SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:“Flourish”: Boot Camp for Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:“Flourish” by Martin E.P. Seligman - A must read for those wanting to understand how we thrive.\n\n\"The book is full of nuggets about why positive approaches work.\"\n\"An interesting and hope-inducing read with real-world application.\"\n\nSeligman's approach is to take psychology from its traditional role in alleviating misery and broaden it into a solid research-based guidebook to wellbeing -- teaching us how to be wiser\, stronger\, more generous to others\, more self-disciplined\, and more capable of dealing with difficulty and rejection. Seligman asks\, what is it that enables you to cultivate your talents\, to build deep\, lasting relationships with others\, to feel pleasure\, and to contribute meaningfully to the world? In a word\, what is it that allows you to flourish? \n\nThis study group will meet on Wednesdays for six weeks beginning on September 29. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:About the talk: \nRemote or hybrid work is not new—domestic and global companies have had virtual work arrangements for nearly 30 years. However\, the rapid and unprecedented changes brought on by COVID-19 have accelerated these transitions\, requiring the wholesale migration of nearly entire companies to remote work in a matter of weeks\, leaving managers and employees scrambling to adjust. \n\nOn one hand\, companies have seen opportunities that remote work can afford them: nonexistent commute times\, lower operational costs\, and a larger pool of global job applicants. Many are planning to permanently incorporate remote days into their long-term routines or even give their employees the option to work from home full-time. On the other hand\, these circumstances have brought to light many challenges that are inherent with virtual arrangements: employees feel lost\, isolated\, and out of sync and out of sight. \n\nPeople are looking for insights\; they want to know how to keep their teams motivated\, what digital tools they’ll need\, how to keep track of employee productivity\, how to maintain connections without face-to-face interactions\, and how to combat the draining feelings of tech exhaustion. Based on nearly two decades of experience working with virtual and global teams\, Neeley provides evidence-based answers to the most pressing questions about how teams can feel more connected and be well-prepared to deliver optimal results. \n\nAbout Neeley: \nTsedal Neeley is the Naylor Fitzhugh Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. Her work focuses on how leaders can scale their organizations by developing and implementing global and digital strategies. She regularly advises top leaders who are embarking on virtual work and large scale-change that involves global expansion\, digital transformation\, and becoming more agile. \n\nHost: \nJane Dutton\, Center for Positive Organizations Co-Founder\; Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Professor Emerita of Business Administration and Psychology \n\nSeries Sponsors: \nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies\, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2021-22 Positive Links Speaker Series. \n\nSeries Promotional Partners: \nAdditionally\, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.\n\nFree\, registration required to obtain login information: https://myumi.ch/dOmD5

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 12-18 months\, the world has witnessed the brutal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded by systemic racism as it proliferated across the US\, threatening to stifle its vibrant and diverse society. Students and youth in the US and globally have been at the forefront of social change devising models of inclusion and care for those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial and environmental inequities. \n Stamps Gallery invited students at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to design posters and make videos that respond to the prompt: what change would you like to see in your community? Stamps students created meaningful posters and video work that will be featured in Respond/Resist/Rethink 2021: A Student Poster &amp\; Video Exhibition. \n Why posters &amp\; video?\nFor generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. \n Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nRespond / Resist / Rethink asks the UM community to come together to envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging\, and empathy. The work featured in the exhibition were selected through an open call by a committee comprising Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Julianna Lew\, David Chung\, Najwat Rehman\, Albert Che\, and Stamps Gallery staff.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Assessing Measurement Error in Hypothetical Questions – Jennifer Sinibaldi and Adam Kaderabek - JPSM MPSDS Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Sinibaldi\, Research Director\, National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the National Science Foundation (NSF)\n\nAdam Kaderabek\, Research Assistant and Masters Student\, Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science\n\nAssessing Measurement Error in Hypothetical Questions\nAlthough most opinion survey questions use factual\, behavioral\, and attitudinal questions that ask what the respondent is\, has done\, or currently feels\, sometimes surveys use hypothetical questions that ask the respondent to imagine a particular situation and state what they would do or feel. We expect these questions to suffer from measurement error but without an objectively observable truth for reference\, we cannot evaluate it. Psychologists and economists who have studied the error in respondents’ “stated” preferences have labeled this error hypothetical bias. Survey methodologists have conducted very little research in