I will draw from my experiences teaching at a small U.S. Midwestern liberal arts college, for a 100-level course titled \"Reading the World: Social Justice,\" my version of which is themed around narratives of Japanese American incarceration during World War II. The course explores these narratives as an active and enduring presence in the lives and politics of the present--in the United States, at its borders, and beyond them. My students and I consider Japanese American incarceration in conversation with Indigenous sovereignty and settler colonialism; the incarceration of Japanese Latin Americans; present-day activism around migrant detention at the U.S.-Mexico border; and the ongoing work of redress and repair with respect to structural\/interpersonal racism and antiblackness in the United States.\r\n \r\n I will discuss the writing and discussion prompts I use to engage students across different levels of familiarity with literary analysis\/Japanese American studies\/social justice, as well as my errors and successes in developing a classroom community that strives to be antiracist in its daily praxis; emphasizes experimentation over mastery; and scaffolds opportunities for students to bring the world into the classroom, and their learning into the world. Adnan resides in Dear\u00adborn, a quick drive from the Cass Cor\u00adri\u00addor neigh\u00adbor\u00adhood that houses his stu\u00addio. He bought the his\u00adtoric Astro build\u00ading in 2011 with an ambi\u00adtious plan to develop it into a mul\u00adti\u00adfunc\u00adtional space, includ\u00ading an exquis\u00adite gallery, gift shop, two store-fronts and his sprawl\u00ading sub\u00addi\u00advided stu\u00addio. That plan has come to life with the help of archi\u00adtects and design\u00aders, and he con\u00adtin\u00adues to focus his energy on both his art\u00adwork and his com\u00admu\u00adnity involvement.\r\n\r\nAdnan was fea\u00adtured on the PBS series Arab-Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Sto\u00adries in 2012. Recently he was nom\u00adi\u00adnated for a Smith\u00adson\u00adian Fel\u00adlow\u00adship and was hon\u00adored by the Arab Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Cham\u00adber of Com\u00admerce. In addi\u00adtion, he has served on the boards of sev\u00aderal arts insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, and has exhib\u00adited all over the United States and inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adally, in Europe, Africa, and the Mid\u00addle East. \r\n\r\n\u201cIn gen\u00aderal, my art should be viewed as a visual rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of the human con\u00addi\u00adtion. The real\u00adiza\u00adtion of my thoughts and emo\u00adtions through the cre\u00adation of my art is a way for me to express my inner self. In turn, I under\u00adstand that my inner self is merely a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar man\u00adi\u00adfes\u00adta\u00adtion of the human con\u00addi\u00adtion that con\u00adnects every\u00adbody, and so it may be said that by express\u00ading my inner self and reveal\u00ading per\u00adsonal truths, I am attempt\u00ading to reveal truths about us all.\r\n\r\nMore specif\u00adi\u00adcally, the cre\u00adation of my art is an attempt to estab\u00adlish my iden\u00adtity, and to resolve my inner con\u00adflicts that have arisen from grow\u00ading up as a for\u00adeigner in diverse com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties. Born in Lebanon, raised partly in Sierra Leone, and finally in Amer\u00adica, I have always been aware of my diverse sur\u00adround\u00adings as an out\u00adsider, and, in turn, how oth\u00aders have viewed me as dif\u00adfer\u00adent. These cir\u00adcum\u00adstances have com\u00adpelled me through\u00adout my life to con\u00adtem\u00adplate such themes as eth\u00adnic\u00adity, iden\u00adtity, diver\u00adsity, anx\u00adi\u00adety, fear, love, and accep\u00adtance, just to name a few. My art helps me real\u00adize these con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adtions and pro\u00advides oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity for them to be dis\u00adcussed with oth\u00aders in hopes of forg\u00ading a con\u00adnec\u00adtion and an under\u00adstand\u00ading between oth\u00aders and myself, and between emo\u00adtions and the phys\u00adi\u00adcal world.\u201d\r\n\r\nEndi Poskovic\r\nBorn and raised in Bosnia and Herze\u00adgov\u00adina, Endi Poskovic was edu\u00adcated in Yugoslavia, Nor\u00adway, and the United States.
