SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Panics and Prices
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Rumors of a shortage may create higher-order uncertainty and cause panic buying even when there is no real shortage and most consumers are aware of this fact. We study the role of prices in alleviating\, or even preventing\, panic buying caused by such rumors. Under some circumstances\, flexible prices fail to do so and panic buying is the unique equilibrium outcome. In these circumstances\, fixed prices prevent panic buying and lead to higher consumer surplus despite the possibility of rationing. Producer surplus may be higher as well.\n\nTo join the seminar\, please contact at econ.theory-requests@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Johann Gagnon-Bartsch\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are increasingly prevalent in education research\, and are often regarded as a gold standard of causal inference. Two main virtues of randomized experiments are that they (1) do not suffer from confounding\, thereby allowing for an unbiased estimate of an intervention's causal impact\, and (2) allow for design-based inference\, meaning that the physical act of randomization largely justifies the statistical assumptions made. However\, RCT sample sizes are often small\, leading to low precision\; in many cases RCT estimates may be too imprecise to guide policy or inform science. Observational studies\, by contrast\, have strengths and weaknesses complementary to those of RCTs. Observational studies typically offer much larger sample sizes\, but may suffer confounding. In many contexts\, experimental and observational data exist side by side\, and recent work has sought to integrate \"big observational data\" with \"small but high-quality experimental data\" to get the best of both worlds. Such approaches hold particular promise in the field of education\, where RCT sample sizes are often small due to cost constraints\, but automatic collection of observational data\, such as in computerized educational technology applications\, or in state longitudinal data systems (SLDS) with administrative data on hundreds of thousand of students\, has made rich\, high-dimensional observational data widely available. In this talk I will discuss an approach that allows researchers to employ machine learning algorithms to learn from the observational data\, and use the resulting models to improve precision in randomized experiments. Importantly\, there is no requirement that the machine learning models are \"correct\" in any sense\, and the final experimental results are guaranteed to be exactly unbiased. Thus\, there is no danger of confounding biases in the observational data \"leaking\" into the experiment. \n\n\nJohann Gagnon-Bartsch is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and is affiliated with the Michigan Institute for Data Science\, the Child and Adolescent Data Lab\, the Michigan Center for Single-Cell Genomic Data Analytics\, and the U-M/Toyota Research Institute Partnership. His research focuses on causal inference\, machine learning\, and nonparametric methods with applications in the biological and social sciences.\nhttp://dept.stat.lsa.umich.edu/~johanngb/#Home

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 12-18 months\, the world has witnessed the brutal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded by systemic racism as it proliferated across the US\, threatening to stifle its vibrant and diverse society. Students and youth in the US and globally have been at the forefront of social change devising models of inclusion and care for those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial and environmental inequities. \n Stamps Gallery invited students at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to design posters and make videos that respond to the prompt: what change would you like to see in your community? Stamps students created meaningful posters and video work that will be featured in Respond/Resist/Rethink 2021: A Student Poster &amp\; Video Exhibition. \n Why posters &amp\; video?\nFor generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. \n Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nRespond / Resist / Rethink asks the UM community to come together to envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging\, and empathy. The work featured in the exhibition were selected through an open call by a committee comprising Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Julianna Lew\, David Chung\, Najwat Rehman\, Albert Che\, and Stamps Gallery staff.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | The Bouleuterion at Notion
DESCRIPTION:This recorded lecture is available to view on YouTube: https://youtu.be/jVraZNW1edQ\n\nThe Bouleuterion (Council House) at Notion is one of a number of similar structures in western Asia Minor (modern Turkey) of comparable plan\, size\, and location. Their identification as Bouleuteria is based largely on the latter two characteristics\; they enclose large auditoria\, capable of holding significant numbers of people\, and they are situated on or near public squares. The history of this building type is conventionally traced back to the Old and New Bouleuteria of Athens\, dated to the late 6th and late 5th centuries respectively\, but all the comparable buildings in Asia Minor are considerably later\; the earliest securely dated example is the Bouleuterion at Miletus\, constructed according to the dedicatory inscription to Antiochus IV between 175 and 164 BC. Thus while the Athenian Bouleuteria may indeed have served as precedents\, and the New Bouleuterion at Athens was in fact also renovated in the 2nd c. BC\, the building type exemplified by the Bouleuterion at Notion was essentially a Hellenistic creation.\n\nThe Bouleuterion at Notion was partially excavated by Mustafa Büyükkolancı in 1994\, and has recently been cleaned and documented by a U-M archaeological team. Rectangular both in external outline and in its internal seating arrangement\, it is larger in plan (24.2 x 30.5 m) than any other comparable building—considerably larger than the Bouleuteria of Priene and Heracleia\, for example\, and larger also than both the Old and the New Bouleuteria at Athens. It can be reconstructed in detail both in plan and in section\, thanks to its remarkably transparent design\; the whole building is based on a unit of 16 Attic/Ionic feet. In its design\, construction\, and urban setting\, the Bouleuterion at Notion adds new detail not only to the history of the local community\, but also to the development of the preeminent civic building type of Hellenistic architecture. \n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin us via Zoom at:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96551052011\nMeeting ID: 965 5105 2011\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Functional roles of phase separation at the plasma membrane
