SUMMARY:Exhibition:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966
DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Brown Bag: Clinical Supervision: best practices in a clinical science program
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nClinical supervision provides a vital foundation for effective clinical training during graduate school. In fact\, all trainees will undergo thousands of supervised hours during years of training before being license eligible. Supervision is recognized as a core competency domain for psychologists and a distinct activity in the literature. However\, little empirical attention has been given to the process\, content and outcomes of clinical supervision. This talk will discuss current guidelines for clinical supervision\, highlight some key points of high-quality supervision\, and discuss opportunities for UM students to learn more about supervision during graduate school.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral and Experimental Economics (SBEE) Seminar: Your Place in the World: Relative Income and Global Inequality
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThere is abundant evidence on individual preferences for policies that reduce national inequality\, but only little evidence on preferences for policies addressing global inequality. To investigate the latter\, we conduct a two-year\, face-to-face survey experiment on a representative sample of Germans. We measure how individuals form perceptions of their ranks in the national and global income distributions\, and how those perceptions relate to their national and global policy preferences. We find that Germans systematically underestimate their true place in the world’s income distribution\, but that correcting those misperceptions does not affect their support for policies related to global inequality.\n\n(To attend this online event\, please complete the form to receive email instructions and announcements for this and future SBEE Seminars.)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture. How Governments Declare Disasters: Thoughts from Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public. Register at https://myumi.ch/DEAXr\n\nThis event is followed by:\n1:30-2:30 PM EST: Career Talk: A Discussion with Dr. A. Michael Stern on career building in Asian Studies\" \nIn Person at Weiser Hall 1010- see listing on our events page. \n\nGovernments most often declare disasters in response to natural events (storms\, flooding\, earthquakes\, etc.) and to a lesser degree other human-generated crises (e.g.\, internal violent conflicts that cause people to be displaced from their villages). International guidance and the literature on the decision to declare a disaster and appeal for international assistance are mainly technically oriented. However\, the political dimensions of these decisions are crucial to understanding what motivates a disaster declaration and when governments are willing to take the sometimes sensitive step of accepting outside help to address the disaster. This talk will draw on the presenter's practical experience with disaster responses internationally\, offering thoughts on this question\, using examples from Southeast Asia\, and addressing the significant intersections between governance and disaster management.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nAaron \"Michael\" Stern (PhD\, University of Michigan) is currently a foreign service officer with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He joined USAID in 2007 and has served in Washington\, the Philippines\, Pakistan\, India\, Afghanistan\, Frankfurt (supporting Iraq)\, and Madagascar. He is currently the deputy country representative for USAID in Laos. He received his BA from Columbia University (Economics)\, his masters from the University of Washington in Seattle (public administration and international relations)\, and his doctorate from the University of Michigan (political science\, comparative politics). He is a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship alumnus and also received a fellowship from the Ford Foundation for area studies work while at the University of Michigan. Before joining USAID\, he worked at the US Department of Energy\, the University of Michigan\, and the US Government Accountability Office (GAO). He also worked as a Researcher at Chulalongkorn University’s Institute of Asian Studies in Bangkok\, Thailand.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Innovation Seminar
DESCRIPTION:\"Recent improvements in modeling and design of RNA-only structures\"\n\nABSTRACT: The discovery and design of biologically important RNA molecules is outpacing three-structural characterization. I'll describe results from my and Wah Chiu's groups that demonstrate that cryo-electron microscopy can resolve maps of several kinds of RNA-only systems. These maps enable subnanometer-resolution 3D coordinate estimation when complemented with multidimensional chemical mapping and Rosetta DRRAFTER computational modeling. If time allows\, I'll describe work from the Eterna project to stabilize mRNA molecules to help accelerate worldwide COVID immunization.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Safe Is Safe Enough: Analyzing Hazards and Risks in the Real World to Inform Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:No endeavor/decision is without risk. Despite the best of intentions decisions that lead to undesired outcomes (financial\, human\, political\, reputation)\, many times catastrophic\, occur during the operation of complex systems. Unfortunately (tragically)\, it is also common that the parties that made these decisions or were impacted by these undesired outcomes viewed them as unexpected when they occurred. Even worse\, because the outcomes were unexpected there was generally little or no preparation for their occurrence further magnifying the extent and the impact to the individuals\, organizations\, and society as a whole. Since no system can be reasonably expected to perform flawlessly and with perfection all of the time\, the hazards that can cause undesired outcomes should be proactively identified and their associated risks should be either mitigated or the residual risk after mitigation should be accepted by those entities responsible for the system in question. Unfortunately\, history shows us that this is often not the case and arises from myriad reasons. Engineering risk analysis provides a systematic\, holistic approach for addressing risks associated with complex technical systems. The irony is that few engineers are ever introduced to or learn how to apply this knowledge in their professional activities. A discussion of approaches\, including real world examples\, to proactively identify hazards\, their associated risks\, and potential mitigation approaches that can mitigate the likelihood that an unacceptable outcome will occur.