SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Loss of Control in Addiction: The Search for an Adequate Theory and the Case for Intellectual Humility
DESCRIPTION:Some theorists say that addiction involves loss of control over using drugs while others say control is preserved. In this chapter\, I disagree with both sides\, not so much in substance\, but rather in epistemic tenor. Both sides\, I argue\, run well ahead of what the evidence allows. I frame the discussion in terms of a key division in human motivational architecture: We not only have desires\, we also have powerful capacities to exercise top-down regulation over these desires. I review a number of influential theories of addiction\, both ones that favor loss of control and ones that deny it\, and I find that they all have a massive gap: They lack an adequate explanation for when and how top-down regulation over inappropriate desires succeeds and fails. Without this critical piece\, we simply cannot have much confidence in these views.

DESCRIPTION:60th Anniversary Alumni Lecture Series\n\nPlease register here for this Zoom webinar: https://myumi.ch/PleQR\n \n Since the early 20th century attitudes toward modernization have increasingly centered on spatial hierarchies manifested not only in the built environment\, but also through China's arts and culture such as through the growing nationalist interest in its ancient sculptural sites. Through tracing the new emphasis on the monumental in various interpretations of sculpture of the past as well as the present up to the 1950s\, this talk examines the motivations for invoking monumentality in modern China and its role in envisioning a new mass viewer in the young Communist nation.\n \n Vivian Li is the Lupe Murchison Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art and a specialist in postwar and contemporary art in Asia. She has realized several ambitious exhibitions and commissions\, including collaborations with Mel Chin\, Lee Mingwei\, and Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries. With the support of a Fulbright fellowship she completed her dissertation on postwar sculpture in China and received her PhD from the University of Michigan in Art History in 2015. She has contributed to various publications\, including the Oxford Art Journal\,\" Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art\,\" and the forthcoming anthology \"Postwar—A Global Art History\, 1945–1965\" edited by Okwui Enwezor and Atreyee Gupta.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Institutions\, Property Rights\, and Growth: Theory and Evidence from the End of East European Serfdom
DESCRIPTION:The predominant analysis of representative institutions in the development literature casts them as the guardians of property against governmental predation. By enforcing property rights\, the story goes\, representative assemblies stimulate investment\, specialization\, innovation\, and other forms of socially beneficial economic activity. What this analysis overlooks is that property relations themselves sometimes come in conflict with the demands of development. The political prerequisites of growth\, then\, include the existence of some agency that is authorized\, when necessary\, not to uphold but instead to transform the established property rights regime. Using the agrarian reforms in later eighteenth century Eastern Europe as a case study\, McElroy shows that only certain kinds of representative institutions can perform this function effectively. Success depends on a representative body's configuration of internal decision-making institutions\, particularly the acceptance of simple majority voting. He tests these propositions by reconstructing the process of agrarian reform in the Russian Baltic province of Livonia between 1795 and 1804\, using documents from Latvian\, Russian\, and Estonian archives. His findings underscore the importance of specific procedural rules\, especially majority voting\, in generating the \"good\" economic outcomes commonly attributed to early representative institutions as such.\n \nBrendan McElroy earned his PhD in government from Harvard in 2020\, after receiving his BA in government and Russian studies (2011) and his MA in Russian and East European studies (2013) from Georgetown University. His work examines the complementary processes of state formation and elite transformation in early modern Eastern Europe\, with particular emphasis on the genesis of representative institutions\, their evolution\, and their consequences for state building and economic growth. He is currently preparing a book manuscript under the provisional title \"Peasants and Parliaments: Agrarian Reform in Later Eighteenth Century Europe\,\" and will join the University of Toronto Department of Political Science as assistant professor in July\, 2022.\n\nThis lecture is part of the WCED series on \"Capitalism and Democracy.\" 2022 will mark the 30th anniversary of the publication of *Capitalist Development and Democracy* (by Dietrich Rueschmeyer et. al. in 1992) and the 80th anniversary of the publication of *Capitalism\, Socialism\, and Democracy* (by Joseph Schumpeter in 1942). It is thus a perfect occasion to think anew about how capitalism and democracy interact. At WCED we will be hosting a series of events with “Capitalism and Democracy” as our annual theme. \n\nThis hybrid event will be presented in person at 1010 Weiser Hall and via Zoom. Register for the live-stream at https://myumi.ch/88l0K\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Epistolary Revolution in Chosŏn Korea
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This session will be held virtually EST through Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \n Register at: https://myumi.ch/QAgxE\n \n While discussing his book The Power of the Brush: Epistolary Practices in Chosŏn Korea (University of Washington Press\, 2020)\, Hwisang Cho will give a survey of the “epistolary revolution” that shaped Korean society from the sixteenth century to the end of the Chosŏn dynasty and beyond. By examining the physical peculiarities of new letter forms\, the cooptation of letters for other purposes after their communicative functions\, and the rise of diverse political epistolary genres\, this talk will illuminate how innovation in epistolary practices allowed diverse writers to move beyond the limits imposed by the existing scholarly culture\, gender norms\, and political systems. While emphasizing how the epistolary revolution posed new challenges to traditional values and already-established institutions\, it will demonstrate that new modes of reading and writing developed in the seemingly mundane and trivial practice of letter writing triggered a flourishing of Neo-Confucian moral thought\, the formation of new kinds of cultural power\, and the rise of elite public politics.\n \n Hwisang Cho is an assistant professor in Korean studies at Emory University. Cho’s areas of specialization include the cultural\, intellectual\, and literary history of Korea\, comparative textual media\, and global written culture. His major work in progress is The Tales of the Master: T’oegye and the Making of Modern Korea\, a study of how the culture of storytelling about a historical personage and its manifestation in diverse material forms have influenced the formation and appropriation of self-identities of various communities in Korea from the late sixteenth century to the present.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
