SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LAGS Seminar | Never a Dull Moment With a Career in Physics
DESCRIPTION:When I graduated in 1988 from the University of Michigan with a bachelor in physics\, I would never have imagined where this degree would take me. I went to Harvard for a PhD in physics and then moved to Europe. I lived in both Austria and Germany\, learned German\, and did basic research at two universities up to the assistant professor level. Then I transitioned to industry where I gained extensive experience in technical product development\, in management as the Managing Director (Geschäftsführerin) of two high tech companies as well as in sales as a Key Account Manager. Today\, I design surgical microscopes for ophthalmology. My career is also strongly influenced by the work I do as the president of a non-profit association dedicated to founding an Albert Einstein museum in Ulm\, Germany – his birthplace (see https://einstein.center).\n\nThroughout my career\, my motto has been: LEARNING BY DOING and it has served me well since I left Ann Arbor. In this seminar\, I will share some insights for transitioning from academia to industry and why I found a career in industry and in a non-profit so multifaceted. I will also share my passion for the Einstein museum with anyone attending the seminar.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Prosody Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:The Prosody Group consists of researchers interested in any aspect of prosody. The group meets biweekly throughout the year to present work in progress\, read papers\, and practice for upcoming presentations. Please join us if this sounds interesting to you!\n\nMeetings this semester will be virtual. For Zoom access information\, or to be added to the Prosody discussion group list\, please email:\nprosody-contact@umich.edu\n\nOn Friday\, October 29\, Mairym Lloréns Monteserín of the University of Southern California will present \"Co-speech vocal tics produced by adults with Tourette syndrome are sensitive to prosodic structure.\" \n\nABSTRACT\nSpeech planning and production takes place in a body beset by urges. An urge to x is a sensation of discomfort that worsens until x is performed. It is common for talkers to experience urges to cough/yawn/etc. while they are speaking but very little is known about how these two fundamentally different modes of control over vocal behavior interact. My research is currently focused on understanding if and how urge-based systems that have the potential to wrest control over vocal-respiratory articulators are coordinated with co-occurring speech at different time-scales/levels of prosodic hierarchy. The vocal tics produced by adults living with the neurological condition Tourette syndrome provide a unique opportunity to investigate this topic because they occur frequently. Vocal tic noises\, words and phrases are produced in order to satisfy an urge and they are completely unrelated to a ticcer-talker's linguistic and communicative goals. For my dissertation\, I collected a corpus of acoustic recordings of adults performing a battery of speech tasks while ticcing freely\, that is\, while refraining from suppressing their own tics. By removing the need for active suppression\, tic and speech motor systems are free to coordinate or compete in a naturalistic fashion. In this talk I will present an analysis of the relationship between prosodic structure and the timing of co-speech tic events. The distribution of tic events shows that tics are sensitive to prosodic structure at the level of intonational phrases (at least). I interpret these results to suggest that a higher-level task coordinates tic utterances with phrase boundaries. Implications for our understanding of speech planning in light of such “meta-prosody” are discussed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Minimum Distance Belief Updating with General Information
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We study belief revision when information is given as a set of relevant probability distributions. This flexible setting encompasses (i) the standard notion of information as an event (a subset of the state space)\, (ii) qualitative information (``A is more likely than B\")\, (iii) interval information (``chance of A is between ten and twenty percent\")\, and more. In this setting\, we behaviorally characterize a decision maker (DM) who selects a posterior belief from the provided information set that minimizes the subjective distance between her prior and the information. We call such a DM a Minimum Distance Subjective Expected Utility (MDSEU) maximizer. Next\, we characterize the collection of MDSEU distance notions that coincide with Bayesian updating on standard events. We call this class of distances Generalized Bayesian Divergence\, as they nest Kullback-Leibler Divergence. MDSEU provides a systematic way to extend Bayesian updating to general information and zero-probability events. Importantly\, Bayesian updating is not unique. Thus\, two Bayesian DM's with a common prior may disagree after common information\, resulting in polarization and speculative trade. We discuss related models of non-Bayesian updating.\n\nTo join the seminar\, please contact at econ.theory-requests@umich.edu

DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information and policies before purchasing a ticket and again before attending a show. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. He started out in the folk clubs of New York and Boston before going on to a long career that's encompassed both music and acting. He has given birth to over 20 albums (as well as fathering some very successful musical offspring)\, written folk classics including \"Dead Skunk\" and \"The Man Who Couldn't Cry\,\" and created music for film and theater. Loudon comes to Michigan with a recent compilation\, \"Years in the Making\,\" which includes songs for a film produced by Judd Apatow\, \"Surviving Twin.\"
