SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 12-18 months\, the world has witnessed the brutal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded by systemic racism as it proliferated across the US\, threatening to stifle its vibrant and diverse society. Students and youth in the US and globally have been at the forefront of social change devising models of inclusion and care for those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial and environmental inequities. \n Stamps Gallery invited students at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to design posters and make videos that respond to the prompt: what change would you like to see in your community? Stamps students created meaningful posters and video work that will be featured in Respond/Resist/Rethink 2021: A Student Poster &amp\; Video Exhibition. \n Why posters &amp\; video?\nFor generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. \n Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nRespond / Resist / Rethink asks the UM community to come together to envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging\, and empathy. The work featured in the exhibition were selected through an open call by a committee comprising Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Julianna Lew\, David Chung\, Najwat Rehman\, Albert Che\, and Stamps Gallery staff.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Lecture Series | Difficult Subjects: Religion and Public Schools in Contemporary Japan
DESCRIPTION:As part of a new national policy of “making persons” (hitozukuri) who could support Japan’s rapid economic growth\, in the mid-1960s Japan's Ministry of Education adopted a new objective centered on fostering students as “reliable human figures” (kitai sareru ningenzō). Despite the explicit legal prohibition regarding religious education in Japan’s constitution\, policy makers clearly expected public schools to inculcate both personal piety and professional diligence as part of this new orientation. This talk shows how public education aligned with religious indoctrination as policy wonks temporarily partnered with clerics to advance a type of non-confessional training known as “religious sentiment education” (shūkyō jōsō kyōiku).\n\n Jolyon Thomas is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of Faking Liberties: Religious Freedom in American-Occupied Japan (2019) and Drawing on Tradition: Manga\, Anime\, and Religion in Contemporary Japan (2012).\n\nPlease register for the Zoom event here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_B_L4r4l-SEOdqjRsQuG6dw\n\nThis colloquium series is made possible by the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chair's Distinguished Lecture Series: Dr. Farhan Gandhi\, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
DESCRIPTION:Farhan Gandhi\nRosalind and John J. Redfern Jr. ’33 Endowed Chair in Aerospace Engineering\nDirector\, Center for Mobility with Vertical Lift (MOVE)\nAerospace Program Director\nRensselaer Polytechnic Institute\n\nLocation: Boeing Lecture Hall\, 1109\, FXB\nSeminar both in-person and via Zoom\n\nTitle: Aeroacoustics of Mutli-Rotor eVTOL Configurations\n\nAbstract: \n\nIn recent years\, there has been a tremendous interest in the use of large multi-rotor electric VTOL (eVTOL) aircraft for Urban Air Mobility. Recognizing that the noise generated and propagated by these aircraft could be a significant impediment to their community acceptance\, the scientific and research community is directing considerable effort to eVTOL aircraft noise mitigation\, and quiet design and operation. Relative to conventional helicopters\, eVTOL aircraft experience significant rotor-rotor\, multirotor-wing and multirotor-ground interactions\, resulting in the rotors operating in complex (and “dirty”) aerodynamic environments. This seminar presents numerical simulation results on aeroacoustics of large multirotor configurations\, focusing in particular on the effect of relative rotor phasing and the effect of aerodynamic interactions. The simulations results demonstrate the potential of using relative rotor phasing to reduce noise along the inter-boom bisectors. The presentation also examines (and quantify) the noise penalty due to interactional aerodynamics -- relative to the noise generated by similar multi-rotor assemblies operating in “clean” flows.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nFarhan Gandhi obtained his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from U of Maryland’s Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center in 1995. After 17 years on the Penn State Aerospace Faculty (where he served as Deputy Director of the Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence)\, he transferred to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2012 as the Redfern Endowed Chair in Aerospace Engineering. He assumed responsibilities as RPI’s Aerospace Program Director in 2014\, and as Founding Director of RPI’s Center for Mobility with Vertical Lift (MOVE) in Spring 2018. Gandhi is an AIAA Fellow and a Technical Fellow of the Vertical Flight Society (formerly the American Helicopter Society)\, and has chaired multiple major technical conferences and technical committees. One of the nation’s top experts in VTOL aircraft aeromechanics\, advanced VTOL configurations (including multi-rotor aircraft)\, and reconfigurable vertical lift\, he held a Joint Faculty Appointment with the US Army Research Lab\, Vehicle Technology Directorate (2018-2021). Over a 26-year academic career\, Gandhi has published over a 100 journal papers\, 215 conference papers\, advised 26 PhD students to graduation\, and currently maintains a vibrant research group comprising of 2 research scientists\, 11 PhD students\, and several MS and undergrad students.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEMINAR: \"Unbiased Subdata Selection for Fair Classification: A Unified Framework and Scalable Algorithms\" – Weijun Xie
