsī's famous Shāh-nāma (w. 1010). In dialogue with that work, I will take up the far less well-known example of Īrānshāh b. Abi'l-khayr (fl. ca. 1100), who composed two epics set in the world of the Shāh-nāma that questions the ontology of evil through its treatment of human and monstrous bodies. The Bahman-nāma begins with a prince's desire to avenge the death of his father, an ostensibly admirable goal that soon devolves into an obsessive quest to eradicate every trace of Rustam's semi-demonic family from the earth. The (anti-)hero of the Kōsh-nāma, in contrast, is a hideous demon who commits unspeakable acts for thousands of lines, only to turn over a new leaf at the end of the poem. By following the transformation of these two protagonists, Īrānshāh offers two portraits of evil that complicate questions raised by Firdawsī: what is the line that separates hero and monster? Can evil deeds ever be redeemed, and is the fight against evil necessarily good?

Do you study Russian and want more opportunities to develop your speaking skills in a welcoming and low-stakes environment? Are you looking for an opportunity to socialize with your peers and bond over the difficulties of learning a foreign language? Would you like to learn more about the culture of one of the most politically important and fascinating regions of the world with the coolest undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Michigan?

If the answer to any or all of the above questions is "yes", then you should check out the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures weekly Russian conversation club (called КРЯ - Клуб Русского Языка)! Regular attendance is not mandatory - you can drop in and out as you wish, and club participants are always willing to help each other out with questions about the language during our discussions. We meet in two groups, the first aimed at first-year students or any who are beginning their language study, and the second targeted towards students who have studied the language for at least a year. Participants are also encouraged to join our discord server, where we post weekly meeting announcements and other Russian-language related content.

The central auditory system consists of the brain nuclei that transmit peripheral auditory nerve input to the auditory cortex for hearing perception. Damage to the auditory end organ, the cochlea, can result in hearing loss that drives the central auditory system to disarray causing disorders such as hyperacusis and tinnitus. These disorders can negatively affect patients’ quality of life. Tinnitus sufferers generally describe their tinnitus as a narrowband of sound that occurs in quiet, while hyperacusis sufferers express an exaggerated perception of sound level or intensity. These two disorders are often grouped together because tinnitus sufferers tend to report symptoms of hyperacusis and vice versa. However, hyperacusis and tinnitus do not always co-occur, suggesting that they have different neural origins. To study these conditions, researchers have induced cochlear damage in animal models, followed by behavioral and electrophysiological assessments. However, no study has adequately distinguished hyperacusis from tinnitus in individual animals. In this thesis, I detail the development of a novel hyperacusis and tinnitus assessment paradigm for individual animals using the pinna reflex combined with auditory brainstem responses (ABR). In the first chapter, I detail several enhancements to a computer system that ensures accurate sound presentation concurrently with capture of pinna reflex video data, as well as streamlines the subsequent data analysis. In the second chapter, the ABR, an evoked potential reflecting the summed electrical activity of cells in the auditory brainstem pathway, was assessed. Several studies suggest that ABR-wave characteristics might provide evidence of hyperacusis. ABRs were evoked using conventional and novel sound stimuli. They were then examined to look for possible indications of hyperacusis in noise overexposed guinea pigs. The present findings are discussed with several suggestions for future hyperacusis assessments.

While early nationalist movements led by modernist Muslims were brewing on the coasts of the Malay Peninsula in the early decades of the twentieth century, a competing project – sponsored by the British colonial administration – was underway inland in the Malay states. In the Malay states, the authority of traditional rulers was enhanced through the systematic protection and regulation of Islam and Muslim subjects. Uncovering administrative reports from the colonial archives, I show that there was unprecedented surveillance over two classes of religious activities: conversions into and out of Islam, and the publication and sale of religious materials, both of which served to strengthen and protect traditional authority. With these materials, I explore a hitherto under examined yet concerted imperial project of state-led traditional religious nationalism devised to stem the tide of modernist Muslim and anti-colonial movements in British Malaya.

On January 6, 2021, a group of Trump supporters besieged and breached the US Capitol. The media reaction was swift: different media companies variably called the besiegers insurrectionists, a mob, rioters, citizens, and patriots. The events of January 6 call us to consider how language, media, and law interact to (de)legitimize assemblies of people. It also raises urgent questions about how responses to assemblies are raced, classed, gendered, and always already political. This graduate student roundtable will consider how language, media, and the law interact to channel responses to human assemblies across three different contexts: the English Reformation, eighteenth-century London, and Washington, DC, in the 1990s.

