Students are often taught in social science courses that they are socially constructed categories. But what does that exactly mean? Are these definitions of race and ethnicity globally universal or should they be? In this webinar, I challenge the U.S. and Euro-centric understanding and applications of race and ethnicity. By introducing different theoretical approaches to define race and ethnicity in sociology, I discuss how these concepts should be understood, treated and applied in our analysis. In nutshell, race and ethnicity are malleable categories across time and space; they are subject to change depending on local and global conditions. This talk looks at consciousness from the perspective of theoretical computer science. It formalizes the Global Workspace Theory (GWT) originated by cognitive neuroscientist Bernard Baars and further developed by him, Stanislas Dehaene, and others. Our major contribution lies in the precise formal definition of a Conscious Turing Machine (CTM), also called a Conscious AI. We define the CTM in the spirit of Alan Turing\u2019s simple yet powerful definition of a computer, the Turing Machine (TM). We are not looking for a complex model of the brain nor of cognition but for a simple model of (the admittedly complex concept of) consciousness. After formally defining CTM, we give a formal definition of consciousness in CTM. We then suggest why the CTM has the feeling of consciousness. Interviews with 16 adults revealed how participants either had to engage in risky behavior to have their needs met or avoid risk and not have those needs met. They contribute to understandings of risk, its impact on physical and psychological health, and the importance of accommodations. The study expands insight into early responses to the pandemic among individuals with long-term physical disabilities from marginalized communities. It helps elucidate how socioeconomic status and race\/ethnicity can differentially impact the lives of adults with physical disabilities and further marginalize a population that is \u201calways already\u201d vulnerable. This knowledge can expand awareness and appreciation of how social, economic, and political systems are structured and integrated into future clinical guidelines and emergency response policies and more adequately addressed.\r\n\r\nThis webinar is free and open to the public. Taking the normative perspective of civilian immunity from military attack, Dr. Moses argues that the implicit hierarchy of international criminal law, atop which sits genocide as the \u201ccrime of crimes,\u201d blinds us to other types of humanly caused civilian death, like bombing cities, and the \u201ccollateral damage\u201d of missile and drone strikes. Talk of genocide, then, can function ideologically to detract from systematic violence against civilians perpetrated by governments of all types. \u201cThe Problems of Genocide\u201d contends that this violence is the consequence of \u201cpermanent security\u201d imperatives: the striving of states, and armed groups seeking to found states, to make themselves invulnerable to threats.\r\n \r\n Bios:\r\n\r\n A. DIRK MOSES is Frank Porter Graham Distinguished Professor of Global Human Rights History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since July 2020. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. From 2000-2010 and 2016-2020, he taught at the University of Sydney. Between 2011 and 2015, he held the Chair of Global and Colonial History at the European University Institute, Florence.\r\n \r\n His first book, \u201cGerman Intellectuals and the Nazi Past\u201d (2007), was awarded the H-Sozu-Kult \u201cHistorical Book of the Year\u201d prize for contemporary history. Dr. Moses has also written extensively about genocide and global history. Recent anthologies include \u201cPostcolonial Conflict and the Question of Genocide: The Nigeria-Biafra War, 1967\u20131970\u201d (2018), \u201cThe Holocaust in Greece\u201d (2018), and \u201cDecolonization, Self-Determination, and the Rise of Global Human Rights Politics\u201d (2020). Dr. Moses has been senior editor of the \u201cJournal of Genocide Research\u201d since 2011, and co-edits the War and Genocide book series for Berghahn Books.\r\n \r\n GEOFF ELEY is Karl Pohrt Distinguished University Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1979. He previously taught at the University of Cambridge (1975-79). Trained originally as a modern German historian, he also works in modern British history, as well as on a general European front. He is interested in both the history of the Left and the history of the Right; history and film; historiography; and history and theory. He recently began teaching a large new undergraduate course on the History of Terrorism.\r\n \r\n His earliest works were \u201cReshaping the German Right: Radical Nationalism and Political Change after Bismarck\u201d (1980, 1991) and (with David Blackbourn) \u201cThe Peculiarities of German History\u201d (1980, 1984).
