Next, he will discuss the boom of Protestantism, especially Pentecostalism, from 0 to 20, 30, or even 40% in some countries. In the final segment of his lecture, Dr. Gooren will discuss the major change in the Central American religious landscape is the rise of the no religion category, going up from near 0 to 4-10% in only 40 years.\r\n\r\nHenri Gooren (PhD Anthropology, Utrecht University, the Netherlands) is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of Religious Studies at Oakland University in Rochester MI. His books are Rich Among the Poor (1999), Religious Disaffiliation and Conversion: Tracing Patterns of Change in Faith Practices (2010), and the Encyclopedia of Latin American Religions (ed. 2019). Dr. Gooren publishes extensively on conversion models and on multiple religions in Latin America: 12 encyclopedia entries, 17 book chapters, and 19 journal articles.\r\n\r\nThis is the third a six-lecture series. However, this sequestering of \u201courselves\u201d from \u201cthem\u201d has become increasingly untenable due to globalization and massive demographic changes in North America. This webinar discusses the challenges and possible methods for breaking through the separation of area studies (especially Japanese studies and East Asian studies) and ethnic studies by discussing two courses that I regularly teach -- \u201cColonialisms in Asia\u201d and \u201cThe Asia-Pacific Wars\u201d -- in which race, sex, gender and imperialism are key themes. These are modern phenomena that trouble the regions we Asia \u201cexperts\u201d study and the places in which we live, teach and work. But an obscene screen sequesters these two knowledge formations, making it difficult for scholars of Asia to teach critically about racism in North America as well as about the U.S. and Canada as empires. While we Asia \u201cexperts\u201d are normally assigned to study the people and nations \u201cover there,\u201d this webinar proposes that we need to refuse the disciplinary practices that the Cold War University has imposed upon us. The webinar will also propose that while important, linking Asian and Asian North American studies can only be one part of confronting the global problems of racism and empires.\r\n \r\nTakashi Fujitani is a Professor in Asia-Pacific Studies at the University of Toronto. These robots are powered by the coordination of various systems to perceive the world and effect motion control. Crucially, the autonomous vehicle operates in an open environment alongside fellow road users with whom it will interact regularly. Predictions of fellow road users' intents and future motion guide these interactions and specify a large part of the autonomous vehicle's behavior. Spurred by advances in deep learning, recent prediction methods have increasingly begun to consider how interactions affect future motion in ever more varied environments. The corresponding gains in accuracy translate to more anticipatory and less reactive autonomous vehicle behavior. One drawback is an increase in complexity, which can lead to less interpretable predictions and behavior. Achieving realtime performance and handling missing data caused by adverse sensing conditions present additional challenges.\r\n\r\nTo support autonomous vehicle behavior that is transparent and predictable, this thesis develops interpretable prediction methods. Model-based approaches provide the vehicle for building interpretable predictions, and novel inference procedures are developed to generate the predictions in realtime. Adopting a probabilistic framework enables natural handling of missing data and affords the flexibility to model interactions in varied environments beyond those described by existing interpretable methods.