The primary function of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Social Science Methodology (I3SM) is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for students and faculty to present their current projects and to receive feedback on either the methodological component of their project or a methodology under development. Presenters can also present new research questions and ideas and receive ideas about which methodologies would work best to tackle such questions. We define methodology broadly as the approaches to which data is collected and/or organized to give empirical content to social science research. It includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Your graduate degree may seem your greatest achievement. Congratulations. But now may be the time for something totally different. That basically describes my 46-year succession of careers: physics professor, management consultant, statistical taxation consultant, bank operations consultant, engineering information systems manager, security systems developer, public health official, entrepreneur, and corporate executive. Each transition got easier, less threatening, and more rewarding. That seemingly divergent list of positions grew directly out of my physics graduate school experience. Physics is everywhere and a Michigan Ph.D. in physics will open many doors you did not know were there. But you may have a lot of post-doctoral learning to do. Much of that learning will be about yourself. Perhaps I can be of assistance.

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA) created a federal legal process for the return of Native American human remains and cultural items to Native American Tribes and Native Hawaiian Organizations. However, the work that museums and tribes complete together can also be used as an opportunity to create good and lasting relationships that extend beyond NAGPRA.

How can museum best practices and traditional tribal knowledge work together in mutually beneficial ways? How can transparency and mutual respect forge productive relationships between tribes and museums? How can future collaborations emerge as a result of the personal and professional relationships that are developed?

The panelists will provide a basic overview of NAGPRA compliance through a consideration of both the tribal and museum sides of the process. They will also draw from practical experience to show how indigenous knowledge and teachings can help inform and improve professional methods of care and an understanding of the best practices of museums.

Harnessing the Digital Revolution to Build the Water Sector of the Future with Newsha K. Ajami (April 16, 2021 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83618 83618-21438456@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 16, 2021 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Civil and Environmental Engineering

The water sector is at a crossroad. Facing the challenges of ageing infrastructure and a growing population, the sector has to replace and rebuild its existing network, which had enabled our nation’s social and economic growth during the past century. In the meantime, climate change and its impacts on the water cycle have demonstrated the shortcomings and vulnerabilities of our current infrastructure network and its inability to handle extreme and intensified climatic patterns such as floods, droughts, hurricane and wildfires. The need to revisit and reimagine our current infrastructure model is clear, but the path not as much.

The sector can continue to invest in its current infrastructure model or alternatively embrace decentralized, distributed, and nature-based water solutions. These new infrastructure options hold the promise to increase system flexibility and resilience under climate change while taking the pressure off our existing aging infrastructure networks. However, implementation of these solutions still suffers from the rigidity and complexity of our current water use systems, and the fragmented and in some cases outdated governance structures and business model that overlay them.

There is a need to build a diverse financing portfolio and novel governance tools that harnesses our evolving digital economy and could support the sector’s shifting paradigm as it transitions from centralized model to a 21st century hybrid model, encompassing both centralized and decentralized solutions. In this seminar, Ajami will discuss some of these challenges and provide some thoughts on how the sector can take advantage of this once in a century opportunity and aim to transform itself while embracing new solutions and business models.

Newsha K. Ajami directs the Urban Water Policy Program at Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. A leading expert in sustainable water resource management, water policy, and the water-energy-food nexus, she studies the human and policy dimensions of urban water and hydrologic systems. Dr. Ajami served as a gubernatorial appointee to the Bay Area Regional Water Quality Control Board for two terms and is currently a mayoral appointee to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. She has published many highly cited peer-reviewed articles, and contributed opinion pieces to the New York Times and the Sacramento Bee. Dr. Ajami received her Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from the UC, Irvine, an M.S. in hydrology and water resources from the University of Arizona.

CSAS Kavita Datla Memorial Lecture | Muslim Religious Ideas and Identities in Mughal North India (April 16, 2021 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65327 65327-16571521@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 16, 2021 4:30pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for South Asian Studies

What was a Muslim’s religious identity? What were the factors that influenced and shaped the making of his identity? Immediate, pragmatic, or deep historical and ideological? In my lecture I will first mention in brief how the markers of Muslim identity underwent change in the early phases of their evolution. I will then consider in some depth the role of the religious ideas in its formation in Mughal India. The discussion will be with special reference to the debates between the two major Sufi orders of the time, the Chishti and the Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi, on some religious doctrines, ‘narrow’, sectarian or a non-sectarian and ‘pluralistic’. I will also consider some examples from the history of post-Mughal religious and political ideas.

