DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar | Designing fair machine learning: ditch the fair and ditch the machine learning
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL SEMINAR - ZOOM MEETING LINK (see also links below)\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\n\nMeeting ID: 966 1616 9868\nPasscode: CSCS\n\nAbstract: Implementation of machine learning algorithms in decision making is\, for the most part\, (in)famously accompanied by the reproduction of social bias and discrimination\, often based on race or gender\, causing further harm to already disadvantaged populations. The dominant paradigm of \"fair machine learning\" proposes tweaking loss minimization or processing observed data to guarantee fairness. However\, this approach is limited\, as it fails to capture the ecology in which technology unfolds\, therefore masking social and institutional structures that cement such discrimination independently and in spite of algorithmic tweaking. I will provide examples of racial discrimination in judicial and financial systems and the need for contextual analysis. I will then discuss the promising avenue of causal inference through which the relationship between system structure and unethical algorithm deployment can be better understood and leveraged for policy making. In the spirit of the title\, I will also explain the panoply of failures standard causal inference exhibits\, notably its overreliance on observational data (to the expense of a generative mechanism) and its over-overreliance on variable attributes as accurate representations of an individual (to the expense of the network of social relationships such individual is embedded in and defined by)\, I will then discuss ways in which complexity science can help resolve such shortcomings. Time permitting I will try to say something good about uncritically and blindly applying machine learning to all aspects of life\, but I don't guarantee it.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | A Series of Three Lectures on: Floquet states\, Rabi oscillations\, Fermi's golden rule and all that (Lecture 3 of 3)
DESCRIPTION:Rabi oscillations arise when a few-level quantum system is subjected to a periodically time-varying field while Floquet states are stationary solutions of a quantum system in the presence of a periodic time-dependent perturbation. Past the simplest derivations\, students interested in these topics may miss to grasp the connection between Rabi oscillations and Floquet states beyond the obvious fact that they both involve a time-varying field. Equally important\, they may struggle to find pedagogical accounts in the literature discussing the effect of dissipation\, which is central to the interpretation of many physical phenomena. They may also ponder about the question as to how Rabi oscillations and Floquet states relate to results of time-dependent perturbation theory\, particularly concerning Fermi golden rule and linear response theory. In these series of lectures\, aimed at students\, we introduce an exactly solvable model of a two-level system coupled to a continuum\, which interacts with a sinusoidally time-varying classical field. Results show that the behavior of the two-level system can be mapped onto the problem of a static field\, if one shifts the energy separation between the two levels by an amount equal to the frequency of the field. This correspondence allows one to view Rabi oscillations and Floquet states from the different perspective of their time-independent-problem equivalents. The comparison between the rigorous results and those from perturbation theory helps clarify some of the difficulties underlying textbook proofs of Fermi golden rule\, and the discussions on quantum decay and linear response theory.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Digitizing the Harry A. Franck Photographs
DESCRIPTION:In 1904 Harry Alverson Franck set out for a year of travel. He had a brand new degree from the University of Michigan\, $104 in his pocket\, and a Kodak camera in his knapsack. That adventure resulted in his first book\, A Vagabond Journey Around the World\, illustrated with “more than one hundred photographs.” Over the next forty years Franck published more than thirty such illustrated travel books. His children donated his archive\, including thousands of photographs on nitrate film and glass\, to the University of Michigan Library Special Collections in 1988. Presenters will talk about the challenges of preserving those photographs and making them available through digitization.\n\nPresenters from U-M Library:\n\n* Randal Stegmeyer — Digital Photographer\, Digital Conversion Unit\n* Larry Wentzel — Digital Conversion Production Manager\, Digital Conversion Unit\n* Shannon Zachary — Head\, Department of Preservation and Conservation\n\nRegister and we'll send you a Zoom link for the event: https://umlib.us/franck\n\nView the Harry Alverson Franck Photographs: https://myumi.ch/1p3jY
