SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 12-18 months\, the world has witnessed the brutal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded by systemic racism as it proliferated across the US\, threatening to stifle its vibrant and diverse society. Students and youth in the US and globally have been at the forefront of social change devising models of inclusion and care for those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial and environmental inequities. \n Stamps Gallery invited students at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to design posters and make videos that respond to the prompt: what change would you like to see in your community? Stamps students created meaningful posters and video work that will be featured in Respond/Resist/Rethink 2021: A Student Poster &amp\; Video Exhibition. \n Why posters &amp\; video?\nFor generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. \n Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nRespond / Resist / Rethink asks the UM community to come together to envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging\, and empathy. The work featured in the exhibition were selected through an open call by a committee comprising Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Julianna Lew\, David Chung\, Najwat Rehman\, Albert Che\, and Stamps Gallery staff.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Lecture Series | The Link Between Marriage and Fertility and Changing Pathways to First Marriage in Japan
DESCRIPTION:The low prevalence of cohabiting unions and non-marital childbearing in Japan is inconsistent with the expectations of prominent theories of family change in low fertility societies. In this study\, we use data from large national surveys to describe growing heterogeneity in pathways to first marriage in Japan\, focusing on the temporal ordering of cohabitation\, pregnancy\, marriage\, and first childbirth.\n \nJim Raymo is Professor of Sociology and the Henry Wendt III ’55 Professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University. Raymo’s research focuses primarily on evaluating patterns and potential consequences of major demographic changes in Japan. He has published widely on key features of recent family change\, including delayed marriage\, extended coresidence with parents\, and increases in premarital cohabitation\, shotgun marriages\, and divorce. In other lines of research\, he has examined health outcomes at older ages in Japan and their relationship with family\, work\, and local area characteristics and has examined multiple dimensions of well-being among the growing population of single mothers and their children in Japan.\n\nPlease register for the Zoom event here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_U7wQQcTbTBKy12KSWtHSEA\n\nThis colloquium series is made possible by the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Please join us!\n\nProf. Karnauskas's presentation is titled \"The equatorial current system from underwater gliders off the Galápagos Islands\" and will take place on Thursday\, September 9 at 3:30 p.m. EDT.\n\nThis seminar will be in person at the Climate and Space Research Building Auditorium\, Room 2246. \n\nThe seminar may also be viewed via Zoom. \nPlease contact lhopkins@umich to request zoom access.\n\nABSTRACT:\nRelatively small (order 1 K) variations in the surface temperature of the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean can cause far-reaching effects throughout the global atmosphere. For this reason\, the tropical Pacific is not exactly an understudied region in the global climate dynamics community. However\, knowledge of the detailed structure of the equatorial current system in the eastern Pacific has remained elusive until recently\, largely due to the paucity of direct measurements—and models that suffer from insufficient resolution and severe biases in oceanographic and coupled phenomena. In particular\, the termination of the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) as it meets the Galápagos Islands at ~92°W\, which idealized experiments with numerical models suggest has profound impacts on regional circulation and climate\, occurs entirely east of the array of moorings that were installed in the tropical Pacific beginning in the late 1980s. Ironically\, much depends on what happens where we have managed to collect the fewest observations. To address this critical knowledge gap\, we deployed and maintained a fleet of autonomous underwater gliders west of the Galápagos Islands (but east of the TAO Array) from 2013–2016. In this talk\, I will share insights from the Repeat Observations by Gliders in the Equatorial Region (ROGER) campaign\, including what we now know about the termination of the EUC\, revised estimates of upwelling rates\, characterization of instabilities\, and how Kelvin waves associated with El Niño affect this circulation. In addition\, I will offer a quantitative comparison between these new observations in the eastern equatorial Pacific and global climate models to characterize the evolution of mean state biases from CMIP3 to CMIP6.\n\nPlease join us!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME 500 Seminar: A machine learning-based predictive model of genome-wide binding of the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \n\nThe Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) is an inducible transcription factor (TF) whose ligands include the potent environmental contaminant 2\,3\,7\,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). TCDD-mediated toxicity is believed to occur through activation of AhR and its binding to the 5'-GCGTG-3' DNA motif\, referred to as the Dioxin Response Element (DRE). However\, AhR binding in intact human cells is highly dynamic and tissue-specific. Approximately 50% of all experimentally verified AhR binding sites do not contain a DRE\, and a great number of otherwise accessible DREs are not bound by AhR. Identification of the determinants of tissue-specific AhR binding is crucial for understanding downstream gene regulatory effects and potential adverse health outcomes of TCDD exposure\, such as liver toxicity and immune suppression. We applied XGBoost\, a supervised machine learning architecture\, to predict genome-wide AhR binding as a function of DNA sequences immediately flanking the DRE\, and local chromatin context features such as DNase-seq\, histone modifications\, and TF ChIP-Seq signals\, as well as DRE proximity to gene promoters. We predicted binding of induced AhR in MCF-7 breast cancer cells\, human hepatocytes\, and the human lymphoblastoid cell line GM17212\, as well as constitutive AhR binding in HepG2 cells. Our results demonstrate highly accurate and robust models of within-tissue binding\, with several specific TFs and HMs identified as predictive of AhR binding within and across tissues. Additionally\, we show that tissue-specific AhR binding is driven by a complex interplay of DNA flanking sequence and local chromatin context.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Incipient Intertwined Order in the Hubbard Model