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nTitle:\nUnbiased Subdata Selection for Fair Classification: A Unified Framework and Scalable Algorithms\n\nAbstract:\nFair classification concerns the issues of unintentional biases against the sensitive features (e.g.\, gender\, race) in the conventional classification approaches. Due to the high nonconvexity of fairness measures\, existing methods are often unable to model exact fairness\, which can cause inferior fair classification outcomes. This paper fills the gap by developing a novel unified framework to jointly optimize accuracy and fairness. The proposed framework is versatile and can incorporate different fairness measures precisely as well as can be applicable to many classifiers\, including deep classification models. Many classification models within this framework can be recast as mixed-integer convex programs\, which can be solved effectively by off-the-shelf solvers when the instance sizes are moderate. We prove that in the proposed framework\, when the classification outcomes are known\, the resulting problem\, termed “unbiased subdata selection\,” is strongly polynomial-solvable and can be used to enhance the classification fairness by selecting more representative data points. This motivates us to develop an iterative refining strategy (IRS) to solve the large-scale instances\, where we improve the classification accuracy and conduct the unbiased subdata selection in an alternating fashion. We numerically demonstrate that the proposed framework can consistently yield better fair classification outcomes than existing methods. This is a joint work of my Ph.D. student Qing Ye.\n\nBio:\nDr. Weijun Xie is an Assistant Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering\, Virginia Tech. He obtained his Ph.D. from Georgia Tech. His research interests are in theory and applications of stochastic\, discrete\, and convex optimization. Dr. Xie has won multiple awards including NSF Career Award\, INFORMS Optimization Prize for Young Researchers\, INFORMS Junior Faculty Interest Group Paper Competition\, INFORMS George Nicholson Student Paper Competition. He currently serves as the Vice Chair of Optimization under Uncertainty at INFORMS Optimization Society.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME 500 Seminar: Nicholas A. Graham\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas A. Graham\, Ph.D.\nMork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science\,\nUniversity of Southern California\n\n“Systems biology approaches to drug discovery for cancer and aging”\n\nAbstract: \n\n“Omics” technologies have enabled network-level measurements of genes\, proteins\, and metabolites from cellular models of disease. Systems biology attempts to synthesize these quantitative measurements into data-driven models to explain biological function and identify targeted therapeutic drugs. Here\, I will discuss three different engineering systems biology approaches using metabolomics\, proteomics\, and bioinformatics to identify or discover drugs for cancer and aging. First\, using metabolomics\, we designed a synergistic drug combination that mimics nutrient deprivation to kill cancer cells. Second\, by integrating a proteomic signature of cellular senescence with large-scale drug screening databases\, we predicted and then validated that EGFR inhibitors are toxic to a model of cellular aging\, specifically senescent human mammary epithelial cells. Finally\, we developed a bioinformatic approach to integrate gene expression data with drug screening data from hundreds of cancer cell lines to identify clinically approved drugs whose efficacy depends on metabolic pathway activity. Taken together\, these studies demonstrate how metabolomics\, proteomics\, and bioinformatics can all serve to identify drugs for cancer and aging.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development Seminar: Colonial Institutions\, Marriage Markets\, and HIV: Evidence from Mozambique (Practice Job Talk)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This paper links Africa’s history to its HIV epidemic through colonial institutions’ lasting effects on marriage markets. I exploit the arbitrary border within Mozambique between two regimes common across the continent: one that pushed over 50\,000 young men annually into temporary labor migration (1897-1965) and another that conscripted them into forced labor (1891-1942). Historians contend the migrant-sending institution fundamentally altered marriage markets in that region. Using colonial census data\, I show that young men there married earlier and were closer in age to their wives\, even after the forced labor institution ended and migration rates had converged. Because smaller age disparities reduce HIV risk\, I examine seroprevalence today and find it is nearly 50 percent (10 p.p.) lower in the former migrant-sending region. The data suggest that persistently smaller age disparities and reductions in behaviors associated with them are the main channel for this effect.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MEGC Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract (by Mohsen Taheri)\n\nComplex applications in modern technology urgently call for advanced structural materials that are high-strength and lightweight\, and yet tolerant to damage from extreme temperature\, particle radiation\, or environmental exposure. To swiftly fulfill these emerging demanding material requirements\, we must develop a multi-scale understanding of the relationship between processing\, microstructure\, and properties of metallic materials. Toward these goals\, I present two examples of my recent findings on (i) how functional behavior of shape memory alloys made by additive manufacturing correlates with the manufacturing history and (ii) how the macroscopic strength of magnesium alloys is governed by local microstructure (grain boundary parameters). I will conclude my talk by discussing how such understandings can be captured in multi-scale modeling tools to predict the deformation of the material and accelerate the development of next-generation structural materials.\n\nPlease RSVP here for in-person attendance: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSePqF9NBGxMdXUXSEag04Vijra_FTXrjaA6P4t4dpXuUd1_eA/viewform?usp=sf_link

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2021 Tanner Lecture: Work: What Is It? Do Most of Us Need It\, and Why?