the area of hypothetical bias but understanding this error could be important for correcting stated preferences on topics like: mode preference\, consent to record linkage\, and whether the respondent would download an app with certain features. \n\nWe use data from an experiment that asked participants assigned to the treatment group to report their reaction to the experimental survey protocol they received. Meanwhile\, those in the control group were asked hypothetically how they would react to the protocol if they had experienced it. We compare the responses to ten respondent reaction questions presented upon completion of the survey\, identifying the presence of hypothetical bias across all 10 questions using both categorical and quantitative methods. We found that the Control group consistently exhibited less preference for the hypothetical protocol than the Treatment group. We believe these differences are representative of the measurement error resulting from the poor correspondence between the Control group’s hypothetical attitudes and the Treatment group’s reported experience. This work shows that hypothetical bias is a problem in opinion research and is the first to quantify the extent of that problem.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. The Insecurity State: Views from Belarus
DESCRIPTION:2017 marked the 23rd year of power of Aleksandr Lukashenko over Belarus. In those years\, his opponents have been silenced\, murdered\, exiled\, or imprisoned. Every few years he has staged elections that the international community has characterized as “unfree and unfair\,” followed by police suppression of protester\, quick trials\, and lengthy prison sentences. Among the only voices reminding the world about the plight of those living under Europe's “Last Dictator” is the Belarus Free Theater\, a critically acclaimed troupe consisting of actors still living in the country and their exiled founders. Award-winning photographer Misha Friedman started following the theater as they traveled the world on sold-out tours and performed underground plays at home. In 2020 Friedman returned to Minsk to photograph what everyone expected to be yet another déjà vu election cycle. That August everything turned out differently. Join us for a special viewing and discussion of Friedman’s work in Belarus from August 2020.\n\nMisha Friedman was born in Moldova\, and graduated with degrees from Binghamton University (1997) and London School of Economics (2000)\, where he studied economics and Russian politics. He worked in finance in New York\, and after 9/11 switched careers to volunteer as a project manager at Medecins Sans Frontiers while teaching himself photography. Since 2009\, photography has become his profession. He was associated with Cosmos Photo Agency 2011 - 2018\, and is now represented by Getty Images. Misha regularly collaborates with leading international media and non-profit organizations. A Pulitzer Prize finalist\, his widely-exhibited work has received numerous industry awards\, including several Pictures of the Year (POYi). He has five monographs\; his most recent book\, Two Women in Their Time\, was published by The New Press in 2020. Misha lives in New York City.\n\nThis hybrid event will be presented in person at 1010 Weiser Hall and via Zoom. SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag: How does culture shape responses to immoral behavior?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nImagine witnessing your best friend committing a crime. Would you act out of loyalty to your friend\, by protecting them from punishment\, or loyalty to your society\, by punishing their crime? Moral norms help us balance between the needs of the group and those of individuals\, and societies across the globe vary in the balance they strike. Among Americans\, the answer is clear: people reliably choose to protect close others who commit moral transgressions\, thereby prioritizing individuals at the expense of society. How might this differ in collectivist cultural contexts? Decades of cultural psychology research present two compelling possibilities. On one hand\, people in collectivist contexts may perceive outcomes to be shared among close others. Therefore\, to avoid negative consequences for the self\, they may protect close others even more strongly than Americans. On the other hand\, people in collectivist contexts may prioritize the group over any individual\, which would predict a weaker tendency to protect close others. Across three studies\, we provide self-report and narrative evidence supporting the latter hypothesis. In Studies 1 and 2\, we show that Japanese (vs. Americans) are more punitive toward close others who commit crimes\, and that this is driven by societal (vs. individual) concerns. In Study 3\, we show that this cultural difference disappears when society is less implicated in the crime. Together\, this work underscores the importance of context in shaping interpersonal moral decisions.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IISS Lecture Series. Sacred Relics\, Insignia\, and Kingship: the Ottoman Case in Comparative Perspective
DESCRIPTION:IISS is pleased to announce the public lecture \"Sacred Relics\, Insignia\, and Kingship: the Ottoman Case in Comparative Perspective\" by Professor Gottfried Hagen (Department of Middle East Studies\, University of Michigan)\n\nSultan Murād III rode into the Battle of Mezőkeresztes in 1596 behind the the Holy Banner of the Prophet Muḥammad\, and had the Prophet’s Mantle carried alongside. Did the possession of these and other vestiges make the Ottoman sultan a sacred king\, placing him “in a mimetic relationship to the Divine” (A. Al-Azmeh)? In this lecture\, we will look at the ways relic and vestiges have been used and displayed in liturgical and political contexts\, as icons and insignia\, in Islamic and Christian monarchies\, to come to a better understanding of the sacred dimension of Ottoman kingship\".

