SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Other:U-M Farm Stand
DESCRIPTION:The Farm Stand is a weekly pop-up market and education project that sells produce grown by students for students. It’s held from July through October on State St outside of the U-M Museum of Art. Powered by the U-M Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) and the Campus Farm at Matthaei Botanical Gardens (CF)\, this project seeks to increase access to local food for students and engage the wider U-M community in food systems learning and engagement opportunities. Students will receive a 30% discount and the proceeds from the Farm Stand go towards funding student-led sustainable food initiatives here at the U-M through UMSFP’s mini-grants for food justice program. Follow @umfarmstand on Instagram to up-to-date announcements and weekly product availability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME 500 Seminar: Sheng Zhong\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Sheng Zhong\, Ph.D.\nProfessor of Bioengineering\,\nUniversity of California\, San Diego\n\n“Revealing protein-protein interactions at the transcriptome scale by sequencing”\n\nAbstract: \n\nWe describe PROPER-seq (protein-protein interaction sequencing) to map protein-protein interactions (PPIs) en masse. PROPER-seq first converts transcriptomes of input cells into RNA-barcoded protein libraries\, in which all interacting protein pairs are captured through nucleotide barcode ligation\, recorded as chimeric DNA sequences\, and decoded at once by sequencing and mapping. We applied PROPER-seq to human embryonic kidney cells\, T lymphocytes\, and endothelial cells and identified 210\,518 human PPIs (collected in the PROPER v.1.0 database). Among these\, 1\,365 and 2\,480 PPIs are supported by published co-immunoprecipitation (coIP) and affinity purification-mass spectrometry (AP-MS) data\, 17\,638 PPIs are predicted by the prePPI algorithm without previous experimental validation\, and 100 PPIs overlap human synthetic lethal gene pairs. In addition\, four previously uncharacterized interaction partners with poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) (a critical protein in DNA repair) known as XPO1\, MATR3\, IPO5\, and LEO1 are validated in vivo. PROPER-seq presents a time-effective technology to map PPIs at the transcriptome scale\, and PROPER v.1.0 provides a rich resource for studying PPIs.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Single Molecule Junctions: A Green's Function Perspective\n
DESCRIPTION:Nonlinear optical spectroscopy has been developed and widely utilized as control and characterization tool in studies of optical response of molecules. Similarly\, nonadiabatic molecular dynamics is a fundamental problem related to breakdown of timescale separation between electron and nuclear dynamics. It plays an important role in many processes from chemistry and photochemistry to spectroscopy and non-radiative electronic relaxation and from electron and proton transfer to coherent control and photo induced energy transfer. Theoretical studies of energy storage and conversion usually rely on macroscopic thermodynamic formulation.\n\nThe progress of experimental techniques at the nanoscale made measurements of responses of single molecule junctions a reality. Proper description of such open nonequilibrium systems is a challenging theoretical problem. For example\, optical spectroscopy of open nonequilibrium systems is a natural meeting point for at least two research areas: nonlinear optical spectroscopy and quantum transport\; while proper description of performance of nanoscale devices for energy conversion requires development of nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics. I’ll review our attempts in theoretical formulation of optical spectroscopy\, non adiabatic molecular dynamics and quantum thermodynamics using nonequilibrium Green’s function techniques.\n\nReferences\n[1] N.
