SUMMARY:Other:Become a UROP Research Mentor
DESCRIPTION:Submit a Research Project for the 2021-2022 Academic Year: https://lsa.umich.edu/urop/research-mentors.html\n\nUROP Research Mentors are faculty and post-doc researchers from across all U-M's 19 Schools and Colleges who provide undergraduate student researchers an opportunity to engage in research activities that help them learn about the pursuit of knowledge within an academic discipline. This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration\, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention\, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Introduction to Multilevel Models
DESCRIPTION:PDHP resumes our 2021 workshop series on Thursday\, August 19th\, with a workshop entitled Introduction to Multilevel Models\, presented by Dr. Kris Preacher of Vanderbilt University's Quantitative Methods program (within the Department of Psychology and Human Development). This half-day workshop is geared toward data analysts and researchers of all levels\, particularly those performing analysis on hierarchically clustered (nested) data using Mplus\, R\, or SPSS. Attendees will receive an introduction to the key concepts of multilevel models (appropriate settings for their use over standard statistical models\, equation conventions\, and interpretation)\, as well as hands-on practice implementing state-of-the-art features of MLM using popular statistical software packages.\n\nTopics include:\n\n• Key concepts and motivation for MLM vs. standard statistical models\n• Estimating and plotting interaction effects\n• Implications of nested vs. cross-classified mutlilevel data\n• Power analysis for MLM using a general Monte Carlo technique\n\nRegistration Required\n\nhttps://pdhp.isr.umich.edu/workshops/\n\nDr. Preacher is a Professor in the Quantitative Methods program and Department of Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. His research concerns the use (and combination) of structural equation modeling and multilevel modeling to model correlational and longitudinal data. Other interests include developing techniques to test mediation and moderation hypotheses\, bridging the gap between substantive theory and statistical practice\, and studying model evaluation and model selection in the application of multivariate methods to social science questions. He serves on the editorial boards of Multivariate Behavioral Research\, Behavior Research Methods\, Communication Methods and Measures\, and Journal of Educational & Behavioral Statistics\, and is an associate editor of Psychological Methods.\n\nThe Population Dynamics and Health Program (PDHP) provides resources and services that support innovative approaches to data collection and analysis and the development of early-career population scientists\, as well as research on significant and emergent issues in population dynamics and health.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Promoting Racial Equity in Student Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Mental health remains a significant concern for students of color in higher education. Students of color often report experiencing daily micro-aggressions\, harassment\, alongside racial discrimination\, as they navigate classroom and institutional contexts at their college or university. As such\, promoting and ensuring supportive and responsive learning environments can alleviate the stress experienced by students of color as well as strengthen and reframe how we define student success. As their campuses prepare to welcome them back for in-person instruction\, recognizing\, attending to\, and ameliorating the effects of the past year’s accumulated racial trauma will be critical to support and promote student thriving and healing. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the unique racial traumas that undergraduate and graduate students of color may face in and outside of their classrooms. In addition\, this session offers practical and culturally sensitive recommendations regarding how instructors can foster mental well-being for students of color in their courses.\n\nWelcome and framing remarks by Tabbye Chavous\, Director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity\; Professor of Education and Psychology\; and Associate Dean of Diversity\, Equity\, & Inclusion in the College of Literature\, Sciences\, & the Arts at the University of Michigan\n\nModerated by Carlota Ocampo\, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs\; Associate Professor of Psychology at the Trinity Washington University\; Steve Fund National Advisor\n\nPanelists\nStephen Quaye\, Associate Professor in Education Studies at Ohio State University\n\nCirleen DeBlaere\, Associate Professor in Counseling Psychology at Georgia State University & Steve Fund Mental Health Expert\n\nWilliam D.