\n\nDr. James P. Bagian is a co-founder and the Executive Director of the Center for Risk Analysis Informed Decision Engineering (RAIDE) and is a Professor in the Departments of Industrial and Operations Engineering\, Aerospace Engineering\, and the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan. He has extensive experience in the fields of human factors\, aviation\, patient and transportation safety\, and risk assessment and management. Dr. Bagian was also the founding Director of the Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety at the University of Michigan. Previously he served as the first and founding director of the Department of Veterans Affairs National (VA) Center for Patient Safety and was the VA’s first Chief Patient Safety Officer where he developed numerous systems and risk based tools and programs that have been adopted nationally and internationally. A NASA astronaut\, he is a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and has also served as the Chief Flight Surgeon and Medical Consultant for the Space Shuttle Columbia Accident Investigation Board as well as being an investigator for the Space Shuttle Challenger mishap investigation. He was elected to two terms as the Chair of the Joint Commission’s Patient Safety Advisory Group and was a member of NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel from 2006-2018. Bagian holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University and a doctorate in medicine from Thomas Jefferson University. He is a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association and is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine.\n\nThis seminar series is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach. For the Zoom link and password and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\, please RSVP. For additional questions\, contact CHEPSseminar@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Documenting the Prague Spring: A Film Screening & Discussion of Oratorio for Prague
DESCRIPTION:One of the most powerful documentaries ever made\, *Oratorio for Prague* contains the only footage from the Soviet-led invasion of Prague in 1968. Czech New Wave filmmaker Jan Nemec began filming with the intention to document Prague Spring\, a celebration of the new-found liberalization of Czechoslovakia\, but the film's subject took a dramatic turn when Soviet tanks rolled through the streets.\n \nAnia Aizman is assistant professor of Slavic languages and literatures and postdoctoral scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows and the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia. She researches political art and social movements in Russia and East and Central Europe.\n \nJindrich Toman has been professor of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of Michigan since 1987. He specializes in the cultures and languages of Central Europe\, including modern Czech literature and art. As a witness of events in Czechoslovakia in 1968\, he will share with the audience his reactions to Nemec's documentary and reminisce about the events around the so-called Prague Spring.\n\nThis is an in-person event for U-M students\, faculty\, and staff only. You may participate remotely by registering at http://myumi.ch/0W354\nThose attending remotely may access the film at https://myumi.ch/NxP33\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Leo Kottke
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information and policies before purchasing a ticket and again before attending a show. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave.\n\n\n\nAcoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens\, Georgia\, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states\, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child\, flirting with both violin and trombone\, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11.\n\nAfter adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps\, Kottke joined the Navy underage\, to be underwater\, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak\, a diesel submarine.\n\nKottke had previously entered college at the U of Missouri\, dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South Carolina\, then to New London and into the Navy\, with his twelve string. \"The trip was not something I enjoyed\,\" he has said\, \"I was broke and met too many interesting people.\"\n\nDischarged in 1964\, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis' Scholar Coffeehouse\, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP Twelve String Blues\, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder\, for the Scholar's tiny Oblivion label. (The label released one other LP by The Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band.)\n\nAfter sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey\, Kottke was signed to Fahey's Takoma label\, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records.\n\nKottke's 1971 major-label debut\, \"Mudlark\,\" positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein\, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still\, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce\, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol\, as records like 1972's \"Greenhouse\" and 1973's live \"My Feet Are Smiling\" and \"Ice Water\" found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique.\n\nWith 1975's Chewing Pine\, Kottke reached the U.S. Top 30 for the second time\; he also gained an international following thanks to his continuing tours in Europe and Australia.\n\nHis collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon\, \"Clone\,\" caught audiences' attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called \"Sixty Six Steps\,\" produced by Leo's old friend and Prince producer David Z.\n\nKottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations\; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee\; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.
