This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.",

In this program, students build upon the knowledge gained in a first undergraduate research experience to further explore the connections between research, a liberal arts education, and communicating skills to advance their future professional goals. Students are expected to explore various written and oral possibilities for communicating their research process, identifying the limits set by the discipline and the opportunities that lie beyond.

Apply at: https://myumi.ch/uroprs
Sophie/Elsie is part of a series in which South African artist Mary Sibande (b. 1982) explores her family’s history. Three generations of Sibande women were employed as domestic workers in Apartheid South Africa, which Sibande references through Sophie’s blue and white uniform—a dress synonymous with the profession there. Though not quite part of the born-free generation (the name given to children born after the start of Nelson Mandela’s presidency in 1994), Sibande was able to dream of life choices that were inaccessible to her ancestors. These dreams are acted out by her alter-ego Sophie, a life-size fiberglass figure cast in the artist’s own likeness. Sibande created Sophie/Elsie in 2009 in honor of her great-grandmother, who was given the Western name Elsie because her masters couldn’t be bothered to learn her African name. While closing her eyes, Sophie imagines herself as an orchestra conductor, as a superhero, as a businesswoman. Here, her maid’s uniform transforms into the dress of a Victorian queen, complete with billowing cape and dramatic train.

At a time when indoor visits are limited, UMMA is proud to be able to share Sophie/Elsie with our community. Eventually, she will take center stage in a reinstallation of the permanent African galleries, opening in fall 2021. The reinstallation will feature UMMA’s historical collection of African art, as well as recent acquisitions of contemporary artworks from artists based in Africa and in the diaspora.

This museum purchase was made possible by Joseph and Annette Allen.

Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools, the potter’s wheel, press molds, coil building, slab construction, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational, to abstract, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature.
If you haven't seen Junior Brown yet, you need to "guit with it"! Junior Brown is a one-man musical hot fusion machine, and he's coming to town with his guit-steel, a unique hybrid contraption that's part electric guitar and part country steel guitar. People call him a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Ernest Tubb. But there's a lot more to say about Junior Brown. There's the fact that he's just about the best surf guitarist around, for example. Or that he's a wonderful composer of traditional country songs, the kind in which each outrageous pun leads you deeper into an emotional blind alley. Come check out the performer voted #1 House Rocker by the readers of Guitar Player! Come pick up a copy of Junior's recent album "Deep in the Heart of Me."",
