SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nAs a card-carrying member of the south Austin scene\, Grace Pettis has amassed bragging rights to spare. She is the winner of many of the nation’s most prestigious songwriting contests\, including NPR's Mountain Stage NewSong Contest\, and has received grants from the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation. Grace’s songs have been recorded by other esteemed artists\, including Sara Hickman and Ruthie Foster and she added to her songwriting accomplishments in 2019 by signing a publishing deal with BMG. Catch her with her band at an Austin club\, headlining a festival with her trio Nobody's Girl\, or on her own\, trying out new songs in a little gem of a listening room\, somewhere in America.\n\nRachael Kilgour is a Minnesotan songwriter and performing artist whose sincere\, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the esteemed international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest\, Rachael has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center\, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. Married in her early twenties\, Rachael chronicled her life as a young parent in a same-sex partnership and addressed sociopolitical issues from government corruption to income inequality and religious hypocrisy. In 2014\, divorce brought an unwanted end to her role as a member of the family she had helped to grow. In the aftermath\, Kilgour found solace in songwriting. Rachael was awarded a 2020 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant to focus on a songwriting project about the life and recent death of her father.
