SUMMARY:Other:Become a UROP Research Mentor
DESCRIPTION:Submit a Research Project for the 2021-2022 Academic Year: https://lsa.umich.edu/urop/research-mentors.html\n\nUROP Research Mentors are faculty and post-doc researchers from across all U-M's 19 Schools and Colleges who provide undergraduate student researchers an opportunity to engage in research activities that help them learn about the pursuit of knowledge within an academic discipline. This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration\, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention\, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy | Getting Started: Challenges and Opportunities in Anti-racist Pedagogy in Premodern Japanese Literature
DESCRIPTION:Advance registration for this Zoom webinar is required:\nhttps://myumi.ch/BoYbQ\n \n Part of the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy webinar series:\nhttps://myumi.ch/88W5V\n \n Teaching about race and ethnicity through premodern Japanese literature poses a formidable challenge. This is not only because we lack a robust body of scholarship trained on this lens to assign on syllabi\, but also because we have lacked academic gatherings such as RaceB4Race\, where medievalists working on Europe have begun to think about the possibilities of race as an analytical category in relation to medieval texts. This presentation is therefore a call to getting started\, to think creatively about how we can incorporate existing scholarship on social marginality\, precarity\, and otherness (on outcastes and pollution\, on Hansen’s disease\, on slavery and indentured servitude\, on illness\, on animals) to help students make broader connections.\n \n Vyjayanthi Selinger is an Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Bowdoin College. Her research examines literary representations of conflict in medieval Japan\, war memory\, legal and ritual constraints of war\, Buddhist mythmaking\, and women in war.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange

SUMMARY:Other:From Rescue to Rebuild: Developing a National ECE System That Works
DESCRIPTION:Between historic bipartisan investments to stabilize and expand access to child care in 2020 and new proposals from Congress and the Biden Administration\, the nation is poised to significantly increase access to quality early childhood education (ECE). These investments are acutely needed to ensure that all children—particularly children from families with low incomes—have access to high-quality ECE\; working and middle class families have access to affordable care\; and early educators are supported and adequately compensated.\n\nAs Congress and the Administration consider their next major investments in ECE\, however\, they need a vision for a new and better system. How do we ensure that our many early childhood programs—including child care subsidies\, Head Start\, state preschool\, and special education programs—can be a system of coherent support from birth through early elementary? Experts will address this question in an upcoming webinar\, “From Rescue to Rebuild: Developing a National ECE System That Works.” The webinar will focus on long-term federal policy solutions to build a comprehensive\, equitable\, and integrated early learning system\, drawing from the work of the Learning Policy Institute and New America\, as well as the authors of Cradle to Kindergarten: A New Plan to Combat Inequality. It will also address concrete actions that policymakers can take in the near term with federal stimulus funds.\n\nPlease register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pKpDoK9bSZiiSidYPJdFSw \n\nSpeakers:\n\nLaura Bornfreund\, Director\, Early and Elementary Education\, New America\n\nAjay Chaudry\, Professor\, New York University and former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Human Services Policy at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services\n\nLinda Darling-Hammond\, President and CEO\, Learning Policy Institute \n\nU.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT)\n\nHanna Melnick\, Senior Policy Advisor\, Learning Policy Institute\n\nChristina Weiland\, Associate Professor of Education\, University of Michigan\n\nAdditional speakers to be added.\n\nRelated Resources\nBuilding a National Early Childhood Education System that Works (brief)\n\nCradle to Kindergarten: A New Plan to Combat Inequality\, 2nd Edition (book)\n\nSupporting Early Learning in America: Policies for a New Decade (report)\nChild Care in Crisis: Can Biden’s Plan Save It? SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:WISE Science Communication- Calling BS
DESCRIPTION:The best laid plans can go awry with poorly thought through conclusions drawn from otherwise accurate data. Learn to identify misleading results (deliberate or accidental) in research with an exercise from the famous University of Washington course Calling Bullshit.\n\nWe'll look at an example from science media\, from a researcher\, and from an NIH report\, each of which have serious but easy to miss errors but still got published. Just what is wrong with the papers? How did the editors neglect to find the issue with their conclusions? Why did the scientist who wrote up the results not see their own error? (spoiler alert- the answer to all these questions is usually bias or outright discrimination) \n\nWe'll answer these questions in person on North Campus. The rest of the course is available for free online for you to follow up or bring back to your colleagues to continue the discussion.\n\nRegister here:: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/43035

SUMMARY:Performance:(CANCELLED)San Fermin: The Cormorant I + II Voices Tour - Rescheduled from 6/1/20
DESCRIPTION:A huge part of The Cormorant is the lush vocal texture throughout\, from our singers Allen Tate\, Claire Wellin\, and Karlie Bruce\, as well as guests like Samia\, Eliza Bagg (Lisel)\, and Sarah Pedinotti (Lip Talk). In planning this tour\, San Fermin thought it would be cool to highlight this aspect of the music\, stripping down the instrumental arrangements and allowing the singers to take center stage. You’ll see a different\, quieter side of San Fermin\, more vulnerable and intimate.