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Flat Bands\, Topology\, and Fractionalization - A New Pathway Towards Fractional Topological States
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will first provide a review about various flat band systems and the nontrivial physics that emerges from these flat bands and heavy electrons\, with main focus on fractional topological states and fractional excitations. In contrast to the conventional approach\, such as the fractional quantum Hall effect\, which requires a strong external magnetic field\, here we explore a new pathway towards the same type of exotic fractional particles through spontaneous symmetry breaking with zero external magnetic fields. We show that utilizing realistic material parameters and the method of exact diagonalization\, these fractional states can be stabilized in Moiré superlattices of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). \n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nHuman complex traits result from genetic and environmental factors\, and from their interactions. Many of these effects are mediated by changes in gene regulation. Indeed\, most genetic variants associated with complex trait variation in humans are in regulatory regions. I will present some of our recent studies on gene-environment interactions in gene regulation\, with a specific focus on cardiovascular health. I will present evidence that gene-environment interactions in molecular phenotypes are frequent\, account for a substantial portion of complex trait variation and modify genetic risk for disease.\n\nResearch Focus:\n\nMy lab is interested in understanding the genetic and molecular basis of inter-individual and inter-population differences in complex phenotypes. We combine evolutionary and functional genomics approaches to study intermediate phenotypes (e.g.: transcription factor binding\, gene expression\, protein secretion\, etc.) and how they are affected by gene-environment interactions. Our research is funded by the NIH.\n\nZoom link: https://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Gerald F. Else Lecture in the Humanities
DESCRIPTION:Luigi Settembrini (1813-1876) was a classicist and revolutionary condemned to death in 1849 for his role in the 1848 revolution in Naples. His wife managed to have his sentence commuted to life imprisonment in the infamous Panopticon on the island of Santo Stefano\, where inmates often killed each other and torture was common. There he managed to translate the complete works of Lucian\, testing his language by reading out his work to his illiterate cellmates\, who often knew no standard Italian – and reflecting on Lucian’s own attempts at creating a common language\, humor\, and popular philosophy. He wrote on women’s rights\, celebrated gay love (in a fake ancient fiction he ironically entitled The Neoplatonists\, while in fact rejecting Catholic\, Neoplatonic humiliations of the body)\, and worked relentlessly towards an egalitarian and ethnically diverse future for the Italian nation. Together with Garibaldi he planned a daring evasion from the Panopticon\, which failed at the last minute\; later he was forcibly sent into exile to the United States but\, during the voyage there\, two black sailors helped him and other Italian political prisoners to mutiny and disembark in Ireland. He returned to Italy in 1860\, in the wake of unification. Back in Naples he oversaw the publication of the Herculaneum papyri\; became Rector of the University\; and was later elected Senator. He never completed his autobiography and\, refusing to present himself as a hero\, was soon forgotten.\n\nThis lecture revisits the legacies of Luigi Settembrini and puts them in dialogue with current debates about classics\, attempting to move beyond a hermeneutics of suspicion and towards an expansive classical tradition that sustains the regenerative possibilities of literature\, love\, and revolution.\n\nLivestream available at: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa092921.html

This webinar will address the process that the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) is using to draw district maps for the U.S. Congress and both houses of the Michigan Legislature.\n \n \nThe webinar will include an analysis of the testimony the Commission has received from citizens and Communities of Interest about their mapping preferences\, a discussion of the timeline for creating final maps\, and useful tips for the public and Communities of Interest as they prepare to offer comments to the Commission about the new district maps this fall. The Commission currently plans to begin the second and final round of public hearings in early October.\n \nSergio Martínez-Beltrán of Bridge Michigan will moderate a panel that includes Moon Duchin of Tufts University’s MGGG Redistricting Lab\, who designed the Commission’s public input portal\, Bob Chunn of Next Vote which helps communities draw maps\, and Hayg Oshagan who directs New Michigan Media\, a network of ethnic and minority media. The Executive Director of the MICRC\, Sue Hammersmith\, will also speak about public input and the mapping process.\n \nThis is the third webinar in a series sponsored by the Center for Local\, State and Urban Policy (CLOSUP) at the University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy and Voters Not Politicians (VNP)\, along with Michigan State University’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR).