This event is cosponsored by the U-M Global Islamic Studies Center.

Muzaffar Alam is George V. Bobrinskoy Professor of South Asian Languages at the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, the University of Chicago. He is a historian with field specialties in medieval and early modern South Asian Muslim religious and political cultures. His research interests also include comparative history of the Islamic world (as seen from an Indian perspective).

He has held visiting research and teaching positions in several academic institutions in Europe and America. His major publications include *The Crisis of Empire in Mughal North India* (1986, New Oxford India Perennial Edition, 2013); *The Languages of Political Islam in India: c. 1200–1800* (2004); *Indo-Persian Travels in the Age of Discovery: 1400-1800 and Writing the Mughal World: Studies in Political Culture* (co-authored with Sanjay Subrahmanyam, 2007 and 2013).

South Korean cinema provides one of the most striking case studies of non-Western cinematic success in the age of the neoliberal world order, in which Hollywood dominates the global movie consumer’s heart, mind, and soul. Against the onslaught of US products in the world’s media marketplace, South Korean cinema has successfully defended itself. In 2001, South Korea became the first film industry in recent history to reclaim its domestic market from Hollywood. In 2006, local films had a 67 percent market share—the highest such figure in the world except for the US and India—and they have continued to maintain a market share of around 50 percent in the 2010s (52 percent in 2019). Admissions per capita in 2019 also reached 4.37, up from 1.1 in 1998 and 2.92 in 2010, the highest around the globe, when it was 3.5 in the U.S. The number of screens in Korea has soared, from 511 in 1997 to 3,079 in 2019. Based on the increasing numbers of moviegoers and domestic films produced, South Korea has become one of the world’s major film markets (ranked 5th in 2020). Adding to this success, the high-quality South Korean local product has flowed outward to global film markets to connect with international audiences in commercial cinemas, in art theaters, and at major international film festivals. Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy (2003) received the Grand Prix at the Cannes International Film Festival. Hong Sang-soo had great success in Cannes, Berlin, and Locarno with Hahaha (2010), Right Now, Wrong Then (2015), and On the Beach at Night Alone (2017). Other breakthrough auteurs, art-house and genre-bending specialists alike, followed: Lee Chang-dong, Im Sang-soo, Kim Jee-woon, Ryoo Seung-wan and Kim Ki-duk. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite marked the culmination of South Korean cinema’s global success. Parasite became the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars (2020), and swept other major awards including Best Director, Screenplay, and International Feature.

In English-language academic circles, likewise, interest in South Korean cinema as a serious scholarly subject has been growing exponentially. The evolution of South Korean cinema scholarship has been noteworthy. Such scholars as Isolde Standish, David James, Rob Wilson, Kyung Hyun Kim, Soyoung Kim, Paul Willemen, and Kathleen McHugh initially ignited the field of South Korean cinema studies and, almost simultaneously, two monographs followed in the UK and US: Hyangjin Lee’s Contemporary Korean Cinema: Culture, Identity and Politics (2000) and Kyung Hyun Kim’s The Remasculinization of Korean Cinema (2004). Since then, the field has witnessed a blossoming of South Korean cinema studies in the form of monographs, edited volumes, and special issues. Although the field has recently greeted many significant scholarly achievements that have extensively discussed South Korea’s cinematic legacies, it is still difficult to find scholarly articles on pre-1990s South Korean films – and almost none are available on films from the 1970s and 80s. There is also a shortage of articles on individual films and directors, and no systematically structured book-length study on the South Korean film industry has been published as of the time this conference is being prepared.

The South Korean Film Industry conference will bring together scholars from major sites of Korean film and media Studies research in the Anglophone world (including Canada, U.S., U.K., and Australia) with scholars from Korea and Singapore for an interdisciplinary dialogue on the diversity and complexity of the South Korean film industry. This conference aims to showcase innovative scholarly work examining wide-ranging coverage of subjects such as the production, exhibition and distribution of South Korean cinema, state policy and censorship, coproduction, film festivals and cinephilia, independent cinema, and Hallyu and the global reception of South Korean cinema.