DESCRIPTION:The Hubbard model is the paradigmatic model of strongly correlated electron systems. Over the past several years\, advanced numerical techniques have led to considerable progress in determining the ground state phases of the model\, revealing spin stripe order\, charge stripe order\, and d-wave superconductivity as the dominant players at low energies. In this talk\, I will discuss numerically exact determinantal quantum Monte Carlo calculations demonstrating how the interplay of these orders persists well above the onset of the pseudogap [1]. In particular\, I will focus on the nature of fluctuating spin [2\,3] and charge [4\,5] stripes in the model\, and show that they remain mutually commensurate at temperatures where the model exhibits bad metallic transport [6]. I will also discuss connections between these results to recent X-ray scattering experiments on cuprates [7] and possible avenues to explore intertwined orders in cold atom simulations of the Hubbard model.\n\nReferences:\n[1] EWH et al\, arXiv:2106.09704.\n[2] EWH et al\, Science 358\, 1161 (2017).\n[3] EWH et al\, npj Quantum Materials 3\, 22 (2018).\n[4] P. SUMMARY:Other:Label-free electrical detection of nucleic acids following electrokinetic enrichment for point-of-care testing
DESCRIPTION: Sensors that leverage the influence of a biorecognition event on charge transport\, such as field-effect transistors and nanoporous membranes\, are among the most sensitive because they translate localized binding into a change in a system-scale property. However\, fabrication and custom functionalization of these sensors is not trivial\, and their integration with protocols that pre-enrich target species and facilitate their transport to the biorecognition site is an active area of research. In this presentation\, we demonstrate that ion concentration polarization (ICP) in the presence of fluid flow drives focusing and efficient capture of target nucleic acids within a packed bed of oligoprobe-conjugated beads. A key finding is that ion conduction along the surface of the bioconjugated beads is the dominant contributor to current to the electrode that drives ICP. Therefore\, hybridization of a target nucleic acid (a polyanion) to the bead surface leads to a shift in the slope of the current-voltage curve. This approach is versatile in that a target nucleic acid can be detected electrically\, in the absence of a label. The resulting approach allows for a plug-and-play nucleic acid sensor using off-the-shelf bioconjugated beads and simple electronics\, making it advantageous for point-of-care testing. \n \n \n \nRobbyn Anand (Iowa State University)

SUMMARY:Performance:CANCELLED - The Ark's Student Welcome Show with Elliott BROOD
DESCRIPTION:*By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nStudents: Welcome to Ann Arbor and to The Ark\, a world-class club with music for all ages and tastes! \n\nTickets on sale 6/25\, and show is free at the door with any student ID.\n\nFrom the mountains of Utah to the trenches of Vimy Ridge\, Elliott BROOD’s songs have travelled the gore and glory of history in equal measure for nearly a decade. With the stomp and thrash of their early albums\, Elliott BROOD carved their niche drawing from the darker corners of history and memory. As heavy and harrowing the past can be\, for Elliott BROOD\, it is also a generous companion\, giving the gift of appreciation for times of peace and grace. With Keeper\, Elliott BROOD’s seventh album\, the trio deals with the past in more personal terms. The title\, which speaks to loyalty and longevity\, sets the tone for an album that explores the strength of conviction\, and how that strength is tested\, again and again\, over time. Thoughts of worthiness and dedication\, and their emotional flip sides\, inform a collection that sees the band exploring those battlefields much closer to home. For the first taste of Keeper\, a bright acoustic intro bursts into the buoyant\, carefree chorus of “Stay Out\,” a song about when and why we find our ways home. Mixed by Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers)\, “Stay Out” is all blue sky and sunshine even while it revels in the night. The song weighs the fleeting elation of recklessness against the deeper ties that bind. The subject of family relationships\, the push and pull of gratitude and conflict\, reappears in more complicated forms with “Full of Wires\,” a song about not leaving things unsaid\, and “A Month of Sundays\,” the fallout after too much is said. Keeper is especially focused on enduring\, complex\, long-term relationships\, those into which we are born\, those in which we grow older. With dips into 50s slapback throwback in “No Way Out\,” the metallic edges of “Bird Dog\,” one of two songs mixed by Tool/ Johnny Cash producer Sylvia Massy\, and the splashes of synth on “The Coast\,” Elliott BROOD continue to expand their sound beyond their acoustic origins. Keeper\, created during mini writing and recording retreats while hopping across the summer festival circuit\, marks another satisfying chapter in the ongoing evolution of Elliott BROOD. From the Polaris Music Prize short listed breakout album Mountain Meadows to the JUNO Award winning Days Into Years\, the well-traveled trio of Mark Sasso\, Casey Laforet and Stephen Pitkin have created a body of work that is at once meticulous and boisterous\, substantial and entertaining.
