practice entail within the context of Japanese studies? What conceptual, political, and interpersonal tools might hinder or support such a project? And what pitfalls and possibilities should be avoided or embraced in pursuing better ways of learning and living? Given the racist origins and supremacist legacies of Japanese studies, approaching this field through an antiracist lens can seem fraught, if not doomed. Nevertheless, our Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy Project (JSAP) represents an experiment that attempted to do just this. As part of this project, we taught a mixed undergraduate\/graduate course in the Winter semester of 2021, \u201cAntiracism and Japanese Culture,\u201d which entailed teaching and learning a number of lessons about \u201cJapan,\u201d analytical tools, politics, and the various intellectual and institutional constraints that shape our understanding. This webinar features presentations and reflections on the JSAP enterprise by the project\u2019s co-organizers, Sophie Hasuo, Reginald Jackson, and Rachel Willis. In addition to explaining the course\u2019s specific pedagogical underpinnings, goals, and organization, we will also discuss various philosophical and pragmatic aspects of developing such a collaborative project. Influenced by Moten and Harney\u2019s notion of fugitive planning in The Undercommons, we outline lessons learned from working together to imagine how best to study and thrive within and beyond the ivory tower.\r\n \r\n Reginald Jackson is an Associate Professor of Pre-modern Japanese Literature at the University of Michigan. Catch her with her band at an Austin club, headlining a festival with her trio Nobody's Girl, or on her own, trying out new songs in a little gem of a listening room, somewhere in America.\r\n\r\nRachael Kilgour is a Minnesotan songwriter and performing artist whose sincere, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the esteemed international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest, Rachael has been featured at NYC\u2019s Lincoln Center, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. Married in her early twenties, Rachael chronicled her life as a young parent in a same-sex partnership and addressed sociopolitical issues from government corruption to income inequality and religious hypocrisy. In 2014, divorce brought an unwanted end to her role as a member of the family she had helped to grow. In the aftermath, Kilgour found solace in songwriting.
