SUMMARY:Exhibition:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966
DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Panel\, Material Responsibility: Mollie Claypool\, Dana Cupkova\, and Achim Menges
DESCRIPTION:Material Responsibility discusses issues of contemporary material fabrication in context to social\, environmental\, and construction related challenges. Researchers\, designers\, and builders assume the mantle of responsibility to address inherited legacies in everyday practices. This event tries to unravel not only assumptions about what and how we build\, but also looks to question why\, to situate our motivations and impact. In moving away from practices that simply justifies the present moment\, the discussion on Material Responsibility aims to identify where our responsibilities lie in the complex global systems and networks that make up our contemporary practice. \n\nPresentations from Mollie Claypool (The Bartlett School of Architecture\, UCL)\, Dana Cupkova (Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture)\, and Achim Menges (University of Stuttgart Institute for Computational Design and Construction)\, will be followed by a panel discussion with Taubman College faculty.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: How Squirrels Sleep: Neuroethology and the Development of Countermeasures for Astronauts
DESCRIPTION:There is a strong need for more relevant animal models that behave like humans to better understand how physiology is altered in analog environments (e.g.\, long-duration space flight). The free-living squirrel is one such candidate\, as they are diurnal\, non-hibernating mammals that engage in complex social and physical behaviors in a three-dimensional arboreal landscape. My interest focuses on the potential neuromodulatory countermeasures that could be realized during sleep\, specifically\, the closed-loop enhancement of slow-wave activity (or “deep sleep”). I will first show how squirrels sleep through a 6-year retrospective study on accelerometer data from the Canadian Yukon. Next\, I will introduce a wireless\, implantable bio-logger toolset I developed at Michigan to record neural activity and then present preliminary\, first-of-their-kind data from freely behaving squirrels. Finally\, I will describe my audio-based countermeasure deployment and my aims to measure its effect.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Underrepresented Outperformers: Female Legislators in the Chinese Congress: A presentation of collaborative research by Yue Hou\, Xinrui Feng and Mingxing Liu
DESCRIPTION:Please register for this Zoom webinar here: https://myumi.ch/0WKd9\n\nDr. Hou\, and her research collaborators\, present one of the first studies of the political behavior of female members of China's national legislature - the National People's Congress (NPC). Female legislators have consistently held about 20% of seats in the NPC in the past two decades because of a gender quota\, but they sponsor about 44% of all legislative bills and more than half of bills relevant to women's rights and interests in the 12th NPC. Among sponsors\, women on average sponsor more bills (4.8 bills) than men (3.1 bills). They propose three potential mechanisms that drive women's comparative productiveness: (i) women are more collaborative than their male colleagues\; (ii) the gender quota and non-Communist Party quota produce a particularly active female group\; and (iii) female leadership encourages female participation. They next analyze 2\,365 bills submitted during the 12th NPC and show that female legislators are not only more engaged in women's issues\; they are also disproportionately more active than men in the traditionally \"male dominated'' areas including economics and finance\, foreign affairs\, rural affairs and environmental issues. Their findings suggest that a socialist legacy alone does not narrow the political gender gap\; underrepresented regime outsiders (women) have strategically used the \"double-quota'' system and collaborated to carve out a place to amplify their voices\, outperform insiders\, and shape the policy debate.\n \n Yue Hou is the Janice and Julian Bers Assistant Professor in the Social Sciences in the Political Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also affiliated with Penn’s Center for the Study of Contemporary China. Her research interests include political economy and authoritarian politics\, with a regional focus on China. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Politics\, Journal of Experimental Political Science\, Quarterly Journal of Political Science\, Journal of Comparative Economics\, Social Science Quarterly and China Leadership Monitor\, and has been featured in the New York Times\, Boston Review and South China Morning Post. Her first book\, “The Private Sector in Public Office: Selective Property Rights in China” (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics\, Cambridge University Press\, 2019)\, addresses the long-standing puzzle of how China’s private sector manages to grow without secure property rights. She also writes articles for Chinese media outlets including the Southern Weekly and Tencent ipress. She received her PhD in Political Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and BA in Economics and Mathematics from Grinnell College.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | How to Create and Leverage Many-Body Entanglement \nFor Near-Term Quantum Networks and Simulation
DESCRIPTION:Quantum information science and related technologies include quantum computers\, which will be able to solve important problems beyond the reach of classical computers\, as well as the ‘quantum internet’\, an inherently secure network for communication and for accessing remote quantum computers. I will discuss these technologies\, focusing on the question of how to enable them by creating and leveraging multipartite entangled states using near-term quantum systems. In the case of quantum networks\, I will describe our protocols for the generation of logically encoded photonic graph states from quantum emitters. For quantum simulation\, I will present our recent work on efficient variational quantum algorithms. \n\nBio: Sophia Economou is a Professor of Physics and the Hassinger Senior Fellow of Physics at Virginia Tech. She focuses on theoretical research in quantum information science\, including quantum computing with solid-state and photonic qubits\, quantum communications\, and quantum simulation algorithms.\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Professor Ken Kollman\, The Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professorship in Political Science\, Inaugural Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in person lecture to celebrate Professor Ken Kollman at Weiser Hall on Tuesday\, September 21st at 4:00 p.m.\n\nMany people have intense worries about the future of American democracy. They should worry less about the long term survivability of democracy\, and just like parties and politicians\, focus more on winning the next round of elections. The partisanship that appears to be hardening in our society is actually a source of stability and predictability\, and it gives people a stake in election outcomes. The major parties\, contrary to popular belief\, remain moderating forces. Granted\, norms and electoral institutions are under threat but they are more robust than many people think\, and if people focus on winning elections and adopting policies\, and worry less about what damage others might do\, American democracy will survive just fine.\n\nIf you are unable to join us in person\, please click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95974609506\nOr One tap mobile : \n US: +13017158592\,\,95974609506# or +13126266799\,\,95974609506# \nOr Telephone:\n Dial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\n US: +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 646 876 9923 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 669 900 6833 \n Canada: +1 204 272 7920 or +1 438 809 7799 or +1 587 328 1099 or +1 647 374 4685 or +1 647 558 0588 or +1 778 907 2071 \nWebinar ID: 959 7460 9506\n International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/abS4aXbQ1o\n\nOr an H.323/SIP room system:\n H.323: \n 162.255.37.11 (US West)\n 162.255.36.11 (US East)\n 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n 213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n 149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n 64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n 149.137.68.253 (Mexico)\n 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\n Meeting ID: 959 7460 9506\n SIP: 95974609506@zoomcrc.com

SUMMARY:Performance:Joe Troop (from Che Apalache)
DESCRIPTION:*By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nJoe Troop is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Winston-Salem\, North Carolina. During his decade in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, he formed the group Che Apalache with three of his students. The band’s second album\, Rearrange My Heart\, was produced by legendary genre-bender\, banjoist Béla Fleck and received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Folk Album in 2020. Unfortunately\, the pandemic has made international touring all but impossible\, forcing Che Apalache into hiatus.\n\nWorking in a style dubbed “latingrass\,” Joe melds music from the Appalachian foothills with traditional soundscapes from across Latin American. He composes wry and well-traveled acoustic music\, sung in English and Spanish. Wrenching old-time music into the world of contemporary global politics\, Joe creates spaces for sympathy\, solidarity\, and a little humor. His new solo album featuring Charlie Hunter\, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn\, Tim O’Brien and many more superb musicians will be released in late summer.