DESCRIPTION:Research in the Veatch lab over the last decade has used conventional and super-resolution fluorescence localization microscopy to interrogate the structure and function of phase-related heterogeneity in plasma membranes. This presentation will highlight recent advances from the lab\, including our work to demonstrate that membrane phase separation contributes to the organization\, dynamics\, and signaling activity of proteins at B cell receptor clusters. I will also discuss our recent theoretical work examining emergent properties of polymer rich droplets at heterogeneous membranes\, making predictions for how liquid-liquid phase separation in the cytoplasm couples to the distinct phase transition at the plasma membrane.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | A paradigm for open quantum systems with memory from holography
DESCRIPTION:The late-time\, long-distance behaviour of gravitational perturbations of planar AdS black holes is controlled by hydrodynamic quasinormal modes. In the dual CFT these are modes of the conserved currents which control the infra-red dynamics. While the on-shell structure of these modes has been understood for a long-time\, we have recently begun to understand how to construct an off-shell low energy effective action\, an effective hydrodynamic field theory\, from holography. I will describe the general lessons learnt from the gravitational analysis\, sketching out a paradigm that provides a template for the analysis of general quantum systems with dissipation and long-time memory.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Professor Myles Durkee UM. Department of Psychology
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines how cultural invalidations and racial code-switching are associated with ethnic-racial identity development\, mental health\, and occupational outcomes among people of color. Cultural invalidations are identity threats that challenge the authenticity of a person’s membership within their racial group\, and racial code-switching is the process of modifying one's behavior to adhere to the norms of specific racial groups in different contexts. Implications regarding the psychological costs and benefits of cultural invalidations and racial code-switching will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Reading Molecular Messages: Structural Elucidation of the Marine Environmental Metabolome
DESCRIPTION:The exchange of metabolites between algae and bacteria is essential for maintaining ecosystem structure and function.Numerous organic molecules have been shown to facilitate ecologically important partnerships\, including signaling molecules used for cell-cell communication and the exchange of organic nutrients as sources of energy\, carbon and essential metabolites. In addition\, the 600 Gt C marine dissolved organic matter reservoir harbors slow degrading molecules whose sources are poorly known\, in part because the composition of this reservoir remains enigmatic. In this talk I will describe some of the different analytical approaches we are taking to elucidate the organic currencies involved in maintaining ecosystem interactions and modulating global carbon cycling.\n\nThose wishing to attend remotely should log in to Zoom ID#989 8458 7392\n\nPlease note:\nBefore entering any U-M building\, all visitors\, contractors and vendors are required to complete a preliminary health screening via the guest version of ResponsiBLUE. The questionnaire includes information about U-M's face covering policy and expectations for unvaccinated individuals to continue to mask and distance while indoors on any of U-M's campuses.\n\nGo to: https://campusblueprint.umich.edu/prevention-testing-care/prevention/responsiblue/

DESCRIPTION:The University Center for Language and Literacy is offering a Speaking American English workshop for Fall 2021. The Speaking American English workshop is designed to help you reach personal communication goals and offers a supportive environment to practice the language skills that are important to you. \n\nThe session will run for 10 weeks from September 10 to November 19\, 2021. Participants will meet weekly on Fridays from 4-5 p.m.\n\nOur certified Speech-Language Pathologists use techniques to help non-native English speakers feel more confident in their communications – whether that’s giving a presentation\, or taking notes in a class with a native speaker who speaks fast. The goal of the program is not to eliminate a client’s accent\, but to enhance communication skills for greater self-assurance in any setting.\n\nParticipants set their own individual goals at the start of the workshop and will work to achieve those goals using a combination of small group activities and one-on-one interaction. If the group workshop does not work with your schedule\, please contact us\; individual consultations are available.\n\nWhat to Expect\n* An initial meeting focusing on setting your personal goals and objectives.\n* Both group and individual activities.\n* Exercises for improving articulation\, rate control\, and projection.\n* Increased confidence in social and professional interactions.\n* Guidance from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.\n\nRegister by filling out the form here: https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bg6tZhShXwx5IfH\n\nIf you have questions or need assistance\, please call (734) 764-8440.\n\nDetails\nWhen: 4-5 p.m. Fridays\, September 10-November 19\, 2021 (no session on October 1)\nWhere: Virtually through Zoom\, with a potential for in-person meetings as needed or available.\nCost: $275.00\, plus purchase of Mastering the American Accent by Lisa Mojsin.
