Here we describe an experimental model to interrogate the role of dopamine release during learning and performance of dexterous skill. Fluorescent sensors dLight1.1 and GCaMP are used to monitor dopamine and calcium activity in the striatum and substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) in rats performing skilled reaching tasks. Preliminary experiments have successfully recorded reward-associated signals in both striatum and SNc. Adaptations to the recording setup to facilitate long-term recording in larger rodents are described. Over half of Native American women have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime and approximately 1 in 3 Native American women have been raped, a rate almost twice that reported by non-Hispanic White women (Rosay, 2016). Yet, Native women are often overlooked in national conversations about sexual violence (e.g., the #MeToo movement). This omission precludes understanding of why Native women face disproportionately high rates of violence and what interventions are needed to end this violence. We theorized that the reluctance to address the disproportionate sexual violence Native women experience stems in part from differences in how people explain experiences of rape among Native compared to other women. For example, prior research demonstrates that negative racial stereotypes shape the extent to which people perceive women of color to be \u201clegitimate\u201d victims. We anticipated that explanations of Native (compared to White) women\u2019s experiences of rape would similarly reflect racial biases. Using a mixed method design, we explored individuals\u2019 beliefs about why Native (versus White) women experience high rates of sexual violence. Although data collection is still ongoing (target N = 600 non-Native US adults), this talk will showcase preliminary findings and implications for support for action, reform, and resources for victims.\r\n\r\nSavannah Adams\r\n\r\nTitle:\r\nInvestigating the roles of moral dimensions in social selection \r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nThe goal of this research is to investigate how people consider morality when choosing individuals to fill the various social roles in their lives. Current research on morality recognizes the existence of various dimensions of moral behavior, however the implications of these moral motivations for behavior pose new questions about what effects these might have on selecting good social partners. For example, are some morality dimensions more important than others when forming social judgments? Additionally, in the instance of potential conflict between these moral dimensions, are certain moral dimensions given priority when forming opinions of others? This talk will explore these questions and present the current state of stimuli development for a chain of studies that aims to glean how morality informs social selection across contexts.\r\n\r\nTong Suo\r\n\r\nTitle:\r\nWill Purpose in Life Buffer Stress? Moderation by Culture and Social Status\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nPrior evidence suggests that people who hold a purpose in life are more resilient to adversity. So far, however, this evidence is limited to either self-reported negative emotion or lab-based physiological assessment. It is thus unclear whether purpose in life might predict\r\nreduced physiological stress responses in daily life. Moreover, little is known about who might benefit most from the purpose in life. Here, we addressed these gaps by examining the flattening of diurnal cortisol slopes in Americans and Japanese (N = 989 in total). For Americans, purpose in life predicted a steeper diurnal cortisol slope (indicative of lower daily stress). Moreover, this effect was particularly pronounced for those low in social status. For Japanese, there was no effect of purpose regardless of social status. What makes us feel that we need to learn to code\u2014or else? This common sense has ruled our economic imaginary for at least 30 years. Those who cannot log on or train up are condemned to the margins of the information economy, and contained by the carceral state.\r\n\r\nIn The Promise of Access, Daniel Greene argues that the problem of poverty became a problem of technology in order to manage the contradictions of a changing economy. We cannot debunk or banish the idea\u2014what Greene calls the access doctrine\u2014that the problem of poverty can be solved with the right tools and the right skills because the idea helps those public institutions that face poverty to save themselves. Technological solutions help public institutions simplify their complex missions and win legitimacy and funding, but at the cost of alienating the populations they serve.\r\n\r\nBlending political-economic theory with years of ethnographic fieldwork, Greene explores how this plays out in Washington, DC, examining organizational change in technology startups, public libraries, and charter schools. Tracing the changes to the spirit and structure of these public institutions changes reveals a fight to define the good life under contemporary capitalism--and the alliances that could win that fight.\r\n\r\nSpeaker Bio: Daniel Greene is an Assistant Professor of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. The focus of this paper is to examine various behavioral-, belief-, and norm-based layers of (non-)strategic decision-making that are plausibly affected by existing polarization in the context of Donald J. Trump. I find strong heterogeneous effects: ingroup-love occurs in the perceptional domain (how close one feels towards others), whereas outgroup-hate occurs in the behavioral domain (how one helps\/harms\/cooperates with others). The rich setting also allows me to examine the mechanisms: observed intergroup conflict can be attributed to one's grim expectations about the cooperativeness of the opposing faction, rather than one's actual unwillingness to cooperate. In a final step, I test whether popular behavioral interventions (defaults and norm-nudging) can eradicate the detrimental impact of polarization in the contexts studied here. In this talk, I will lay out a research agenda in this direction, and invite you to join me.\r\n\r\nCiera Martinez, Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences Lead, Berkeley Institute for Data Science, University of California \u2013 Berkeley\r\n\r\nOpen science in the wild: principles to build reproducible and collaborative data analysis workflows\r\n\r\nThe academic research system is not built to incentivize open science practices, but transparency and reproducible methodology allows researchers to critically assess and build upon results to fuel scientific discovery and supports a more collaborative and equitable research community. Open science and data practices are often presented as ideals, but rarely do we train for how to handle the intricacies that emerge from every unique research project life cycle. In this talk I will present the ERP (Explore, Refine, and Produce) workflow \u2013 a three-phase data analysis workflow that guides researchers to create reproducible and responsible data analysis workflows. Each phase is centered on how to make decisions based on the audience the research is communicated, the research products created, and the career aspirations of the researchers involved. She has authored several articles and one book chapter regarding the early people of the lower Rio Verde of Oaxaca, as well several articles on population and dental variation in New World populations. Dr. Mayes has received and participated in research grants and awards including the National Geographic Society, SDSU University Grants Program, NSF, and the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.\r\n \r\n The Global Project in Applied Social Sciences (GPASS) is a collaboration between area studies centers at the International Institute and Washtenaw Community College with the goal of developing new curriculum related to applied social sciences through global studies content. Stauffer, PhD has been the Ann Arbor Farmer\u2019s Market Manager since May 2020, bringing 12 years of local food expertise to the role. She is the former Program Manager of Tilian Farm Development Center, a now defunct incubator for beginning farmers in Ann Arbor Township. She has also taught the Sociology of Race and Ethnic Relations at Washtenaw Community College since 2015, with an emphasis on food sovereignty and environmental justice movements. As a veteran Ypsilanti Farmer\u2019s Markets vendor who sells her products at Argus Farm Stop and to local restaurants as well, she has been feeding our community since 2010 as Nightshade Farm. She is also a board member of Growing Hope, a former Greenbelt Advisory Commissioner, and a former board member of the Ypsilanti Food Cooperative. As a farmer, farmer\u2019s market vendor, educator, activist, and beginning farmer mentor, she has been deeply rooted in our local food system since her dissertation project on sustainable agriculture brought her back to Michigan in 2008. \r\n\r\nIn 2014, she traveled to Slow Food International\u2019s Salone del Gusto e Terra Madre in Torino, Italy as a US delegate representing Southeast Michigan family farmers, food artisans, and Slow Food Ark of Taste producers.\r\n\r\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. While earlier generations of research at the site focused on the monumental pyramids, temples, and palaces that are its most visible remains, a new project at the site aims to reconceptualize these scattered monuments as parts of an ancient city.
