DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): The Green Books and the Geography of Segregation in Public Accommodations
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nJim Crow segregated African Americans and whites by law and practice. The causes and implications of the associated de jure and de facto residential segregation have received substantial attention from scholars\, but there has been little empirical research on racial discrimination in public accommodations during this time period. We digitize the Negro Motorist Green Books\, important historical travel guides aimed at helping African Americans navigate segregation in the pre-Civil Rights Act United States. We create a novel panel dataset that contains precise geocoded locations of over 4\,000 unique businesses that provided non-discriminatory service to African American patrons between 1938 and 1966. Our analysis reveals several new facts about discrimination in public accommodations that contribute to the broader literature on racial segregation. First\, the largest number of Green Book establishments were found in the Northeast\, while the lowest number were found in the West. The Midwest had the highest number of Green Book establishments per black resident and the South had the lowest. Second\, we combine our Green Book estimates with newly digitized county-level estimates of hotels to generate the share of non-discriminatory formal accommodations. Again\, the Northeast had the highest share of non-discriminatory accommodations\, with the South following closely behind. Third\, for Green Book establishments located in cities for which the Home Owner’s Loan Corporation (HOLC) drew residential security maps\, the vast majority (nearly 70 percent) are located in the lowest-grade\, redlined neighborhoods. Finally\, Green Book presence tends to correlate positively with measures of material well-being and economic activity.\n\n(To attend this online event\, please complete the form to receive email instructions and announcements for this and future SBEE Seminars.)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Quest for KL —> pi0 nu nu-bar
DESCRIPTION:The KL —> pi0 nu nu-bar decay is one of the sensitive probes to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Because the branching ratio predicted by the Standard Model (3 x 10^{-11}) and its theoretical uncertainty are small\, a small deviation from the prediction would signify an existence of new physics. Although the decay mode is theoretically clean\, it is difficult to observe experimentally. Not only because the observable particles are limited to two photons from the pi0\, backgrounds should be controlled and understood to the level of O(10^-{11}). In this talk\, I will briefly review several experimental ideas in the past\, explain how the current J-PARC KOTO experiment started and progressed\, and show some future plans.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Machine Learning and Causality: Building Efficient\, Reliable Models for Decision-Making
DESCRIPTION:Increasingly practitioners are looking to ML-based causal and predictive models to provide personalized decision guidance. However\, current techniques for causal inference typically rely on having access to large amounts of data\, limiting their applicability to data-constrained settings such as healthcare where collection of data might be prohibitively costly. In addition\, empirical evidence has shown that most predictive models are insufficiently robust with respect to shifts at test time. This talk presents novel techniques addressing both of these problems.\n\nMuch of the causal literature focuses on learning accurate individual treatment effects\, which can be complex and hard to estimate from small samples. However\, it is often sufficient for clinicians to have estimates of upper and lower bounds on the potential outcomes of decision alternatives to assess risks and benefits. I will show that in such cases we can improve sample efficiency by estimating simple functions that bound these outcomes instead of estimating their conditional expectations. I will present a novel algorithm that leverages these theoretical insights.\n\nI will also present approaches to deal with distribution shifts. I will discuss how distribution shift arises when training models to predict contagious infections in the presence of asymptomatic carriers. I will present a causally-motivated regularization scheme that enables prediction of the true infection state with high accuracy even if the training data is collected under biased test administration.\n\nMaggie Makar is the Presidential postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan\, and a visiting research at Microsoft Research. Dr. Makar recieved her PhD in Computer Science at MIT. While at MIT\, Maggie interned at Microsoft Research\, and Google Brain. Prior to MIT\, Maggie worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, studying end-of-life care. Her work has appeared in ICML\, AAAI\, JSM\, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)\, Health Affairs\, and Epidemiology among others. Maggie received a B.Sc. in Math and Economics from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst.\n\n This seminar series is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach. For the Zoom link and password and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\, please RSVP. For additional questions\, contact CHEPSseminar@umich.edu.
