DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 12-18 months\, the world has witnessed the brutal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded by systemic racism as it proliferated across the US\, threatening to stifle its vibrant and diverse society. Students and youth in the US and globally have been at the forefront of social change devising models of inclusion and care for those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial and environmental inequities. \n Stamps Gallery invited students at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to design posters and make videos that respond to the prompt: what change would you like to see in your community? Stamps students created meaningful posters and video work that will be featured in Respond/Resist/Rethink 2021: A Student Poster &amp\; Video Exhibition. \n Why posters &amp\; video?\nFor generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. \n Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nRespond / Resist / Rethink asks the UM community to come together to envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging\, and empathy. The work featured in the exhibition were selected through an open call by a committee comprising Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Julianna Lew\, David Chung\, Najwat Rehman\, Albert Che\, and Stamps Gallery staff.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Megaconstellations of Satellites Are About to Ruin the Night Sky for Everyone
DESCRIPTION:Department Colloquium Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\n\nSeveral companies are planning to launch megaconstellations of thousands of communication satellites (satcons)\, which would increase the number of active satellites in Low Earth Orbit at least twenty-fold in the next few years. SpaceX's Starlink satcon is currently largest (almost 2\,000 satellites) and is adding 60 new satellites every couple of weeks. While these satcons do allow internet access in many underserved rural and remote locations\, the costs are prohibitively high for all but the most well-off customers. These thousands of satellites each reflect sunlight\, causing serious problems for research astronomy\, and making anthropogenic light pollution a fully global phenomenon that cannot be escaped anywhere on Earth. Because of geometry and the chosen satellite orbits\, latitudes near 50 degrees N and S will see the worst light pollution from these satcons. These satellites also contribute to atmospheric pollution\, both on launch and re-entry\, contribute to diffuse sky emission\, and drastically increase the very real threat of Kessler Syndrome. I will talk about how these satellites will affect stargazers and astronomers worldwide\, and what you can do to help mitigation efforts. \n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics  ||  Weekly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nStructural variants (SVs) are a source of pathogenic variants in a clinical referral population\, however\, they are often under-reported due to technical limitations of detection and difficulty with clinical interpretation. For example\, mobile element insertions (MEIs) are estimated to lead to a positive finding in 1 out of 1000 rare genetic disease cases\, yet the numbers are far lower in clinical diagnostic laboratories. Targeted NGS with short insert size libraries\, unlike genome sequencing\, will have very few discordant read pairs to indicate the presence of an SV. We\, therefore\, developed an SV detection tool called SCRAMble (Soft Clipped Read Alignment Mapper) to identify SV breakpoints in targeted NGS.\n \nWe applied SCRAMble to a prospective clinical referral cohort for exome sequencing to identify deletions and MEIs. We also applied SCRAMble to a hereditary cancer panel assay for the identification of a large inversion involving the MSH2 gene that causes Lynch syndrome. Adding breakpoint detection to clinical targeted sequencing identifies positive findings which were missed by prior testing and by other variant callers. Detecting breakpoints allows for more precise interpretation and for more targeted confirmation assays. By applying SV breakpoint detection\, we are able to diagnose ~0.3% more cases. While this is a modest gain in diagnostic yield\, for the patients and families involved\, a positive diagnosis\, even after prior testing\, can have a meaningful impact on their lives.\n\nZoom link: https://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Lecture | “Let Them Taste Hunger”: Famine\, Inequality\, and Communal Belonging in the Late Ottoman Empire
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid event: Room 555\, Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109\n \nOr participate virtually by registering in advance for the webinar here:\n https://myumi.ch/erDVR\n \n After registration\, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the webinar.\n \n After the 1877-78 Russo-Ottoman War\, the Ottoman Empire saw the growth of ethnic and sectarian solidarity movements in regions like Anatolia and the Balkans. Much work has examined the intellectual and discursive formations of these solidarities after 1878\, but the availability of new ideas cannot alone account for their widespread uptake. Why did ethnic and sectarian solidarity seem so plausible to so many people across Ottoman domains and elsewhere? This talk argues that pan-ethnic and pan-sectarianism spread so successfully because of the inequalities in agrarian areas arising from ecological and economic hardships. To capture the effects of these hardships\, it focuses on the 1879-81 famine that struck the Ottoman East.\n \n Matthew Ghazarian received his PhD from Columbia University's Department of Middle Eastern\, South Asian\, and African Studies in 2021. His research focuses on the late Ottoman Empire and modern Middle East\, exploring the intersections of environmental history\, political economy\, and communal conflict. His dissertation\, \"Ghost Rations\,\" examines the development of the conflicts that tore apart the multi-ethnic\, multi-confessional Ottoman Empire. It focuses on the period 1839-94\, which began with a Sultanic declaration of religious equality and ended with a dramatic wave of communal violence\, the Hamidian Massacres (1894-97). \"Ghost Rations\" foregrounds the role of material conditions – debt\, drought\, hunger\, and inequality - in bringing about communal divides. To accomplish this\, it examines bouts of famine in the decades leading up to the Hamidian Massacres. Suffering\, unequally borne\, radicalized notions of belonging and exacerbated communal tensions\, sowing the seeds for violence to come. Dr. Ghazarian also contributes to an Ottoman History Podcast and has taught in the Armenian Studies Program and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California\, Berkeley.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at caswebinars@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