DESCRIPTION:View the Lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEJcynUx4R4\n\nThere are\, I shall argue\, three important areas of philosophical exploration about work.\n\nThe first is a question in social ontology: What is work? This question is both historical and conceptual\, as questions in social ontology usually are. And the contemporary idea of work and of a job—and the related idea of a good job--are the results of conceptual and institutional developments over the last few centuries.\n\nThe second is an ethical issue\, in Aristotle’s broad sense of ethics as concerned with eudaimonia: How does work fit into the good life? This problem is especially challenging because the idea of a good job involves many dimensions of assessment: Does it produce something useful? Does it make a positive contribution? Does it give the worker a decent income? Was that income fairly decided? Are the conditions of work satisfactory? Are they just? Does the job have the rewards of sociability? Is the work a source of significance for the worker? \n\nLooked at more generally\, the good job does four things: (a) it provides goods and services worth having\, while also (b) providing people with income\, (c) sociability\, and (d) significance. And one of the things that makes the ethical questions especially challenging at the moment\, is that new technologies are reconfiguring employment in ways that appear to threaten the creation of jobs that do all four of these things well and do them through one job. \n\nHuman flourishing requires all of these things: products\, services\, incomes\, sociability\, significance. For many people over the twentieth-century providing a good job played a huge role in delivering all of them. But AI and robotics may produce a world in which products and services could increasingly be produced without providing employment for most people: and that means either that we must find a way of providing everyone with the resources for a dignified human life without sharing the social product through the labor market\, or we must invent income-generating activities that we don’t need for the products or services they provide. We might want to do the latter because many of us would not know how to fill our lives with significance or find social groups outside the family with which to engage unless we were involved in some organized productive activity.\n\nThese are issues on which many popular writers on the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” and on globalization have\, of course\, written for some time. But we need more serious organized reflection on the normative issues raised by these challenges. \n\nAnd that leads to the third cluster of concerns: How should law and other sources of normative authority be configured to allow work to contribute to the flourishing of workers\, and how should the opportunities and rewards of work be shared? Like Aristotle\, I think we need to get the ethics right to do the politics\, but I also think that\, precisely because we are\, as he insisted social animals\, it is hard to pry them apart.\n\nIn this lecture I shall focus on the central set of ethical questions but say some things in passing about the social ontology of work at the start and the politics of employment at the end.\n\nKwame Anthony Appiah is Professor of Philosophy and Law at NYU. Earlier\, he taught at the University of Ghana\, Cambridge\, Yale\, Cornell\, Duke\, Harvard and Princeton. He grew up in Ghana and received undergraduate and doctoral degrees in philosophy from Cambridge University in England. His work has been in the philosophy of mind and language\, ethics\, political philosophy\, and the philosophy of art\, of culture\, and of the social sciences\, especially anthropology\; as well as in literary studies\, where he has focused on African and African-American literature. He served as President of the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association (2007). In 2012\, President Obama presented him with the National Humanities Medal. His publications include Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers and The Lies That Bind: Rethinking Identity. Professor Appiah writes the weekly Ethicist column for the New York Times Sunday magazine.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Venue is wheelchair accessible.
